Eco-friendly NaNbO 3 (NN)-based relaxor ferroelectric ceramics with high dielectric constants cannot meet the high piezoelectric activity quality factors (FOMs: d 33 × g 33 ) requirements of electromechanically coupled devices. To solve this issue, we successfully improved the piezoelectricity of NN-based relaxor piezoceramics while reducing the dielectric constant based on microstructural tuning by virtue of the chemical design and texturing engineering. Mainly affected by the highly <001> c orientation and relaxor MPB, the obtained novel 88.5NaNbO 3 –10Ba(Ti 0.7 Sn 0.3 )O 3 –1.5NaSbO 3 texture ceramics enjoys an ultrahigh piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 = 423 pC/N), reaching a record high in NaNbO 3 -based lead-free ceramics. Meanwhile, a large FOMs value ( d 33 × g 33 = 13.3·10 −12 m 2 /N) is successfully realized due to the suppression of the dielectric constant. More importantly, the stable phase/domain evolution also encourages excellent temperature stability for piezoelectricity and FOMs. Especially for the piezoelectricity, when the annealing temperature is < 140 °C, the d 33 of the 1.5T ceramics can be stabilized ∼ 400 pC/N. Such excellent electrical temperature stability shows more competition in the reported NN-based piezoceramics. This work not only provides a design paradigm for high-performance piezoelectric materials , but also facilitates their development in electromechanical coupling devices.

The realization of high piezoelectric performance and excellent temperature stability simultaneously in Pb-free ceramics is the key for replacing Pb-containing perovskites in the industry. In this study, large piezoelectric performance (d33 = 354 pC N−1) was achieved in a wide temperature sinterable potassium-free NaNbO3–BaTiO3–BaSnO3 system, which is twice more than the piezoelectricity found in NaNbO3–BaTiO3 binary ceramics. Structural refinement of high-energy synchrotron powder diffraction data suggests a single tetragonal structure with P4bm symmetry for the studied NaNbO3-based Pb-free ceramic. The results indicate that the small axial ratio favoring polarization reorientation benefits strong piezoelectricity, while the large oxygen octahedron tilt enhances the stability of the P4bm structure during the changing temperature according to the in situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements and provides the foundation for the excellent thermal stability (20–100 °C) of the piezoelectric properties. A single tetragonal phase with a tiny axial ratio and large oxygen octahedron tilt effectively balances the piezoelectricity and thermal stability in Pb-free systems.

To meet the requirements of environmental friendliness, high-performance lead-free piezoelectric materials have become important materials for next-generation electronic devices. Here, lead-free and potassium-free NaNbO3 (NN)-based ceramics with high piezoelectric (d33 = 361 ± 10 pC/N) and dielectric (εr = 4500) properties were obtained by tolerant preparation techniques. The excellent piezoelectric and dielectric properties can be attributed to the relaxor morphotropic phase boundaries (R–MPB) and coexisting domain regions, which are beneficial in lowering the free energy and greatly improving the dielectric response and domain switching capability. Furthermore, the d33 of NaNbO3-10Ba(Ti0.7Sn0.3)O3-1.5NaSbO3 (NN-10BTS-1.5NS) ceramics can be maintained at 350 pC/N over the range of 25–80 °C with a change rate of less than 10%, exhibiting excellent temperature stability. Based on a series of in situ characterizations, the variations of the phase and domain structures of NN-based relaxor piezoelectric ceramics with temperature are clearly demonstrated. This work not only proposes new materials for sensors and actuators but also provides an excellent strategy for designing high-performance piezoelectric ceramics through phase and domain engineering.

The remarkable polarization and stability of ceramic capacitors make them promising candidates for pulse-power devices in energy-storage systems. However, the energy-storage density of ceramic capacitors is severely limited by the negative correlation between the maximum polarization ( P m ) and the breakdown strength (BDS), leading to the impediment of broader applications. Herein, we reconcile the contradiction by synthesizing high-performance NaNbO 3 -based ceramics via chemical doping with Bi(Ni 0.5 Ti 0.25 Zr 0.25 )O 3 (BNTZ). An antiferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition with a decline in polarization hysteresis is induced by the dopant. Further studies have shown that the existence of a tiny quantity of the polar phase in the nonpolar matrix contributes to a higher P m , and the enhancement of both electrical resistivity and activation energy of the conductance also improved their BDS. The thinning process is also identified to be important in the improvement of its BDS and W rec , resulting in the maximum energy-storage density of 3.53 J/cm 3 with an energy efficiency of 74.2 % in thinned 10 mol% BNTZ-doped NaNbO 3 samples. Our findings provide a feasible approach to simultaneously improving energy-storage density and efficiency in NaNbO 3 -based ceramic capacitors.
