O3-type layered oxide cathodes (NaxTMO2) for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have attracted significant attention as one of the most promising potential candidates for practical energy storage applications. The poor Na+ diffusion kinetics is, however, one of the major obstacles to advancing large-scale practical application. Herein, we report bismuth-doped O3-NaNi0.5Mn0.5O2 (NMB) microspheres consisting of unique primary nanoplatelets with the radially oriented {010} active lattice facets. The NMB combines the advantages of the oriented and exposed electrochemical active planes for direct paths of Na+ diffusion, and the thick primary nanoplatelets for less surface parasitic reactions with the electrolyte. Consequently, the NMB cathode exhibits a long-term stability with an excellent capacity retention of 72.5% at 1C after 300 cycles and an enhanced rate capability at a 0.1C to 10C rate (1C = 240 mA g–1). Furthermore, the enhancement is elucidated by the small volume change, thin cathode-electrolyte-interphase (CEI) layer, and rapid Na+ diffusion kinetics. In particular, the radial orientation-based Bi-doping strategy is demonstrated to be effective at boosting electrochemical performance in other layered oxides (such as Bi-doped NaNi0.45Mn0.45Ti0.1O2 and NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2). The results provide a promising strategy of utilizing the advantages of the oriented active facets of primary platelets and secondary particles to develop high-rate layered oxide cathodes for SIBs.

O3-NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 has attracted much attention as a cathode for sodium-ion batteries, because of its low cost and high sodium-ion storage capacity. However, its slow Na+ diffusion kinetics and harmful P3–O3′ phase transition with severe bulk strain at high voltage leads to poor rate capability and fast capacity fading. Herein, we propose a multivariate doping strategy with Cu, Mg, and Ti ions to solve the above problems of the O3-NaNi1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode. The O3–Na(Ni1/3Fe1/3Mn1/3)0.9Cu0.03Mg0.02Ti0.05O2 (NFMCMT) cathode exhibits enlarged Na+ diffusion channels and a strengthened layered structure, which improves the Na+ diffusion kinetics, suppresses the harmful P3–O3′ phase transition at high voltages, and inhibits the intragranular fatigue cracks, leading to enhanced rate capability and cycling performance. As a result, the NFMCMT exhibits outstanding performance in the 2–4.1 V voltage window, delivers a discharge capacity of 151.2 mAh g–1 with the 81.5% capacity retention for 100 cycles at 0.1 C, and 83.1% capacity retention for 300 cycles at 5 C. Especially in the rate performance, the NFMCMT delivers a 115.6 mAh g–1 and 100.1 mAh g–1 discharge capacity even at 5 and 10 C. This work provides an effective multivariate doping strategy for development of high-performance layered oxide cathodes for sodium-ion batteries.

An interlayer-expanded vanadium disulfide (VS 2 ) electrode has been developed to enhance the performance of sodium ion batteries. The interlayer expansion of the (0 0 1) plane from the standard 5.7 Å to 9.5 Å improves capacity by 2–3 times at various current densities even over long cycles. This advancement is credited to the optimized kinetics of Na + diffusion, as the intrinsic structure of VS 2 with weak van der Waals interlayer interactions leads to minimal resistance along 2D ionic diffusion routes. Our findings highlight the significance of interlayer engineering in designing efficient energy storage electrodes.

High theoretical capacity and low discharge platforms of Sn and Sb-based materials are an auspicious anode material for sodium ion batteries. Although, their large volume change before and after sodium insertion during cycling leads to unstable electrode structure and poor cycle performance. In view of the above, a thermo chemical strategy by a simple one-pot for producing 3–6 nm diameter homogeneously dispersed Sn/SnSb nanoparticles on a nitrogen-doped graphene sheet with a large-scale and low-cost feature for high performance sodium ion battery is reported. Highly dispersed nano Sn-SnSb alloy/graphene composite electrode not only had good stress adaptability and good integrity protection to prevent agglomeration and polarization during cycling, and also provided the rapid Na + diffusion and electronic transfer channels, thus showing high rate and ultra-stable cycle performance. The as-prepared electrode could maintain the super stable reversible capacities of 251.8, 146.2 and 60.2 mAh g −1 at 1, 4 and 10 A g −1 over 1000 cycles, respectively.

In this paper, the synthesis of ultrasmall Na 2 FePO 4 F nanoparticles (≈3.8 nm) delicately embedded in porous N-doped carbon nanofibers (denoted as Na 2 FePO 4 F@C) by electrospinning is reported. The as-prepared Na 2 FePO 4 F@C fiber film tightly adherent on aluminum foil features great flexibility and is directly used as binder-free cathode for sodium-ion batteries, exhibiting admirable electrochemical performance with high reversible capacity (117.8 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C), outstanding rate capability (46.4 mAh g −1 at 20 C), and unprecedentedly high cyclic stability (85% capacity retention after 2000 cycles). The reaction kinetics and mechanism are explored by a combination study of cyclic voltammetry, ex situ structure/valence analyses, and first-principles computations, revealing the highly reversible phase transformation of Na 2 Fe II PO 4 F ↔ NaFe III PO 4 F, the facilitated Na + diffusion dynamics with low energy barriers, and the desirable pseudocapacitive behavior for fast charge storage. Pouch-type Na-ion full batteries are also assembled employing the Na 2 FePO 4 F@C nanofibers cathode and the carbon nanofibers anode, demonstrating a promising energy density of 135.8 Wh kg −1 and a high capacity retention of 84.5% over 200 cycles. The distinctive network architecture of ultrafine active materials encapsulated into interlinked carbon nanofibers offers an ideal platform for enhancing the electrochemical reactivity, electronic/ionic transmittability, and structural stability of Na-storage electrodes.

The sodium super ion conductor (NASICON) structure materials are essential for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their robust crystal structure, excellent ionic conductivity, and flexibility to regulate element and valence. However, the poor electronic conductivity and inferior energy density caused by the nature of these materials have always been obstacles to commercialization. Herein, using yeast as a template to derive NASICON structure Na3MnTi(PO4)3 (NMTP) materials (noted as Yeast@NMTP/C) is presented. The Yeast@NMTP/C material retains the microsphere morphology of the yeast template and not only controls the particle size (around 2 μm) to shorten the Na+ diffusion pathways but also improves the electronic conductivity to optimize the electrochemical kinetics. The Yeast@NMTP/C cathode delivers reversible multielectron redox reactions including Ti4+/3+, Mn3+/2+, and Mn4+/3+ and exhibits a high capacity of 108.5 mAh g–1 with a 79.2% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at a 2C rate. The sodium storage mechanism of Yeast@NMTP/C reveals that the addition of Ti4+/3+ redox plays a key role in improving the Na+ diffusion kinetics, and both solid-solution and two-phase reactions take place during the desodiation and sodiation process. Additionally, the high-rate and long-span cycle performance of Yeast@NMTP/C at 10C is ascribed to contribute to pseudocapacitance.

Heterostructured electrodes have gained increasing attentions owing to the synergistic effects from individual building components and the unique interfaces. However, rational design and controllable fabrication of high areal capacity and durable phosphorus-based heterostructure anode for industry remains a critical challenge. Herein, a new red@black phosphorus core–shell heterostructure anchored on three-dimensional N-doped graphene (RP@BP/3DNG) has been prepared via a facile one-step solvothermal strategy. As demonstrated by experimental data and theoretical calculations, RP@BP/3DNG shows a superior high electronic conductivity and an extremely low Na + diffusion barrier due to the build-in filed at the RP@BP heterointerface, thus RP@BP/3DNG delivers an ultra-high areal capacity of 3.46 mAh cm −2 (1440.2 mAh/g at 0.05 A/g), impressive rate performance (521.3 mAh/g at 10.0 A/g) as well as unprecedented capacity retention rate of 89.3% after 1200 cycles at 10.0 A/g when evaluated as an anode for sodium ion batteries (SIBs). Furthermore, the internal electric field at the interfaces of RP@BP leads to the shift of electron cloud from BP to RP, which greatly suppresses the reaction activity of lone-pair electrons of BP atoms, and therefore RP@BP/3DNG shows much enhanced air stability. This work heralds a new insight for designing high-performance and stable P-based anodes for rechargeable batteries.
