MoS2 nanoflowers decorated natural fiber-derived hollow carbon microtubes for boosting perfluorooctanoic acid degradation

Changduo Sun,Min Yu,Yuting Li,Bihui Niu,Fenghui Qin,Na Yan,Yinyin Xu,Yian Zheng

Calotropis gigantea fiber (CGF) is a natural cellulose fiber with thin-walled large lumen. Benefitted from its unique structure, CGF was utilized here as a bio-template for the fabrication of hollow carbon microtubes using a facile hydrothermal method , and simultaneously, nano-sized MoS 2 flowers were in-situ generated along the inner and outside surfaces of carbonized fiber microtubes, forming MoS 2 nanoflowers decorated biochar MoS 2 /CGB. Coupled with dual active centers from non-metallic biochar and metallic MoS 2 , MoS 2 /CGB was then used for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), one emerging pollutant that had received wide attention in recent years. The experimental results indicated that at room temperature and pH 3.0, MoS 2 /CGB exhibited the degradation efficiency of 79.6% for PFOA, and removal percentage of 50.7% for total organic carbon . During the degradation process, the free radical (SO 4 •− /•OH) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 ) routes coexisted, and the amount of SO 4 •− was about 9 times that of •OH. Combined with mass spectrometry , the possible degradation pathway of PFOA was proposed as transforming into short chained C2- to C5-containing carboxylic acids. With Vibrio fischeri as an indicator, the acute toxicity of PFOA solution and intermediates was evaluated, with the inhibition rate decreased from 27.6% to 4.5%. Finally, MoS 2 /CGB had the ability not only for removing perfluorinated compounds with different carbon chain lengths, but also for catalytically degrading PFOA in tap water and Yellow River water . This work provides plant fiber-based sustainable catalyst for potential application in PMS-based system for boosting PFOA degradation.

Layered MoS2 nanoflowers for microwave thermal therapy

Shengping Wang,Longfei Tan,Ping Liang,Tianlong Liu,Jingzhuo Wang,Changhui Fu,Jie Yu,Jianping Dou,Hong Li,Xianwei Meng

Microwave (MW) hyperthermia has received great attention as an emerging green tumor thermotherapy. In this work, layered MoS2 nanoflowers were prepared through a simple bottom-up hydrothermal process. By coating MoS2 nanoflowers with bovine serum albumin (BSA-MoS2), BSA-MoS2 exhibits low biotoxicity and excellent microwave susceptive properties in vitro. Meanwhile, the heating effect improvement by the layered structure was confirmed via a computer-simulated experiment. Finally, layered BSA-MoS2 nanoflowers are designed as MW hyperthermia susceptible agents for in vivo cancer therapy with 100% tumor elimination via MW irradiation at 1.8 W, 450 MHz.

1T/2H MoS2 nanoflowers embedded in porous PDMS sponge with high salt-resistance for efficient and durable solar desalination

Jing Jiang,Huiling Jiang,Ying Xu,Lunhong Ai

Solar water evaporation is emerging as one of the most cost-effective and sustainable technologies for efficient seawater desalination . However, salt crystallization during solar desalination severely limits light absorption and reduces evaporation efficiency. Balancing the desirable evaporation rate and the suppressed salt crystallization is critical for long-term solar desalination, but remains a major challenge. In this work, 1T/2H MoS 2 nanoflower embedded in a macroporous PDMS sponge (MoS 2 /PDMS) was fabricated and used as a novel solar evaporator for efficient and durable solar desalination. Thanks to the broadband absorption of MoS 2 and the thermal insulating PDMS sponge, the MoS 2 /PDMS sponge presents a high evaporation rate of 1.47 kg m −2  h −1 and an evaporation efficiency of 81.5 % in pure water under one sun irradiation (1 kW m −2 ). Importantly, the MoS 2 /PDMS sponge with macroporous structure and wet-state hydrophilic wettability achieves efficient and durable solar desalination in simulated seawater (3.5 wt% NaCl solution), effectively suppressing salt crystallization. This finding offers a new way to design robust evaporators with structural flexibility, efficient evaporation and durable desalting for solar desalination.

Selective SERS Sensing of R6G Molecules Using MoS2 Nanoflowers under Pressure

Hongyan Yu,Yongxue Chen,Zhenyu Wen,Rensheng Wang,Sisi Jia,Wenjie Zhu,Yanping Song,Huanhuan Sun,Bingbing Liu

Pressure-induced surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (PI-SERS) has garnered significant attention as a subfield of SERS detection due to its capacity to regulate the band gap between molecules and substrates through pressure modulation. Currently, SERS detection primarily focuses on single molecules at atmospheric pressure with limited investigations conducted under high pressure conditions. Herein, we employed rose-shaped MoS2 nanoflowers as the SERS substrate and realized selective PI-SERS enhancement of R6G molecules in the binary (MV+R6G) and ternary (MV+R6G+RhB) systems. The MoS2 demonstrated an exceptionally low SERS detection limit of 5 × 10–6 M in binary and ternary systems with equimolar amounts of molecules. High-pressure experimental results indicate that MoS2 displays selective enhancement for R6G molecules, as evidenced by the comparison of the PI-SERS peak intensity ratio between MoS2 and the probe molecules. The proposed enhancement mechanism in binary and ternary SERS systems under high pressure involves pressure-induced changes in both the band structures of the MoS2 substrate and molecules, thereby influencing their charge transfer dynamics. Consequently, this approach holds great promise for practical applications in complex SERS systems operating under extreme conditions.

Piezoelectric activation of peroxymonosulfate by MoS2 nanoflowers for the enhanced degradation of aqueous organic pollutants

Shuhui Liu,Binghua Jing,Chunyang Nie,Zhimin Ao,Xiaoguang Duan,Bo Lai,Youyuan Shao,Shaobin Wang,Taicheng An

Natural mechanical energies, such as wind, tidal waves, and water flow, widely exist in the environment and these inexhaustible natural mechanical energies can be utilized through piezoelectric materials for the degradation of aqueous organic pollutants in the environment. In this work, few-layered molybdenum disulfide nanoflowers (MoS2 NFs) were adopted as a piezocatalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) with ultrasonic waves (US) as the mechanical force for phenol abatement. A much higher degradation efficiency was attained by the integrated US/MoS2 NFs/PMS system compared to other single systems, revealing the markedly synergistic effect of US and MoS2 on PMS activation. Moreover, density functional theory calculations were performed to fundamentally understand the charge distribution in a polarized MoS2 nanosheet under different strains and to understand the piezocatalytic properties of MoS2 nanosheets, as well as reaction pathways between PMS and carriers on the active edges of MoS2 for the production of free radicals. It was found that both sulfate radicals (SO4˙−) and hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) were produced in the US/MoS2 NFs/PMS system. However, SO4˙− was quickly converted into ˙OH via a hydrolysis reaction under US, enabling ˙OH to be the primary reactive oxygen species for phenol oxidation. This work offers an efficient piezocatalyst to activate persulfate for water remediation. More importantly, it provides fundamental insights into the piezoelectricity in two-dimensional semiconducting materials and the mechanism in the piezocatalytic activation of persulfate. Results prove that the combination of piezoelectricity and advanced oxidation processes is promising for water pollution control, and provides a new idea for the application of inexhaustible natural mechanical energy in the environment for environmental remediation.

Neuron-Inspired Design of High-Performance Electrode Materials for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Yu-Lin Bai,Yu-Si Liu,Chao Ma,Kai-Xue Wang,Jie-Sheng Chen

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are generally considered as promising cheap alternatives of lithium-ion batteries for stationary renewable energy storage and have received increasing attention in recent years. The exploration of anode materials with efficient electron transportation is essential for improving the performance of SIBs. Inspired by the signal transfer mode of a neuron, we designed a composite by stringing MoS2 nanoflower (soma) with multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) (axons). High-resolution TEM observation reveals a lattice matching growth mechanism of MoS2 nanosheets on the interface of MWCNTs and the lattice expansion of the (002) plane of MoS2. The lattice matching among the MoS2 nanosheet and MWCNT could facilitate electron transfer and structure maintenance upon cycling. The expanded distance of the (002) plane of MoS2 would also promote the sodium-ion intercalation/deintercalation kinetics of the composite. Benefiting from the structural features, when used as an anode material for SIBs, the composite exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, including high specific capacity, excellent cycle stability, and superior rate capabilities. A stable capacity of 527.7 mAh g–1 can be achieved after 110 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g–1. The neuron-inspired design proposed is a promising and efficient strategy for the development of electrode materials for SIBs with high mass transport kinetics and structural stability.

Three-dimensional MoS2 nanoflowers supported Prussian blue and Au nanoparticles: A peroxidase-mimicking catalyst for the colorimetric detection of hydrogen peroxide and glucose

Lian Ma,Jiao Zhu,Chao Wu,Duo Li,Xuehui Tang,Yue Zhang,Changhua An

Well-dispersed Prussian blue (PB) and Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) loaded three dimensional MoS 2 nanoflowers (PB-Au@MoS 2 NFs) was synthesized by a simple and economical method. The structure, morphology and composition of the hybrid were characterized by XRD, SEM and EDS. Similar to the reported literature, MoS 2 nanoflowers showed peroxidase-like activity in catalyzing the oxidation of 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). This peroxidase-mimicking activity could be enhanced with the introduction of PB and Au NPs. Herein, PB-Au@MoS 2 NFs could be used to establish a new platform for the determination of H 2 O 2 and glucose by the chromogenic reaction. Wide linear ranges with 0–15 μM and 0–120 μM for H 2 O 2 and glucose detection were finally obtained. The detection limits were as low as 0.25 μM and 3 μM (with signal to noise ratio of 3), respectively. The established platform was also used successfully for the determination of glucose in human serum and fruit juice samples with excellent sensitivity and stability.

N-doped MoS2-nanoflowers as peroxidase-like nanozymes for total antioxidant capacity assay

Jing Chen,Fanghong Xu,Qian Zhang,Shuying Li

Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) Assay plays an important role in evaluating the quality of antioxidant food and monitoring the oxidative stress level of human body. It is mainly achieved by measuring the contents of antioxidants such as AA , L-Cys and GSH, while TAC can be detected by using peroxidase-like activity of artificial nanoenzyme materials. In this work, the N-Doped, defect-rich N–MoS 2 NFs nano-materials were used to build the nano enzyme , which has strong stability and high peroxidase-like activity. H 2 O 2 was detected because it can be catalyzed to generate the intermediate ·OH and make TMB appears blue. However, when H 2 O 2 , AA, L-Cys and GSH coexist in solution, due to the oxidation resistance of AA, L-Cys and GSH, they can competitively react with ·OH in solution or reduce TMB in oxidation state (oxTMB), which reduces the characteristic absorption of oxTMB, indirectly achieves the purpose of detecting AA, L-Cys and GSH, and finally realizes the determination of TAC, even in actual serum and saliva samples. At the same time, the N–MoS 2 NFs/NH 2 -MIL-53(Al)+OPD system is further constructed. Based on the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) between NH 2 -MIL-53(Al) and oxidized OPD (oxOPD), the purpose of detecting TAC by fluorescence method was realized.

A MoS2 nanoflower and gold nanoparticle-modified surface plasmon resonance biosensor for a sensitivity-improved immunoassay

Peili Zhao,Yaofei Chen,Yu Chen,Shiqi Hu,Hui Chen,Wei Xiao,Guishi Liu,Yong Tang,Jifu Shi,Zhendan He,Yunhan Luo,Zhe Chen

Biosensors based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) have shown significant applications in drug screening, environmental monitoring, immunoassay, etc.; however, improving the sensitivity of these biosensors is one of the prime tasks at present. In this study, taking advantage of the special optical and morphological characteristics of MoS2 nanoflowers, we synthesized a sensitivity-improved SPR biosensor by successively depositing MoS2 nanoflowers and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on a traditional SPR sensor and then applied this biosensor to the immunoassay of mouse IgG. It was found that the deposition of the MoS2 nanoflowers could improve the bulk refractive index sensitivity from 2212.2 to 2857.2 nm per RIU (RIU: refractive index unit); however, the further addition of AuNPs resulted in a decrease in the bulk refractive index sensitivity to 2149.7 nm per RIU. Moreover, when the proposed biosensor was applied to the IgG immunoassay, a 0.047 nm (μg mL−1)−1 sensitivity of the MoS2–AuNP-modified sensor was achieved, which was ∼3 times that of the unmodified sensor (0.016 nm (μg mL−1)−1). This improvement in the sensitivity of the biosensor towards IgG can be attributed to the flower-like morphology of MoS2 that provides more sites for the loading of AuNPs, thus facilitating the immobilization of a larger amount of IgG antibody on the surface of the sensor. Because of its simple fabrication process and compatibility with the standard bio-activation method of gold surface, the proposed biosensor provides an easily-accessible platform for biological analysis and detection with improved sensitivity.

A sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor for sensitive detection of HER2 based on dual signal amplification of La-MOF-PbO2 and PEI-MoS2NFs composites

Qin Xia,Zhaode Mu,Min Qing,Jing Zhou,Lijuan Bai

In recent decades, the incidence of breast cancer has increased year by year, posing a serious threat to human health and quality of life, and about 30% of breast cancer patients have human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) overexpression. Therefore, HER2 has become an important biomarker and indicator for the clinical evaluation of breast cancer in diagnosis, prognosis and recurrence. In this work, polyethyleneimine functionalized MoS 2 nanoflowers (PEI-MoS 2 NFs) with good electrical conductivity and abundant active binding sites were designed and employed as a sensing platform for immobilizing the primary antibody of HER2 (Ab 1 ). In addition, a La-MOF-PbO 2 composite with a large specific surface area and good conductivity was used to load lots of electroactive toluidine blue (TB) and the secondary antibody of HER2 (Ab 2 ) via gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as the linker. Thus, the constructed sandwich-type electrochemical immunosensor was applied for sensitive detection of HER2, which showed a wide linear range from 100 fg mL −1 to 10 μg mL −1 with a lower limit of detection of 15.64 fg mL −1 . Therefore, the resulting immunosensor in this study would have a potential application in clinical bioanalysis.

Efficient Ofloxacin degradation with Co(Ⅱ)-doped MoS2 nano-flowers as PMS activator under visible-light irradiation

Peng Chen,Yejing Gou,Jiaming Ni,Yumeng Liang,Bingqiao Yang,Feifei Jia,Shaoxian Song

Base on the strong activation activity and affinity of transition metal ions and MoS 2 for peroxymonosulfate (PMS), respectively, Co(Ⅱ)-doped MoS 2 nano-flowers (Co-MoS 2 NFs) with a great photo-response property was facilely synthesized to achieve a more efficient PMS activation for ofloxacian (OFX) degradation. It was found that Co-MoS 2 NFs exhibits superior catalytic activity for OFX degradation under visible-light irradiation, which was attributed to the synergetic effect of doped Co(Ⅱ) and photo-generated carriers to PMS activation. Besides, Co-MoS 2 NFs was able to efficiently degrade OFX within 4 cycles in the presence of PMS while leaked minute amount of Mo and Co ions, implying the excellent cycle stability of Co-MoS 2 NFs. Furthermore, SO 4 •− and 1 O 2 were detected as the primary reactive radicals for OFX degradation in the Co-MoS 2 NFs-PMS system through EPR and quenching tests. This new strategy of coupling doped Co(Ⅱ) and photo-generated carriers for more efficient PMS activation, which will greatly benefit the development of SO 4 •− -based AOPs as well as cater to the demand for environmental remediation in the future.

Functionalized Nano-MoS2 with Peroxidase Catalytic and Near-Infrared Photothermal Activities for Safe and Synergetic Wound Antibacterial Applications

Wenyan Yin,Jie Yu,Fengting Lv,Liang Yan,Li Rong Zheng,Zhanjun Gu,Yuliang Zhao

We have developed a biocompatible antibacterial system based on polyethylene glycol functionalized molybdenum disulfide nanoflowers (PEG-MoS2 NFs). The PEG-MoS2 NFs have high near-infrared (NIR) absorption and peroxidase-like activity, which can efficiently catalyze decomposition of low concentration of H2O2 to generate hydroxyl radicals (·OH). The conversion of H2O2 into ·OH can avoid the toxicity of high concentration of H2O2 and the ·OH has higher antibacterial activity, making resistant bacteria more vulnerable and wounds more easily cured. The PEG-MoS2 NFs combine the catalysis with NIR photothermal effect, providing a rapid and effective killing outcome in vitro for Gram-negative ampicillin resistant Escherichia coli (AmprE. coli) and Gram-positive endospore-forming Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) as compared to catalytic treatment or photothermal therapy (PTT) alone. Wound healing results indicate that the synergy antibacterial system could be conveniently used for wound disinfection in vivo. Interestingly, glutathione (GSH) oxidation can be accelerated due to the 808 nm irradiation induced hyperthermia at the presence of PEG-MoS2 NFs proved by X-ray near-edge absorption spectra and X-ray spectroscopy. The accelerated GSH oxidation can result in bacterial death more easily. A mechanism based on ·OH-enhanced PTT is proposed to explain the antibacterial process.
