One-Step Synthesis of High-Performance N/S Co-Doped Porous Carbon Material for Environmental Remediation

Xiaoyu Huo,Chao Jia,Shanshan Shi,Tao Teng,Shaojie Zhou,Mingda Hua,Xiangdong Zhu,Shicheng Zhang,Qunjie Xu

Potassium thiocyanate (KSCN), a highly efficient “three birds with one stone” activator, might work with inorganic activators to produce excellent N/S co-doped porous carbon (NSC) materials for environmental remediation. However, the effects of inorganic activators on cooperative activation are unclear. As a result, the influence of inorganic activators on the synthesis of NSC materials was investigated further. This study shows that the surface areas of the NSC materials acquired through cooperative activation by potassium salts (KOH or K2CO3) were considerably higher than those acquired through KSCN activation alone (1403 m2/g). Furthermore, KSCN could cooperate with K2CO3to prepare samples with excellent specific surface area (2900 m2/g) or N/S content. The as-prepared NSC materials demonstrated higher adsorption capability for chloramphenicol (833 mg/g) and Pb2+(303 mg/g) (pore fitting, complexation). The research provides critical insights into the one-step synthesis of NSC materials with a vast application potential.Keywords:N/S co-doping;porous carbon;chloramphenicol adsorption;Pb2+removal

Molecular structure regulation of FCCs enabling N/S co-doped hollow amorphous carbon with enlarged interlayer spacing and rich defects for superior potassium storage

Xiaobo Wang,Zhengqiu He,Kaixuan Huo,Jialiang Liu,Qingshan Zhao,Mingbo Wu

Constructing high-performance and low-cost carbon anodes for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) is highly desirable but faces great challenges. In this study, we present a novel approach to fabricating N/S co-doped hollow amorphous carbon (LNSHAC) for superior potassium storage through a template-assisted molecular structure regulation strategy. By tailoring a 3D crosslinked aromatics precursor from fluid catalytic cracking slurry (FCCs), the LNSHAC features a N/S co-doped hollow structure with enlarged interlayer spacing of up to 0.405 nm and rich defects. Such unique microstructure offers fast transport channels for K-ion intercalation/deintercalation and provides more active sites, leading to boosted reaction kinetics and potassium storage capacity. Consequently, the LNSHAC electrode delivers an impressive reversible capacity (466.2 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A/g), excellent rate capability (336.3 mAh g −1 at 2 A/g), and superior cyclic performance (256.9 mAh g −1 after 5000 cycles at 5 A/g with admirable retention of 76.9 %), standing out among the reported carbon-based anodes. When KFeHCF is employed as the cathode, the LNSHAC-based K-ion full cell exhibits a high reversible capacity of 176.6 mAh g −1 at 0.1 A/g and excellent cyclic stability over 200 cycles. This work will inspire the development and application of advanced carbon-based materials for potassium electrochemical energy storage.

Controllable Synthesis of CoS2@N/S-Codoped Porous Carbon Derived from ZIF-67 for as a Highly Efficient Catalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Shi Feng,Xingyue Li,Jia Huo,Qiling Li,Chao Xie,Tingting Liu,Zhigang Liu,Zhenjun Wu,Shuangyin Wang

Graphical Porous carbon electrode : CoS 2 @N/S-codoped porous carbon is prepared through an electrodeposition–ZIF conversion–sulfuration strategy. The loading of active sites can be controlled easily by varying the electrodeposition time. The resulting material can be employed directly as a working electrode for the hydrogen evolution reaction and shows an excellent catalytic activity and stability. A convenient, controllable method to fabricate an electrode is necessary to achieve the practical application of a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst. In this work, an electrodeposition–ZIF conversion–sulfuration strategy is developed to produce a CoS 2 @N/S-codoped porous carbon (CoS 2 @NSC/CFP) to drive the HER efficiently. CoS 2 @NSC/CFP was prepared by the electrodeposition of Co(OH) 2 on a carbon fiber paper followed by conversion into ZIF-67 and subsequent sulfuration with sulfur. The loading of electroactive components can be controlled easily in the range of 0.7–10.0 mg cm −2 by varying electrodeposition time from 5 min to 2 h. The resulting material can be employed directly as a working electrode for the HER and it shows an excellent catalytic activity and stability with an overpotential of 95 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and 158 mV to reach 100 mA cm −2 in an acidic medium. The high efficiency is related intimately to the high dispersion of ultra-small CoS 2 nanoparticles, heteroatom-codoping, and the 3 D porous network configuration of the carbon fiber paper.

Tailored “Staggered Reaction” toward N/S Codoped Hollow Porous Carbon Nanospheres for Supercapacitors

Jiaxue Gao,Hua Lin,Tianwei Wang,Caicheng Song,Rongwen Lu,Shufen Zhang

Nowadays, supercapacitors as energy storage devices have gradually attracted more attention. In this paper, a tailored “staggered reaction” strategy was employed to synthesize the N/S codoped hollow porous carbon nanospheres as an electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors. This manner features the appropriate involvement of the solvent acetone in the reaction within the system, which enables the sequential reaction process to obtain the core–shell structure with different internal and external compositions. Furthermore, the core could be dissolved by soaking in a formic acid solution, thereby achieving a targeted hollow structure. In addition, in situ doping was achieved by selecting suitable precursors (m-phenylenediamine and 2,4-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid) containing N and S, and the effect of N and S content on performance was investigated in detail. The results reveal that with the increase of N and S content, the specific capacitance of carbon nanospheres first increases and then decreases. Ultimately, the maximum specific capacitances of 398 and 277 F·g–1 were obtained under the current density of 0.2 A·g–1 in a three-electrode system and a two-electrode system, respectively. After 10,000 cycles, the specific capacitance can be basically maintained at 100% with excellent cycling stability.

N, S co-doped porous carbon derived from waste medical masks to support LaFexCo1-xO3 as highly effective peroxymonosulfate catalysts for degradation of tetracycline

Li Guo,Siwei Chen,Yue Jiang,Qihan Ding,Yunfei Yang,Jiali Zhi,Youheng Jia,Xiaoli Li

N and S co-doped porous carbon was prepared by decorating the waste disposable medical masks (WDMM) with thioacetamide (TAA) as the N/S source and then carbonizing at high temperature, which was subsequently incorporated Co-doped LaFeO 3 to obtain NSC@LaFe x Co 1-x O 3 catalysts. The resulting catalysts were used to construct an advanced oxidation process (AOP) based on activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade tetracycline (TC) in water. The physicochemical properties of the as-obtained catalysts were characterized and environmental factors affecting the catalytic performances of NSC@LaFe x Co 1-x O 3 /PMS were systematically investigated. The results showed that N and S co-doped porous carbon derived from thioacetamide (TAA)-functionalized WDMM at high temperature could be used as good support for LaFe x Co 1-x O 3 . The synergistic effects between N/S co-doped carbon and polyvalent metals (Co 2+ /Co 3+ and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ ) endowed NSC@LaFe x Co 1-x O 3 with enhanced catalytic performances, in which nearly 100% of TC could be removed by NSC@LaFe 0.95 Co 0.05 O 3 /PMS system within 10 min under the conditions of 0.2 g/L of catalyst dose, 2.5 mmol/L of PMS concentration and 10 mg/L of initial TC concentration. Furthermore, the constructed NSC@LaFe 0.95 Co 0.05 O 3 /PMS system exhibited a wider pH adaptability (3.0 ∼ 10.0), good salt resistance and reusability as well as high mineralization. The mechanisms and possible pathways of TC degradation by NSC@LaFe 0.95 Co 0.05 O 3 /PMS system were proposed and the ecotoxicity of TC and its intermediates was also evaluated. This study demonstrated the feasible transformation of waste masks into porous carbon with high added value for water pollution control and remediation, accomplishing the dual purposes of recycling and resource utilization of waste masks and protecting the environment.

Dual nonradical degradation of acetaminophen by peroxymonosulfate activation with highly reusable and efficient N/S co-doped ordered mesoporous carbon

Ping Sun,Hui Liu,Mingbao Feng,Xuesheng Zhang,Yingsen Fang,Zhicai Zhai,Virender K. Sharma

This work demonstrates for the first time the potential application of a novel nonradical oxidation system consisting of N/S co-doped ordered mesoporous carbon (NS-CMK-3) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The results showed that the NS-CMK-3 catalyst effectively activated PMS to completely degrade pharmaceutical acetaminophen (ACT). The catalytic performance of NS-CMK-3 was ~20 and 10 times better than that of pristine CMK-3 and single N-doped one (N-CMK-3), respectively. The oxidative system could also remove other pollutants (i.e., sulfathiazole, trans -ferulic acid, orange G, and phenol). A higher content of N (5.3 at.%) and a distribution of graphite-N (28.1%) were determined in NS-CMK-3 than in N-CMK-3. The synergistic effect of N/S co-doping (i.e., graphite-N and thiophene-S) resulted in the enhanced catalytic performance. The activation of PMS by NS-CMK-3 primarily followed two nonradical pathways (i.e., singlet oxygen and catalyst surface-bound reactive PMS complexes), supported by quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance measurements. The p -benzoquinone ( p -BQ) and ACTdimer were main degradation products. The removal of total organic carbon (TOC) was ≈27%, suggesting nonradicals could mineralize ACT. The NS-CMK-3 not only demonstrated superior stability owing to a removal efficiency that was still as high as 98% in the fifth recycle run, but also significantly decreased the potential effects of water constituents (e.g., Cl − , NO 3 − , HCO 3 − , and humic acid) on the removal process. The NS-CMK-3/PMS oxidative system offers a novel strategy to carry out environmental remediation via nonradical processes.

Mesoporous Surface-Sulfurized Fe–Co3O4 Nanosheets Integrated with N/S Co-Doped Graphene as a Robust Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution and Reduction Reactions

Lingxue Meng,Yige Wang,Wenwei Liu,Chunlei Fan,Haoxiong Nan,Jiang Wang,Jia Yu

Playing a significant role in electrochemical energy conversion and storage systems, heteroatom-doped transition metal oxides are key materials for oxygen-involving reactions. Herein, mesoporous surface-sulfurized Fe–Co3O4nanosheets integrated with N/S co-doped graphene (Fe–Co3O4–S/NSG) were designed as composite bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Compared with the Co3O4–S/NSG catalyst, it exhibited superior activity in the alkaline electrolytes by delivering an OER overpotential of 289 mV at 10 mA cm−2and an ORR half-wave potential of 0.77 V vs. RHE. Additionally, Fe–Co3O4–S/NSG kept stable at 4.2 mA cm−2for 12 h without significant attenuation to render robust durability. This work not only demonstrates the satisfactory effect of the transition-metal cationic modification represented by iron doping on the electrocatalytic performance of Co3O4, but it also provides a new insight on the design of OER/ORR bifunctional electrocatalysts for efficient energy conversion.Keywords:iron-cobalt bimetallic oxides;surface vulcanisation;N/S co-doped graphene;oxygen evolution reaction;oxygen reduction reaction;bifunctional electrocatalyst

N, S Co-doped carbon-encapsulated CoS(Co9S8) hybrid counter electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells

Zhu Q.,Wei S.,Wang C.,Yang X. B.,Zhou B.,Xie Z. X.,Duan Z. Q.,Hu Y. M.

Unique wool-ball shaped nanocrystalline CoS was synthesized using solvothermal method in which dopamine (DA) was added as carbon source to combine with the CoS. The DA in situ polymerized and coated on the CoS particle surfaces during the solvothermal process. N, S co-doped carbon-encapsulated CoS(Co 9 S 8 ) were achieved after a post carbonization. In the composites, CoS(Co 9 S 8 ) nanocrystals and carbon are tightly bound and embedded into the amorphous carbon layer to form a spherical core–shell structure. Hybrid counter electrodes (CEs) fabricated with the product have good conductivity, dispersion and stability due to the synergetic effect between carbon and nanocrystalline CoS(Co 9 S 8 ). Charge transfer through the CE/electrolyte interfaces is improved by dopamine-carbon combination. In the optimal case, PCE of 8.82% of the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) with the hybrid CEs was achieved, which is close to that of the cell with Pt (8.86%) CE, and is a 41.12% increase compared with that of CoS CE cell with the structure of photoanode/N719/electrolyte (I − /I 3 − )/CE. Moreover, stability of the cells with the composite CEs was greatly improved. The results demonstrate that the as-prepared composites are promising alternatives to Pt-CEs for high-performance DSSCs. The reported preparation method will guide further developments in highly efficient carbon-based catalysts for electrochemistry and energy related applications.

Unveiling the promotion of intermediates transport kinetics on the N/S co-doping 3D structure titanium carbide aerogel for high-performance supercapacitors

Qishan Fu,Muzi Yang,Zhongfei Liu,Hao Yang,Fengquan She,Xiaoqi Zhang,Fangyan Xie,Yuwen Hu,Jian Chen

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (MXene) have shown great advantages as electrode materials in the new generation of energy storage, especially in supercapacitors . However, the inherent low specific capacitance and restacking layers of nanosheets that occur during electrode preparation further reduce the electrochemical performance of the materials. Based on this, we design a N, S co-doping electrode with a three-dimensional (3D) structure, which not only improves the specific capacitance through fundamentally modifying the electronic structure of the electrode materials, but also effectively improves the rate performance of the electrode by preventing the restacking of 2D materials . The N, S co-doping 3D architecture Ti 3 C 2 T x electrode (TC/NS-3D) exhibits an excellent capacitance value of 440 F g −1 at 5 mV s −1 and 64% capacitance retention rate at a high scan rate of 1000 mV s −1 in 3 mol L −1 H 2 SO 4 electrolyte. The TC/NS-3D electrode also shows excellent capacitance retention of 97.2% after the 10,000 cycles stability test. The density functional theory (DFT) analysis reveals the enhanced performance is attributed to accelerated intermediates transport kinetics promoted by 3D structure engineering and N, S co-doping for Ti 3 C 2 T x . This study is promising in designing heteroatomic doping 3D structure MXene-based materials for electrochemical energy storage systems.

Zn/N/S Co-doped hierarchical porous carbon as a high-efficiency oxygen reduction catalyst in Zn–air batteries

Mincong Liu,Jing Zhang,Guohua Ye,Yan Peng,Shiyou Guan

Zn–N–C catalysts have garnered attention as potential electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, their intrinsic limitations, including poor activity and a low density of active sites, continue to hinder their electrocatalytic performance. In this study, we have devised a dual-template strategy for the synthesis of Zn, N, S co-doped nanoporous carbon-based catalysts (Zn–N/S–C(S, Z)) with a substantial specific surface area and a graded pore structure. The introduction of S enhances electron localization around the Zn–Nx active centers, facilitating interactions with oxygen-containing substances. The resulting Zn–N/S–C(S, Z) sample exhibits outstanding performance in an alkaline solution, demonstrating a half-wave potential of 0.89 V. This value surpasses that of commercial Pt/C by 40 mV. Furthermore, when combined with RuO2 (Zn–N/S–C(S, Z) + RuO2), the catalyst demonstrates exceptional performance in a Zn–air battery, offering an open-circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.47 V and a peak power density of 290.8 mW cm−2. This study paves the way for the development of highly dispersed and highly active Zn-metal site catalysts, potentially replacing traditional Pt-based catalysts in various electrochemical devices.

MnO2 Synergized with N/S Codoped Graphene as a Flexible Cathode Efficient Electrocatalyst for Advanced Honeycomb-Shaped Stretchable Aluminum–Air Batteries

Ziyi Shui,Xiangbiao Liao,Yuan Lei,Jia Ni,Yilun Liu,Yong Dan,Wei Zhao,Xi Chen

Aluminum–air batteries possess high theoretical specific capacities and energy densities. However, the desired application performance in the field of flexible electronics is limited by the rigid battery structure and slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). To address these issues, flexible, stretchable, and customizable aluminum–air batteries with a reference to honeycomb shape are composed of multilayer single battery units to achieve large scalability and start–stop control. The single aluminum–air battery combines MnO2 with N/S codoped graphene to improve the electrocatalytic activity. Benefiting from an efficient electrocatalyst and reasonable structural design, the single aluminum–air battery exhibits excellent electrochemical characteristics under deformation conditions with a high specific capacity and energy density (1203.2 mAh g–1 Al and 1630.1 mWh g–1 Al). Furthermore, the obtained honeycomb-shaped stretchable aluminum–air batteries maintain a stable output voltage over the 2500% stretching. More interestingly, the stretchable honeycomb structure not only can solve the start–stop control problem but also has the potential to reduce the self-corrosion in disposable metal–air batteries. In addition, owing to the customizable shapes and sizes, the honeycomb-shaped stretchable aluminum–air batteries facilitate the integrated application of flexible batteries in wearables.
