Aluminium (Al) powder is the most common solid fuel component in metastable intermolecular composites (MICs). It is used in the field of propellants to provide energy for the flight of rockets and missiles. However, the passivation layer overlaying its surface hinders its energy release. Using fluorine (F)-containing oxidisers may etch the passivation layer, enabling Al to achieve a more direct redox process and improving its energy-release capacity. Herein, NH 4 CuF 3 , which has nano-network structure, was synthesised through the solvo-thermal method, and n-Al was filled into the nano-pore channels using a simple ultrasonic mixing method to form a new n-Al/NH 4 CuF 3 MICs with excellent dispersion and interfacial contact. The thermal decomposition process of NH 4 CuF 3 was investigated, and the results showed that NH 4 CuF 3 could release hydrogen fluoride (HF) and ammonia (NH 3 ) gaseous products. The passivation layer on the surface of the Al powder was etched by HF, and the abundance of gaseous products during the reaction of n-Al/NH 4 CuF 3 Extended the combustion region. This can enhance air capture in the reaction system, minimise reaction sintering and aid in performing external work. Furthermore, n-Al/NH 4 CuF 3 exhibits a lower onset reaction temperature, shorter ignition delay time and greater external work ability than n-Al/CuF 2 and n-Al/CuO.
In this work, NH 4 CuF 3 is utilized as the metal fluorine source and P(VDF-HFP) as the organic fluorine source to fabricate the Al-NH 4 CuF 3 @P(VDF-HFP) ternary energetic thin film via electrospinning technology. The continuous encapsulation of the components Al and NH 4 CuF 3 by P(VDF-HFP) endows the Al-NH 4 CuF 3 @P(VDF-HFP) composite with excellent hydrophobic properties and acid-alkali corrosion resistance, providing Al and NH 4 CuF 3 with anti-aging performance and stability in extreme environments. Additionally, the reaction performance of the Al-NH 4 CuF 3 @P(VDF-HFP) ternary reaction system is analyzed. The results indicate that the Al-NH 4 CuF 3 @P(VDF-HFP) ternary reaction system combines the performance advantages of both the Al-NH 4 CuF 3 and Al-P(VDF-HFP) binary reaction systems, namely low-temperature reaction and a high reaction rate. It is confirmed that the application of the double-F strategy can obtain an Al-NH 4 CuF 3 @P(VDF-HFP) combustion system with a high reaction rate, high ignition sensitivity, and high combustion efficiency. The combustion mechanism of composites is revealed by the analysis of gaseous and condensed products and performance analysis of reaction process. The aim of this study is to integrate the advantages of metal fluorine and organic fluorine to enhance the reaction properties of Al-based energetic composites.
