High ionic conductive sodium β-alumina (SBA) and SBA-NaPF6 composite solid electrolytes prepared by cold sintering process

Yuchen Li,Qi Wang,Xuetong Zhao,Binlang He,Yongjian Xiao,Jing Guo,Lijun Yang,Ruijin Liao

Sodium β- alumina (SBA) electrolytes are among the most excellent candidates for all-solid-state batteries due to their high electrochemical performances and low cost of sodium resources. However, thermally sintering at above 1400 °C is required to fabricate high dense SBA electrolytes, thus giving rise to a huge energy consumption. Here, dense SBA electrolytes and (1- x )SBA- x NaPF 6 ( x  = 5, 10, 15, 20 wt%) composites were fabricated using cold sintering process (CSP) below 300 °C with 2 mol/L NaOH solution as transient chemistry. The ionic conductivity of SBA electrolytes is significantly enhanced from 5.53×10 -6  S cm -1 to 5.91 × 10 −4  S cm −1 as 15 wt% NaPF 6 was introduced to the composite, which is comparable with the SBA sintered above 1400 °C. CSP may provide a promising approach for the fabrication of solid-state electrolytes by avoiding the detrimental impact of high temperature heat treatment.

Carbon-coated MoS1.5Te0.5 nanocables for efficient sodium-ion storage in non-aqueous dual-ion batteries

Liu Yangjie,Hu Xiang,Li Junwei,Zhong Guobao,Yuan Jun,Zhan Hongbing,Tang Yongbing,Wen Zhenhai

Sodium-based dual-ion batteries have received increased attention owing to their appealing cell voltage (i.e., >3 V) and cost-effective features. However, the development of high-performance anode materials is one of the key elements for exploiting this electrochemical energy storage system at practical levels. Here, we report a source-template synthetic strategy for fabricating a variety of nanowire-in-nanotube MS x Te y @C (M = Mo, W, Re) structures with an in situ-grown carbon film coating, termed as nanocables. Among the various materials prepared, the MoS 1.5 Te 0.5 @C nanocables are investigated as negative electrode active material in combination with expanded graphite at the positive electrode and NaPF 6 -based non-aqueous electrolyte solutions for dual-ion storage in coin cell configuration. As a result, the dual-ion lab-scale cells demonstrate a prolonged cycling lifespan with 97% capacity retention over 1500 cycles and a reversible capacity of about 101 mAh g −1 at specific capacities (based on the mass of the anode) of 1.0 A g −1 and 5.0 A g −1 , respectively.

Reinvented sodium anode by creating a metal-bulk storage matrix with an expanded 3D plating/stripping mechanism

Chutao Wang,Kun Wang,Hongbin Ni,Congcong Du,Xiaoting Yin,Jingmin Fan,Ruming Yuan,Yuxin Tang,Jiawei Yan,Mingsen Zheng,Quanfeng Dong

Direct metal anodes are plating/stripping processes without a supporting framework and bulk ion conductivity; they are the electrodes susceptible to collapse and limiting the electrochemical reaction to the two-dimensional surface. The focus of this era is mostly on building a solid electrolyte interface (SEI). However, simply building protective layers cannot address essential issues; a thorough transformation of the metal electrode bulk is critical. We propose a reconstructed sodium metal anode (RSMA) by implanting an activatable ion-conductive network to the bulk. NaPF 6 will be activated with an electrolyte to conduct ions and form an anion-derived SEI. Conductive polymers become the supporting skeleton; thus, the RSMA has a metal-bulk storage matrix and an expanded three-dimensional plating/stripping mechanism and permits the homogeneous deposition/dissolution of Na + in high dimensions. Last, RSMA symmetric cells were stably cycled for 2700 hours and achieved a 100% depth of discharge. RSMA||PB cells can achieve 10-coulomb cycling and a proof-of-concept pouch cell energy density of 367 watt-hours per kilogram.

Bi/C nanosheet microspheres with an open pore structure as anodes for sodium ion batteries with high capacity, excellent rate performance and long cycle life

Ying Li,Xia Zhong,Xianwen Wu,Mingqi Li,Wei Zhang,Dan Wang

To develop high-performance and low-cost anode materials for sodium ion batteries, novel Bi/C nanosheet microspheres with an open pore structure (labeled as ops-Bi/C nanosheet microspheres), in which nanosheets are assembled from Bi nanospheres and disordered C, are synthesized through facile methods using Bi(NO3)3, glucose and ethylene glycol as raw materials. Benefiting from the synergy of the material's unique microstructure, carbon coating and NaPF6–diglyme electrolyte, the ops-Bi/C nanosheet microspheres exhibit a higher stable reversible capacity (∼400 mA h g−1 at 0.1 A g−1) than the theoretical capacity of Bi metal, excellent rate performance (396, 393, 395, 392 and 381 mA h g−1 at 0.2, 1, 5, 10 and 20 A g−1, respectively) and long cycle life (361 mA h g−1 after 10 000 cycles at 5 A g−1). Moreover, even if the mass loading of the ops-Bi/C nanosheet microspheres exceeds 10 mg cm−2, the electrode still shows a high reversible capacity of 321 mA h g−1 at 0.8 A g−1 with good cycle performance. The sodium ion full cells composed of the ops-Bi/C nanosheet microsphere anode and commercial Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) cathode exhibit high energy density (174 W h kg−1(total) at 0.1 A g−1(NVP)) and long cycle performance (600 cycles at 1 A g−1(NVP)).
