A novel Ni/AC catalyst prepared by MOCVD method for hydrogenation of ethyl levulinate to γ-valerolactone

Na Ji,Zhenyu Liu,Xinyong Diao,Jinrong Bao,Zhihao Yu,Chunfeng Song,Qingling Liu,Degang Ma,Xuebin Lu

GVL (γ-valerolactone) is identified as an important biomass platform molecule due to its wide application. In this work, a series of novel supported Ni catalysts with different supports and Ni loading were synthesized via metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) method for the hydrogenation of EL (ethyl levulinate) to GVL. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), nitrogen adsorption/desorption, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to characterize the as-synthesized catalysts. The results showed that the 2 wt.% Ni/AC(MOCVD) presented superior catalytic activity when compared with the catalyst prepared by impregnation method. This behavior is explained in terms of the smaller Ni nanoparticles (4.28 nm) and higher dispersion on 2 wt.% Ni/AC(MOCVD). Among the catalysts, the 2 wt.% Ni/AC catalyst exhibited the best catalytic performance with 99.7 % EL conversion and 79.8 % GVL yield under 1 MPa initial H 2 pressure (measured at room temperature) at 250 °C for 2 h. In addition, the reaction conditions were optimized and the stability of the catalyst were also investigated. The insights gained from this study in the design of high dispersed Ni particles with smaller particle size via MOCVD method will facilitate the metal-catalyzed hydrogenation of EL to GVL.

Adsorptive Removal of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Solution using a Ni-Metal Organic Framework Material

Lei Shi,Liping Hu,Jing Zheng,Min Zhang,Jingli Xu

A specific metal organic framework (MOF) material was synthesized based on Ni(Ac)2 · 4H2O and 1-H-benzimidazole-5-carboxylic acid through hydrothermal method. It was a promising candidate as adsorbent due to its large surface areas, porous structure, ordering and controllable properties. In this paper, it was characterized by XRD, SEM, FTIR, TGA and N2 adsorption isotherm. Meanwhile MOF was treated as adsorbent for absorption of methylene blue. Using this material to remove methylene blue, which is low cost, simple and high efficiency. It shows great potential in removing other dyes and the adsorption rate could reach 85.08%.

Aqueous phase reforming of HTL aqueous phase over Ni/AC catalyst for hydrogen production

Zhuo Wang,Bingshuo Li,Giuseppe Pipitone,Tianhua Yang,Jian Wang,Rundong Li

A significant amount of solid residue (SR) and aqueous phase (AP) by-products are typically generated during the hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of lignocellulosic biomass. AP often contains substantial quantities of harmful organic matter, which can cause environmental pollution if not adequately treated. Conversely, SR can be utilized as a low-grade solid fuel. Realizing the high-value utilization of this type of by-product not only contributes to mitigating environmental pollution but also improves the overall efficiency of biomass conversion and utilization. The objective of this paper is to valorize AP and SR to produce H 2 . SR obtained from the HTL of corn stalks was converted into activated biochar (AC) to prepare a Ni/AC catalyst for H 2 production from AP through aqueous phase reforming (APR). Through CO 2 activation, the specific surface area of AC reached 691 m 2 /g at an activation temperature of 900 °C and a residence time of 3 h. Using 6 wt% Ni/AC (1/60 g catalyst /mL AP ), H 2 yield reached 17.12 μmol/COD at 320 °C over 3 h, approximately 6-fold of the non-catalyzed reaction, while the COD removal reached approximately 38 %. In the gaseous product, the composition of H 2 , CO, CH 4 , CO 2 was 31.69, 1.51, 0.67 and 66.13 vol%, respectively. In view of the adverse effect of the high COD value of AP on APR, reducing ketones, acetylenes and esters may improve the hydrogen production efficiency of the reaction system. Valorization of SR and AP for H 2 production contributes to enhancing the overall energy conversion of biomass HTL.

Catalytic decarbonylation of stearic acid to hydrocarbons over activated carbon-supported nickel

Zihao Zhang,Zhe Chen,Hao Chen,Xin Gou,Kequan Chen,Xiuyang Lu,Pingkai Ouyang,Jie Fu

In this study, the deoxygenation of stearic acid over a series of Ni-based catalysts in the absence of hydrogen and solvents was investigated. Ni/Al2O3, Ni/TiO2, Ni/ZrO2, and Ni/AC (activated carbon) were synthesized using the wetness impregnation method, and Ni/AC showed the best activity for deoxygenation. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, and N2 adsorption–desorption analyses revealed that Ni had an average particle size of about 9.6 nm with good crystallinity, the largest surface area and strong Ni–carrier interactions in Ni/AC. These properties of Ni/AC contributed to its good deoxygenation activity. Ni/AC produced hydrocarbons (71.4% yield) such as heptadecane, heptadecene, aromatics, and cracking paraffins under optimized reaction conditions. Furthermore, it was found that the deoxygenation of stearic acid over Ni/AC in the absence of hydrogen and solvent proceeds mainly via decarbonylation.

Mechanistic investigation of hydrogen production from methanol by aqueous phase reforming over Ni/AC catalyst

Bowen Zhang,Bingshuo Li,Tianhua Yang,Xingping Kai,Jian Wang,Rundong Li

As a clean energy source, hydrogen has attracted wide attention due to its advantages of renewability, high energy density and no pollution. Methanol has a hydrogen content of 12.6 wt%, which is an ideal source for H 2 production. In this study, FactSage software was used to simulate methanol aqueous phase reforming (APR) reaction for H 2 production. Thermodynamic analysis based on the Gibbs free energy minimization method indicated that methanol decomposition required a threshold temperature of 230−240 °C, which was also promoted the water gas shift (WGS) reaction. Based on the optimal H 2 production temperature obtained by simulation, the effect of methanol to water molar ratio on H 2 production was investigated. Under the optimal methanol to water molar ratio, the effects of reaction temperature and Ni/AC catalyst on H 2 production were investigated. It was found that the simulation results were consistent with the experimental results without catalyst under the condition of constant temperature and constant volume. At 240 °C, the methanol to water molar ratio of 4: 3 was beneficial to the forward WGS. The H 2 yield reached a peak of 41.9 mmol/L under the conditions of 240 °C, 10Ni/AC, methanol to water molar ratio of 6: 3 and reaction time of 1 h. Combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculation, the adsorption models of methanol and reaction intermediates (∗CH 2 O, ∗HCOOH) on the oxygen vacancy of C–O bond on Ni/AC were constructed. The mechanism of methanol APR, with methanol decomposition as the primary reaction and WGS as the secondary reaction, offers theoretical support for H 2 production from methanol APR.

Catalytic Decarboxylation and Aromatization of Oleic Acid over Ni/AC without an Added Hydrogen Donor

Zihao Zhang,Zhe Chen,Xin Gou,Hao Chen,Kequan Chen,Xiuyang Lu,Pingkai Ouyang,Jie Fu

Ni/AC (nickel on active carbon) catalysts with different Ni loadings were synthesized and studied for the decarboxylation and aromatization of oleic acid in the absence of H2 or hydrogen donors. Without the use of hydrogen source, the whole deoxygenation process became more economical. Moreover, oleic acid can be saturated using the H2 derived from the production of aromatics, which were also considered as the critical component in aviation biofuels. The structure and properties of the catalysts were investigated using X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption of CH3COOH and CO. The experimental and characterization results revealed that 30% Ni/AC had a higher adsorption capacity of CH3COOH among the other Ni/AC catalysts and highly dispersed and small Ni particles, providing a heptadecane yield of 40.7%. It also contained 13.8% aromatics, which fulfills the requirement of aviation fuels. This Ni/AC catalyst showed good stability even after being reused thrice.

PEG-400 Assisted Preparation of High-Loading Highly Dispersed Ni/AC Catalyst and Its Hydrogenation Performance for DNT

Hongwei Li,Zhibin Liu,Pengju Lei,Jichong Xia,Shoudeng Wang,Guixian Li,Xinhong Zhao,Dong ji

A PEG-400-assisted impregnation-precipitation method synthesized 50 wt% Ni/AC catalysts for dinitrotoluene (DNT) hydrogenation. Optimal PEG-400 dosage (0.4 g) suppressed Ni agglomeration via steric hindrance, yielding uniform 10.9-nm Ni nanoparticles and mesopores (12.24 nm). This enhanced dispersion and mass transfer, achieving complete DNT conversion in 5 min under mild conditions (120 °C, 2.1 MPa H 2 ) with 99.99% TDA selectivity and zero tar. The catalyst retained > 95.5% conversion and > 97.3% selectivity over 10 cycles, demonstrating exceptional stability. PEG's dual role in structural control and pore engineering effectively addresses the dispersion challenges inherent to high-loading catalysts. Graphical PEG-400 directs the synthesis of a 50 wt% Ni/AC catalyst via impregnation-precipitation. Optimal PEG dosage (0.4 g) enables steric hindrance control, yielding uniform 10.9-nm Ni nanoparticles and mesopores. This catalyst achieves complete DNT hydrogenation to TDA in 5 min (120 °C; 2.1 MPa H 2 ) with > 99.99% selectivity and zero tar, retaining high performance over 10 cycles.

Hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol to bio-hydrocarbons in alkaline condition on the Ni/AC catalyst with an “acid-switch”

Yanlin Xu,Yacong Deng,Bin Liu,Zhuoyi Liu,Wenhong Wang,Yuan Pan,Bin Dong,Yichuan Li,Changlong Yin,Hailing Guo,Yongming Chai,Chenguang Liu

Due to the mass manufacturing of global papermaking black liquor, lignin remained in strong-alkaline black liquor is a promising raw material for bulk hydrocarbons production with huge carbon–neutral value. In this work, the alkaline in reactant is proved to inhibit the hydrodeoxygenation reaction of guaiacol severely due to the formation of phenates and cyclohexadienones. A hydroxyl interventional Ni/AC catalyst, on which an “acid-switch” is built with combination of hydroxyl groups and Ni nanoparticles, achieves 4-fold bio-hydrocarbons yield in alkaline condition compared to conventional Ni/AC catalyst. It is implied that hydroxy groups promote the C (sp2) -O reaction route with the aid of activated hydrogen on Ni nanoparticles, while acidic groups on catalyst reduce the size of Ni nanoparticles, thus further enhances the HDO efficiency. It is the first time we propose a reaction mechanism of HDO of guaiacol on Ni-based catalyst in alkaline condition to give insight into HDO reaction of lignin compounds in black liquor. This work gives insights into the relationship between catalyst surface properties and HDO efficiency, and provides a promising approach for green utilization of lignin in alkaline black liquor.

Highly efficient Ni/Ac–Al2O3 catalysts in the dry reforming of methane: influence of acetic acid treatment and Ni loading

Han Xiao,Jiaming Dong,Yimin Zhang,Xiaohua Cao,Yanhong Li,Dedong He,Yongming Luo,Pingyan Wang,Hao Wang

The presence of abundant hydroxyl groups on the surface of Al2O3 can promote the dispersion of Ni species but produce an inactive NiAl2O4 phase at high temperatures. Moreover, the catalysts prepared by the conventional incipient wetness impregnation method lack the sites for the activation of CO2, which leads to coke deposition and thus affects the catalyst activity. The above restricts the utilization of Ni in conventional Ni/Al2O3 catalysts. In this paper, Al2O3 support was pre-treated by acetic acid to selectively remove hydroxyl groups without affecting the coordination environment of Al. Results revealed that the Al2O3 support after hydroxyl removal not only showed moderate metal–support interaction but also produced more sites for the adsorption and activation of the reactant, which significantly improves the utilization of nickel species and the stability of the catalyst. The conversion of CH4 and CO2 at 700 °C was as high as 88% and 90%, respectively, and has an excellent stability of 50 h. This study provides a feasible strategy for the design of highly active methane dry-reforming catalysts.
