Nickel-rich layered oxide cathodes, such as LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523), are prevalent in high-power batteries owing to their high energy density. However, these cathodes suffer from undesirable side reactions occurring at the cathode/liquid electrolyte interface, leading to inferior interface stability and poor cycle life. To address these issues, herein, an amphiphilic diblock copolymer poly(dimethylsiloxane)-block-poly(acrylic acid) (PDMS-b-PAA) along with lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) is utilized for modifying the electrode surface. This modification causes a thin and stable cathode–electrolyte interface (CEI) on the surface of NCM523 particles, as evidenced by XPS, TEM, and EIS analysis. The introduction of this modified interface successfully suppresses the capacity fading of NCM523. After 200 cycles at a rate of 1.0 C, the capacity of the modified NCM523 cathode is 108.7 mAh g–1, with a capacity retention of 82.8%, while the control samples without the polymer modification display a capacity retention of 72.7%. These results outline the distinct advantage of electrode surface modification with diblock copolymers/LiTFSI for the stabilization of Ni-rich layered oxide cathodes.

An antimony doped tin oxide (ATO) coating is formed to improve the structural stability, electrochemical performance and thermal stability of LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 (NCM523) cathode materials . It was observed that the 0.5 wt.% ATO-coated NCM523 cathode exhibited a capacity retention of 80.0% after 50 cycles at 1 C between 2.5 and 4.5 V, while that of the pristine one was only 70.4%. The rate capability of the coated cathode was also better than that of the pristine NCM523 in a voltage range of 2.8–4.5 V at various C-rates. The capacity retention was about 11.5% higher than that of the pristine NCM523, when the current rate is set as 5 C. Results indicate that the ATO coating is a promising approach for improving the electrochemical performance of NCM523 cathode materials.

Increasing working voltage is a promising way to increase the energy density of lithium-ion batteries. Cycling and rate performance deteriorated due to excessive electrolyte decomposition and uncontrolled formation of a cathode–electrolyte interface (CEI) layer at a high voltage. A new concept is proposed to construct a high-voltage-stable electrode–electrolyte interface. An elastomeric poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) binder is incorporated into the electrode to modify the LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM 523) particle surface via an in situ cross-linking reaction between hydroxy-terminated PDMS and methyl trimethoxy silane promoted by moisture at ambient conditions (MPDMS). Improved electrochemical performance is achieved with the MPDMS binder in terms of reversible capacity (201 vs 185 mAh·g–1 at 0.2C), capacity retention (80 vs 68%, after 300 cycles at 1C), and rate performance (55.6% increase at 5C), as demonstrated by the NCM 523||Li half-cell. The NCM 523||graphite full-cell also shows improved performance at 4.6 V (147 vs 128 mAh·g–1, 82 vs 76%, after 200 cycles at 1C). The mechanism studies indicate that MPDMS exerts multiple effects, including cathode surface passivation, solvation structure tuning, electrolyte uptake enhancement, and mechanical stress relief. This work provides an inspiring route to realize high-voltage application of lithium-ion battery technology.

A one-step synthesis method is developed to prepare the Li[Ni 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 ]O 2 (NCM 523) cathode with uniform tungsten-coating layer for lithium-ion battery . Such modified material shows similar properties with the bare NCM 523 in terms of the primary particles, secondary structure , and specific capacity. With W coating layer , the NCM 523 gives remarkable improvement in the long-term capacity retention in the half-cell testing, which is sharply inconsistent with the result from the full-battery tests, indicating a contradiction between the half-cell and full-battery tests in some case. After further investigations, such conflict between the half-cell and full-cell tests in evaluating the W-coating strategy is attributed to the dissolution of Li 2 WO 4 layer in the electrolyte, which probably destroys the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the graphite anode and irreversibly consumes the active lithium ions for renovating SEI in full-cell testing. These results will benefit researchers in the area of lithium-ion batteries to fully understand the differences between the half-cell and full-cell testing, and develop the effective strategies for cathode modifications.

LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 (NCM 523) is one of the commercialized NCM cathode materials for lithium ion batteries . In this work, we demonstrate that a 0.5 wt% SiO 2 nanoparticles-coated NCM 523 shows an improved cycling performance and thermal stability, compared with the pure NCM 523. The structural integrity of the NCM 523 during cycling processes can be maintained by the SiO 2 coating layer with a thickness of about 20–30 nm. The 0.5 wt% SiO 2 -coated NCM 523 cathode exhibits a capacity retention of 82.5% over 100 cycles at 0.1 C between 2.5 and 4.3 V, while that of the pristine material is only 68%. Also, the 0.5 wt% SiO 2 -coated sample exhibits a higher reversible capacity (153.4 mAh g −1 ) and better capacity retention (92.4%) over 50 cycles than those of the pure NCM 523 (114.3 mAh g −1 , 66.0%) in the electrolyte with lithium difluoro (oxalato)borate at 1 C in the voltage range of 2.8–4.5 V. The SiO 2 coating layer plays a critical role in improving the electrochemical performance of NCM 523 cathode.

Copper (Cu) doping is recognized as an effective strategy to enhance the electrochemical properties of LiNi1−x−yCoxMnyO2(NCM) cathode materials. However, the influence of Cu2+doping on particle size and grain boundary fusion remains insufficiently explored. A simple microwave-assisted solution combustion synthesis method was used to introduce Cu2+into LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2(NCM523), aiming to regulate particle size and grain boundary fusion. The results demonstrate that increasing the Cu2+doping content promotes particle growth, while an appropriate doping level reduces the degree of grain boundary fusion and cation mixing. Benefiting from these structural improvements, the optimized LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.29Cu0.01O2(Cu–1) cathode exhibits significantly enhanced electrochemical performance, delivering a discharge capacity of 128.6 mAh g−1after 100 cycles at 0.2 C, which is 32 mAh g−1higher than value of the undoped sample (96.6 mAh g−1). These findings underscore that tailored Cu2+doping can effectively optimize the microstructure of NCM523, leading to superior cycling stability, and provide new insights into the design of high-performance NCM cathodes.

Increasing the working voltage of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is an efficient way to increase energy density. However, high voltage triggers excessive electrolyte decomposition at the electrode–electrolyte interfaces, where the electrochemical performance such as cyclic stability and rate capability is seriously deteriorated. A new synergistic positive and passive approach is proposed in this work to construct a stable electrode–electrolyte interface at high voltage. As a positive approach, inorganic lithium sulfide salt (Li2S) is used as an electrolyte additive to build a stable cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) at the LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) cathode surface. In a passive way, acetonitrile (AN) is applied as a solvent additive to suppress oxidative decomposition of a carbonate electrolyte via preferential solvation with a lithium ion. Because of the synergistic interaction between the positive and passive approaches, the cyclic stabilities of NCM523/Li cells improved with a tiny amount of Li2S (0.01 mg mL–1) and AN (0.5 vol %). The capacity retention increased to 80.74% after 200 cycles compared to the cells with the blank electrolyte (67.98%) and AN-containing electrolyte (75.8%). What is more, the capacity retention of the NCM523/graphite full cell is increased from 65 to 81% with the addition of the same amount of Li2S and AN after 180 cycles. The mechanism is revealed on the basis of the theoretical calculations and various characterizations. The products derived from the preferential adsorption and oxidation of Li2S on the surface of NCM523 effectively increase the content of inorganic ingredients. However, the presence of AN prevents oxidation of the solvent. This study provides new principle guiding studies on a high-voltage lithium-ion battery with excellent electrochemical performance.
