High-capacity and amorphous MoS3 decorated hollow Co9S8 nano-spheres composites for boosted sodium ion storage

Shiyuan Xu,Youpeng Wang,Qiming Li,Jiawen Yan,Hao Huang,Caicai Zhang,Xiaoyu Zhang,Fuyi Jiang,Yanli Zhou

Herein, the high-capacity and amorphous MoS 3 has been employed to decorate the hollow Co 9 S 8 nano-spheres to fabricate the Co 9 S 8 /MoS 3 composites by a three-step synthesis. The chain-like and amorphous MoS 3 can provide a high capacity of 894 mAh g −1 and generate abundant active sites to boost the sodium storage properties of Co 9 S 8 based electrode. The heterogeneous interface between Co 9 S 8 and MoS 3 is conducive to the promotion of charge transfer and Na + diffusion kinetics. Thus, the Co 9 S 8 /MoS 3 as the novel anode materials exerts more outstanding sodium storage properties than pure Co 9 S 8 . At a given current density of 0.5 A g −1 , the Co 9 S 8 /MoS 3 delivers a desired reversible capacity of 621 mAh g −1 for 90 cycles. Even at 2 A g −1 , the Co 9 S 8 /MoS 3 exhibits a stable cyclic performance, the charge specific capacity is about 518 mAh g −1 for 500 cycles. At a high rate of 5 A g −1 , a high capacity of 486 mAh g −1 can be achieved, which is obviously higher than that of pure Co 9 S 8 . The remarkable sodium storage properties of Co 9 S 8 /MoS 3 are mainly resulted from the cooperate effects of amorphous MoS 3 and hollow Co 9 S 8 nano-spheres, which demonstrate the promising application of Co 9 S 8 /MoS 3 in future sodium storage devices.

a-MoS3@CNT nanowire cathode for rechargeable Mg batteries: a pseudocapacitive approach for efficient Mg-storage

Yujie Zhang,Dong Chen,Xue Li,Jingwei Shen,Zhongxue Chen,Shun-an Cao,Ting Li,Fei Xu

Rechargeable Mg batteries are promising candidates for highly safe large-scale energy storage batteries owing to their low-cost and non-dendritic metallic Mg anode. However, exploration of high-performance cathodes remains a great challenge hindering their development. Herein, a new pseudocapacitive Mg-storage nanowire material (a-MoS3@CNT) is constructed with a carbon nanotube (CNT) core and an amorphous MoS3 (a-MoS3) outer layer (15 nm thick). The nanowire cathode exhibits a high reversible capacity of 175 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1, a good rate performance of 50 mA h g−1 at 1000 mA g−1, and an outstanding long-term cyclability over 500 cycles. Further investigation of the mechanism demonstrates that the Mg-storage of a-MoS3@CNT is mainly achieved by the pseudocapacitance of a-MoS3, in which Mg2+ ions show fast solid-state diffusion kinetics. The present results demonstrate a new approach for efficient Mg-storage using pseudocapacitive materials, and the performance and solid-state Mg2+ diffusion kinetics could be optimized by delicate morphology tailoring.

Molybdenum-supported amorphous MoS3 catalyst for efficient hydrogen evolution in solar-water-splitting devices

Bofei Liu,Zhonghua Jin,Lisha Bai,Junhui Liang,Qixing Zhang,Ning Wang,Caichi Liu,Changchun Wei,Ying Zhao,Xiaodan Zhang

We report molybdenum (Mo) metal-supported amorphous molybdenum sulfide (a-MoS3) catalysts with a porous and nanostructure nature, which exhibit excellent catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in wired solar-water-splitting devices. Mo-supported a-MoS3 catalysts were prepared by wet chemically synthesizing a-MoS3 nanoparticles at room-temperature and then loading with Earth-abundant and scalable Mo metals sputtered at low temperature (100 °C). Electrochemical studies and applications in wired photoelectrochemical/photovoltaic (PEC–PV) solar-water-splitting devices reveal that the HER performance of wired PEC–PV solar-water-splitting devices can be efficiently enhanced with the proposed highly conductive Mo-supported a-MoS3 catalysts by enlarging the electrochemically active areas, accelerating the electron transport to active sites, and improving the charge transfer at the catalysts/electrolyte interfaces. The low-temperature preparation of highly active Mo-supported a-MoS3 catalysts paves the way to integrating them into various high-performance PV devices to develop highly efficient, scalable, low-cost, and monolithic PEC–PV solar-water-splitting devices.

Sulfur-rich MoS3 cathode for high-performance room-temperature liquid and solid-state lithium metal batteries

Han-Yu Mao,Ya-Ting Zhang,Zhao-Zhong Wang,Xue Jiang,Mei-Ying Lv,Xuan-Ze Zhu-Ming,Peng Chen,Xue-Ping Gao

Sulfur-based compounds have been considered one of the most attractive cathode materials for next-generation batteries owing to their high energy density and environmental benignity. Among them, metal sulfides like MoS 2 show high conductivity as well as intrinsic catalytic activity , however, the sulfur content and specific capacity are relatively low. In this article, we proposed a sulfur-rich amorphous molybdenum trisulfide‑carbon nanotubes (MoS 3 -CNT) cathode via in situ deposition. Benefiting from the enhanced electrical conductivity and enriched abundant reactive sites, the cathode exhibits impressive performance when assembled as liquid and solid-state lithium metal batteries at room temperature . In liquid lithium metal batteries , optimized MoS 3 -CNT20% cathode exhibits an impressive high specific capacity of 900.7 mAh/g in the first cycle, while the cycling stability is poor (35.4% after 50 cycles) owing to severe shuttle effect . When fabricated with polymer solid-state electrolyte, the cycling stability could be significantly improved to 85.7% after 50 cycles with an initial capacity of 314.2 mAh/g. This study provides a rational strategy for developing high-performance metal sulfide cathodes thus helping sustainable development.

Boosted Photocatalytic Selective Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Diformylfuran in Pure Water over Amorphous MoS3-Modified Zn3In2S6 Nanoflowers

Shuo Yan,Qing-Xu Fan,Jun-Peng Liu,Fen-Lian Wang,Yu-Ji Gao

The selective photocatalytic oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into high-value 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) under green conditions is a promising route toward carbon neutrality. However, achieving high efficiency and selectivity in pure water remains challenging due to limited oxygen solubility and nonselective radical reactions. In this study, a series of amorphous MoS3-modified Zn3In2S6nanoflowers (x%MS/ZIS) with varying MoS3loadings were successfully synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method and served as the photocatalysts for the highly selective oxidation of HMF to DFF. The incorporation of MoS3significantly enhances visible-light absorption, promotes efficient separation of photogenerated carriers, and accelerates surface reaction kinetics. Under visible light irradiation, the optimized 2.4%MS/ZIS catalyst achieves 64.7% HMF conversion and 89.5% DFF selectivity in pure water within 6 h, ~39-fold enhancement in DFF yield compared to pristine Zn3In2S6. Radical scavenging experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analyses suggest that superoxide radicals (·O2−) and photogenerated holes are the main reactive oxygen species governing the selective oxidation, while the absence of ·OH radicals suppresses overoxidation. This study demonstrates a viable and green strategy for the valorization of biomass platform molecules through visible-light-driven photocatalysis in pure water.

Amorphous MoS3-modified porous Co4S3-embedded N,S co-doped carbon polyhedron as new high-capacity and high-rate anode materials for sodium-ion half/full cells

Jiawen Yan,Ke Sang,Xiaohan Jiang,Qiming Li,Fuyi Jiang,Yanli Zhou

In this study, amorphous MoS 3 -modified porous Co 4 S 3 -embedded N,S co-doped carbon polyhedron (Co 4 S 3 @NSC/MoS 3 ) was rationally prepared via a multi-step method. One-dimensional linear-like MoS 3 with a high specific capacity of 894 mAh g −1 and abundant active sites compensated for the low capacity of Co 4 S 3 , thus enhancing the sodium ion storage capacity of the entire electrode. Moreover, three-dimensional N,S co-doped carbon networks (NSC) significantly inhibited large volumetric fluctuations in Co 4 S 3 and MoS 3 , thereby sustaining the structural stability and enhancing the electron transfer efficiency. As a new anode material for sodium-ion half batteries, the constructed Co 4 S 3 @NSC/MoS 3 with rapid Na + diffusion and charge transfer kinetics demonstrated better sodium storage properties than Co 4 S 3 @NSC. At a rate of 0.5 A g −1 over 100 cycles, the reversible specific capacity of Co 4 S 3 @NSC/MoS 3 reached 594 mAh g −1 . Even when cycled at a rate of 2 A g −1 for 600 cycles, the charge capacity was stable at 435 mAh g −1 . The rate performance of Co 4 S 3 @NSC/MoS 3 was also found to be remarkable; when the rate increased to 10 A g −1 , the average capacity was retained at 382 mAh g −1 . Apart from half cells, reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-modified Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 composite (Na 3 V 2 (PO 4 ) 3 @rGO) was used as the cathode material to match with Co 4 S 3 @NSC/MoS 3 . The assembled full batteries were analyzed and their electrochemical properties were discussed. They also exhibited outstanding rate capability and high-rate long-life cyclic property. Even at 1 A g −1 over 500 cycles, the discharge capacity was stably maintained at 246 mAh g −1 . The outstanding sodium storage properties of Co 4 S 3 @NSC/MoS 3 mainly depended on the cooperative effects of MoS 3 and Co 4 S 3 @NSC, indicating the potential application of Co 4 S 3 @NSC/MoS 3 in energy storage fields.
