Recently, lanthanide-doped halide perovskites have attracted increasing attention due to their unique optical properties, such as upconversion (UC) and near-infrared (NIR) emission. However, these emitters suffer from low efficiency, limiting further practical applications. Herein, a Bi 3+ -alloyed double perovskite, Cs 2 NaEr 0.5 Bi 0.5 Cl 6 , with strong NIR-triggered UC and NIR-II (1000–1700 nm) emission is reported. Cs 2 NaEr 0.5 Bi 0.5 Cl 6 exhibits efficient green UC emission with a high quantum yield up to 2.1% and NIR-II emission peaking at 1541 nm with a quantum yield of 37.9% under 980 nm excitation. The strong UC emission is related with the efficient energy transfer between Er 3+ and self-trapped exciton states induced by corporation of Bi 3+ ions. In addition, Bi 3+ ions can act as diluters, suppressing the energy loss caused by undesirable successive energy transfer among Er 3+ ions, enhancing the UC and NIR-II emission. Furthermore, a water-resistant Cs 2 NaEr 0.5 Bi 0.5 Cl 6 /polydimethylsiloxane film is prepared. Excitingly, Cs 2 NaEr 0.5 Bi 0.5 Cl 6 not only shows the potential as a UC thermometry with high sensitivity but also exhibits a high signal to noise ratio in NIR imaging.

Cancer which causes high mortality globally threatens public health seriously. There is an urgent need to develop tumor-specific near-infrared (NIR) imaging agents to achieve precise diagnosis and guide effective treatment. In recent years, imaging probes that respond to acidic environments such as endosomes, lysosomes, or acidic tumor microenvironments (TMEs) are being developed. However, because of their nonspecific internalization by both normal and tumor cells, resulting in a poor signal-to-noise ratio in diagnosis, these pH-sensitive probes fail to be applied to in vivo tumor imaging. To address this issue, a cholecystokinin-2 receptor (CCK2R)-targeted TME-sensitive NIR fluorescent probe R2SM was synthesized by coupling pH-sensitive heptamethine cyanine with a CCK2R ligand, minigastrin analogue 11 (MG11) for in vivo imaging, in which MG11 would target overexpressed CCK2Rs in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). Cell uptake assay demonstrated that R2SM exhibited a high affinity for CCK2R, leading to receptor-mediated internalization and making probes finally accumulated in the lysosomes of tumor cells, which suggested in the tumor tissues, the probes were distributed in the extracellular acidic TME and intracellular lysosomes. With a pKa of 6.83, R2SM can be activated at the acidic TME (pH = 6.5–6.8) and lysosomes (pH = 4.5–5.0), exhibiting an apparent pH-dependent behavior and generating more intense fluorescence in these acidic environments. In vivo imaging showed that coupling of MG11 with a pH-sensitive NIR probe facilitated the accumulation of probe and enhanced the fluorescence in CCK2R-overexpressed HT-29 tumor cells. A high signal was observed in the tumor region within 0.5 h postinjection, indicating its potential application in intraoperative imaging. Fluorescence imaging of R2SM exhibited higher tumor-to-liver and tumor-to-kidney ratios (2.1:1 and 2.3:1, respectively), compared separately with the probes that are lipophilic, pH-insensitive, or MG11-free. In vitro and in vivo studies demonstrated that the synergistic effect of tumor targeting with pH sensitivity plays a vital role in the high signal-to-noise ratio of the NIR imaging probe. Moreover, different kinds of tumor-targeting vectors could be conjugated simultaneously with the NIR dye, which would further improve the receptor affinity and targeting efficiency.

Broadband photodetectors (PDs) capable of multi-wavelength detection have garnered significant interest for applications in environmental monitoring, optical communication, spectral analysis, and imaging sensing. Low-bandgap Pb–Sn hybrid perovskite photodetectors can extend the spectral response from the ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) range to the near-infrared (NIR) and reduce the toxicity associated with Pb 2+ . The strategic introduction of Sn 2+ into Cs 0.15 FA 0.85 Pb x Sn 1− x I 3 ( x = 1, 0.8, 0.6, 0.5, 0.4, 0.2, and 0) not only preserves the cubic crystal structure with conformal multigrain growth but also broadens the film's absorption spectrum from 800 to 1000 nm NIR region. This indicates a well-controlled tunability of the Pb–Sn binary perovskite system. Specifically, the self-powered photodetector with a device structure of ITO/NiO x /PTAA/Cs 0.15 FA 0.85 Pb 0.5 Sn 0.5 I 3 /PCBM/BCP/Ag has shown remarkable optoelectrical properties. It exhibits a high external quantum efficiency (EQE) of up to 80% across the spectrum from 300 to 1000 nm, a responsivity ( R ) exceeding 0.5 A/W, and high detectivity ( D *) value of 1.04 × 10 12 Jones at 910 nm and 3.38 × 10 11 Jones at 1000 nm after weak attenuation. Intriguingly, the dark current of the Cs 0.15 FA 0.85 Pb 0.5 Sn 0.5 I 3 device is four orders of magnitude lower than that of devices made with pristine Pb or Sn only, strongly correlating with its significantly increased built-in potential and reduced trap density. Consequently, it demonstrates a −3 dB bandwidth of 2.23 × 10 4 Hz, fast rise and decay times of 61 and 30 μs, respectively, and a linear dynamic range (LDR) of 155 dB. Benefiting from its high sensitivity, a 5 × 5 PD array for NIR imaging and non-invasive pulse detection for photoplethysmography applications has been successfully demonstrated, showcasing the prosperous potential of Pb–Sn hybrid perovskite in the NIR range.
