Na 3 V 2 O 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F is characterized by a high theoretical specific capacity, high-voltage plateaus, large ion diffusion channels, and stable three-dimensional structure, which is a promising cathode candidate for rechargeable aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs). Nevertheless, the low electronic conductivity hinders its cycling and rate performance. In this work, a facile microwave-assisted solvothermal approach with postheat treatment has successfully produced Na 3 V 2 O 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F nanoparticles with the dimension of 20–50 nm wrapped by reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The high pseudocapacitive contribution, high diffusion coefficient, low electrochemical impedance, favorable electrode wettability, and stable structure can be obtained by optimizing the chemical components of electrolyte and the content of rGO, facilitating the Zn 2+ storage performance. Hence, Na 3 V 2 O 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F@rGO delivers excellent electrochemical properties such as a high capacity of 127.0 mAh g −1 at 0.5C, a stable capacity of 63.9 mAh g −1 at 30C after 5000 cycles, and a high average voltage plateau of 1.50 V in hybrid aqueous electrolyte (2 M zinc trifluoromethane sulfonate (Zn(OTf) 2 ) and 4 M lithium trifluoromethane sulfonate (LiOTf)). Furthermore, exceptional cycling performance in the soft-pack batteries with the size of 3 × 3.5 cm 2 includes a reversible capacity of 84.1 mAh g −1 at 10C after 1000 cycles. In situ X-ray diffraction, ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy reveal reversible Zn 2+ insertion/extraction process.

Although sodium vanadium fluorophosphate, Na3(VO1–xPO4)2F1+2x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1), is a highly promising cathode candidate for sodium-ion batteries because of its stable structure and high working voltage, the low charge diffusion dynamics and the inactive materials used in traditional coating electrodes reduce the energy density of a sodium-ion full battery. Hence, Na3V2O2(PO4)2F/graphene aerogels (NVPF/GAs) with a three-dimensional continuous porous network are first prepared by coassembly and freeze-drying. The three-dimensional porous network helps to obtain a high NVPF content of 81 wt %, relieve the volume change for improving the cyclability, and enhance the wettability of the electrode with the electrolyte for accelerating the diffusion dynamics of sodium ions and electrons. As a directly used freestanding cathode without the use of any binder/collector, an optimized freestanding NVPF/GA electrode exhibits excellent cycling and rate performances compared to traditional coating electrodes. The average capacities at current densities of 0.2, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 5.0 C are 135.4, 128.0, 125.1, 121.9, and 115.1 mA h g–1, respectively. Especially, it maintains a capacity retention of 100% after 1000 cycles at an ultrahigh current of 40 C. A sodium-ion full battery with the NVPF/GA cathode and the Sb/graphene/carbon anode attains a of 82.1 mA h g–1 without an obvious decline after 100 cycles.

Solid-state batteries have attracted significant attention due to their safety, but most studies focus on room-temperature performance. Herein, the electrochemical performance of quasi-solid-state sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) based on the perfluorosulfonate-based polymer electrolyte (PFSA-Na) and Na 3 V 2 O 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F (NVOPF) cathode over a wide temperature range (from −25 to 65 °C) is investigated. The quasi-solid-state half-cells (Na//PFSA-Na//NVOPF@rGO) exhibit a long-term cycle life (88.1% capacity retention at 4 C after 1000 cycles) at room temperature. A high discharge capacity can be maintained even at a low temperature of −25 °C and it can be restored to the original value when the temperature increases again to 25 °C. Meanwhile, full-cells (hard carbon//PFSA-Na//NVOPF@rGO) can also deliver stable cycling performance in a wide temperature range (−25, 25, and 65 °C).

Side reactions between high-voltage cathodes and electrolytes remain a critical obstacle to the advancement of solid-state batteries—particularly for Na-ion systems—due to the higher Na + /Na redox potential. Despite recent extensive efforts, achieving a long cycle life is still challenging at the 4.2 V cut-off (versus Na + /Na). Here we design a room-temperature isotropic epitaxial growth to achieve a relatively uniform and dense metal–organic framework epilayer on Na 3 V 2 O 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F surfaces. Despite using polyethylene oxide, a typical ether-based solid polymer electrolyte, the cathode with isotropic epilayer exhibits enhanced cycling performance at the 4.2 V cut-off (retaining up to 77.9% of its initial capacity after 1,500 cycles). Combining experimental measurements and theoretical analyses, the key factor governing isotropic epitaxial growth behaviour is explicitly elucidated. Furthermore, we develop a self-designed high-sensitivity characterization method, in situ linear sweep voltammetry coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, to elucidate the failure mechanism of polyethylene oxide on Na 3 V 2 O 2 (PO 4 ) 2 F surfaces and and to reveal the excellent electrochemical stability of the isotropic epilayer. Interestingly, the universality of this approach has also been validated, highlighting its strong potential as an effective strategy for enabling high-energy-density batteries.
