Mg-Al layered double hydroxides with MoS 4 2- intercalated and magnetic modification by Fe 3 O 4 (M−MoS 4 −LDH) was synthesized by one-pot method for capturing and separating heavy metals (Cu 2+ /Pb 2+ /Zn 2+ /Ni 2+ ) from soil. The intercalation of MoS 4 2- considerably improved the removal efficiency of heavy metals, and magnetic materials facilitated the separation of heavy metals from the soil to overcome the potential risk of the absorbed heavy metals. Removal kinetics of heavy metals were found to better follow the intraparticle diffusion model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption results of Cu 2+ and Pb 2+ were better described by the Freundlich isotherm, and Langmuir isotherm model well fitted the Zn 2+ and Ni 2+ adsorption data. Additionally, adsorption mechanism of M−MoS 4 −LDH for Cu 2+ /Pb 2+ /Zn 2+ /Ni 2+ with different concentrations was also be explored. As the concentration of Cu 2+ /Pb 2+ /Zn 2+ /Ni 2+ in soil was small, MoS 4 2- preferentially combined with heavy metals, and heavy metals were immobilized in the interlayer of LDHs layer. With the increase of heavy metals, the precipitation for Cu 2+ /Pb 2+ and the isomorphic substitution for Zn 2+ /Ni 2+ were investigated and proposed. The co-existing ions experiments demonstrated that M−MoS 4 −LDH has high selective adsorption efficiency for heavy metals, column leaching experiments indicated that the heavy metals eventually immobilized by M−MoS 4 −LDH and prevented further migration in soil. Regeneration and recovery experiments suggested that M−MoS 4 −LDH could be reused for several time with high-efficiency and avoiding secondary contamination. This work provided an excellent removal and convenient recovery strategy for the treatment of heavy metal contaminated soil.

Mg Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) intercalated by Mo 3 S 13 2− and MoS 4 2− (Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs) were prepared through the ion exchange method and compared their removing ability of Cu(II), Pb(II) from wastewater. When the batch experiment conducted at dosage 0.3 g/L, pH neutral, contact time 360 min, concentration 6 mmol/L and temperature 298 K, the adsorption capacity of Cu(II)/Pb(II) onto Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs and MoS 4 -LDHs was 2.76, 4.85 and 2.15, 4.66 mmol/g, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs showed a higher adsorption capacity, which was because the larger amount of adsorption sites on Mo 3 S 13 2− . In mixed systems, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs exhibited the preferential selectivity of Pb(II). When Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs/MoS 4 -LDHs adsorbed the low concentrations of Cu(II)/Pb(II), Mo 3 S 13 2− /MoS 4 2− first captured heavy metals and fixed into the interlayer. With the increase of concentration, Cu(II)/Pb(II) were still captured by the interlayered Mo 3 S 13 2− unlike MoS 4 -LDHs that hydroxyl groups onto LDHs began to capture Cu(II)/Pb(II). In the dynamic adsorption experiment, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs could treat a larger volume of sewage than MoS 4 -LDHs. Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs exhibited better selectivity for Cu(II)/Pb(II) under the interference of organic and other metal ions in wastewater, and heavy metals after the treatment by Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs were more stable in the environment. Therefore, Mo 3 S 13 -LDHs could be considered as an environmentally stable adsorbent to remove heavy metals from wastewater compared to MoS 4 -LDHs.

Increasing exposure to heavy metals has stimulated extensive research for designing adsorbents with collective features of high removal efficiency and strong binding affinity to target ions as well as simple and facile separation. Herein, NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheets have been homogeneously immobilized on a carbon foam (CF) substrate, followed by subsequent intercalation of MoS42− ions into the interlayers, giving rise to a hierarchical porous hybrid monolith (abbreviated as NiFe–MoS42−-LDH/CF). By virtue of abundant binding sites, strong affinity and excellent pore accessibility, the developed NiFe–MoS42−-LDH/CF hybrid monolith is found to be highly effective for the sequestration of Hg2+, Pb2+, and Cu2+, exhibiting ultrahigh sorption capacities of 462, 299, and 128 mg g−1, respectively, and outperforms most of the reported sorbents. Meanwhile, the uptake kinetics of these metal ions are extremely fast, as reflected by >99% removal rates within 5 min. More significantly, the developed adsorbent possesses superior selectivity for the target heavy metals with high distribution coefficients in the presence of various interfering ions. Remarkably, the resulting NiFe–MoS42−-LDH/CF hybrid monolith can be utilized as a flow-through filter unit and continuously treat larger volumes of simulated wastewater to below the permitted level for drinking water as compared to a NiFe–MoS42−-LDH powder under identical dynamic conditions, highlighting its feasibility for practical water purification.

Deep separation of low concentrations of molybdenum from tungstate solution has been a technical bottleneck in tungsten metallurgy and subsequent value-added utilization of tungsten products. A feasible strategy, named microbubble floating-extraction, was proposed and employed to achieve the high-efficiency and deep separation of molybdenum from tungstate solutions in this work. It was demonstrated that reagent mineralization is crucial for the formation of MoS42––N263 hydrophobic complexes, which is the rate-determining step of microbubble floating-extraction. Owing to the higher bubble and interface mass transfer rates, microbubble floating-extraction can achieve high-efficiency enrichment and deep separation of MoS42––N263 complexes with a large aqueous-to-oil phase ratio. The separation mechanisms of microbubble floating-extraction include the attachment process of MoS42––N263 hydrophobic complexes on the surface of rising microbubbles and the mass transfer process at the oil–water interface. Compared with solvent extraction, the flotation efficiency of molybdenum increases from 98.61 to 99.14%, while the loss rate of tungsten decreases from 3.31 to 2.12% under the optimal conditions. The microbubble floating-extraction exhibits significant advantages of high separation efficiency, a high enrichment coefficient, and low consumption of organic solvents.
