Solid content of suspension for spray drying was systematically investigated to obtain spherical and dense Nd: granulated particles. The rheological behavior, morphology, size and distribution, apparent and tap densities, and transmittance measurements were used as tools to guide the selection of solid content of suspension. The balanced solid content were 42.0 wt.%. The granulated particles exhibited close to mono-dispersed, spherical and uniform dense aggregates, and mean size was ∼35 μm. Under 60 MPa pressure, the granules were completely crushed without obvious inter-granules void. The homogeneous element distribution and fine microstructure provided high optical quality of Nd:YAG ceramics and the transmittance at 1064 nm reached up to 84.90%.

Neodymium doped yttria (Nd:Y 2 O 3 ) nanopowders were synthesized by a co-precipitation method, and the effect of thermal decomposition behavior of the precursors were studied. Nonlinear and linear heating schedules (NHS and LHS) were adopted during the calcination processes. The results show that as compared to the LHS the NHS can not only lower the crystallization temperature substantially, but also decrease the mean particle size and lighten the particle agglomeration in the obtained Nd:Y 2 O 3 nanopowders. Using the obtained well-dispersed Nd:Y 2 O 3 and commercial Al 2 O 3 powders, transparent Nd:YAG ceramics were fabricated at 1750 °C in vacuum. Better transparency can be obtained by using the Nd:Y 2 O 3 powders calcined in the NHS instead of the LHS.
