High performance Li-ion hybrid capacitors with micro-sized Nb14W3O44 as anode

Xiaokai Huang,Wenyang Zhou,Xinwei Chen,Chunhai Jiang,Zhimin Zou

Niobium tungsten oxides (Nb-W-O) have been verified as promising Li storage anodes because of their similar working voltage and cycling stability to Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 but higher specific capacity than the latter. However, the phase and microstructural evolutions of a designated Nb-W-O compound during sintering as well as its possible application in Li-ion hybrid capacitors have not been reported. In this work, micro-sized phase pure Nb 14 W 3 O 44 is obtained by sintering a solvothermal-derived precursor at about 1050 °C, which as a Li-ion insertion host exhibits not only high reversible specific capacity up to 226 mAh g −1 at 0.04 A g −1 , but outstanding rate capability (137 mAh g −1 at 6 A g −1 ) and cycle stability (74.2% capacity retention at 2 A g −1 after 1000 cycles). Such an excellent rate capability enables the Nb 14 W 3 O 4 anode highly matchable to the capacitive cathode and yields high energy densities of 64.6 and 29.2 Wh kg −1 at 198.9 and 14,576 W kg −1 , respectively, in Li-ion hybrid capacitors, along with a high capacity retention of 83.9% after 3,000 cycles at 1 A g −1 . With these excellent electrochemical energy storage performances and a high packing density , the micro-sized Nb 14 W 3 O 44 can be a very promising anode material for both Li-ion batteries and Li-ion hybrid capacitors towards high energy-power outputs.

Precise Phase Architecturing through Nb14W3O44/Nb6.7W10.3O47 Heterostructures Unlocks Fast-Charging Lithium-Ion Batteries with Superior Kinetics

Zeng Huanzhong,Liu Rui,Wang Yumeng,Li Gaoyang,Zhang Tianyun,Ran Fen

The development of advanced anodes with high electronic conductivity and rapid ion diffusion is critical for enabling fast-charging lithium-ion batteries. Precise phase architecture is the key to unlocking the “fast-charging” potential of niobium tungsten oxides. These materials offer a safe operating voltage and a stable framework but are hindered by inherently low electronic conductivity and limited ion diffusion. This study deliberately constructs a heterogeneous junction between Nb 14 W 3 O 44 (Wadsley-Roth phase) and Nb 6.7 W 10.3 O 47 (TTB phase). This precise engineering regulates the occupancy ratios of different Li + diffusion channels and tailors the interfacial electronic structure, thereby achieving superior kinetics. The resultant Nb 14 W 3 O 44 /Nb 6.7 W 10.3 O 47 heterojunction exhibits enhanced ionic diffusion and electronic conductivity, enabling “fast-charging” performance. A state of charge of 27.28% is reached in merely 36 s. When charged at 2.0 A g −1 (∼2.23 min), the specific capacities of 106.29 and 98.34 mAh g −1 are maintained after 2000 and 4000 cycles, respectively. This work underscores the efficacy of precise crystal configuration engineering as a powerful strategy for fabricating niobium tungsten oxide anodes with “fast-charging” performance.

Tailoring three-dimensional hierarchical porosity in Wadsley–Roth Nb14W3O44: A dual-role ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid combustion strategy for ultra-stable and high-rate lithium storage

Yuanyuan Li,Min Yang,Youqin Liu,Xinjian Wang,Lai Chen,Yi Wang,Shuang Qiu,Hubin Shi,Yong Yi,Lili Liu,Shiyong Sun,Yevgeny Aleksandrovich Golubev,Haifeng Liu,Chuanbei Liu,Jianwu Wen

The Wadsley–Roth phase Nb 14 W 3 O 44 emerges as a potential anode candidate for fast-charging lithium-ion batteries, featuring intrinsic crystalline tunnels that theoretically enable ultrafast ion transport. However, realizing this potential highlights a persistent challenge that conventional microstructures fail to reconcile the fundamental trade-off between rapid kinetics and durable interfacial stability. Herein, we address this limitation through an innovative dual-role ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) combustion strategy that directly constructs Nb 14 W 3 O 44 with precisely engineered multi-scale three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical porosity. By serving simultaneously as a chelating agent and a previously overlooked in situ pore-former, EDTA ensures molecular-scale precursor homogenization and gas-foamed architecture in a single process. This tailored architecture concurrently establishes continuous ion pathways and a robust framework, enabling exceptional rate capability (90 mAh g −1 at 9 A g −1 ) coupled with outstanding cycling stability (120 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 3 A g −1 with merely 0.019% capacity decay per cycle). Systematic electrochemical diagnostics further reveal concurrent enhancement of Li + diffusion kinetics and interfacial charge transfer. Collectively, this multi-scale microstructure engineering approach successfully reconciles the long-standing kinetics-stability dilemma in intercalation electrodes, thereby establishing a new design paradigm for durable fast-charging batteries.

Nano-Sized Niobium Tungsten Oxide Anode for Advanced Fast-Charge Lithium-Ion Batteries

Changyuan Guo,Ziang Liu,Kang Han,Liuyang Zhang,Xiaoling Ding,Xuanpeng Wang,Liqiang Mai

The further demand for electric vehicles and smart grids prompts that the comprehensive function of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) has been improved greatly. However, due to sluggish Li + diffusion rate, thermal runway and volume expansion, the commercial graphite as an important part of LIBs is not suitable for fast-charging. Herein, nano-sized Nb 14 W 3 O 44 blocks are effectively synthesized as a fast-charge anode material. The nano-sized structure provides shorter Li + diffusion pathway in the solid phase than micro-sized materials by several orders of magnitude, corresponding to accelerating the Li + diffusion rate, which is beneficial for fast-charge characteristics. Consequently, Nb 14 W 3 O 44 displays excellent long-term cycling life (135 mAh g -1 over 1000 cycles at 10 C) and rate capability at ultra-high current density ( ≈ 103.9 mAh g -1 , 100 C) in half-cells. In situ X-ray diffraction and Raman combined with scanning electron microscopy clearly confirms the stability of crystal and microstructure. Furthermore, the fabricated Nb 14 W 3 O 44 ||LiFePO 4 full cells exhibit a remarkable power density and demonstrate a reversible specific capacity. The pouch cell delivers long cycling life (the capacity retention is as high as 96.6% at 10 C after 5000 cycles) and high-safety performance. Therefore, nano-sized Nb 14 W 3 O 44 could be recognized as a promising fast-charge anode toward next-generation practical LIBs.
