Supercapacitors, an innovative energy storage technology, combine the strengths of batteries and capacitors, enabling diverse applications in sectors such as communications, transportation, and aerospace. Porous carbon materials derived from biomass have excellent electrical conductivity, customizable dimensions, high surface area, and robust electrochemical stability, rendering them ideal candidates for supercapacitor electrodes. This research utilized edamame shells as the carbon precursor and KOH as the activating agent to synthesize a series of N/O co-doped porous carbons (ESC-x-800) through a combined pre-carbonization and activation process. This study thoroughly investigated the effect of KOH addition on the morphology, structure, and electrochemical performance of the materials. The result showed that the ESC-3-800 stood out as the top performer, distinguished by its unique self-doping characteristic with N and O atoms and a unique hierarchical porous structure. The ESC-3-800 boasted an impressive specific surface area of 3188.98 m2 g−1, coupled with a substantial pore volume of 1.86 cm3 g−1. When evaluated in a three-electrode system, ESC-3-800 demonstrated a remarkable specific capacitance of 301 F g−1, and a capacitance retention rate of 73.1% at a high current density of 20 A g−1. In a two-electrode setup, the ESC-3-800 achieved a notable high energy density of 37.6 W h kg−1 (at a power density of 200 W kg−1) in the 1 M Na2SO4 electrolyte. Remarkably, after enduring 12 000 charge–discharge cycles in 6 M KOH, it maintained an impressive 96.68% of its initial capacity (8 A g−1), demonstrating exceptional long-term stability and durability. The straightforward preparation method and outstanding performance of the edamame shell-derived N/O co-doped porous carbon underscore its immense potential for practical applications in supercapacitors.

The preparation of porous carbon is constrained by the extensive use and detrimental impact of activators and dopants. Therefore, developing green and efficient strategies that leverage the intrinsic properties and pretreatment of the materials to achieve self-activation and self-doping is particularly crucial for porous carbon materials. Herein, potassium histidine was utilized as the molecular salt precursor, attaining the efficient and streamlined preparation of porous carbon through a one-step carbonization process that enables self-activation, self-doping, and self-templating. More interestingly, the carbonization temperature significantly impacts the porous structure of the molecular salt precursors, the properties of the heteroatoms, and electrochemical performance. The designed electrodes exhibit high accessibility to electrolyte ions and effective ion-electron transport channels. Therefore, the optimal carbon material (KHis800) has an excellent mass-specific capacitance of 305.2 F g–1 at 0.2 A g–1, and a high capacitance retention rate of 115.6% (50,000 cycles at 5 A g–1). Notably, KHis800 also shows a maximum energy density of 19.6 Wh kg–1. This research is dedicated to exploring a more efficient preparation method for porous carbon material via molecular salts, offering insights for the sustainable development of carbon materials.

The chloroxylenol (PCMX) has shown well virucidal efficacy against COVID-19, but the large-scale utilization of which will undoubtedly pose extra environmental threaten. In the present study, the recycled industrial phenylenediamine residue was used and an integrated strategy of “carbonization-casting-activation” using super low-dose of activator and templates was established to achieve in-situ N/O co-doping and facile synthesis of a kind of hierarchical hyperporous carbons (HHPC). The sample of HHPC-1.25–0.5 obtained with activator and template to residue of 1.25 and 0.5 respectively shows super-high specific surface area of 3602 m 2 /g and volume of 2.81 cm 3 /g and demonstrates remarkable adsorption capacity of 1475 mg/g for PCMX in batch and of 1148 mg/g in dynamic column adsorption test. In addition, the HHPC-1.25–0.5 exhibits excellent reusability and tolerance for PCMX adsorption under various ionic backgrounds and real water matrix conditions. The combined physio-chemistry characterization, kinetic study and DFT calculation reveal that the enhanced high performances originate from the hierarchical pore structure and strong electrostatic interaction between PCMX and surface rich pyridinic-N and carbonyl groups.

In this study, N/O co-doped cage-type biomass carbon (NOBC) was prepared through a simple and facile hydrothermal reaction and two-step carbonization method. As the anode of a potassium ion battery, NOBC displays a superhigh long-cycling performance and a super high rate performance. NOBC-2 provides an excellent reversible capacity of 251.2 mAh g −1 after 1500 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 , and an excellent performance of 334.6 mAh g −1 at a high current density of 5 A g −1 (after 2000 cycles). The reversible capacity of 124.19 mAh g −1 can be maintained even after 5000 cycles at 10 A g −1 . The excellent performance of NOBC is attributed to the unique hollow cage structure, internal 3D carbon network structure and N/O co-doping. Based on the results of detailed fundamental analysis, the pseudo-capacitance mechanism contributes to the higher K ion storage process in NOBC-2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations further show that N/O double doping can promote the adsorption of K ions in biomass carbon materials and improve the conductivity of the materials. The simple synthesis route and excellent electrochemical performance provide new insights for the search for novel carbon-based K storage anode materials with high energy and long cycle life.

Zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitors (ZHSCs) are emerging for high-efficiency energy storage. However, single-layer cathode materials often suffer from low-charge storage kinetics. Herein, an innovative gradient porous carbon superstructure with enhanced charge storage kinetics is developed, achieved by designing a concentration gradient carbon superstructure to facilitate rapid, directional ion transport and efficient ion storage. The gradient pore design with optimized micropore sizes (0.88 to 0.96 nm) and mesopore size (≈4 nm) enhances the hydrated zinc ion ([Zn(H 2 O) 6 ] 2+ ) diffusion, facilitating efficient desolvation and Zn 2+ ion storage. Furthermore, N/O co-doping provides pseudo-capacitance by lowering the energy barrier for C-O-Zn bond formation, increasing the defect density and conductivity of the carbon material. Further graphitization improves conductivity and wettability, while a high specific surface area (SSA) offers abundant active sites. ZHSCs fabricated with this gradient porous carbon superstructure exhibit a remarkably high energy density of 101.8 Wh kg −1 at a substantial power density of 503.6 W kg −1 , outperforming the reported benchmark materials. The exceptional charge–discharge cycling stability is also demonstrated over 10 000 cycles. This work presents an effective strategy for enhancing charge storage kinetics in supercapacitors.

A N/O-codoped carbon-based catalyst (N/O-C-8) designed with dual reaction sites (pyridinic N and carbonyl group) was fabricated in this work, for persulfate based advanced oxidation reaction. The pyridinic N served as the adsorption site for target molecule, via series of high resolution XPS analysis and DFT calculation. Meanwhile, the carbonyl group functioned as the persulfate activation site, to generate oxidative 1 O 2 . Engineering and isolating the two reaction sites on catalyst surface can greatly shorten the migration distance from 1 O 2 to target organic molecule, resulting in good catalytic removal efficiency. As demonstrated, during a 4-hour continuous flow experiment, our catalyst showed stable and efficient removal of tetracycline, with a flow rate of 4 mL/min. The study provides keen insights into the design of effective non-metal based catalysts for practical water remediation.
