Two-dimensional transition metal carbon nitrides (MXenes) are a prominent class of functional materials with significant potential for sensing applications. However, their conventional charge transfer mechanisms pose limitations for detecting nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ). In this study, we successfully design-synthesized potassium titanate (KTO) nanoribbons by oxidizing and alkalizing monolayer Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene, targeting room-temperature NO 2 detection. The Ti 3 C 2 T x -derived KTO exhibited exceptional selectivity for NO 2 , achieving a remarkable response of 649.2 % for 50 ppm NO 2 , which is 550 times higher than that of the Ti 3 C 2 T x sensor (1.18 %). Additionally, the sensor demonstrated a detection limit as low as 5 ppb at room temperature, along with rapid response (1 s) and recovery times (2 s), and excellent linearity. Computational analysis showed that the abundant OH groups on the KTO surface contribute to strong selective adsorption (2.79 |eV|) and efficient electron transfer (0.91 |e|) for NO 2 . The unique proton conduction mechanism of KTO further reduced the activation energy for proton transport, enhancing NO 2 sensing performance. This study highlights the potential of Ti 3 C 2 T x -derived KTO nanomaterials for advanced room-temperature NO 2 detection and sensor technology development.

SnO 2 is an n-type wide band gap (E g = 3.6 eV) metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) that has been widely studied, due to its low cost, non-toxicity and simple preparation process, and it has become the most important sensitive material for the preparation of gas sensors. However, the SnO 2 sensor still has some defects of high operating temperature and low response, which hinders its practical application. In this work, SnO 2 /SnS composites were prepared by hydrothermally growing SnS nanoparticles on the surface of electrospun hollow SnO 2 nanotubes with high porosity. Results show that the SnO 2 /SnS gas sensor based on the heterojunction has a much higher response of 375 to 50 ppm NO at 130 ℃ than that of pure SnO 2 sensor, as well as rapid response/recovery (26 s/90 s), excellent selectivity (12 times that of H 2 S), repeatability and stability (225–250 to 20 ppm NO). Its enhanced sensing property may be attributed to the synergistic effect of the formation of homologous cations heterojunction and unique micro-structure of SnO 2 /SnS composite, which could facilitate efficient charge transfer and provide more active sites (such as vacancy, point defects) for NO adsorption and reaction. This experiment provides a new idea for the development of SnO 2 gas sensors with excellent properties, which can meet the detection of toxic and harmful gas.

The concentration of nitric oxide (NO) in exhaled breath is linked to respiratory diseases, requiring precise detection. Traditional two-dimensional (2D) carbon-based materials used in chemiresistive gas sensors suffer from high detection limits due to a lack of functional sites, while metal oxide sensors are limited by poor selectivity and high operating temperatures, restricting their development. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as an effective material for NO monitoring due to their superior selectivity; however, their inherent insulating properties hinder practical use. In this study, we synthesized Ni, Co-MOF-74-Carbon Nanotube (CNT) heterostructured nanoflowers, leveraging their bimetallic active sites and large specific surface area to enhance NO adsorption. This composite material, integrated with breathable nanofibrous membranes through physical deposition, exhibits high selection to NO, achieving a linear response range of 30 to 1000 ppb at room temperature and a limit of detection (LOD) of 18.6 ppb. This sensor can accurately detect NO levels in the exhaled breath of both healthy and diseased individuals, confirming its potential for respiratory disease diagnosis. Additionally, we developed a portable device integrating the Ni, Co-MOF-74-CNT-polyacrylonitrile (PAN) membrane, a microcontroller unit (MCU), and a Bluetooth module for real-time NO detection. The systematic design and successful validation of this portable gas sensor pave the way for future home-based real-time monitoring of airway inflammation.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a celebrated signaling molecule involved in diverse vital physiological and pathophysiological processes. Thus, rapid detection of NO in situ is quite significant due to its large diffusion and short half-time. Herein, a new water-soluble conjugated polymer (PBFB-PDA-NMe3+) with an o-diaminophenyl group in the side chain is designed and synthesized as a fluorescence probe for ultrarapid and sensitive detection of endogenous NO via photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. In the presence of NO, NO can be specifically trapped by o-diaminophenyl group and react with it to form benzotriazole derivative, which leads to the PET being inhibited. The fluorescence of probe thus significantly turns on. Most importantly, the assay is completed within 1 min without further treatments. Furthermore, this probe can rapidly image intracellular NO in A549 cell and S. aureus bacteria only incubating for 15 min. In addition, this probe is highly selective, which can clearly discriminate NO from other reactive species such as NO3–, NO, H2O2, •OH, GSH, cysteine, and ascorbic acid. Hence, this probe with good water-solubility demonstrates the ultra rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of endogenous NO, which is advantageous to investigate NO-related biological processes.

The self-limiting Cabrera–Mott oxidation reaction on metal surfaces provides an effective pathway for synthesizing atomically thin 2D metal oxide. Inspired by this reaction, it is proposed that solid bismuth metals can react with dissolved oxygen and water molecules in an aqueous environment, forming an ultrathin oxyhydroxide layer on their surfaces. The lattice mismatch between the surface oxyhydroxide layer and the underlying pure metal enables the mechanical exfoliation of detached 2D oxyhydroxide nanosheets. Moreover, the sulfurization interaction between the oxyhydroxide and dissolved H 2 S expands the applicability of solid–liquid interfacial reactions for realizing 2D bismuth oxysulfide, effectively tuning their electronic bandgap energy, work function, and band position. Given its good photoresponse from blue to UV light, the optoelectronic gas sensing performances of bismuth oxysulfide are investigated. Under purple light irradiation, the Bi 2 O 1.12 S 1.88 -based gas sensor exhibits an excellent optoelectronic response factor of 48.5% toward 10 ppb NO 2 , which is the lowest detection limit for reported bismuth compounds-based gas sensor so far. This work provides a novel and facile synthesis approach for 2D metal oxyhydroxide and oxysulfide and simultaneously demonstrates the substantial potential of bismuth oxysulfide in high-performance optoelectronic gas sensing.
