The incidence of infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria has been one of the most serious health threats in the past and is substantially increasing in an alarming rate. Therefore, the development of new antimicrobial agents to combat bacterial resistance effectively is urgent. This study focused on the design and synthesis of 40 novel tetrahydrobenzothiophene amide/sulfonamide derivatives and their antibacterial activities were evaluated. Compounds 2p , 6p , and 6 s exhibited significant inhibitory effects on the growth of bacteria. To assess their safety, the cytotoxicity of the compounds was assessed using human normal liver cells, revealing that compound 6p has lower cytotoxicity. A mouse wound healing experiment demonstrated that compound 6p effectively improved wound infection induced by trauma and accelerated the healing process. Compound 6p holds promise as a potential therapeutic agent for combating bacterial infections.

Throughout the in vitro studies of membrane proteins (MPs), proper detergents are essential for the preparation of stable aqueous samples. To date, universally applicable detergents have not yet been reported to accommodate the distinct requirements for the highly diversified MPs and at the different stages of MP manipulation. Detergent exchange often has to be performed. We report herein the catalytically cleavable detergents (CatCDs) that can be efficiently removed to facilitate a complete exchange. To this end, functional groups, like propargyl and allyl, are introduced as branched chains or built in the hydrophobic chain close to the hydrophilic head. The representative CatCDs can be used as usual detergents in the extraction and purification of MPs and later be removed upon the addition of catalytic palladium. Mediated by CatCD-1, reconstitution of a transporter protein MsbA into a series of detergents was achieved. The extension of these designs could facilitate the future optimization of other biophysics studies.

Three types of magnetic mesoporous silicas (MMSs), namely, MMCM-41, MMCM-48 and MSBA-15 were prepared by a hydrothermal method using CTAB and P123 as templates. The structure and physicochemical properties of MMSs were characterized by small angle XRD, VSM, ζ potential analyzer, contact angle measurer, and XPS, etc. The potential applications of MMSs in U(VI) recovery were thoroughly investigated. The adsorptive kinetics, thermodynamics, and selectivity of MMCM-41, MMCM-48 and MSBA-15 were compared. The results show that MSBA-15 revealed a high capacity for U(VI) (341.94 mg·g −1 ) and a superior selectivity than MMCM-41 and MMCM-48. The adsorption mechanism was explored by using the relevant adsorption models and XPS. The results indicated that MSBA-15 could be considered a strong candidate for the adsorption and recovery of U(VI) from radioactive wastewater.
