As the production and consumption of lithium-ion batteries increase, high purity Ni(II) and Co(II) products are becoming increasingly critical as key raw materials for battery cathodes. However, the clean and efficient separation of Ni(II) and Co(II) has been a bottleneck problem since they often coexist in ores and secondary resources and have similar ionic radii, oxidation states, and coordination numbers. Thus, this paper proposes a novel extractant (NNPA) and a breakthrough method to separate Ni(II) and Co(II). The effects of chloride ion concentration , pH value, temperature, O/A ratio and extraction time on extractant selectivity and extraction efficiency were investigated. Under optimum conditions, NNPA demonstrated high extraction ability (E = 94.6 %) and selectivity (β Ni(II)/Co(II) = 481) for Ni(II) at pH 0, whereas at pH 6, it has high extraction ability (E = 93.9 %) and selectivity (β Co(II)/Ni(II) = 510.88) for Co(II). To provide in-depth insights into the Ni(II) and Co(II) separation mechanism, based on the single crystal XRD analyses of the extracted Ni(II) complex and the extracted Co(II) complex, DFT calculations were performed. The results show that the extraction order of NNPA is NNPANiHCl 3 > NNPACoCl 2 > NNPANiCl 2 (H 2 O) 2 . Due to the different selectivity of NNPA towards Ni(II) or Co(II) at different pH values, it is able to greatly reduce the consumption of extractant and significantly shorten the extraction process flow by selectively extracting the low concentration Ni(II) or Co(II) from Ni(II)-Co(II) solutions, thereby improving efficiency, reducing energy consumption and achieving cleaning production.

As the production of electric vehicles and lithium-ion batteries continues to rise, concerns over resource scarcity and supply shortages of critical metals, including Cu, Ni, Co, Mn, and Li, have become increasingly urgent. To address these concerns and promote environmental protection, there is a growing demand for the recycling of hazardous waste containing these critical metals as secondary resources. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel synergistic solvent extraction system of D2EHPA-NNPA, which fills a gap in the lack of a suitable extraction system for the hydrometallurgical industry of secondary resources containing Cu, Ni, Co, Mn, and Li. With the specific extraction sequence of D2EHPA-NNPA, a novel process has been designed and proposed for the stepwise extraction of Cu, Ni, Co, Mn, and Li from secondary resources, which significantly simplifies process flows while avoiding cross-contamination of the extractants and the production of industrial wastewater. Furthermore, the proposed “extraction-scrubbing-stripping” process has been investigated from both macroscopic and microscopic perspectives, demonstrating that the novel synergistic solvent extraction system of D2EHPA-NNPA is a viable option for industrial applications to promote a circular economy and achieve sustainability objectives.

Developing a novel extraction process for battery minerals-nickel laterites is a key aspect of building a resilient and low-carbon future, as the current process produces heavy metal residues, electrolytic wastewater, and toxic gases, while also facing issues of long process flow and low resource utilization. The primary bottlenecks in the process stem from the low separation coefficients and poor selectivity of commercial extractants. In this paper, a novel synergistic solvent extraction (SSX) system, dinonylnaphthalenesulfonic acid (DNNSA)-N,N-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)tetradecan-1-amine (NNPA), has been proposed to address the bottlenecks. Based on the DNNSA-NNPA SSX system, a novel hydrometallurgical process has been proposed for the stepwise extraction of valuable metals from nickel laterites. In the proposed process, Cu, Ni, Co, and Zn were directly extracted from the nickel laterite leachate, reducing their concentrations to below 1 mg/L. The enriched metals were subsequently separated as CuSO4, NiSO4, CoSO4, and ZnSO4 solutions, each with a purity exceeding 99.9%. Thereafter, Cr, Fe(III), and Al were sequentially removed from the raffinate through stepwise precipitation, achieving their preliminary separation. Mn was then selectively extracted from the resulting precipitate–mother liquor, yielding a high-purity MnSO4 solution (>99.9%). This integrated approach enables the comprehensive resource extraction of nickel laterites. Systematic mechanistic studies and pilot plant tests demonstrate that the novel extraction process significantly improves metal ion separation coefficients, avoids coprecipitation losses of Ni and Co, simplifies the process flow, avoids hazardous waste generation, reduces energy consumption, and improves resource utilization.
