3D MoS2@TiO2@poly(methyl methacrylate) nanocomposite with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Yang Li,Zhao Wang,Hujie Zhao,Xiaojun Huang,Mujie Yang

Formation of heterostructure and nanostructure is promising approach to improving the photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 based photocatalysts . In this work, MoS 2 @TiO 2 @poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared by freeze drying of hydrothermally treated electrospun PMMA nanofibers containing titanium n-butoxide and MoS 2 nanosheets . As-prepared nanocomposite revealed a 3D nanofiber network structure with high specific surface (83.6 m 2 /g), in which MoS 2 nanosheets loaded with TiO 2 nanoparticles were distributed on the surface of PMMA fibers. MoS 2 @TiO 2 @PMMA showed better photocatalytic performance than MoS 2 @PMMA, TiO 2 @PMMA, MoS 2 @TiO 2 and MoS 2 @P25@PMMA towards the photodegradation of methyl orange (MO) under UV illumination. Typically, MoS 2 @TiO 2 @PMMA (100 mg) could degrade MO (10 mg/L, 100 mL) completely in 40 min under UV irradiation , revealing good photocatalytic activity . Moreover, the nanocomposite could be facilely recovered by filtration, and maintain almost the same photocatalytic activity after cycling tests for ten times, indicating excellent stability and recyclability. The enhanced photocatalytic performance of the nanocomposite might relate to the heterostructure between MoS 2 and TiO 2 to suppress the recombination of photo-induced charge, and the 3D hierarchical nanoweb structure to afford large specific surface area and high density of active sites.

Influence of MoS2/TiO2 on the behavior of heavy oil hydrogenation and coke generation

Xiaoning Zhang,Buning Chen,Jianwei Wang,Yusheng Zhou,Xueli Huang,He Huang

The high tolerance to feed oil makes slurry bed hydrocracking technology one of the main streams of research, but the relationship between hydrogenation and deactivation of slurry bed catalysts remains unclear. In this study, the distribution of vacuum residue (VR) hydrogenation products, coke generation, and catalyst deactivation patterns were analyzed using MoS 2 /TiO 2 as the hydrogenation catalyst. With an increase in the reaction temperature or decrease in the hydrogen pressure, the cracking performance gradually improved, the hydrogenation saturation effect gradually weakened, and the oil-to-coke ratio (OCR) gradually decreased. This implies that the influence of the lightning effect from coke generation gradually increased. The conversion rate of VR to gasoline and diesel components is 3.8 times higher than the conversion rate to coke and gas. At lower temperatures, coke was dominated by graphitic carbon encapsulated on the catalyst surface. As the temperature increased, the content and lamellar diameter of graphitic carbon decreased, and the content of amorphous carbon increased. An increase in temperature also promoted the dealkylation reaction and coke condensation, resulting in a decrease in pyrolytic activity. VR hydrogenation was subjected to kinetic analysis, and a model for MoTi-5-catalyzed VR deactivation was developed using OCR to deduce the degree of contribution of coke generation to lightning.

Preparation of a highly active MoS2/TiO2 composite for photocatalytic oxidation of nitrite under solar irradiation

Huazhen Cao,Chenxi Jia,Huibin Zhang,Guangya Hou,Yiping Tang,Guoqu Zheng

MoS2/TiO2 composite photocatalysts with visible-light activity were in situ fabricated on titanium substrates via a simple two-step hydrothermal synthesis method, using titanium foil as the Ti source. The structure, morphology, composition and optical properties of the as-prepared photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, UV-vis and PL analyses, respectively. TiO2 exists in the form of nanofibers (NFs), with their length ranging from about 40 nm to 150 nm and a diameter of about 10 nm. MoS2 microspheres are homogeneously dispersed on the surface of TiO2 NFs, forming a MoS2/TiO2 composite. The photocatalytic oxidation rate of NO2− under simulated solar irradiation can reach 62% by the MoS2/TiO2 composite synthesized in a hydrothermal system with a C2H5NS/Na2MoO4 molar ratio of 1 : 0.6 under 200 °C for 24 h, which is much higher than that by pristine TiO2 NFs, P25 and pure MoS2. The photocatalytic oxidation process of NO2− obeys the Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model (pseudo-first order reaction), and the reaction rate constant (k) of the as-prepared composite is about 0.19194 h−1. The presence of MoS2 significantly enhances the visible light absorption of the catalyst, which is conducive to the generation of electrons and holes, thus guaranteeing good photoactivity of the catalyst. The band gap of the composite is about 2.2 eV, indicating the enhanced absorption of visible light. By this simple and low-consumption method, the composite is firmly combined with the titanium substrate, which is convenient for recycling and environmentally friendly implementation.

Interfacial covalent bonding of Ni doped MoS2/TiO2/Ti3C2Tx composites for electromagnetic wave absorption performance

Dongjie Jia,Xianyu Li,Rongyan Cai,Bochao Ma,Qixian Zhao,Tonglin Chigan,Peipei Yang

Two-dimensional MXene and its composites are among the most attractive electromagnetic wave absorption (EMA) materials due to their unique structure. While previous studies have investigated 2D/2D MoS 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x heterojunctions for EMA, there is still a need for further adjustments to interface structure to enhance polarized electron density and electron transfer capacity. In this study, Cl-Ti 3 C 2 T x was prepared by Lewis acid molten salt etching of Ti 3 AlC 2 , and S-Ti 3 C 2 T x was prepared by replacing Cl with S. MoS 2 nanosheets were grown on the surface of S-Ti 3 C 2 T x by a simple hydrothermal method, forming a Ti-S-Mo covalent interface. The EMA properties of the composites were further optimized by adjusting the interface oriented polarization and electronic structure through Ni doping. Compared to MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x , the electromagnetic wave absorption performance of Ni-MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x had been significantly improved. When the Ni doping amount was 0.086 mmol, the minimum reflection loss of Ni-MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x could reach −48.04 dB at 8.64 GHz, with an effective absorption bandwidth of 3.28 GHz. This study provides theoretical basis and experimental evidence for the follow-up research of MXene-based composite EMA materials.

Synthesis of recyclable SERS platform based on MoS2@TiO2@Au heterojunction for photodegradation and identification of fungicides

Qingyi Wei,Qirong Dong,Da-Wen Sun,Hongbin Pu

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrates based on metal/semiconductors have attracted much attention due to their excellent photocatalytic activity and SERS performance. However, they generally exhibit low light utilization and photocatalytic efficiencies. Herein, molybdenum disulfide coated titanium dioxide modified with gold nanoparticles (MoS 2 @TiO 2 @Au) as a heterojunction-based recyclable SERS platform was fabricated for the efficient determination of fungicides. Results showed that the MoS 2 @TiO 2 @Au platform could rapidly degrade 90.7% crystal violet in 120 min under solar light irradiation and enable reproducible and sensitive SERS analysis of three fungicides (methylene blue, malachite green, and crystal violet) and in-situ monitor of the photodegradation process. The platform could also be reused five times due to the unique integrated merits of the MoS 2 @TiO 2 @Au heterojunction. Meanwhile, experiments in determining methylene blue in prawn protein solution achieved a limit of detection of 1.509 μg/L. Therefore, it is hoped that this work could expand detection applications of photocatalytic materials.

Revealing the Polaron State at the MoS2/TiO2 Interface

Miaomiao Xiang,Xiaochuan Ma,Chang Gao,Ziyang Guo,Chenxi Huang,Yue Xing,Shijing Tan,Jin Zhao,Bing Wang,Xiang Shao

Interfacial polarons determine the distribution of free charges at the interface and thus play important roles in manipulating the physicochemical properties of hybridized polaronic materials. In this work, we investigated the electronic structures at the atomically flat interface of the single-layer MoS2 (SL-MoS2) on the rutile TiO2 surface using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our experiments directly visualized both the valence band maximum and the conduction band minimum (CBM) of SL-MoS2 at the K point, which clearly defines a direct bandgap of ∼2.0 eV. Detailed analyses corroborated by density functional theory calculations demonstrated that the CBM of MoS2 is formed by the trapped electrons at the MoS2/TiO2 interface that couple with the longitudinal optical phonons in the TiO2 substrate through an interfacial Fröhlich polaron state. Such an interfacial coupling effect may register a new route for tuning the free charges in the hybridized systems of two-dimensional materials and functional metal oxides.

MoS2 Nanosheet Loaded with TiO2 Nanoparticles: An Efficient Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Yongzhen Shen,Xiaohui Ren,Xiang Qi,Jie Zhou,Zongyu Huang,Jianxin Zhong

The exploration of high efficient eletrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a challenge as well as an opportunity for future applications in renewable sustainable energy. In this paper, a two-dimensional laminate MoS2/TiO2 heterostructure, in which the MoS2 nanosheet is loaded with TiO2 nanoparticles, have been synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process. The as-prepared MoS2/TiO2 electrode demonstrates improved electrocatalytic performance compared to bare MoS2 or TiO2 electrodes. Subsequently, a series of characterization techniques including X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy are carried out to confirm crystallization of MoS2/TiO2 hybridization. Additional morphological and microstructural tests verify a distinct MoS2 framework, indicating a relative stability of MoS2 nanosheet platform. Electrochemical measurements reveal the overpotential and Tafel slope of as-prepared MoS2/TiO2 electrode are −185 mV and 46 mV/dec, which are very close to that of Pt electrode. The HER improvement is proposed to be attributed to the increase conductivity which derives from the reactive MoS2 layer structure, as well as the synergic effect of MoS2/TiO2 heterostructure. We hope this work could provide a novel prototype for the efficient hybrid HER catalysts.

Ni-modulated MoS2@TiO2 catalyst enhances coal tar hydro-upgrading efficiency

Weihan Zhang,Xueli Huang,Xiaoning Zhang,He Huang,Bing Sun,Wei Jiang,Qiya Wang,Na Liu

Background Existing molybdenum-based catalysts exhibit unsatisfactory performance in coal tar hydro-upgrading due to limited active sites and weak cracking capability. Methods Supported NiMoS x @TiO 2 catalysts with a tunable Ni/Mo atomic ratio were prepared via a two-step method and applied in coal tar hydrogenation. Findings Importantly, Ni shows dual regulation over MoS 2 formation. With Ni/Mo ≈ 0.1, Ni promotes the conversion of Mo 7 S x O (21− x ) intermediates to highly dispersed, truncated MoS 2 slabs (1–2 layers, 3–8 nm), enhancing nucleation while suppressing stacking and achieving a 64.99 % gasoline and diesel yield. When Ni/Mo ≥ 0.3, excess Ni consumes sulfide to form NiS x and occupies TiO 2 anchoring sites, hindering MoS 2 growth and driving slab fusion into thicker aggregates (4–8 layers, 20–40 nm) that bury edges. This study reveals Ni’s dual-regulation mechanism on MoS 2 nucleation and layer-number evolution, which governs edge-site exposure and dictates coal-tar hydro-upgrading performance.

Hierarchical MoS2@TiO2 Heterojunctions for Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance and Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Yu Dong,Sheng-You Chen,Yi Lu,Yu-Xuan Xiao,Jie Hu,Si-Ming Wu,Zhao Deng,Ge Tian,Gang-Gang Chang,Jing Li,Silvia Lenaerts,Christoph Janiak,Xiao-Yu Yang,Bao-Lian Su

Graphical Fused is better : We employed protonic titanate nanosheets as the precursor for TiO 2 nanosheets and used a one-step hydrothermal method to synthesize hierarchical MoS 2 @TiO 2 heterojunctions. The TiO 2 -loaded hierarchical flower-like MoS 2 structure can enhance the carrier transfer efficiency owing to the formation of a nanofusion interface between TiO 2 and MoS 2 (see figure). Hierarchical MoS 2 @TiO 2 heterojunctions were synthesized through a one-step hydrothermal method by using protonic titanate nanosheets as the precursor. The TiO 2 nanosheets prevent the aggregation of MoS 2 and promote the carrier transfer efficiency, and thus enhance the photocatalytic and electrocatalytic activity of the nanostructured MoS 2 . The obtained MoS 2 @TiO 2 has significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity in the degradation of rhodamine B (over 5.2 times compared with pure MoS 2 ) and acetone (over 2.8 times compared with pure MoS 2 ). MoS 2 @TiO 2 is also beneficial for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution (26 times compared with pure MoS 2 , based on the cathodic current density). This work offers a promising way to prevent the self-aggregation of MoS 2 and provides a new insight for the design of heterojunctions for materials with lattice mismatches.

Synthesis of MoS2/TiO2 Nanophotocatalyst and Its Enhanced Visible Light Driven Photocatalytic Performance

Teng Wei,Wang Youmei,Lin Qin,Zhu Hui,Tang Yubin,Li Xinyong

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), as a typical layered transition metal sulfide, has been widely used in photocatalysis. Here, we report layered MoS2 nanosheet-coated TiO2 heterostructures that were prepared using a simple photo-assisted deposition method. The as-prepared samples were investigated in detail by using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results demonstrated that the MoS2 nanosheets uniformly covered the outer surface of TiO2. The visible light-sensitive photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the removal of methylene blue (MB) and 2-chlorophenol (2-CP) in aqueous solution. Thus, the MoS2/TiO2 heterostructures exhibited improved photocatalytic degradation activity under visible light compared with the pure TiO2. Under visible light irradiation for 90 min, the degradation efficiencies of MB and 2-CP over the MoS2/TiO2 sample (sunlight irradiation time: 30 min) are as high as 93.6% and 70.6%, respectively. Furthermore, the corresponding mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic activity is proposed on the basis of the comprehensively investigated results from the radical trapping experiments, photoluminescence spectroscopy, and electron spin resonance analysis. The hole oxidation, hydroxyl radicals, and superoxide anion radicals act as the active species simultaneously in the photodegradation of the dye molecules. However, of these species, hole oxidation played the most important roles in the photocatalytic reaction.

Du Heng,Zhang Qipeng,Zhao Biao,Marken Frank,Gao Qiancheng,Lu Hongxia,Guan Li,Wang Hailong,Shao Gang,Xu Hongliang,Zhang Rui,Fan Bingbing

In order to prevent the microwave leakage and mutual interference, more and more microwave absorbing devices are added into the design of electronic products to ensure its routine operation. In this work, we have successfully prepared MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x hierarchical composites by one-pot hydrothermal method and focused on the relationship between structures and electromagnetic absorbing properties. Supported by comprehensive characterizations, MoS 2 nanosheets were proved to be anchored on the surface and interlayer of Ti 3 C 2 T x through a hydrothermal process. Additionally, TiO 2 nanoparticles were obtained in situ . Due to these hierarchical structures, the MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composites showed greatly enhanced microwave absorbing performance. The MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composites exhibit a maximum reflection loss value of −33.5 dB at 10.24 GHz and the effective absorption bandwidth covers 3.1 GHz (13.9–17 GHz) at the thickness of 1.0 mm, implying the features of wide frequency and light weight. This work in the hierarchical structure of MoS 2 /TiO 2 /Ti 3 C 2 T x composites opens a promising door to the exploration of constructing extraordinary electromagnetic wave absorbents.

Construction of GO/MoS2/TiO2 ternary heterojunction interfaces for synergistically enhanced electrochemical sensing of acetaminophen

Bao Jiang,Yanhui Niu,Xiuxin Jin,Yuntao Huang,Qin Hu,Yaxin Luo,Jialing Hua

Rational Interface Engineering: We successfully synthesized a GO/MoS 2 /TiO 2 ternary nanocomposite with carefully engineered heterojunction interfaces. This structure not only prevents the restacking of MoS 2 and aggregation of TiO 2 but also facilitates efficient charge separation and accelerates electron transfer rates compared to single or binary counterparts. • Significant Synergistic Enhancement: Rather than simply mixing components, our design yields a substantial improvement in electrochemical performance. The sensor exhibits a 2-fold increase in current response and a significantly lower detection limit compared to the individual MoS 2 electrodes. This result strongly validates the effectiveness of our interface engineering strategy in overcoming the intrinsic limitations of single-component materials. • Self-Cleaning and Anti-Fouling Capability: A distinct advantage of our ternary system is its excellent anti-fouling property. The incorporation of TiO 2 endows the sensor with self-cleaning capabilities (attributed to its photocatalytic activity/surface properties), effectively mitigating electrode passivation caused by the adsorption of oxidation products. This ensures superior operational stability and reproducibility, addressing a common bottleneck in APAP detection. • Practical Robustness: We successfully applied the sensor to the determination of acetaminophen in real pharmaceutical tablets and water samples with satisfactory recovery rates, proving its potential for practical applications in complex matrices. Efficient detection of acetaminophen (APAP) is critical for public health and environmental safety, but traditional electrochemical sensors often suffer from severe electrode passivation and ambiguous interfacial sensing mechanisms. To address these challenges, To address these fundamental challenges, this study constructs a novel photo-assisted electrochemical platform based on a GO/MoS 2 /TiO 2 ternary heterojunction, systematically characterized via XRD, TEM, FTIR, and XPS. Explicitly shifting the focus from conventional metric-chasing (e.g., pursuing extreme detection limits) to rational material design, this work thoroughly elucidates the structure–activity relationship and underlying synergistic mechanisms through comprehensive kinetic investigations (e.g., CV, EIS, and DPV). Experimental results demonstrate that the strategically designed cascaded band structure significantly boosts electrocatalytic activity and interfacial charge transfer. Furthermore, by leveraging the distinct structural advantages of the distinct structural advantages of GO/MoS 2 alongside the photo-assisted properties of TiO 2 , the sensor achieves a dual-mode “anti-fouling and self-cleaning” capability that effectively resolves surface fouling caused by oxidation products. Consequently, the sensor exhibits robust performance with a detection limit of 0.07 µM (S/N = 3) and three wide linear response ranges (7.865∼12.155 µM, 12.155∼71.5 µM and 71.5∼715 µM). Ultimately, this systematic study provides not only a robust platform for real-world APAP monitoring but also a theoretical blueprint for designing next-generation, passivation-resistant sensing interfaces. A photo-assisted GO/MoS 2 /TiO 2 ternary heterojunction sensor was constructed for ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of acetaminophen with enhanced charge transfer and excellent anti-fouling performance.(This graphical abstract was generated using AI tools) Download: Download high-res image (252KB) Download: Download full-size image
