Organic–inorganic metal halides (OIMHs) have various crystal structures and offer excellent semiconducting properties. Here, we report three novel OIMHs, (PPA)6InBr9 (PPA = [C6H5(CH2)3NH3]+), (PBA)2SbBr5, and (PBA)2SbI6 (PBA = [C6H5(CH2)4NH3]+), showing typical zero-dimensional (0D) structure, octahedra dimers, and corner-sharing one-dimensional chains and crystallized in the monoclinic system with P21, P21/c, and C2/c space groups, respectively. (PPA)6InBr9, (PBA)2SbBr5, and (PBA)2SbI6 have experimental optical band gaps of ∼3.16, ∼2.24, and 1.48 eV, respectively. (PPA)6InBr9 exhibits bright-orange light emission centered at 642 nm with a full-width at half-maximum of 179 nm (0.51 eV) and a Stokes shift of 277 nm (1.46 eV). After Sb3+ doping, the peak position did not change, and the photoluminescence quantum yield increased significantly from 9.2 to 53.0%. The efficient emission of Sb:(PPA)6InBr9 stems from the isolated ns2 luminescent center and strong electron–phonon coupling, making the spin-forbidden 3P1–1S0 observable. By combining commercial blue and green phosphors with orange-red-light-emitting (PPA)6In0.99Sb0.01Br9, a white-light-emitting diode was constructed, with the color-rendering index reaching up to 92.3. Our work highlights three novel 0D OIMHs, with chemical doping of Sb3+ shown to significantly enhance the luminescence properties, demonstrating their potential applications in solid-state lighting.

Tunable broad-spectrum luminescent materials covering the ultraviolet (UV), visible, and near infrared (NIR) regions are essential for next-generation optoelectronic technologies. However, conventional systems are often limited by inefficient UV emission and the inability to integrate multiple spectral components within a single material. Here, a design strategy that combines ns 2 -ion with controlled lattice distortion is introduced to overcome these challenges. Using 4,4-difluoropiperidine (DFPD) as the organic cation, a family of hybrid metal halide phosphors, [(DFPD) 2 MCl 4 ·H 2 O, M = Cd/Zn] doped with different ns 2 ion (Sn 2+ , Pb 2+ , Sb 3+ , Bi 3+ , and Te 4+ ) is synthesized. It is revealed that reduced lattice distortion correlates with enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), enabling broadband self-trapped exciton emission spanning the UV–vis–NIR range within a single host matrix. Leveraging the highly efficient UV emission of 2% Pb-doped (DFPD) 2 CdCl 4 ·H 2 O (PLQY: 93%), a high-performance white light emitter with a color rendering index of 92.9 and a correlated color temperature of 6087 K is demonstrated. The materials further exhibit promising functionality in NIR imaging and multi-level anti-counterfeiting. This work elucidates the interplay between lattice distortion and exciton dynamics in Cd/Zn-based hybrid metal halides, providing fundamental insights into their photophysics and establishing a versatile strategy for designing next-generation broadband multifunctional optoelectronic materials.

The dependence of photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) on the crystal structure of existing zero-dimensional ns2 metal halides is analyzed with the help of principal component analysis and random forest methods. The primary role of the distance between metal ions in different compounds is revealed, and the influence of other structural features such as metal-halogen distance and the distortion of metal-halogen polyhedrons are quantified. Accordingly, the two previously unknown Sb3+-based zero-dimensional metal halides were synthesized to verify the obtained model. Experimental studies of the two compounds demonstrated good agreement with the predictions, and the PLQY of (C10H16N)2SbCl5 is found to be 96.5%. Via machine learning analysis, we demonstrate that concentration quenching is the main factor that determines PLQY for all s2 ion metal halides, which will accelerate the discovery of new luminescence metal halides.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection is the most frequent cause of hospitalization in pediatric patients. Current systemic treatment and vaccines are not curative and re-infection is often associated with a more drastic incidence of the disease. Baicalin is a flavonoid isolated from Scutellaria baicalensis with potent anti-viral characteristics, namely against RSV. However, its precise mechanism of action remains unclear. Here, using in vitro methods and an in vivo murine model of RSV infection, we showed that baicalin inhibits RSV replication induces translational upregulation of type I interferons (IFNs), IFN-α and IFN-β, and reverses epithelial thickening in lung tissues. Moreover, baicalin inhibits transcription of the RSV non-structural proteins NS1 and NS2. Molecular docking and surface plasmon resonance-based affinity analysis showed that baicalin also binds to the α3 helix of the NS1 protein with an affinity constant of 1.119 × 10−5 M. Polysome profiling showed that baicalin inhibits translation of the RSV matrix protein (M) RNA. Baicalin mediates increased release of the ribosomal protein L13a from the large ribosomal subunit, where the extra ribosomal subunit L13a inhibits M RNA translation. These results comprehensively establish the multiple mechanisms by which baicalin induces a potent innate immune response against RSV infection.

Low-dimensional metal halides have emerged as promising platforms for the development of new-generation phosphor-converted light emitting diodes (pc-LEDs), in which zero-dimensional (0D) hybrids with lone-pair ns2 states, in particular, show unprecedented competitiveness owing to their fascinating photoluminescence (PL) properties. Herein, we designed a novel 0D indium hybrid, (C20H20P)2InCl5, and proposed a co-doping strategy to incorporate Bi3+ (6s2) and Sb3+ (5s2) ions into this indium hybrid. Widely tunable emissions from blue to red are achieved, which are assigned to the triplet self-trapped excitons (STEs) (3P1 → 1S0) of Bi3+ (476 nm) and Sb3+ (658 nm), respectively. Importantly, an uncommon triplet–triplet energy transfer from Bi3+ to Sb3+ contributes to tunable dual emissions, and enables a single-phase cool white-light emission under ultraviolet (UV) excitation. Moreover, the energy transfer mechanism is discussed clearly by fluorescence photon dynamic analysis and DFT calculations. This work provides a deeper insight into triplet–triplet energy transfer, as well as presents a new model system for tuning the PL behaviours of ns2 configuration dopants.
