Radar-like MoS2 nanoparticles as a highly efficient 808 nm laser-induced photothermal agent for cancer therapy

Zichen Huang,Yafei Qi,Dexin Yu,Jinhua Zhan

MoS2, a typical transition-metal dichalcogenide, has attracted increasing attention in the field of biomedicine due to its preeminent properties. In this paper, MoS2 nanoparticles with radar-like shapes were demonstrated as 808 nm laser-induced photothermal agents with outstanding photothermal performance. According to our calculations, the radar-like morphology endowed the MoS2 nanoparticles with higher photothermal conversion efficiency (53.3%) compared to other morphologies including nanoflowers, microspheres and irregular nanoparticles. Cytotoxicity assay indicated that the radar-like nanoparticles were biocompatible. Results of in vitro photothermal therapy and apoptosis assay indicated that tumor cells treated with MoS2 radar-like nanoparticles can be seriously damaged. Photothermal therapy on tumor-bearing mice was carried out to further verify the anti-cancer properties of the MoS2 radar-like nanoparticles. All the aforementioned results suggested that the MoS2 radar-like nanoparticles exhibit enormous potential for cancer photothermal therapy.

Programmable-Printing Paper-Based Device with a MoS2 NP and Gmp/Eu-Cit Fluorescence Couple for Ratiometric Tetracycline Analysis in Various Natural Samples

Zongbao Sun,Yunlong Gao,Zeng Niu,Haodong Pan,Xuechao Xu,Wen Zhang,Xiaobo Zou

Paper-based fluorescence devices, with smartphone aids, bring considerable operation convenience for tetracycline (TC) sensing. Nevertheless, they must meet the challenge in real determination against complicated backgrounds. Considering that, we present a programmable-printing paper-based device and then apply it to TC determination for various natural samples. MoS2 NPs and Gmp/Eu-Cit are synthetized as composite probes. A static quenching process is found with MoS2 NP fluorescence at 430 nm, while significant magnification of Gmp/Eu-Cit emission is obtained at 617 nm, establishing a valuable ratiometric indicator. Remarkably, two-stage programmable printing maximizes the proposed sensing capability. A transitive device, containing a gradually changing amount of a certain probe, is prepared to sense TC. With a homemade smartphone application and 3D-printed measurement chamber, the corresponding signals are examined to explore optimal setups. These setups are automatically processed to prepare the final-version device, not requiring manual operations. Benefitting from this interesting feature, the proposed device gains many rewards in performances. It effectively senses TC in a wide range from 12.7 nM to 80 μM and simultaneously provides naked eye-legible signals and smartphone-based readouts with confident selectivity and stability. This device is consequently applied for various samples of soil, river water, milk, and serum and meets well with HPLC–MS and recovery tests.

A Simple α-Ketoglutarate Electrochemical Biosensor Based on Reduced MoS2 Nanoparticle-Gold Nanoparticle Nanocomposite

Yu Yadong,Wu Na,Peng Gang,Li Tao,Jiang Ling,Huang He

Convenient and sensitive methods for the detection of α-ketoglutarate (α-KG) will be beneficial for biomedical diagnosis and microbial fermentation industry. In this work, reduced MoS2 nanoparticles (rMNs) were prepared by ultrasonication and electrochemical reduction. The rMNs were then decorated with gold nanoparticles (Aunano) to fabricate rMNs-Aunano nanocomposite. The glass carbon electrode modified with rMNs-Aunano nanocomposite (rMNs-Aunano-GCE) showed excellent electro-catalytic oxidation toward NADH with a satisfied reproducibility and exhibited linear response in the range of 38.46–214.29 μM. Moreover, the L-Glutamic dehydrogenase modified rMNs-Aunano-GCE exhibited a sensitive and fast response to α-KG, with a linear response range of 11.12–52.94 μM and a detection limit of 6.25 μM. These findings will pave ways for the α-KG detection and the application of MoS2 or other two-dimensional materials in electrochemical sensing.

Fullerene-like MoS2 Nanoparticles as Cascade Catalysts Improving Lubricant and Antioxidant Abilities of Artificial Synovial Fluid

Tongming Chen,Hang Zou,Xiaoju Wu,Yuan Chen,Bo Situ,Lei Zheng,Guowei Yang

Intraarticular injection of hyaluronic acid (HA) for viscosupplementation is a nonsurgical therapy for osteoarthritis (OA). However, HA fails to lubricate under a significant load and tends to be depolymerized by the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in inflammation. Here, we for the first time reported that fullerene-like MoS2 (F-MoS2) nanoparticles are efficient lubricants and antioxidants for artificial synovial fluid. A model of arthrosis was built, to evaluate the tribological behavior of F-MoS2 nanoparticles. The tests showed that they significantly improve the antiwear and friction-reducing abilities of the artificial synovial fluid. More importantly, the F-MoS2 nanoparticles possess intrinsic dual-enzyme-like activity, mimicking superoxide dismutases (SOD) and catalases (CAT) under physiological conditions (pH 7.4, 25 °C). By coupling of these unique properties, a self-organized cascade catalytic system was constructed, which includes the disproportionation of superoxide radicals (O2•–) to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and subsequently the disproportionation of H2O2 into oxygen (O2). The effectiveness of the detox system was evaluated by human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) models exposed to oxidative stress. After that, F-MoS2 nanoparticles were used to regulate the ROS level in artificial synovial fluid containing HA. Relative viscosity measurements showed the excellent protective effect of F-MoS2 nanoparticles against HA oxidative damage offered by O2•–. These results indicate that F-MoS2 nanoparticles are promising candidates for treatment of OA and other diseases caused by lubrication deficiency or oxidative stress.
