Hydrated salts have been considered as a promising phase change material for usage in low-temperature thermal energy storage applications ; however, they suffer from poor thermal reliability, corrosiveness, and inefficient thermal storage. Nanoencapsulation is an effective approach used to improve the thermal energy storage performance and reliability of phase change materials. At present, limited studies have been conducted on the core–shell encapsulation-based hydrated salt core. In this work, an efficient method was developed for the encapsulation of Na 2 HPO 4 ·12H 2 O into the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) nanocapsules . The morphology and core–shell structure of the nanocapsules were investigated using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The chemical composition of the nanocapsules was confirmed by Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The phase change performance of the nanocapsules was studied using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Thermal cycling was adopted to reveal the thermal reliability of the nanocapsules. The corrosiveness of the nanocapsules was also investigated. In addition, the nanocapsules were combined with copper foam to prepare a novel composite phase change material (C-PCM) for efficient thermal energy storage. Results demonstrated that the melting and solidifying latent heat of the nanocapsules were 157.3 and 140.6 kJ/kg, respectively. The encapsulation ratio of the nanocapsules was 64.1 %, and 97.7 % was maintained after 500 thermal cycles. Hydrated salt nanocapsules were virtually non-corrosive to the metal. The latent heat of the composite PCM was calculated to be approximately 72.7 kJ/kg. The thermal conductivity of the composite PCM was about 1.25 W/(m·K), 5.5 times higher than that of the nanocapsules. The heat storage test showed that the time required for the heat storage of the C-PCM was reduced by about 82.8 % compared with that of the pure nanocapsules. This novel nanocapsule has high phase change properties and thermal reliability and exhibits good low-temperature thermal energy storage prospects.

Structures of matrix channels are essential in the thermal performances of form-stable composite phase change material (fs-CPCM). As the special matrix in fs-CPCM, the expanded graphite (EG) has abundant pores and excellent thermal conduction channels, but it shows poor hydrophilia. In this study, the different dimensional NiCo 2 O 4 was selected to regulate controllably the microstructure of EG channels. Three kinds of NiCo 2 O 4 with one dimensional (1D) pine-needle-like, two dimensional (2D) honeycomb-like and three dimensional (3D) flower-like were used to modify EG (N-EG). A series of novel Na 2 CO 3 ·10H 2 O-Na 2 HPO 4 ·12H 2 O eutectic hydrated salt (EHS)/N-EG fs-CPCM with enhanced heat transfer and excellent thermal stability was developed. It was found that the 3D flower-like N-EG fs-CPCM possessed outstanding chemical compatibility, high latent heat (173.21 J/g), enhanced thermal conductivity (5.52 W/m·K), and great thermal reliability (−0.06 wt% weight loss). This work provides new insights that the matrix with 3D pore structures could be applied to encapsulate EHS, which is beneficial to obtain fs-CPCM with superior thermal properties.

In the design of gel phase change composite wall materials for solar greenhouses, the alteration of material composition could directly affect the thermal performance of gel phase change composite wall materials. In order to obtain better suitable gel phasechange composite wall material for solar greenhouses, Na2HPO4·12H2O-based gel phasechange materials with different content of ingredient (Na2SiO3·9H2O, C35H49O29, KCl, and nano-α-Fe2O3) were obtained via the Taguchi method and machine learning algorithms, such as Support Vector Regression (SVR), Random Forest (RF), and Gradient Boosting Trees (GBDT). The result shows that the GBDT is more suitable for the thermal performance optimization prediction of gel phase change composite wall materials, including time cooling (TC), latent heat of phase change (ΔHm), supercooling degree (ΔT), and phase change temperature (Tm). The determination coefficient (R2) of time cooling (TC), latent heat of phase change (ΔHm), supercooling degree (ΔT), and phase change temperature (Tm) by GBDT are 0.9987, 0.99965, 1, and 0.9995, respectively. The mean absolute error (MAE) coefficient percentage of supercooling degree (ΔT), phase change temperature (Tm), latent heat of phase change (ΔHm), and time of cooling (TC) by GBDT are 0.32%, 0.25%, 0.17%, and 0.26%, respectively. The root mean square error (RMSE) of supercooling degree (ΔT), phase change temperature (Tm), latent heat of phase change (ΔHm), and time of cooling (TC) by GBDT are 0.41%, 0.32%, 0.19%, and 0.35%, respectively. The optimal result predicted by GBDT is Na2HPO4·12H2O + 5% Na2SiO3·9H2O + 12% KCl + 0.2% Nano-α-Fe2O3+ 3% C35H49O29, which was verified by experiments.

The content of modified materials in multicomponent gel phase change materials directly affects their performance characteristics. To investigate the influence of different contents of modified materials on the performance features of Na2HPO4·12H2O-based multicomponent Gel Phase Change Materials, four single factors (Na2SiO3·9H2O, C35H49O29, KCl, and nano-α-Fe2O3) and their interactions were selected as influencing factors. Using the Taguchi method with an L27(313) orthogonal array, multi-step melt–blending experiments were conducted to prepare a novel multi-component phase change material. The characteristics of the new multi-component phase change material, including supercooling degree (ΔT), phase change temperature (Tm), latent heat of phase change (ΔHm), and cooling time (CT), were obtained. In addition, characterization techniques such as DSC, SEM, FT-IR, and XRD were employed to analyze its thermal properties, microscopic morphology, chemical stability, and crystal structure. Based on the experimental results, the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) was used to rank the influence of each factor on the quality characteristics, and thep-value from analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to evaluate the significance of each factor on the performance characteristics. Then, the effects of each significant factor on the characteristics of the multiple gel phase change materials were analyzed in detail, and the optimal mixing ratio of the new multiple gel phase change materials was selected. The results showed that Na2SiO3·9H2O, KCl, and α-Fe2O3were the most critical process parameters. This research work enriches the selection of composite gel phase change materials for solar greenhouses and provides guidance for the selection of different modified material contents using Na2HPO4·12H2O as the starting material.

In response to the deficiencies of existing fire extinguishing agents, such as insufficient cooling performance, electrical conductivity, and the generation of toxic gases when dealing with lithium battery fires, this study has developed a composite powder fire extinguishing agent that combines commercial ABC dry powder (the main component is ammonium phosphate.) with disodium hydrogen phosphate dodecahydrate (DHPD) to address lithium-ion battery fires. Experiments have shown that 35 %DHPD@ABC can reduce the fire temperature by 297 °C within 20 s in a oil pool fire experiment, representing a 34 % improvement in cooling performance. In thermal runaway (TR) suppression tests, it rapidly lowers the battery temperature to 162 °C, with an 80 % increase in cooling efficiency and effective prevention of TR propagation. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric infrared (TG-IR) analyses reveal that the fire-extinguishing mechanism integrates chemical inhibition with physical cooling and isolation. This composite powder fire extinguishing agent offers an innovative strategy for the prevention of lithium-ion battery fires.

In this paper, carbon particles with micro- and nano-particle size were synthesized through a hydrothermal reaction of glucose, namely C-1(123.1 nm), C-2(229.2 nm), C-3(335.1 nm), C-4(456.2 nm) and C-5(534.0 nm) with distinct sizes. We utilized five size carbon particles as individual fillers into the EHS matrix materials to prepare composite eutectic phase change materials (C/EHS PCMs) by melt blending technique. The impact of carbon particle size on the dispersion stability and thermal properties of Na 2 SO 4 ⋅10H 2 O–Na 2 HPO 4 ⋅12H 2 O (EHS) phase change materials was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis were done to analyze the diameters of carbon particles. The cryogenic-scanning electron microscopy (Cryo-SEM) analysis indicated that the carbon particles resulted in modification in the morphology of the EHS. The results of in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transformed infrared (FTIR) analysis showed only simple physical mixing between carbon particles and EHS. It is shown that adding 0.2 wt.% C-2 can decrease the supercooling degree of EHS to 1.5 ∘ C. The cyclic stability of C/EHS varies significantly depending on the size of carbon particles. The thermal conductivity of EHS increased by 42.1%, 39.9%, 14.4%, 19.5%, and 18.8% with the addition of C-1, C-2, C-3, C-4, and C-5, respectively, at a mass fraction of 0.2%. The results of differential scanning calorimetry reveal that the incorporation of C-1, C-2, C-3, and C-4 into EHS leads to an enhancement of latent heat. The latent heat capacity of EHS with 0.2 wt.% C-2 is 243.4 J⋅g − 1 , and after undergoing 500 cycles of solid-liquid phase transition, the latent heat remained above 200 J⋅g − 1 . Through the comprehensive analysis, the C-2/EHS composite phase change material holds significant potential for advancing building insulation and solar energy storage technologies.
