Hypothesis Na 5 V 12 O 32 (NVO) is a potential cathode for aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs). However, it suffers severe capacity decay due to the dissolution of the active material. The structural design may be an effective solution to the problem. Experiments Herein, we construct a typical two-dimensional hierarchical structure of Na 5 V 12 O 32 @graphene (NVO@G) via a facile molten salt method. Findings The capacity fading problem is solved by the in-situ conversion of NVO@G to a more stable hierarchical system during cycling. The in-situ formed zinc pyrovanadate (Zn 3 V 2 O 7 (OH) 2 ·2H 2 O, ZVO) nanosheets on the surface of graphene exhibits excellent zinc-ion storage stability. The presence of graphene induces the growth of NVO nanobelts to construct the typical two-dimensional hierarchical structure. Additionally, the in-situ conversion makes the formed ZVO nanosheets contact with graphene better. Benefitting from the hierarchical nanostructure and in-situ phase conversion, the NVO@G electrode shows excellent long-term stability (96.4% retention after 340 cycles at 0.3 A g −1 , 85.7% retention after 4400 cycles at 5 A g −1 ) and high zinc ion storage capacity (220 mAh g −1 at 0.3 A g −1 ), which is superior to those of most electrode materials previously reported.

High-voltage layered oxide cathodes have received extensive attention for sodium-ion batteries owing to their potential high energy and power densities, but their stabilization remains a universal challenge. Herein, a stable high-voltage K x Na 5-x V 12 O 32 cathode is designed by synergistically tuning the irreversible phase and oxygen vacancies through the substitution of Na with K. The functional mechanism regulating the electronic structure of K x Na 5-x V 12 O 32 is elucidated: K substitution strengthens V 3 d –O 2 p hybridization and V 3 d –orbital electron delocalization in the K 0.147 Na 4.853 V 12 O 32 structure, enriching charge distribution and reinforcing the V 3 O 8 structure. This promots electron transfer kinetics, suppresses irreversible phase transition, and lowers the Na + diffusion energy barrier. Moreover, the reversible redox reaction of V 5+ /V 4+ is significantly enhanced, delivering 250.1 mA h g −1 (1.5–4.3 V vs. Na/Na + ), which increases the average operating voltage from 4.0 to 4.3 V and boosts the overall energy density. Consequently, the K 0.147 Na 4.853 V 12 O 32 electrode significantly enhances cycling performance, retaining 98.2% of the capacity after 1000 cycles at 1300 mA g −1 and enabling stable cycling with 98.7% retention after 300 cycles in a hard carbon | | K 0.147 Na 4.853 V 12 O 32 pouch cell. This strategy of electronic structure modulation offers avenues for developing high energy density stable vanadium-based cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Sodium vanadate have been widely used as a lithium-ion battery anode. However, its further application is restricted by the capacity attenuation during cycles because of its easy solubility in electrolyte, huge structural change, and low conductivity. Here, a lithium-ion battery electrode based on Cu-Cu2O coated Na5V12O32 nanowire arrays using a predischarge-electrodeposition method is freported. Remarkably, in the Cu-Cu2O@Na5V12O32 electrode, the Na5V12O32 nanowires function as the skeleton, and Cu-Cu2O nanoparticles function as the coating layer. At a specific current of 50 mA g−1, the composite electrode exhibits discharge and charge capacity of 837 and 821 mAh g−1 after 80 cycles, respectively, which is much higher than that of the Na5V12O32 nanowires electrode. This research provides a new pathway to explore electrode materials with enhanced electrochemical performance.

Vanadate-based synthesis of battery electrodes has become a topic of research interest due to the high lithium storage performance. However, the rapid capacity decay seriously hinders its practical application. In order to improve the potential for Co 3 V 2 O 8 (CVO) as an electrode in lithium batteries, a Na 5 V 12 O 32 nanowire precursor with a smooth surface was obtained using the hydrothermal method. Next, the CVO nanowires assembled by nanosheets were fabricated by cation exchange from the Na 5 V 12 O 32 precursor. Finally, the elemental phosphorus-coated CVO was successfully synthesized by a custom furnace. The characterization of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy (ICP-ES) quantified the ratio of P and CVO, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed the presence and coverage. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) further demonstrated the existence and morphology of P and CVO. Meanwhile, electrochemical measurements illustrated the stable lithium storage and notable rate performance of the P-CVO electrode as compared to AN-CVO. The P-CVO electrode holds a higher stable cycle performance after 190 cycles, with discharge specific capacity of 415.3 mA h g −1 and capacity retention of 97% at a current density of 1.0 A g −1 (872 mA h g −1 , 2.0 A g −1 , 98.8%), versus AN-CVO with 320.6 mA h g −1 (capacity retention of 79.5%) after only 100 cycles. Thence, the synthetic strategy provides a potential solution to enhance the stability of electrodes for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.
