Ultra-stable, high-rate solid-state sodium batteries with bulk–interface engineering of NaCrO2 cathode

Jialin Xu,Baolong Liang,Yiwei Lv,Bingbing Li,Sangni Zhong,Lituo Zheng,Mingdeng Wei,Zhensheng Hong

Solid-state sodium batteries (SSBs) have attracted great interests due to their high energy density, good safety and cost-effectiveness. However, their cycling stability and rate capability remain limited. Here, we report a synergistic modification strategy of Li + bulk doping and carbon surface coating on the O3-type layered oxide NaCrO 2 (NCO). Li + doping enhances sodium ion diffusion coefficient (from 8.30*10 −11  cm 2  s −1 to 1.22 * 10 −10  cm 2  s −1 ) and improves structural reversibility during cycling. Meanwhile, the uniform carbon coating effectively inhibits the side reactions on the surface and reduces the electrode volume change to 0.7 %. The modified NCO-1.5 L@8 %P material shows excellent cycle stability and rate performance with conventional organic electrolyte (80.8 % retention after 1600 cycles, and 113.5 mAh g −1 at 10C current rate). Leveraging enhanced solid–solid interfacial compatibility, this material was further used to assemble NCO-1.5 L@8 %P/0.2 Mg-NZSP/Na solid state batteries. Under a high current rate of 2C, the SSB cycles stably with a capacity retention rate of 95.5 % after 200 cycles. When the current is increased to 5C/10C, a capacity of 102.7/96.1 mAh g −1 can still be obtained, effectively overcoming the rate capability limitations typically associated with conventional solid-state batteries. Through a comprehensive design strategy encompassing bulk-phase structural regulation, interfacial modification, and solid-state adaptation, this work elucidates the regulation mechanism by which synergistic modifications enhance electrochemical kinetics and interfacial stability.

Superior rate performance and structural evolution of O3-type layered NaCrO2 for sodium ion batteries at high temperatures

Meng Xiangcong,Liang Jinji,Liang Min,Li Wenya,Lin Chenhan,Ke Xi,Shi Zhicong,Liu Liying

In order to meet the practical application of sodium ion batteries (SIBs), a low energy consumption method is recommended to synthesize the layered NaCrO 2 cathode materials. Enabled by the larger Na + diffusion coefficients promoted by a proper high temperature, the as-synthesized O3-type NaCrO 2 material shows superior rate performance even at elevated temperatures, exhibiting 47.4 mA h g −1 at 100 C and 60°C. Opposite to the good cyclic capability at room temperature, however, the high-temperature cyclability of NaCrO 2 deteriorates due to the complex irreversible structural evolution in NaCrO 2 during cycling at elevated temperatures. This work boosts the industrial development of layered oxide cathode materials for SIBs with outstanding high-rate performance especially at high temperatures, and in the meantime deepens the understanding of the high-temperature capacity decay mechanism for layered oxide cathode materials.

Lattice Dynamics and Thermodynamic Properties of NaCrO2: An Integrated Experimental and First-Principles Study

Yang Zhang,Xuewei Lv,Mengjiao Jiao,Zhuoyang Li,Wenjie Wei,Guishang Pei

NaCrO 2 is an indispensable compound in the separation of vanadium from chromium in high-chromium vanadium slag, highlighting the need for comprehensive thermodynamic data for this compound. In this study, a high-purity NaCrO 2 compound was synthesized by solid-state sintering. Using density functional theory (DFT) combined with experimental measurements, the lattice dynamics and thermodynamic properties of NaCrO 2 were comprehensively investigated. The phonon structure was computed using first-principles methods, and the absence of imaginary frequencies was observed, demonstrating its dynamic stability. The low-temperature heat capacity of NaCrO 2 was measured using a physical properties measurement system (PPMS). Separation of the experimental heat capacity into lattice and magnetic contributions yields a magnetic entropy of 11.30 J K −1 mol −1 , which agrees well with the theoretical spin‑only entropy of Cr 3+ ( R ln4 = 11.53 J K −1 mol −1 ). The entropy at 298.15 K is derived as 78.25 ± 0.2 J K −1 mol −1 . The DFT-calculated thermodynamic properties show good agreement with the experimental results, confirming the reliability of the computational approach. This study provides critical thermodynamic property for the NaCrO 2 in the Na 2 O–Cr 2 O 3 system, thereby directly supplementing the fundamental thermodynamic database required for the optimization of high-efficiency vanadium–chromium separation processes.

One-step Surface-to-bulk Modification of NaCrO2 Cathode for Durable Sodium-ion Batteries

Chen Chen,Yingbin Hong,Baolong Liang,Yiyin Huang,Mingdeng Wei,Hu-Rong Yao,Lituo Zheng,Zhensheng Hong

NaCrO 2 is a promising O3-type cathode material in sodium-ion batteries. However, it suffers from rapid capacity fading due to the unstable structure upon cycling. This work shows that in situ carbon coating during the synthesis process has multiple synergistic effects and can effectively stabilize the material structure and improve the cyclability. It is found that sodium vacancy and carbon coating in NaCrO 2 synchronously occur, which improve its sodium-ion transport kinetics, structural stability during cycling and the air stability. More importantly, the strategy is universal in that various sources of carbon display similar effect. As a result, the asphalt-derived carbon coated material has a high initial capacity of 129 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C rate with an initial Coulombic efficiency up to 98.2 %. In addition, it shows an excellent rate capability and cycling performance with 81.1 % retention after 1000 cycles at 5 C in half cell. Moreover, a full cell has constructed by coupling with hard carbon anode, which shows a high discharge capacity of 121.9 mAh g −1 with a high Coulomb efficiency of 94.7 %, excellent rate capability and good cycling stability. This work demonstrates a general modification method on NaCrO 2 that has the potential for practical applications. Graphical In-situ carbon coating : This work shows that in situ carbon coating of NaCrO 2 cathode for sodium-ion batteries generates multiple synergistic effects and can effectively stabilize the material structure and improve the cyclability. The asphalt-derived carbon coated NaCrO 2 has a high capacity of 129 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C, excellent rate capability and cycling performance with 81.1 % retention after 1000 cycles at 5 C.

Yuanqi Yang,Liying Liu,Jun Liu,Wenya Li,Min Liang,Huizi Li,chunsheng Li,Yan Sun,Zhicong Shi,Su Ma

A NaCrO 2 @C flexible free-standing cathode is designed and fabricated via a facile electrospinning strategy, in which electrochemically active NaCrO 2 nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed in the flexible carbon nanofibers . Serving as the binder-free cathode for sodium-ion batteries, the as-constructed NaCrO 2 @C flexible free-standing cathode delivers a long cycling life (81 % capacity retention after 1000 cycles) with a high loading (7.6 mg cm −2 ). The enhancements for sodium-ion insertion/desertion is assigned to the dramatically decrease the polarization between electrodes and avoid the volume expansion during high-rate cycling. The NaCrO 2 @C flexible free-standing cathode opens up exciting possibilities for the development of advanced flexible sodium-ion batteries with both excellent mechanical flexibility and electrochemical properties .

Manipulating irreversible phase transition of NaCrO2 towards an effective sodium compensation additive for superior sodium-ion full cells

Bolei Shen,Renming Zhan,Chunlong Dai,Yi Li,Linyu Hu,Yubin Niu,Jian Jiang,Qiang Wang,Maowen Xu

During the first charge process of full cells, a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film is formed when the active ion from the cathode is consumed, resulting in irreversible capacity loss. This phenomenon has shown to be more serious in sodium-ion full cells than in lithium-ion full cells. Although many strategies have been employed to alleviate the loss of sodium ions, such as presodiation and construction of an artificial solid electrolyte interface , they are both cumbersome and time-consuming. For the first time, NaCrO 2 was used as an effective self-sacrificing sodium compensation additive in sodium-ion full cells due to the irreversible phase transition of NaCrO 2 in a high voltage region can deliver an irreversible capacity of up to 230 mAh g −1 . Based on this design, sodium-ion full cells coupled with hard carbon as the anode exhibited higher capacity, less polarization, greater energy density , and superior cycle stability than those of a pristine electrode. This is mainly attributed to the removal of sodium ions from NaCrO 2 , which compensates for the loss of sodium ions consumed during the formation of the SEI film on the anode surface during the first charge process. Overall, this work opens up a new avenue for exploring sodium compensation strategy and contributing to practical application of sodium-ion full cells.

O3-Type NaCrO2 as a Superior Cathode Material for Sodium/Potassium-Ion Batteries Ensured by High Structural Reversibility

Jinji Liang,Liying Liu,Xiangsi Liu,Xiangcong Meng,Linyong Zeng,Jun Liu,Jie Li,Zhicong Shi,Yong Yang

O3-type NaCrO2 is attracting increasing attention as potential cathode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Bare NaCrO2 is usually synthesized by a solid-state reaction and suffers from serious capacity decay and poor power capability. Modification by coating is an effective method to improve the electrochemical properties, but it inevitably reduces the energy density. To avoid the decrease of energy density and optimize the electrochemical performance, a specific route, i.e., a freeze-drying-assisted sol–gel method, has been adopted to synthesize bare NaCrO2 in this work. Three-phase coexistence during charging is confirmed for the first time, which contributes to delaying the disappearance of the O3 phase and then improving the structural reversibility, resulting in superior cycle stability (∼50% capacity retention after 3000 cycles at 5C). Meanwhile, as-synthesized NaCrO2 delivers an outstanding rate capability (82.1 mAh g–1 at 50C), which is attributed to the fast Na+ diffusivity and high electronic conductivity proved by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. It is worth mentioning that NaCrO2 also exhibits excellent electrochemical properties when used as a cathode for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs). This work provides new perspectives on the structural evolution of NaCrO2, and the results are expected to contribute to the development of SIBs and PIBs.

Insights into magnesium and titanium co-doping to stabilize the O3-type NaCrO2 cathode material for sodium-ion batteries

Wenya Li,Yuanqi Yang,Yuqing Yang,Min Liang,Huizi Li,Xi Ke,Liying Liu,Yan Sun,Chunsheng Li,Zhicong Shi,Su Ma

The development of high-performance cathode materials is critical to the practical application of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). O3-type NaCrO 2 (NCO) is one of the most competitive cathodes, but it suffers from rapid capacity decay caused by severe irreversible structural evolution. An Mg-Ti co-doped Na 0.99 Cr 0.95 Mg 0.02 Ti 0.03 O 2 (NCO-MT) cathode material is designed and synthesized via a facile solid-state reaction to enhance the cyclability of NCO. A capacity retention of 71.6% after 2500 cycles with the capacity fade rate of 0.011% per cycle is achieved for NCO-MT at 5 C, which is attributed to the highly reversible crystal structure during cycling. Our findings offer a novel insight into the high-performance O3-type layered cathode materials for SIBs and are beneficial to promote the development of high-rate SIBs.

Highly stable and encapsulation-microstructural cathode derived by self-pressurization behavior in Na-halides-based all-solid-state batteries

Lin Li,Jingming Yao,Ruonan Xu,Qiaoquan Lin,Xinlin Yan,Chuang Yu,Long Zhang

The emerging halide solid electrolytes (SEs) possess superior (electro)chemical oxidation stabilities compared to sulfide SEs , but the understanding on their good compatibility toward oxide active materials needs to be further studied. Here, we develop a type of Zr-doped Na 3 YbCl 6 chloride SEs. The optimized composition gains a high ionic conductivity and broad electrochemical oxidation window. The in situ and ex situ analyses verify that the chloride as ionic additive in the cathode is highly compatible with NaCrO 2 . Importantly, it is revealed that the volume change in the cathode can act a position effect on the microstructure evolution . It promotes to form a special core-shell-like structure with homogeneous chloride encapsulating NaCrO 2 grains. Such a soft intimate contact promotes a uniform ion transport and mitigate (electro)chemo-mechanical stresses. The prerequisites generating this specific microstructure are proposed. The main capacity loss of the assembled all-solid-state Na batteries (ASSNBs) only occurs in the initial dozens of cycles, induced by the irreversible O3→O'3 phase transition in NaCrO 2 . The chloride additives with a soft feature and high oxidation-stability allow a high-quality interface in the oxide cathode and an excellent cycling stability of the ASSNBs.
