Catalytic dehydration of glycerol to acrolein over unsupported MoP

Shan Liu,Zhiquan Yu,Yao Wang,Zhichao Sun,Yingya Liu,Chuan Shi,Anjie Wang

Catalytic dehydration of glycerol over solid catalysts provides a sustainable and economic route to producing acrolein. Unsupported MoP catalyst was prepared by temperature-programmed-reduction method and used for the gas-phase glycerol dehydration. The catalyst was characterized by means of XRD, SEM, TEM, NH 3 -TPD, Py-IR, XPS, TG-DSC, and N 2 adsorption-desorption. It is indicated that the acidic P OH and M oOH groups, which are usually associated with the weak or moderate strength of Brønsted acid sites, were presented on the surface of MoP. The effects of reaction temperature and carrier gas flow rate on glycerol conversion and acrolein selectivity were investigated over MoP. The selectivity to acrolein was up to 89.0 % and kept constant in a 50-h run at 240 °C. The gradual decrease of glycerol conversion might be related to the insoluble carbonaceous materials deposited on the catalyst surface.

Boosting potassium-ion storage in large-diameter carbon nanotubes/MoP hybrid

Zhide Wang,Weikang Gao,Chenjie Ding,Haoyu Qi,Shifei Kang,Lifeng Cui

Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) as a substitute for lithium ion batteries have attracted tremendous attention in recent years thanks to the cost-effectiveness and abundance of potassium resources. However, the current lack of suitable electrode materials is a major obstacle against the practical application of KIBs. Hence, design and preparation of capable anode materials are critical for the development of KIBs. In this study, a promising electrode based on N, P-codoped large diameter hollow carbon nanotubes decorated with ultrasmall MoP nanoparticles (MoP@NP-HCNTs) were prepared. The hollow carbon nanotubes facilitate the rapid electron and ion transfer, and release the huge volume expansion during discharge/charge. The MoP@NP-HCNT electrode delivers high initial capacity of 485, 482 and 463 mAh g −1 corresponding to 100, 200 and 1000 mA g −1 , respectively. The discharge specific capacity still maintains 300 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 after over 80 cycles. It still shows ultralong cycling stability with a discharge capacity of 255 mAh g −1 at a high current density of 1000 mA g −1 after 120 cycles. This study opens up a new routine to develop high reversible capacity and promising electrode materials for KIBs.

Nanoscale engineering MoP/Fe2P/RGO toward efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction

Kewei Wang,Jinshan Tan,Zejia Lu,Shuai Chen,Xilin She,Huawei Zhang,Dongjiang Yang

The preparation of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalyst with high catalytic performance is a huge challenge. In this work, we develop a MoP/Fe 2 P/RGO composite as a electrocatalyst for HER. The MoP/Fe 2 P/RGO exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance with a Tafel slope and an onset overpotential of 51 mV/dec and 105 mV, respectively. To drive 10 mA/cm 2 , it only requires a small over-potential of 156 mV. The high electrocatalytic HER activity is mainly due to the synergistic effect of MoP and Fe 2 P. In addition, the introduction of RGO not only prevents particle aggregation and coalescence during high temperature phosphating, but also improves the conductivity of the catalyst.

Few Layered N, P Dual-Doped Carbon-Encapsulated Ultrafine MoP Nanocrystal/MoP Cluster Hybrids on Carbon Cloth: An Ultrahigh Active and Durable 3D Self-Supported Integrated Electrode for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in a Wide pH Range

Baocang Liu,Huan Li,Bo Cao,Jianing Jiang,Rui Gao,Jun Zhang

Development of highly active and stable electrocatalysts is a key to realize efficient hydrogen evolution through water electrolysis. Here, the development of a 3D self-supported integrated electrode constituting few layered N, P dual-doped carbon-encapsulated ultrafine MoP nanocrystal/MoP cluster hybrids on carbon cloth (FLNPC@MoP-NC/MoP-C/CC) is demonstrated. Benefiting from novel structural features including fully open and accessible nanoporosity, ultrasmall size of MoP-NCs on MoP-Cs as well as strong synergistic effects of N, P dual-doped carbon layers with MoP-NCs, the FLNPC@MoP-NC/MoP-C/CC as a 3D self-supported binder-free integrated electrode exhibits extraordinary catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with extremely low overpotentials at all pH values ( j = 10 mA cm −2 at η = 74, 106, and 69 mV in 0.5 m H 2 SO 4 , 1.0 m PBS, and 1.0 m KOH electrolytes, respectively). To the best of our knowledge, the ultrahigh electrocatalytic performance represents one of the best MoP-based HER electrocatalysts reported so far. Additionally, few layered N, P dual-doped carbon can effectively prevent MoP-NC/MoP-C from corrosion, making the FLNPC@MoP-NC/MoP-C/CC exhibit nearly unfading stability after 50 h testing in acidic, neutral, and alkaline media, which shows great promise for electrocatalytic water splitting application.

Carbon, Oxygen Co-doped MoP as a High-Efficiency Catalyst Towards Hydrodechlorination Reaction

Xinyu Wang,Lu Zhang,Guojun Yuan,Jianliang Bai,Yaqing Zhu,Lili Ren

Graphical The mechanism diagram demonstrates that the hydrodechlorination (HDC) reaction of carbon, oxygen co-doped MoP catalyst for trichloroethylene (TCE) shown as the above. Trichloroethylene (TCE) plays an important role in industrial production. However, humans are now suffering the effects of trichloroethylene being released directly into the environment. Therefore, it is urgent to explore effective methods for the degradation of trichloroethylene. Hydrodechlorination (HDC) reaction is considered a green, beneficial and promising technology due to its high selectivity, environmental tenderness and product recovery. Noble metal catalysts are considered as the benchmark catalysts for catalytic processes, but their wide application is limited by their low abundance and low stability. Phosphide has been paid more and more attention in HDC field because of its excellent catalytic performance. In view of the important role of O in the catalytic process, the preparation of C, O co-doped MoP was realized through the co-modification of EDTA and glucose. In the case of changing the molar ratio of MoP to the surface modifier, MOP−C−O (50 %) can achieve the best catalytic efficiency. Even compared with some reported catalysts, it has a very large catalytic advantage. In summary, the C, O co-doped MoP catalyst proposed in this paper provides guidance for the preparation of the same type of catalyst. The harms caused by organic chlorides to the human body and the environment make the problem of how to degrade organic chlorides particularly urgent. Phosphides have gradually attracted attention in HDC due to their high catalytic performance. In view of the important role of O in catalytic process, the preparation of C, O co-doped MoP was achieved by the synergistic modification of EDTA and glucose. Compared with unmodified MoP, the doping of carbon and oxygen in MoP−C−O ensure that more active sites are exposed on the surface. At the same time, the high dispersion of MoP on the carbon matrix increases the specific surface area of MoP−C−O, which is more conducive to the adsorption of reactants on the surface, thereby effectively improving the catalytic activity of the modified MoP−C−O. In the case of changing the molar ratio of MoP and surface modifier, the best activity of MoP−C−O (50 %) reaches 57.80 %, which is 2.3 times higher than that of MoP catalyst.

Fabrication of novel and noble-metal-free MoP/In2S3 Schottky heterojunction photocatalyst with efficient charge separation for enhanced photocatalytic H2 evolution under visible light

Xiaohui Ma,Wenjun Li,Hongda Li,Mei Dong,Xinyang Li,Liang Geng,Hongxia Fan,Yanyan Li,Hong Qiu,Tianyu Wang

Here, we synthesized a series of noble-metal-free MoP/In 2 S 3 Schottky heterojunction photocatalysts through two-step synthesis. Morphology characterization revealed that In 2 S 3 was deposited on metal-like MoP. The electrochemical experiment, photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved transient PL results verify that electron-hole pairs separation efficiency of MoP-In 2 S 3 composites has been immensely elevated compared to pristine In 2 S 3 . The effective separation of photocarriers is attributed to the appropriate Schottky energy barrier, band bending and Fermi level rearrangement between MoP and In 2 S 3 . Furthermore, the X-ray photoelectron spectra confirmed that electrons transferred from In 2 S 3 to MoP in Schottky heterojunction. Importantly, MoP possesses active sites for H 2 generation resulting from nearly zero binding for H atoms and low onset overpotentials. As expected, the 25 %MoP-In 2 S 3 composites exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity (481.73 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 ), which was about 23 times than In 2 S 3 -1 %Pt (20.73 μmol·h −1 ·g −1 ). Hence, the enhanced photocatalytic performance was ascribed to not only the formed Schottky heterojunction leading to better charge separation, but also MoP as the active sites accelerated the surface proton reduction reaction. The research furnishes a thought that suitable semiconductors and metal-like were selected to construct high performance and low-cost Schottky heterojunction with efficient charge separation and active sites for resultful photocatalytic H 2 generation.

MoP@NiCo-LDH on nickel foam as bifunctional electrocatalyst for high efficiency water and urea–water electrolysis

Tuo Wang,Huimin Wu,Chuanqi Feng,Lei Zhang,Jiujun Zhang

Water electrolysis is an important way to produce hydrogen at the cathode, but the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode has a high overpotential. Using the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) to replace OER has been an energy-saving approach for its lower electrode potential, and also a potential approach for wastewater treatment. In this paper, novel materials of MoP@NiCo-LDH/NF-x (x = 10, 20, 30 minutes) are synthesized and explored as bifunctional catalysts for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the cathode and the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) or the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anodes of urea–water or water electrolysis. The morphologies and compositions of such catalyst materials are characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. The catalytic activity and stability are measured by linear sweep voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, chronoamperometry, etc. The results indicate that MoP@NiCo-LDH/NF-20 has better catalytic performance, and can be used as a bifunctional catalyst for both HER and OER/UOR in the electrolysis. A two-electrode electrolyser (MoP@NiCo-LDH/NF-20‖MoP@NiCo-LDH/NF-20) is constructed. At 100 mA cm−2, the two-electrode electrolyser needs only 1.405 V, while the precious metal electrolyser Pt/C/NF‖IrO2/NF needs 1.697 V at the same current density, indicating that MoP@NiCo-LDH/NF-20 could be a promising bifunctional electrocatalyst in water and urea–water electrolysis for the treatment of urea wastewater and hydrogen production.

Construction and modulation of Co2P/MoP/CC heterojunction with porous octahedral structure to improve the Overall Water Splitting capacity

Dongfeng Sun,Jiaxin Liu,Pengpeng Qiang,Wanquan Ma,Yanning Qu,Shukai Ding,Yu Yuan,Zhiru Li,Bingshe Xu

Designing efficient water splitting electrocatalysts in alkaline electrolytes is crucial but also presents significant challenges. In this study, Co 2 P/MoP/CC catalysts were synthesized using a hydrothermal method and in situ phosphorization with carbon cloth as the substrate. This unique porous octahedral structure features large specific surface area, exposing more active sites and aiding in bubble transportation. At a current density of 10 mA/cm², the overpotentials for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are 86 mV and 280 mV, respectively. This excellent performance is attributed to the formation of a Co 2 P/MoP heterojunction, which promotes electron transfer and enhances the adsorption strength of intermediates. In the overall water splitting experiment, only a low potential of 1.65 V is required to reach 10 mA/cm² and maintain stability for 100,000 seconds. This study offers a novel strategy for the development of efficient water electrolysis catalysts.

Electron density modulation of MoP by rare earth metal as highly efficient electrocatalysts for pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction

Peng Wei,Xiaogang Li,Zhimin He,Zesen Li,Xiaoyu Zhang,Xueping Sun,Qing Li,Hui Yang,Jiantao Han,Yunhui Huang

Profiting from Pt-like electronic structure and high electrical conductivity, molybdenum phosphide (MoP) has received widespread attention as a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst. Although various effective strategies have been developed to regulate the bare MoP synthesis, the electrocatalytic performance of MoP is still far from satisfactory, especially in pH-universal applications. Recently, doping of heterogeneous elements, particularly for rare earth (RE) metals, has been emerged as an effective method to precisely regulate the local electronic structure of phosphides. Herein, the novel and controllable La/Yb-doped MoP nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon matrix (MoP@NC) are synthesized. The as-prepared La/Yb-doped catalysts (RE-MoP@NC (RE = La, Yb)) exhibit fantastic HER electrocatalytic performance for both activity and durability in a wide pH range. Detailed structural characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations validate that the electronic densities around Mo and P atoms are effectively tuned by La/Yb doping atoms, resulting in the optimization in Gibbs free energy of MoP toward the hydrogen adsorption, which can boost its intrinsic HER activity. This research enriches RE-modified catalysts and reveals that the RE metal doping can be extended to other non-noble metal catalysts as a general method.

Efficiently improving the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution of g-C3N4 by (Pt/MoP) composite co-catalyst with low amount of Pt

Jiawei Zhang,Yuying Dang,Wei Wang,Haijuan Zhan,Xudong Song,Baojun Ma

g-C 3 N 4 has great potential as metal-free and low-cost photocatalyst . However, its efficiency of photo-excited carriers separation is very low, it needs large amount of Pt (such as 3.0%) to resolve this problem. Here, we designed composite co-catalyst (Pt/MoP) and prepared (Pt/MoP)/g-C 3 N 4 . The optimal activity of (Pt/MoP)/g-C 3 N 4 reaches 531.75 μmol/h/g with 1.0% Pt. Compared with 3.0%Pt/g-C 3 N 4 , the activity of (Pt/MoP)/g-C 3 N 4 increased 2 times, whereas the amount of Pt is reduced 3 times. Photoelectrochemistry , surface photovoltage (SPV) and transient photovoltage (TPV) spectra prove (Pt/MoP) can effectively separate photo-excited carriers, thereby improve photocatalyst activity of g-C 3 N 4 . Here, MoP acts as electron storage due to the large capacitance, and Pt acts as proton reduction sites. This article gives a method to effectively reduce the amount of noble metal in photocatalysts.

Flexible Membrane Consisting of MoP Ultrafine Nanoparticles Highly Distributed Inside N and P Codoped Carbon Nanofibers as High-Performance Anode for Potassium-Ion Batteries

Zhibin Yi,Ying Liu,Yingzhi Li,Liangjun Zhou,Zhenyu Wang,Jianqiao Zhang,Hua Cheng,Zhouguang Lu

Rechargeable potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have attracted tremendous attention as potential electrical energy storage systems due to the special merit of abundant resources and low cost of potassium. However, one critical barrier to achieve practical application of PIBs has been the lack of suitable electrode materials. Here, a novel flexible membrane consisting of N, P codoped carbon nanofibers decorated with MoP ultrafine nanoparticles (MoP@NPCNFs) is fabricated via a simple electrospinning method combined with the later carbonization and phosphorization process. The 3D porous CNF structure in the as-synthesized composite can shorten the transport pathways of K-ions and improve the conductivity of electrons. The ultrafine MoP nanoparticles can guarantee high specific capacity and the N, P co-doping could improve wettability of electrodes to electrolytes. As expected, the free-standing MoP@NPCNF electrode demonstrates a high capacity of 320 mAh g −1 at 100 mA g −1 , a superior rate capability maintaining 220 mAh g −1 at 2 A g −1 , as well as a capacity retention of more than 90% even after 200 cycles. The excellent rate performance, high reversible capacity, long-term cycling stability, and facile synthesis routine make this hybrid membrane promising anode for potassium-ion batteries.
