In this study, Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) films were prepared by a non-vacuum solution method. The efficiency of an as-fabricated CZTSSe solar cell was improved from 8.0% to 10.9% by adding NaTFSI (sodium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide) in the precursor solution. It was found that the NaTFSI additive could facilitate the formation and grain-growth of CZTSSe during the selenization of the film. As a result, the size of the crystalline grains in the CZTSSe films increased. Besides, a shallow level acceptor rather than a deep level acceptor could be generated in the CZTSSe films by using the NaTFSI additive. The use of NaTFSI could also decrease the relative content of the low valence Sn2+, which was believed to be related with deep level defects in CZTSSe. In addition, the effect of the NaTFSI concentration on the properties of CZTSSe solar cells were investigated. We found that excess NaTFSI in the precursor solution would not influence the recombination of the carriers in the neutral region of the solar cell, but could enhance the recombination of the carriers in the depletion region of the solar cell. Therefore, the performances of CZTSSe solar cells were reduced when excess NaTFSI was added in the precursor solution.

Sodium–metal chloride batteries are usually operated at a relatively high temperature (270–350 °C) to achieve adequate electrochemical performance. Such a high operating temperature may cause several issues and limit their widespread applications. Lowering the operating temperature may alleviate these issues, which can be achieved by reducing the ohmic resistance of a Na−β″-Al2O3 solid electrolyte (BASE) and incorporating a low-melting-point catholyte. Herein, a planar sodium–copper chloride battery is evaluated at intermediate temperatures (from 100 to 175 °C) with a thin BASE disk (500 μm) and a room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL). The RTILs at various concentrations (0.1–0.75 mol L–1) are prepared by dissolving different amounts of sodium bis(trifluoromethanesulfon)imide (NaTFSI) into 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMIm][TFSI]) and used as the catholyte. The effect of NaTFSI addition in [EMIm][TFSI] on the physical properties of the catholyte is examined. With 0.5 mol L–1 NaTFSI in [EMIm][TFSI] ionic liquid to assemble the Na/CuCl2 battery, the fabricated cell delivers a capacity up to 146.5 mAh g–1 when cycled at 175 °C with the current density of 2 mA cm–2 and retains 94.5% capacity after 20 cycles. Moreover, the battery can run steadily at 130 °C and show a reversible capacity of 79.2 mAh g–1 when the operation temperature is set as low as 100 °C. To the best of our knowledge, these are the lowest operation temperatures reported thus far for sodium–metal-chloride-based cells.

Solid-state sodium metal batteries (SSMBs) have emerged as one of the next-generation rechargeable batteries due to their low-cost, high-energy-density, and desirable safety. However, their applications mainly depend on high-performance solid-state electrolytes. Herein, a series of polymer electrolytes is developed by compositing PEO/NaTFSI electrolytes into the PAN/UiO-66-X (X = NH2, NO2, F) nanofiber membranes, and the PAN/UiO-66-X are prepared by in situ growth of UiO-66-X MOFs on the PAN electrospinning nanofiber membranes. All the recovered PEO/PAN/UiO-66-X composite electrolytes possess a highly compact structure with a thickness of around 40 μm. The continuous dense UiO-66-X coatings not only improve mechanical strength of the electrolytes but also provide continuous Na+ transport pathways for high ionic conductivity. In addition, the interconnected pore structure with abundant Lewis acidic metal sites demonstrates strong anion-trapping effects for a high ionic transfer number. As a result, all of the batteries assembled with PEO/PAN/UiO-66-X electrolytes exhibit outstanding rate performance and cycling stability. In particular, the PEO/PAN/UiO-66-X electrolyte is the best with the highest ionic transfer number of 0.87, which could deliver more than 7000 h at 0.1 mA cm–2 in Na//Na symmetric cell and more than 600 cycles at 1C in NVP//Na full cell.

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are promising for large-scale energy storage due to their high cost-effectiveness and safety. Alloy anodes exhibit significantly higher specific capacities compared to those of carbonaceous anode materials, holding great promise for enhancing the energy density of SIBs. However, their practical application is severely hindered by substantial volume expansion, sluggish reaction kinetics, and continuous fracture reformation of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). Here, a multifunctional composite binder system was designed for the Sn anode, which was composed of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), sodium alginate (SA), and sodium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (NaTFSI). The PEO-SA-NaTFSI (PSN) binder integrates ternary synergistic functions: robust adhesion between the active material and current collector, enhanced Na+ transport kinetics, and formation of a stable NaF-rich SEI. Therefore, the Sn-PSN anode achieves an outstanding sodium storage performance with a high capacity of 583.4 mA h g–1 at a current density of 10 A g–1 and 77% capacity retention after 1500 cycles. In addition, the Sn-PSN||Na3V2(PO4)3 full battery can maintain 81% capacity after 200 cycles with an electrode energy density of 169.0 W h kg–1. This work provides a multifunctional binder design strategy with broad application prospects for high-performance anodes of SIBs.
