The sodium super ion conductor (NASICON) structure materials are essential for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their robust crystal structure, excellent ionic conductivity, and flexibility to regulate element and valence. However, the poor electronic conductivity and inferior energy density caused by the nature of these materials have always been obstacles to commercialization. Herein, using yeast as a template to derive NASICON structure Na3MnTi(PO4)3 (NMTP) materials (noted as Yeast@NMTP/C) is presented. The Yeast@NMTP/C material retains the microsphere morphology of the yeast template and not only controls the particle size (around 2 μm) to shorten the Na+ diffusion pathways but also improves the electronic conductivity to optimize the electrochemical kinetics. The Yeast@NMTP/C cathode delivers reversible multielectron redox reactions including Ti4+/3+, Mn3+/2+, and Mn4+/3+ and exhibits a high capacity of 108.5 mAh g–1 with a 79.2% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at a 2C rate. The sodium storage mechanism of Yeast@NMTP/C reveals that the addition of Ti4+/3+ redox plays a key role in improving the Na+ diffusion kinetics, and both solid-solution and two-phase reactions take place during the desodiation and sodiation process. Additionally, the high-rate and long-span cycle performance of Yeast@NMTP/C at 10C is ascribed to contribute to pseudocapacitance.

Na 3 Mn 1−x Cr x Ti(PO 4 ) 3 /C composites with different chromium doping contents (x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, 0.10, 0.12, 0.15), a potential cathode material in sodium-ion batteries with its classical 3D NASCION structure, has been synthesized via a feasible sol-gel route. The doping effects on the crystal structure were verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman and Fourier-infrared spectra (FT-IR). The results show that chromium doping does not alter the structure of the material, and chromium is successfully doped for manganese site. Proper chromium doped Na 3 Mn 1−x Cr x Ti(PO 4 ) 3 /C composites exhibit a high reversible capacity and structural stability . Among them, Na 3 Mn 0.93 Cr 0.07 Ti(PO 4 ) 3 /C and Na 3 Mn 0.90 Cr 0.10 Ti(PO 4 ) 3 /C achieve the highest capacity retention (90.19% after 100 cycles at 0.2 C) and initial discharge specific capacity (119.65 mA h g -1 at 0.2 C), yielding the coulombic efficiency of ~100%. Interestingly, even after cycling at 10 C over 500 cycles, the Na + -storage capacity of 94.37 and 101.51 mA h g -1 with a capacity retention of 79.70% and 73.74% were respectively still obtained with x = 0.07 and 0.10, highlighting their excellent long cycling life and remarkable rate performances. Results from the cyclic voltammetry and impedance spectroscopy studies were combined to verify the enhanced sodium-ion diffusion coefficients .

NASICON structural materials have the advantages of structural stability, high ion conductivity, and high working potential, which have attracted widespread attention as cathode for sodium-ion batteries. Although the three-electron reaction in the NASICON structure Na 3 MnTi(PO 4 ) 3 increases the specific capacity of the material, poor electronic conductivity remains a key factor restricting its practical application. Herein, Na 3 Mn 1-x Zr x Ti(PO 4 ) 3 /C (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07 and 0.1), a typical three-dimensional NASICON structure cathode material for sodium-ion batteries, was synthesized by the sol-gel method. Through powder X-ray diffraction, the Zr 4+ doping in the Na 3 MnTi(PO 4 ) 3 (NMTP) structure was verified. It was found that doping trace amounts of Zr at the Mn site can not only reduce the Jahn-Teller effect caused by Mn 3+ , but also strengthen the Zr-O bond compared to the Mn-O bond, making the crystal structure more stable by reducing the proportion of Mn. According to the findings of the EIS test, a suitable amount of Zr doping can enhance the electronic conductivity and Na ion diffusion coefficient of NMTP/C electrode materials, weaken polarization phenomena, increase electrode reaction rate, and significantly improve the rate performance and cycling performance of Na 3 Mn 1-x Zr x Ti(PO 4 ) 3 material. The Na 3 Mn 1-x Zr x Ti(PO 4 ) 3 /C sample prepared has high initial capacity of 124mAh/g, a capacity retention rate of 86 % after 200 cycles at 0.2C, and a capacity retention rate of 84 % after 500 cycles at 1C. This proves that the material still exhibits excellent cycling stability and structural stability after high current cycling. More importantly, the Na 3 Mn 0.95 Zr 0.05 Ti(PO 4 ) 3 (Zr5-NMTP)//Hard carbon full battery also exhibits ideal electrochemical performance.

Sodium (Na) super ion conductor (NASICON) structure Na3MnTi(PO4)3 (NMTP) is considered a promising cathode for sodium-ion batteries due to its reversible three-electron reaction. However, the inferior electronic conductivity and sluggish reaction kinetics limit its practical applications. Herein, we successfully constructed a three-dimensional cross-linked porous architecture NMTP material (AsN@NMTP/C) by a natural microbe of Aspergillus niger (AsN), and the structure of different NMTP cathodes was optimized by adjusting different transition metal Mn/Ti ratios. Both approaches effectively altered the three-dimensional NMTP structure, not only improving electronic conductivity and controlling Na+ diffusion pathways but also enhancing the electrochemical kinetics of the material. The resultant AsN@NMTP/C-650, sintered at 650 °C, exhibits better electrochemical performance with higher reversible three-electron reactions corresponding to the voltage platforms of Ti4+/3+, Mn3+/2+, and Mn4+/3+ around 2.1, 3.6, and 4.1 V (vs Na+/Na), respectively. The capacity retention rate is up to 89.3% after 1000 cycles at a 2C rate. Moreover, a series of results confirms that the Na3.4Mn1.2Ti0.8(PO4)3 cathode has the most excellent electrochemical performance when the Mn/Ti ratio is 1.2/0.8, with a high capacity of 96.59 mAh g–1 and 97.1% capacity retention after 500 cycles.

Symmetric sodium-ion batteries possess promising features such as low cost, easy manufacturing process, and facile recycling post-process, which are suitable for the application of large-scale stationary energy storage. Herein, we proposed a symmetric sodium-ion battery based on dual-electron reactions of a NASICON-structured Na3MnTi(PO4)3 material. The Na3MnTi(PO4)3 electrode can deliver a stable capacity of up to 160 mAh g–1 with a Coulombic efficiency of 97% at 0.1 C by utilizing the redox reactions of Ti3+/4+, Mn2+/3+, and Mn3+/4+. This is the first time to investigate the symmetric sodium-ion full cell using Na3MnTi(PO4)3 as both cathode and anode in the organic electrolyte, demonstrating excellent reversibility and cycling performance with voltage plateaus of about 1.4 and 1.9 V. The full cell exhibits a reversible capacity of 75 mAh g–1 at 0.1 C and an energy density of 52 Wh kg–1. In addition, both ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and first-principles calculations are employed to investigate the sodiation mechanism and structural evolution. The current research provides a feasible strategy for the symmetric sodium-ion batteries to achieve high energy density.

A lately proposed NASICON-structured Na 3 MnTi(PO 4 ) 3 (NMTP) provides a promising solution that enables a large theoretical specific capacity and a high voltage discharge platform. However, it encounters a difficulty in electronic conductivity which obstructs its further implements. Herein, in this work we propose the Sodium-ion battery cathode materials Na 3 Mn 1−x Sc x Ti(PO 4 ) 3 /C with different Sc contents (x = 0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07, 0.1), a potential cathode material for sodium-ion batteries with typical three-dimensional NASICON structure were synthesized by sol-gel method aiming to address the problem. Doping of Sc 3+ in the NMTP structure was proved by powder X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy techniques . Impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique results suggest that appropriate-proportion doping has dramatically enhanced the electrical conductivity and Na ion migration of the NMTP matrix. Na 3 Mn 0.95 Sc 0.05 Ti(PO 4 ) 3 exhibited a higher initial discharge specific capacity (123 mA h /g at 0.2 C, 111 mA h /g at 1 C) and the highest cycling stability (capacity retention of 93% after 250cycles at 0.2 C, capacity retention of 88% after 500 cycles at 1 C). In addition, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction tests revealed the reasons for the improved cycling stability of the materials due to doping. Furthermore, Na 3 Mn 0.95 Sc 0.05 Ti(PO 4 ) 3 //hard carbon full cells also demonstrates ideal electrochemical properties .

Aqueous rechargeable batteries have promising application in large-scale energy storage owing to their cost-effective, eco-friendly, high safety and good electrochemical performance. An aqueous rechargeable hybrid sodium/zinc battery with Zn anode, Na 3 MnTi(PO 4 ) 3 cathode and 0.5 mol L -1 CH 3 COONa and Zn(CH 3 COO) 2 mixed electrolyte has been designed for the first time. The battery delivered a reversible and stable capacity of 95.0 mAh g −1 at 1.5 C for 50 cycles with a high and flat working voltage of 1.75 V vs. Zn 2+ /Zn. Impressively, the battery showed the excellent cycling performance and superior rate capability, which can be cycled at 10.0 C for 2000 cycles with a capacity retention of 93.6% and a reversible capacity of 55.6 mAh g −1 at 30.0 C. Meanwhile, the co-intercalation mechanism of hybrid Na + and Zn 2+ in the cathode is elucidated by cyclic voltammogram, ex-situ XRD, ex-situ XPS and Rietveld refinement analysis. This work gets insight into the charge/discharge processes of hybrid ions for NASICON-structured Na 3 MnTi(PO 4 ) 3 , providing a feasible way to design cost-effective, high safety and long-term aqueous rechargeable batteries.

While sulfide solid electrolytes such as Na 11 Sn 2 PS 12 can allow fast transport of Na + ions, their utilization in solid sodium ion batteries is rather unsuccessful since they are not electrochemically compatible to both high-voltage cathodes and sodium metal anode. In this work, we devise an effective approach toward realizing solid sodium ion batteries, using the Na 11 Sn 2 PS 12 electrolyte and slurry-coated NASICON-type Na 3 MnTi(PO 4 ) 3 @C as high-voltage cathode, highly beneficial for low processing cost and high content/loading of active cathode matter. We report that through significantly improved integrity of electrolyte-cathode interface, such solid sodium ion batteries can deliver outstanding cycling and rate performance, with a charge voltage resilience up to 4.1 V, a high cathode discharge capacity of 128.7 mAh g −1 against the Na 3 MnTi(PO 4 ) 3 @C in cathode is achieved at 0.05 C, and capacity retention ratio of 82% with a rate of 0.1 C is realized after prolonged cycling at room temperature. Besides, we demonstrate that such a solid sodium ion battery can even perform at a sub-zero Celsius temperature of −10°C, when the conventional control cell using liquid electrolyte completely fail to function. This work is to offer a dependable avenue in engineering next generation of safe solid ion batteries based on highly sustainable and much cheaper material resources.
