LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM) is a highly prospective cathode material for high energy density Li-ion batteries (LIBs). Nevertheless, poor cycling performance and rate capability at high cutoff voltages have dramatically blocked its further commercialization. In this study, an ionic conductive interface has been demonstrated to enhance the NCM electrochemical property at the high cutoff voltage of 4.5 V on account of the existence of a Li-ion conductor of Li2SnO3. In comparison to SnO2, Li2SnO3 causes a smoother Li-ion diffusion at the engineered interfaces, lower polarization, slower capacity drop, and voltage fading as well as better H2/H3 reversibility upon cycling. Importantly, it is confirmed that excellent diffusion is beneficial to preservation of reversible phase transition and reduction of polarization, which are directly relative to the superior cyclability and rate capability. This work reveals that building an excellent ionic diffusion interface is feasible for Ni-rich cathodes with simultaneous high capacity and stable cyclability.

The huge amount of degraded NCM (LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2) cathode materials from spent lithium-ion batteries is arising as a serious environmental issue as well as a severe waste of metal resources, and therefore, direct recycling of them toward usable electrode materials again is environmentally and economically more attractive in contrast to present metallurgical treatments. In this work, we design a robust two-step method for direct recycling of degraded NCM materials, which uses the aluminum impurity from the attached current collector to supplement the transition metal vacancies for simultaneous elemental compensation and structural restoration. This single-element compensation strategy leads to the regeneration of high-quality NCM material with depressed cation disordering and stabilized layered structure. Moreover, the regenerated NCM material with controllable Al doping delivered an outstanding electrochemical performance; specifically, the capacity (158.6 mAh g–1), rate capability (91.6 mAh g–1 at 5 C), and cycling stability (89.6% capacity retention after 200 cycles) of the regenerated NCM material are even comparable with those of fresh materials. The as-established regeneration protocol has its chance in simplifying the industrial recycling process of degraded NCM materials.

To date, numerous studies have explored recycling of lithium, nickel, cobalt, and manganese (NCM) from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nevertheless, the leaching and efficient separation of the precious metals from NCM active cathode material via an environmentally benign and economical process is still challenging. Therefore, in this research, we present a novel and energy an efficient route through which to leach valuable metals, for example, lithium (Li), nickel (Ni), cobalt (Co), and manganese (Mn) from the NCM cathode material of the waste LIBs using water-containing waste chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in a batch reactor . Parameters such as temperature, time, liquid-solid, and mass ratios on the extraction efficiencies of Li, Ni, Co, and Mn were carefully examined. The outcomes show that CPVC performed better than PVC for the extraction of valuable metals from NCM material, and this was attributed to its high Cl contents. The maximum extraction efficiencies of Li, Ni, Co, and Mn (99.15%, 98.10%, 99.30%, and 100%, respectively) were achieved under optimized reaction conditions: a temperature of 290 °C, reaction time of 1 h, a liquid-solid ratio 60:1 mL/g and solid to solid mass ratio of 1:3. The apparent activation energies (Ea) for Li, Ni, Co, and Mn were computed to be (24.42, 28.85, 29.67, and 28.79) kJ/mol. The results obtained in this work, indicated that it may contribute to efforts aiming to reduce industrial chemical consumption and increase sustainability in waste management technique.

The instability in the structural integrity caused by interfacial issues is commonly regarded as the primary drawback of Ni-rich layered cathode materials (LiNi x Co y Mn 1-x-y O 2 , where x ≥ 0.8), which must be addressed before their commercial application. Herein, a novel multiple-function surface modification strategy is proposed based on the single crystal structure to in-situ achieve the construction of a coating layer and surface doping with Ce element to enhance the structural stability of the LiNi 0.88 Co 0.09 Mn 0.03 O 2 (NCM). Notably, the introduction of Ce-O bonding adjusts the local oxygen coordination to achieve a more stabilized structure of the oxygen framework, which inhibits the evolution of lattice oxygen and enhances conductivity. Additionally, by benefiting from the in-situ synthesized coating layer of Li x CeO 2 , the occurrence of side reactions on the surface is effectively alleviated, resulting in a reduction in electrode polarization. Combined with comprehensive electrochemical tests, it is confirmed that the improved electrochemical performance originates from the reduction of the detrimental H2-H3 phase transition and enhanced conductivity. As expected, the modified material with 1 wt% content of Ce (NCM@Ce) exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 196.3 mAh g −1 with a capacity retention of 79.7 % after 200 cycles, and its energy density reaches 574.3 Wh kg −1 after 200 cycles.

The recovery of lithium from spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is an important approach to solve the global shortage of lithium resource. Considering the difference in stability of various metal element chlorides in Ni-Co-Mn ternary (NCM) cathode materials, lithium element was selectively and high-efficiently extracted from spent ternary NCM cathode material by ammonium chloride roasting in oxygen atmosphere followed by water leaching. The effects of roasting temperature, roasting time, and NH 4 Cl dosage on lithium leaching efficiency and selectivity were systematically investigated. In addition, the conversion mechanism during chloride roasting was discussed in detail in conjunction with thermodynamic analysis as well as structural and compositional characterizations. After roasting with NH 4 Cl in oxygen atmosphere at 600°C, the spent NCM cathode material was thoroughly decomposed and converted into mixture of LiCl, NiO, and MnCo 2 O 4 . Due to the high aqueous solubility of LiCl, more than 95 % of the lithium in the mixture was leached in ∼30 minutes at room temperature, and Li 2 CO 3 with a purity of 99.40 % can be obtained in the subsequent recovery process. This simple and efficient method can be generally useful for the recovery of a wide range of spent cathode materials and provide inspiration for the lithium recovery process of spent LIBs.

The recycling of cathode materials for spent NCM has always been a major concern for the energy industry. However, among the current processing methods, the general leaching efficiency of Li is between 85% and 93%, with much room for improvement. The recovery of Ni, Co and Mn requires a high cost of secondary purification. In this study, to recycle the NCM cathode material, a route of sulphated reduction roasting – selective Li water leaching – efficiency acid leaching of Ni, Co, Mn – extraction separation – crystallisation was adopted. The results showed that after roasting (a temperature of 800 °C, a reaction time of 90 min, a carbon content of 26%, and a sulphuric acid addition of nH2SO4:nLi = 0.85), Li water leaching efficiency was 98.6%, followed by acid leaching of Ni, Co and Mn at around 99%. Mn, Co were extracted with Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid and 2-Ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl ester respectively to obtain Ni, Co, Mn solutions, which eventually were crystallized for manganese sulphate, cobalt sulphate, lithium carbonate and nickel sulphate products, with high purity of 99.40%, 98.95%, 99.10%, and 99.95%. The results of this study improved the leaching efficiency of Li and were closely linked to the actual industrial preparation of Ni, Co and Mn sulphates, providing a feasible and promising basis for spent NCM cathode materials industrial recovery.

Reducing the lithium residues on the surface of LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 (NCM) cathode is one of the most main challenges in Li-ion battery research. To address this task, a surface coating of Prussian blue (PB) of metal-organic framework is applied to NCM cathode to solve this intractable problem via a simple dry-coating method. The transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results show that the uniform smooth coating can provide a protective shell to block H 2 O and CO 2 absorption from the air, suppressing lithium residues formed on the surface. The color change experiment between PB and Li residuals illustrates PB can react directly with surface residual lithium species. As a result, the amount of residual lithium, such as LiOH and Li 2 CO 3 , is significantly reduced. The 0.5 wt% PB-modified NCM delivers a high discharge capacity retention of 81% after 500 cycles at 1 C discharge rate and exhibits a superior storage property after storing in air for 14 days. Furthermore, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirms that the PB-NCM could hinder the impedance increase during cycling. These results clearly indicate that the PB coating layer contributes to the reduction of lithium residues and the creation of thinner cathode-electrolyte interface, improving structural stability and cycling performance of NCM.
