We report a one-step hydrothermal method for the preparation of fluorescent molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS2 QDs) and demonstrate the feasibility of fluorescent “turn-off–on” sensing of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) by using the MoS2 QDs. MoS2 QDs having strong blue-green fluorescence at 506 nm and good water-solubility were successfully synthesized by using ammonium tetrathiomolybdate as a single precursor. The fluorescence of MoS2 QDs was first quenched by Fe3+ through the formation of a MoS2 QDs/Fe3+ complex. ATP with the ability to coordinate with Fe3+ caused the dissociation of MoS2 QDs/Fe3+, resulting in the final release of MoS2 QDs and the recovery of fluorescence through a one-step competitive chelating process that took only 10 min to reach equilibrium at room temperature (RT). Facile and rapid sensing of Fe3+ and ATP could thus be achieved through the fluorescent “turn-off–on” strategy. Good linear relationships were obtained over the concentration ranges of 0–200 μM for Fe3+ and 0–140 μM for ATP with a lowest detectable concentration of 5 μM for ATP. Satisfactory results were obtained when the method was applied to a standard addition recovery trial of ATP in human serum samples. No complex surface modification during the preparation or detection process was needed based on the fluorescent “turn-off–on” method of the MoS2 QDs, which suggests its great potential in fluorescent sensing.

Peroxidase-like activity of MoS 2 quantum dots (QDs) can be reversibly regulated by means of Fe 3+ /alendronate sodium (ALDS)-induced aggregation/disaggregation of the QDs in solution. Specifically, Fe 3+ can selectively aggregate the MoS 2 QDs and thus greatly enhance their peroxidase-like activity, while such enhancement can be inhibited in the presence of ALDS owing to the competitive coordination of ALDS with Fe 3+ . By regulating the enzyme-like activity of MoS 2 QDs, different colorimetric signal of a typical substrate of horseradish peroxidase , 3,3΄,5,5΄-tetramethylbenzidine, can be measured in the presence of H 2 O 2 . Based on this mechanism, we develop a colorimetric approach for the determination of ALDS and further applied in quality control of pharmaceutical products, utilizing either smartphone or UV–vis spectrometer as a readout. This detection method is rapid and selective, where derivatization of ALDS before detection is not needed. Such a smartphone-based colorimetric detection platform is promising to be applied in point-of-care testing at home, small clinics, or underdeveloped regions.

Diseases caused by viruses, such as monkeypox virus (MPXV) and human papillomavirus (HPV), pose serious threats to human health and safety. Although numerous strategies have been constructed for detecting MPXV and HPV DNA, most methods require either laborious procedures or complicated instruments involving skilled professionals. In this research, a CRISPR-Cas12a-mediated colorimetric detection platform for MPXV and HPV sensing was constructed for the first time by applying probe DNA to reprogram the catalytic properties of molybdenum disulfide quantum dots (MoS 2 QDs). In the presence of MPXV or HPV targets, the CRISPR-Cas12a trans -cleavage activity is effectively motivated to decompose the probe DNA, leading to the suppression of enzymatic activity DNA enhancer adsorbed on MoS 2 QDs, resulting in greatly decreased catalytic behaviors. The MoS 2 QDs-DNA nanohybrids displayed prominent specificity and sensitivity, with detection limits at subpicomolar levels, as well as excellent stability and accuracy for determining MPXV and HPV DNA in human sera biosamples. Furthermore, the proposed colorimetric biosensing approach can be ensembled with a smartphone platform, allowing visible analysis of DNA targets. Taken together, this colorimetric strategy offers a novel diagnosis method for MPXV and HPV DNA detection, particularly favorable for highly endemic developing countries with restricted medical and instrumental support.

All-solid-state Z-scheme CdS/QDs/ZnIn 2 S 4 architectures with MoS 2 quantum dots as solid-state electron mediator were successfully designed and constructed by optimally combining one-dimensional CdS nanorods, zero-dimensional MoS 2 quantum dots (QDs) and two-dimensional ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets. The photocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen evolution demonstrated that such structural design can synergistically trigger remarkably improved visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity. Photocatalytic H 2 -evolution at 2107.5 μmol g −1 h −1 was achieved on this CdS/QDs/ZnIn 2 S 4 architectures under visible light irradiation, exceeding those of bare CdS nanorods and pure ZnIn 2 S 4 nanosheets by a factor of 26 and 62, respectively. This highly efficient photocatalytic activity arises from the effective charge separation and favourable electron mediator of MoS 2 QDs. The Z-scheme charge separation mechanism was verified by the ESR, PL-TA and organic electron acceptor test.

Magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) have great potential in large-scale energy storage field with high capacity, excellent safety, and low cost. However, the strong solvation effect of Mg2+ will lead to the formation of solvated ions in electrolytes with larger size and sluggish diffusion/reaction kinetics. Here, the concept of interfacial catalytic bond breaking is first introduced into the cathode design of MIBs by hybriding MoS2 quantum dots with VS4 (VS4@MQDs) as the cathode. The “in situ dynamic catalysis and re-equilibration” effects can catalyze the Cl–Mg bond breaking and trigger single Mg2+ insertion/extraction chemistries, which can significantly accelerate the diffusion and reaction kinetics, as verified by the decreased diffusion energy barriers (0.26 eV for Mg2+ vs 2.47 eV for MgCl+) and fast diffusion coefficient. Benefitting from these dynamic catalysis effects, the constructed VS4@MQD-based MIBs deliver a high discharge capacity of ∼120 mA h g–1 at 200 mA g–1 and a long-term cyclic stability of 1000 cycles at 1 A g–1. The improved performance and detailed characterizations well prove that the active ions in MIBs change from MgCl+/Mg2Cl3+ to Mg2+ with fast kinetics.

This research investigates the resistive switching (RS) properties of resistive random-access memory (RRAM) devices incorporating MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) and MoS2 nanosheets. The analysis reveals that reducing the size of MoS2 nanosheets to the size of QDs enhances the bandgap, surface–volume ratio, and the number of edge states, thereby providing additional electron trapping sites for the formation and rupture of conductive filaments (CFs) in RRAM devices. The Al/MoS2 QDs–PVA/ITO/glass devices exhibit enhanced switching ratios and memory windows in comparison to RRAM devices based on MoS2 nanosheets. The enhanced RS performance of the MoS2 QDs can be attributed to their ultra-small size, which enables the concentration of the surrounding electric field and a higher density of sulfur vacancies that facilitate the formation of CFs. However, it is important to highlight that high-temperature RS performance tests indicate a decline in device performance as the temperature increases. The findings presented herein demonstrate that the utilization of MoS2 QDs provides a novel avenue for significantly enhancing the data storage capacity of MoS2-based RRAM devices.

A novel aptasensor has been fabricated based on the resonance energy transform (RET) system from MoS 2 QDs-PATP/PTCA (donor) to NH 2 -UiO-66 (acceptor). The electrochemiluminescence (ECL) signal of PTCA was greatly amplified due to the decoration of MoS 2 QDs-PATP, and the NH 2 -UiO-66 was utilized to label the signal probe DNA (pDNA), which hybridizes with the exposed aptamer anchored on the surface of MoS 2 QDs-PATP/PTCA. With the target acetamiprid, the specific binding of acetamiprid to aptamer causes the connection between the donor and the acceptor to be interrupted and produce an “on” ECL signal. Thus, an “off-on” ECL sensing platform for sensitive and selective acetamiprid assay was designed. Under the optimal condition, the ECL signal of the aptasensor was found to be linearly related to the logarithm of the acetamiprid concentration ranging from 0.1 fM to 0.1 μM with a detection limit of 0.064 fM. More importantly, the recovery rate of the ECL aptasensor was calculated to be 98.7 ~ 106% with a RSD lower 5.1% for the residual acetamiprid assay in real food samples, which indicated that the aptasensor has high potential for practical applications. As a prevalent volatile organic compound (VOC), acetone plays a significant role in diverse domains, such as environmental protection, industrial production, and medical diagnosis. However, if acetone is not adequately monitored and disposed of, it can result in immeasurable adverse effects on human health and the natural environment. Therefore, it is essential to realize the highly sensitive, convenient, and efficient real-time detection of acetone. In this study, MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) were modified on flower-like WO3 nanorod structure through the hydrothermal approach to fabricate a WO3/MoS2 sensor. The sensing performance of the sensor for acetone was investigated. The results showed that the sensor had a response value of 14.96 for 30 ppm of acetone gas at optimum operating temperature (132 °C), which was 3.2 times the performance of a pure WO3 gas sensor. The response of the WO3/MoS2 sensor was reduced by only 20% under a relative humidity of 85%. Besides, the sensor still maintained a high response (11.25 for 30 ppm) under high curvature conditions (120°). Finally, the sensitization effects of MoS2 QDs, including the formation of n-n heterojunction with WO3 and the catalytic overflow of oxygen species, were discussed in detail. This study provides a valuable reference for the construction of low-temperature and high-performance gas sensors based on QD-sensitized metal oxide nanomaterials.

Transition metal ions, such as those generated through MoS2 material, possess an intrinsic fluorescence quenching property towards organic dye molecules; thus, they can be used to construct biosensors as quenchers. However, we found that the conventional bulk MoS2 blocks the view of fluorescence imaging, and is incapable of tracing and visualizing mucin 1-overexpression cancer cells. Herein, a FAM fluorophore-labeled ssDNA fluorescent probe (P0-FAM) stacked on the surface of MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) was used to construct a MoS2 QDs–P0-FAM biosensor. MoS2 QDs exhibit a high fluorescence quenching ability towards fluorescent dyes, possess large specific surface area and a large number of active sites to adsorb and quench more fluorescent probes, promoting sensitivity between quenching and the recovery signal. In addition, the lighter color of unstack-MoS2 QDs is beneficial to define the location of cancer cells compared to MoS2 nanosheets. The novel MoS2 QDs-based biosensor demonstrates high sensitivity to MUC1 with a detection limit of 0.5 nM, and may become an important tool toward the detection of cancer cells.

Background Early diagnosis of renal cell carcinoma is extremely significant for the effective treatment of kidney cancer. The development of AS1411 aptamer modified Mn-MoS2 QDs provides a promising fluorescence/magnetic resonance (MR) dual-modal imaging probe for the precise diagnosis of renal clear cell carcinoma. Methods In this work, Mn-MoS2 QDs were synthesized through a simple “bottom-up” one-step hydrothermal method. AS1411 aptamer was modified on the Mn-MoS2 QDs to improve the specificity to renal cell carcinoma. The characteristics of Mn-MoS2 QDs were confirmed by transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra, etc. Cellular fluorescence labelling was investigated using the Mn-MoS2 QDs and AS1411-Mn-MoS2 QDs. The T1-weighted MR imaging was assessed by the in vitro MR cell imaging and in vivo MR imaging. Finally, the long-term toxicity of Mn-MoS2 QDs was investigated by the hematology and histological analysis. Results The prepared Mn-MoS2 QDs exhibited excellent aqueous property, intense fluorescence, low toxicity, high quantum yield of 41.45% and high T1 relaxivity of 16.95 mM−1s−1. After conjugated with AS1411 aptamer, the AS1411-Mn-MoS2 QDs could specifically fluorescently label the renal carcinoma cells and present a specific MRI signal enhancement in the tumor region of mice bearing renal carcinoma tumors. Furthermore, Mn-MoS2 QDs revealed low toxicity to the mice via hematology and histological analysis. Conclusion These results demonstrated the potential of AS1411-Mn-MoS2 QD as a novel nanoprobe for targeted MR imaging and fluorescence labelling of renal cell carcinoma.

A novel MoS 2 quantum dots (QDs) decorated g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet/N-doped carbon dots (NCDS) heterojunction photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by thermal polymerization and subsequent solvothermal approach. Under visible light (λ ≥ 420 nm) irradiation, the as-prepared g-C 3 N 4 /NCDS/MoS 2 composite with 3wt% of MoS 2 and 2wt% of NCDS displayed the highest photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity with a corresponding H 2 evolution rate of 212.41μmol g −1 h −1 , which was about 53 times higher than that of g-C 3 N 4 /MoS 2 -3%. Moreover, the g-C 3 N 4 /NCDS/MoS 2 composite exhibited excellent photostability. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of g-C 3 N 4 /NCDS/MoS 2 composite was predominantly attributed to the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction between g-C 3 N 4 and NCDS, which effectively accelerated the transfer and separation of photogenerated charge carriers. Besides, the introduction of noble metal-free MoS 2 co-catalyst further promoted the separation of photogenerated charge carriers and provided more active sites for H 2 evolution reaction. The advantages of superior photocatalytic activity and excellent stability endowed a promising potential for g-C 3 N 4 /NCDS/MoS 2 composite to apply in photocatalytic fields.

Graphene oxide lamellar 2D membranes are widely researched for ion separation and molecular sieving in aqueous solution. Extension of the research of GO-based membranes for organic solvent nanofiltration has drawn much attention but is still in its infancy. The relatively low solvent permeability remains a difficult problem to overcome. Inspired by the shell of the Namib Desert beetle, a heterostructured lamellar membrane was prepared by incorporating MoS 2 quantum dots (MQDs) into the graphene oxide membrane. A dual-functional zone was formed, where hydrophilic areas exhibited excellent absorption performance for polar solvents and hydrophobic regions were propitious to the discharge of polar solvents when incorporating a moderate amount (10%) MQDs, denoted as GM-10 (nonpolar solvents presented the opposite performance). The synergistic effects of the dual-functional zone successfully improved the transport efficiency for various solvents, and the flux of various solvents for GM-10 was over three times higher than that of the pure GO membrane. Simultaneously, the composite biomimetic membrane showed excellent stability. This paper provides a novel strategy for constructing a heterostructured dual-functional zone for 2D lamellar membrane modification without the sacrifice of rejection, revealing the potential for further optimization of separation performance and membrane stability.
