A water-soluble two-photon fluorescent probe for rapid and reversible monitoring of redox state

Shan He,Wen-Le Fang,Xiao-Feng Guo,Hong Wang

Redox homeostasis is the guarantee for the normal operation of living organisms. Given its importance, monitoring dynamic changes of redox state will facilitate the study of relevant physiological and pathological processes. Herein, a two-photon fluorescent probe NA-Se with selenomorpholine as the response site has been developed for reversible detection of redox state. NA-Se exhibits outstanding analytical performance, including a rapid response to ClO − within 8 s, a detection limit as low as 13.3 nM, and at least 10 redox reversible cycles. Furthermore, NA-Se has improved water solubility and extremely low cytotoxicity, making it ideal for bioimaging. Finally, NA-Se has been successfully applied to monitor the ClO − /GSH redox cycle in living cells and zebrafish. This work may provide an effective tool for studying redox state and related diseases in vivo.

Boron and defects co-doped MXene enables high-performance Na-Se batteries

Wei Lu,Hongpo Liu,Shiquan Li,Jianhua Zhu,Yunfeng Chao,Zhuosen Wang,Yapeng Tian,Xinwei Cui

Sodium selenium (Na-Se) batteries are considered promising candidates for next-generation energy storage devices due to their high volumetric energy density. However, the Se cathode still faces the problems of the shuttling effect and sluggish selenium reduction kinetics. Improving the surface adsorption and catalytic process of selenium cathode can greatly solve the above issues and achieve excellent performance to enhance the application of Na-Se batteries. Herein, experimental and theoretical simulation results indicate that the boron and defects co-doped MXene (BD-MXene) could initiate the redistribution of electrons and improve the surface polarity, promoting chemical adsorption, thus effectively suppressing the shuttle effect. More importantly, the BD-MXene can promote the conversion between polyselenide, accelerating the electrochemical reaction kinetics of Sodium polyselenide. As a result, the obtained Se@BD-MXene exhibits a high rate performance of 502 mAh g −1 at 50 A g −1 (calculated based on Se@BD-MXene) and excellent cycling stability with a decay per cycle of 0.001 % over 4500 at 10 A g −1 . This work provides a viable strategy to design Se cathodes for Na-Se batteries with high-rate capability and long-term cycling.

MOF-Derived Hierarchically Porous Carbon with Orthogonal Channels for Advanced Na–Se Batteries

Teng Li,Jiameng Zheng,Jinwei Wu,Zhenrui Li,Anding Xu,Songping Wu,Yurong Yan

Na–Se batteries with high theoretical capacity and rich natural abundance are regarded as desirable substitutes for lithium-ion batteries in the predicament of scarce lithium resources. However, the huge volume expansion of Se and the shuttling effect of polyselenides hinder the development of Na–Se batteries. Herein, the hierarchically porous carbon encapsulated Se (Se/HPC) is successfully prepared by molten Se diffusing into the multi-scaled orthogonal channels of In-MOF derived carbon matrix. The Se/HPC realizes effective nano-confinement of Se phase and accelerates charge transfer during cycling to efficiently buffer the volume expansion of Se, which avoids the shuttling effect and promote electrochemical performance. The Se/HPC achieves admirable electrochemical performance for delivering high capacity of 465 mAh g −1 at a high current density of 50 A g −1 and 533 mAh g −1 after 2800 cycles at 10 A g −1 with 0.003% capacity decay per cycle. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the Se─C bond is thermodynamically and kinetically beneficial for the adsorption/diffusion of Na + . This work can inspire the further exploration of utilizing the intrinsic crystal structure of MOF to construct a hierarchically porous carbon matrix in situ as carrier for the active Se component, and provide inspiration for future construction of higher-performance electrode materials.

Metal-organic complex derived hierarchical porous carbon as host matrix for rechargeable Na-Se batteries

Qiuju Xu,Heng Liu,Wenyan Du,Renming Zhan,Linyu Hu,Shujuan Bao,Chunlong Dai,Feng Liu,Maowen Xu

The low Se loading, volumetric expansion and polyselenide shuttling between cathode and anode are major factors to limit the further development of Na-Se batteries . To overcome above issues, metal-organic complex derived hierarchical porous carbon (HPC) was synthesized as host matrix for Se via a facile synthesis combined with annealing treatment. The unique hollow structure holds numerous micropores and mesopores for Se loading to form Se-HPC composite. The Se-HPC electrode shows outstanding rate capabilities of 330 and 260 mA h g -1 at 1 C and 5 C, respectively. It also exhibits a stable cycling performance for 1000 cycles at 2 C with a small capacity decay rate of 0.04% per cycle. Such good performance demonstrates the viability of Na-Se batteries with high Se loading of 56%, which may be attributed to the unique hollow structure of HPC with Se encapsulated within micropores and mesopores. This attractive structure not only promotes electrolyte infiltration and electron transfer but also provides additional buffer space to buffer volumetric expansion of Se and suppress polyselenides dissolution in carbonate electrolyte during cycling.

Heteroatoms dual-doped hierarchical porous carbon-selenium composite for durable Li–Se and Na–Se batteries

Xiaosen Zhao,Lichang Yin,Tong Zhang,Min Zhang,Zhibo Fang,Chunzhong Wang,Yingjin Wei,Gang Chen,Dong Zhang,Zhenhua Sun,Feng Li

Selenium (Se) is a prospective candidate of cathode material for high-energy batteries . However, the dissolution of high-order lithium selenides and the shuttle effect in electrolytes lead to low Se utilization, inferior capacity and poor cycling performance. Herein, a heteroatoms (N and O) dual-doped hierarchical porous carbon (HDHPC) with interconnected macro/meso/micropores is used to confine Se composite and developed as a cathode material for advanced Li/Na–Se batteries in low-cost carbonate electrolyte. For Li-Se batteries, Se/HDHPC cathode delivers an initial charge capacity of 613 mAh g −1 and maintains stable reversible capacity of 545 mAh g −1 with a capacity decay as low as 0.0074% per cycle after 1500 cycles at a current density of 0.5 C (1 C = 675 mA g −1 ). For Na-Se batteries, Se/HDHPC exhibits a high initial charge capacity of 619 mAh g −1 and retains as high as 402 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at a current rate of 0.5 C. Moreover, Se/HDHPC composite also exhibits an excellent rate performance both in the Li-Se and Na-Se batteries even at a high rate up to 20 C (13.5 A g −1 ). Such excellent electrochemical properties of Se/HDHPC are mainly contributed from two aspects. One is the hierarchical porous structure of the HDHPC, which benefit the penetration of electrolyte and also act as micro reaction chambers to effectively suppress the volume change of the electrode. The other is the strong interaction between lithium/sodium selenide and carbon host induced by heteroatoms (N and O) dual-doping, which can strongly anchor the Se-contained species, thus preventing the side reaction of Se anions with electrolyte.

Three-in-one strategy via anchored MoSe2 for construct stable conversion-type Na-Se batteries: Chemisorption, catalytic conversion and stress dispersion

Rui Wang,Bingxin Sun,Yan Dong,Wang Zhang,Qianhui Wu,Fang Guo,Chunsheng Li,Wenting Li,Ming Chen

Conversion-type selenium cathodes are considered a highly promising alternative to sulfur cathodes due to their high conductivity and similar theoretical capacity. However, stress-diffusion and shuttle effects during the conversion process remain significant challenges that urgently need to be addressed. Herein, a composite matrix of MoSe 2 anchored on the surface of N -doped hollow mesoporous carbon nanospheres (NHMCNS) was designed as a Se host to construct Se/C cathodes (Se/MoSe 2 @NHMCNS). Anchored MoSe 2 successfully mitigated selenium loss by enhancing the chemisorption of polyselenides within the matrix. Meanwhile, polyselenides adsorbed on the Se/C cathode surface exhibit lower diffusion barriers and more negative Gibbs free energy during the conversion from chain polyselenides to Na 2 Se. MoSe 2 accelerated the catalytic conversion of polyselenides to the final discharge products from both kinetic and thermodynamic perspectives. The huge stress induced by structural transformation during the conversion process is mitigated by MoSe 2 synergistic carbon walls, which effectively maintain the structural stability of the cathode. Based on this three-in-one strategy, the sodium-selenium battery assembled with Se/MoSe 2 @NHMCNS exhibits stable cycling performance (400.6 mAh g −1 at 2C after 500 cycles), and the pouch battery also demonstrates good practical performance.
