Unsaturated and extremely large magnetoresistance (MR), as well as the giant Nernst effect, are intriguing transport phenomena in Weyl semimetals, which are technically appealing for potential applications in magneto-electric sensors and transverse thermoelectric conversion. The prominent properties are originated from Weyl semimetal states, i.e., the coexistence of electron and hole pockets combined with linear band dispersion. However, previous studies have been focused on small-sized single crystals, rendering the practical applications of Weyl semimetals. Here, it is reported an unsaturated, quasi-linear MR as well as a very large Nernst power factor PF xy in the prepared centimeter-sized and polycrystalline Weyl semimetal NbP. An extraordinary MR of ≈2 × 10 4 % is observed below 60 K with a magnetic field up to 55 T and persists to elevated temperatures. The unusual quasi-linear MR behavior is explained by the theory of classical linear MR arising from structural disorder. The polycrystalline NbP exhibits state-of-the-art PF xy that reaches a maximum value of 74.81 μW cm –1 K –2 at 9 T and 220 K, which is 1.5 times larger than its longitudinal thermoelectric power factor PF xx . Given that polycrystalline Weyl semimetal, NbP is suitable for large-scale production, the results pave the way for its practical applications in magneto-electric sensors and transverse thermoelectric conversion.

Heterogeneous metal nanostructures with excellent plasmonic performance and catalytic activity are urgently needed to realize efficient light-driven catalysis. Herein, we demonstrate the preparation of hollow Au nanobipyramid (NBP)@AgPd nanostructures by employing Au NBP@Ag nanorods as templates. The products could transform from Au NBP@AgPd nanoframes to nanocages, along with the redshift and broadening of the plasmon wavelength. Particularly, the plasmon intensity of these nanostructures remained considerable among the shape evolution process. Based on the selective absorption of CTAB, the Ag atoms on the side surfaces of the Au NBP@Ag nanorods were employed as the sacrificial templates to reduce Pd atoms through galvanic replacement. The reduced Pd and Ag atoms produced through the reduction reaction were preferably co-deposited on the corners and edges at the early stage and later deposited directly on the defect sites of the side facets, as more Ag atoms were released. The discontinued distribution of the Pd atoms gives an opportunity to etch away the Ag atoms in the cores, leading to the formation of hollow Au NBP@AgPd nanostructures after the etching process. It is worth noting that the deposition of the ultrathin AgPd nanoframe had little influence on the plasmonic properties of Au NBPs, as verified by electrodynamic simulations. The Au NBP@AgPd nanoframe showed great photocatalytic activity toward Suzuki coupling reactions under laser irradiation. Taken together, these results suggest that the hot electrons successfully transfer from Au NBP to the AgPd nanoframes to participate in the photocatalytic reactions. This study affords a promising route for the synthesis of anisotropic bimetallic nanostructures with excellent plasmonic performances.

BACKGROUND:Remote secondary neurodegeneration is associated with poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI). Dl-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP) improves PSCI clinically. However, whether it ameliorates PSCI by alleviating secondary neurodegeneration remains uncertain. Nonhuman primates provide more relevant models than rodents for human stroke and PSCI. This study investigated the effects of NBP on PSCI and secondary neurodegeneration in cynomolgus monkeys after permanent left middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO).METHODS:Thirteen adult male cynomolgus monkeys were randomly assigned to sham (n=4), MCAO+placebo (n=5), and MCAO+NBP groups (n=4). The MCAO+placebo and MCAO+NBP groups received saline and NBP injections intravenously, respectively, starting at 6-hour postsurgery for 2 weeks, followed by soybean oil and NBP orally, respectively, for 10 weeks after MCAO. Infarct size was assessed at week 4 by magnetic resonance imaging. Working memory and executive function were evaluated dynamically using the delayed response task and object retrieval detour task, respectively. Neuron loss, glia proliferation, and neuroinflammation in the ipsilateral dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex, thalamus, and hippocampus were analyzed by immunostaining 12 weeks after MCAO.RESULTS:Infarcts were located in the left middle cerebral artery region, apart from the ipsilateral dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex, thalamus, or hippocampus, with no significant difference between the MCAO+placebo and MCAO+NBP group. Higher success in delayed response task was achieved at weeks 4, 8, and 12 after NBP compared with placebo treatments (P<0.05), but not in the object retrieval detour task (all P>0.05). More neurons and less microglia, astrocytes, CD68-positive microglia, tumor necrosis factor-α, and inducible NO synthase were observed in the ipsilateral dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex and thalamus after 12 weeks of NBP treatment (P<0.05), but not in the hippocampus (P>0.05).CONCLUSIONS:Our findings indicate that NBP improves working memory by alleviating remote secondary neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation in the ipsilateral dorsal lateral prefrontal cortex and thalamus after MCAO in cynomolgus monkeys.

Epilepsy is the most prevalent chronic neurological disorder, and its pathological mechanism indicates that an imbalance between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmission leads to neuronal hyperexcitability. Previous studies have suggested that dl-3n-butylphthalide (NBP) regulates the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate in the brains of epileptic mice, however, the mechanisms are unknown. We investigated behavioral and electrophysiological factors in rats using NBP. In an in vivo pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)-induced epileptic seizure animal model, NBP decreased the generalized tonic-clonic seizure (GTCS) severity. In an acute hippocampal slice 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) epilepsy model in vitro , NBP decreased the epileptiform activity and miniature excitatory postsynaptic current (mEPSC) amplitude; there was no change in the miniature inhibitory postsynaptic current (mIPSC) amplitude or frequency. This effect suggested changes in excitatory synaptic transmission, which was altered through postsynaptic GluA2-lacking calcium-permeable AMPA receptors (CP-AMPARs). These findings showed that NBP suppressed epileptiform activity in these epilepsy models and provided the first detailed electrophysiological analysis of the impact of NBP in epilepsy models, which may be employed in future experimental or clinical therapies for patients with epilepsy.
