HsGDY on Ni Foam for Loading MoS2/Ni3S2 to Enhance the Performance on Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Jiao Xiang,Yuanduo Qu,Yanxin Zeng,Senyu Hu,Huiling Xu,Hong Xia,Muwei Ji,Lianfeng Duan,Fushen Lu

Lithium–sulfur batteries are considered important devices for the power of movable equipment, but there are still some challenges that limit their applications, such as how to obtain a cathode for high sulfide adsorption and rapid conversion. Here, a new strategy is proposed to enhance the performance of lithium–sulfur batteries by growing 3-dimensional hydrogen-substituted graphdiyne (HsGDY) layers on Ni foam via Glaser cross-coupling reaction to anchor MoS2/Ni3S2, enhancing the conductivity of host material of S. The results show that the 3-dimensional HsGDY framework enables the fast adsorption of lithium polysulfides and the Ni3S2/MoS2 performs as the reaction center with a low charge transfer resistance. The charge capacity of Ni@HsGDY/MoS2/Ni3S2 cell is up to 1,234.7 mAh·g−1 at the first circle, and the specific capacity keeps 486 mAh·g−1 after 500 cycles at a current density of 2 C. The incorporation of HsGDY into the cathode promotes the adsorption and the conversion of polysulfides, paving a path to obtain lithium–sulfur batteries with high energy density.

Yali Yao,Jinmei He,Xuedan Zhu,Leihuan Mu,Jiehui Li,Kanshe Li,Mengnan Qu

Rationally designing cost-efficient, high-activity and durable electrocatalysts are used for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is sense to solve the energy crisis and conversion. Herein, the heterostructure superwetting Co–MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 -GO/NF electrode is successfully fabricated by a typical hydrothermal reaction and it's electrocatalytic performance is also systematically studied. Thanks to the establishment of Co doped MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 heterojunction , the improvement conductivity by the addition of graphene oxide (GO), and the superhydrophilicity and superaerophobicity of microstructure, the electrode shows excellent catalytic characteristics and only need an overpotential of 123 mV for OER and 161 mV for HER to reach 10 mA cm −2 and can work steadily for 15 h in alkaline solution. Remarkebly, the superwetting heterojunction electrode demonstrated excellent overall water decomposition ability when used as bifunctional electrocatalyst in 1.0 M KOH and only 1.47 V is required to achieve 10 mA cm −2 . Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show the constructed heterogeneous interface and Co doping are conducive to optimizing the chemisorption energy of hydrogen-containing intermediates. This work provides a new way of thinking that collaborative optimization of electrode structure and surface wettability regulation to increase the active area of reaction and accelerate the bubble release toward high-performance OER and HER electrodes .

Inverted-design for highly-active hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst of MoS2@Ni3S2 core-shell via unlocking the potential of Mo

Chao Song,Yuhua Liu,Chengxiang Huang,Miao Liu,Nailin Yue,Zunhao Zhang,Zizhun Wang,Xu Zou,Wei Zhang,Weitao Zheng

Through inverted-design rather than modifying the generally-assumed S active sites in popular MoS 2 , we unlock the potential of Mo sites and successfully prepared novel MoS 2 @Ni 3 S 2 /NF core-shell nanospheres as a catalyst for the high-performance hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The ΔG H at the Mo site is optimized via Ni 3 S 2 to achieve excellent HER activity. At low current densities, it has similar activity to the Pt/C. However, its performance is better than Pt/C at high density. Moreover, our catalyst shows a considerable stability at a variety of current densities for 50 h, promising to substitute noble metal catalysts in application of commercial alkaline electrocatalysts .

Interlaced rosette-like MoS2/Ni3S2/NiFe-LDH grown on nickel foam: A bifunctional electrocatalyst for hydrogen production by urea-assisted electrolysis

Maoxiao He,Shengnan Hu,Chuanqi Feng,Huimin Wu,Huakun Liu,He Mei

In targeting the most important energy and environmental issues in current society, the development of low-cost, bifunctional electrocatalysts for urea-assisted electrocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) production is an urgent and challenging task. In this work, interlaced rosette-like MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-layered double hydroxide/nickel foam (LDH/NF) is successfully synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal reaction . Due to its unique interlaced heterostructure , MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF exhibits excellent bifunctional catalytic activity towards the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in 1.0 M KOH with 0.5 M urea. In a concurrent two-electrode electrolyser (MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH/NF(+,-)), only voltage of 1.343 V is required to reach 50 mA cm −2 , which is 216 mV lower than for pure water splitting. Furthermore, after 16 h of urea electrolysis in 1.0 M KOH with 0.5 M urea, the current density remains at 98% of the original value. Thus, the catalyst is not only favorable for H 2 production, but also has great significance for the problem of urea-rich wastewater treatment .

Urea-assisted enhanced electrocatalytic activity of MoS2–Ni3S2 for overall water splitting

Yuqi Liu,Yue Yu,Zhongcheng Mu,Yuanhong Wang,Usman Ali,Shengyu Jing,Shuangxi Xing

The design and synthesis of non-precious metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts with low cost and high performance for hydrogen and oxygen evolution in water are of great importance for renewable energy. Transition metal sulfides have attracted extensive interest owing to their easily adjustable electronic structures and rich chemical properties. Herein, the growth of MoS2–Ni3S2 on a nickel foam (MoS2–Ni3S2/NF) surface is investigated in the presence of urea, which can tune the morphology, surface electronic state and surface hydroxyl content of the product. The MoS2–Ni3S2/NF with optimal urea content shows remarkable electrocatalytic activity to hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions with the corresponding overpotential at 100 mA cm−2 of only 181 mV and 355 mV, respectively. Upon using the product as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting, an overvoltage as low as 1.56 V is required and the stability is excellent for more than 80 000 s at 10 mA cm−2.

Improving alkaline hydrogen evoluation reaction efficiency through 1T/2H-MoS2/Ni3S2 heterostructure design

Nazeer Sana,Han Jingwei,Qi Junjie

Due to the fact that fossil fuels are limited and the world’s energy demand is rising, economic catalysts with exceptional stability and efficiency must be produced right now. MoS 2 ’s successfully increased catalytic activity by interfacial coupling and phase engineering. The 1T/2H-MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 composite was effectively created in this study by adding Ni 3 S 2 material on top of 1T/2H-MoS 2 (Mo: S = 1:4). The effects of varying concentrations of Ni 3 S 2 on hydrogen evaluation reaction characteristics are examined using the hydrothermal technique. The composite sample with an appropriate amount of Ni 3 S 2 has the best hydrogen evolution performance when compared to samples with other amounts of Ni 3 S 2 . The sample’s overpotential at 1 M KOH is 124 mV at 10 mAcm −2 , and its Tafel slope is 138.0 mVdec −1 . In addition, the sample exhibits good air stability and hydrogen evolution stability. Also, to accelerate the kinetics of hydrogen evolution and encourage H 2 O dissociation in an alkaline environment, Ni 3 S 2 efficiently stimulates MoS 2 ’s inert base surface, creates a rich coupling boundary, and greatly enhances the performance of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution. A hierarchically-assembled Fe–MoS2/Ni3S2/nickel foam electrocatalyst for efficient water splitting

Jiang-Yan Xue,Fei-Long Li,Zhong-Yin Zhao,Cong Li,Chun-Yan Ni,Hong-Wei Gu,Pierre Braunstein,Xiao-Qing Huang,Jian-Ping Lang

The development of bifunctional non-noble metal electrocatalysts demonstrating high activity and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of great significance for renewable and clean energy. In this work, we report hierarchically structured integrated Fe–MoS2/Ni3S2/NF (NF = nickel foam) materials prepared by a facile in situ solvothermal method, and among them, the Fe-doped MoS2 was assembled into spine-like nanorods. The optimized electrocatalyst (denoted as Fe–MoS2/Ni3S2/NF-2) demonstrated excellent activity and durability for performing the HER and OER in an alkaline electrolyte (pH = 14) with low overpotentials of 130.6 mV and 256 mV (vs. RHE) at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, as well as no significant loss in catalytic performance even after 2000 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles. An outstanding durability of 180 h could be achieved for OER. The overall water splitting made up of the two-electrode system with Fe–MoS2/Ni3S2/NF-2 as both the anode and the cathode required a voltage of only 1.61 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm−2 along with an outstanding long-term stability of 20 h, displaying its great potential for application in water splitting. The effective construction of multi-component synergistic structures shows a good pathway for high-performance electrocatalysis and energy storage.

One-step fabrication of MoS2/Ni3S2 with P-doping for efficient water splitting

Dunyuan Jin,Fen Qiao,Wenjie Liu,Yanzhen Liu,Yi Xie,Haitao Li

Designing and building high-performance bifunctional electrocatalysts is critical for water splitting. Herein, an efficient P-doped molybdenum disulfide/nickel subsulfide (abbreviated as P-MoS2/Ni3S2/NF hereafter) catalyst was rationally prepared through a facile one-step hydrothermal process. The heterogeneous structure formed by the combination of MoS2 and Ni3S2 can improve the electrolytic performance of water in an alkaline medium. The addition of a P source in the reaction reduces the agglomeration of the catalyst, and the electronic structure of MoS2/Ni3S2 is simultaneously optimized by the doped P atoms in MoS2, thus promoting conductivity and increasing the valence state of the Ni species. Low overpotentials of only 136 mV and 95 mV are required to generate 10 mA cm−2 for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), respectively. Most significantly, when P-MoS2/Ni3S2/NF is used as the cathode and anode for the electrolysis of water, a voltage of 1.48 V is required to produce 10 mA cm−2. This work provides feasible ideas for the rational construction of bifunctional catalysts with outstanding performance, which may offer a reference for designing non-precious electrocatalysts for water splitting.

MoS2/Ni3S2 Schottky heterojunction regulating local charge distribution for efficient urea oxidation and hydrogen evolution

Yufei Ren,Chuantao Wang,Wen Duan,Lihai Zhou,Xiangxiang Pang,Danjun Wang,Yanzhong Zhen,Chunming Yang,Ziwei Gao

Electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction (UOR) is a prospective method to substitute the slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and solve the problem of urea-rich water pollution due to the low thermodynamic voltage, but its complex six-electron oxidation process greatly impedes the overall efficiency of electrolysis. Here, density functional theory (DFT) calculations imply that the metallic Ni 3 S 2 and semiconductive MoS 2 could form Mott-Schottky catalyst because of the suitable band structure . Therefore, we synthesized MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 electrocatalyst by a simple hydrothermal method , and studied its UOR and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance. The formed MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 Schottky heterojunction is only required 109  and 166 mV to obtain ±10 mA cm −2 for UOR and HER, respectively, showing great bifunctional catalytic activity. Moreover, the full urea electrolysis driven by MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 delivers 10 and 100 mA cm −2 at a relatively low potential of 1.44 and 1.59 V. Comprehensive experiments and DFT calculations demonstrate that the MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 Schottky heterojunction causes self-driven charge transfer at the interface and forms built-in electric field, which is not only benefit to reduce H* adsorption energy , but also helps to adjust the absorption and directional distribution of urea molecules, thereby promoting the activity of decomposition of water and urea. This research furnishes a tactic to devise more efficient catalysts for H 2 generation and the treatment of urea-rich water pollution.

Ni(OH)2-derived lamellar MoS2/Ni3S2/NF with Fe-doped heterojunction catalysts for efficient overall water splitting

Minghao Dou,Mengjie Yao,Kai Ding,Yuye Cheng,Hongyu Shao,Shenjie Li,Yanyan Chen

Heterostructures formed by combining semiconductor materials with different band structures can provide work functions, d-band positions and electronic properties different from bulk materials and are considered as an effective strategy to improve the catalytic activity through electronic modification. In this study, an efficient MoS2/Fe-Ni3S2/NF heterojunction material was prepared by a two-step hydrothermal method. With the help of flake Ni(OH)2 synthesized in the first step, growth sites were provided for flake Ni3S2. The electronic structure of Ni3S2 was optimized by Fe doping, while the construction of the MoS2/Fe-Ni3S2 heterostructure allowed the catalyst to expose more active sites. MoS2/Fe-Ni3S2/NF exhibited a small charge transfer resistance and excellent electrocatalytic performance. At a current density of 10 mA cm−2, only low overpotentials of 148 mV and 118 mV were required for the oxygen precipitation reaction (OER) and hydrogen precipitation reaction (HER), respectively. Notably, when MoS2/Fe-Ni3S2/NF is used as the anode and cathode for overall hydrolysis, only 1.51 V is required to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2, demonstrating its great potential for application in hydrolysis. This work provides a feasible idea for the rational construction of non-precious metal bifunctional electrocatalysts with excellent performance.

The Core/Shell Structure P Doped MoS2@Ni3S2 Nanorods Array for High Current Density Hydrogen Evolution in Alkaline and Acidic Electrolyte

Yong Gao,Dani Zhang,Jingjing Li,Hao Gong,Cheng Jiang,Hairong Xue,Xianli Huang,Tao Wang,Jianping He

Graphical The P doped MoS 2 @Ni 3 S 2 nanorods array with core/shell structure was prepared through successive sulfuration and phosphorization strategies, which exhibits close catalytic activity to Pt/C, the overpotential is only 290 mV at 250 mA cm −2 . Electrocatalysis is the most promising strategy to generate clean energy H 2 , and the development of catalysts with excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance at high current density that can resist strong alkaline and acidic electrolyte environment is of great significance for practical industrial application. Therefore, a P doped MoS 2 @Ni 3 S 2 nanorods array (named P-NiMoS) was successfully synthesized through successive sulfuration and phosphorization. P-NiMoS presents a core/shell structure with a heterojunction between MoS 2 (shell) and Ni 3 S 2 (core). Furthermore, the doping of P modulates the electronic structure of the P-NiMoS; the electrons transfer from the t 2g orbital of Ni element to the e g empty orbital of Mo element through the Ni−S−Mo bond at the Ni 3 S 2 and MoS 2 heterojunction, facilitating the hydrogen evolution reaction. As a result, P-NiMoS exhibits excellent HER activity; the overpotential is 290 mV at high current density of 250 mA cm −2 in alkaline electrolyte, which is close to Pt/C (282 mV@250 mA cm −2 ), and P-NiMoS can stably evolve hydrogen for 48 h.
