Carbon-embedded Ni catalysts for highly efficient CO2 methanation

Zhihao Liu,Yachao Li,Kangzhou Wang,Yan Li,Yurong He,Jie Liang,Jianli Zhang,Tian-sheng Zhao,Noritatsu Tsubaki,Xinhua Gao

The design and preparation of highly active and stable Ni-based catalysts has attracted extensive attention. In this study, a series of embedded Ni@C catalysts were synthesized by a facile sol-gel method. After reduction at 400 °C, the optimized Ni@C-400 catalyst showed excellent performance in CO 2 methanation at a low temperature of 300 °C, with a CO 2 conversion of 74.3 % and good stability for 70 h. The characterization results indicated that after reduction treatment, the carbon species in the precursor were transformed into graphite carbon with more disorder defects. This structure facilitated the anchoring effect of the nickel components in the Ni@C catalyst, thereby forming a distinctive embedded structure that ensured the preservation of the nickel active phase in the catalyst following prolonged reaction. Therefore, the Ni@C catalyst prevented severe sintering and loss of loaded nickel. In addition, the interaction between Ni and C facilitated charge transfer, enhancing the CO 2 activation.

Aqueous upgrading of ethanol to higher alcohol diesel blending and jet fuel precursors over Na-doped porous Ni@C nanocomposite

Quanwang Zhong,Junwei Liao,Qian Zhang,Songbai Qiu,Qingwei Meng,Xiaoping Wu,Tiejun Wang

Developing biomass-derived fuels is a highly competent approach towards the current serious carbon emission issue caused by fossil fuel. The direct upgrading of the aqueous bio-ethanol to higher alcohols as diesel blending and bio-jet fuel precursors showed great potential in techno-economic. In this work, a water-tolerant Na-doped porous carbon encapsulated Ni nanocomposite was fabricated by direct pyrolyzing of Na-containing organic precursors for direct upgrading of aqueous ethanol. The higher alcohols yield of 35.0 C-mol% with C4-C7 selectivity of 51.9% and C8-C16 selectivity of 33.8% were achieved. The C4-C7 alcohols showed the excellent inter-miscibility with diesel at the 0–90% blending proportion. The C8-C16 higher alcohols with iso/n-OH (isomerized/normal alcohol) ratio of 1.86 can be directly used to produce desired jet fuel by hydrodeoxygenation treatment. Experiment and characterization results indicated that the Ni@C catalyst could spontaneously transfer from aqueous phase to the produced oil (higher alcohols) phase. The coupling of phase-transfer and basic sites of Ni@C-NaGlu effectively promoted the secondary C C coupling of higher alcohols to form C8-C16 alcohols. In general, this work provides a novel feasible approach to produce higher alcohol diesel blending and bio-jet fuel precursors from widely available bio-ethanol.

Ni@C nanocatalysts for the highly efficient hydrogenation of maleic anhydride to γ-butyrolactone

Chengliang Wang,Yin Zhang,Haitao Li,Feifan Zhang,Jie Wang,Wei Wei,Yongxiang Zhao

Core-shell Ni@C catalysts with a uniform grain size distribution were synthesised via a simple hydrothermal method followed by pyrolysis carbonisation, and their catalytic performance for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of maleic anhydride (MA) was investigated herein. When the pyrolysis temperature was 350 °C, the resulting Ni@C catalyst (Ni@C-350) possessed abundant Ni/NiO heterostructures and a carbon surface layer. Among the analysed catalysts, Ni@C-350 demonstrated the lowest apparent activation energy for the hydrogenation of C C bonds ( Ea = 34.3 KJ/mol) and C O bonds ( Ea = 65.18 KJ/mol), yielding an MA conversion of 100 % and a γ-butyrolactone (GBL) selectivity of 99.89 % under mild reaction conditions (200 °C, 3 MPa hydrogen pressure, and 0.05 g catalyst). Furthermore, the Ni@C-350 catalyst exhibited high stability, with the yield of GBL above 95 % after five consecutive usage cycles. Ni@C-350 significantly outperformed other previously reported catalysts for the liquid-phase hydrogenation of MA.

Catalytic hydrotreatment of triglycerides and various renewable oils into green diesel over metal–organic frameworks derived Ni@C catalyst

Liu Peng,Xu Junming,Li Jing,Zhou Minghao,Shang Shibin,Zhao Jiaping,Jiang Jianchun

Triglycerides is a kind of natural oil widely existing in animals and plants, and it is also an ideal raw material for preparing biomass liquid fuel. Selectively hydrotreatment of unsaturated glyceride is an important strategy for the production of fuels and chemical feedstocks. In this work, catalytic hydrotreatment of triglycerides over Ni-based catalysts was investigated. Thus, an array of metal–organic frameworks derived Ni@C catalysts synthesized under different temperatures (350 °C, 400 °C, 450 °C) were prepared and applied for hydrotreatment of triglycerides. The highest conversion of triglycerides was 98.9% and the cracking rate could achieve 4.61% over the optimal Ni@C-BTC-400 catalyst in cyclohexane at 320 °C. The physicochemical characterizations were carried out by means of powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electronic microscopy, thermo gravimetric analyzer, N 2 adsorption–desorption, and Raman. Based on the optimal reaction condition (320 °C, 3 h, 3.0 MPa H 2 ), five typical vegetable oils and gutter oils were selected for the hydrotreatment study to investigate the adaptability of Ni@C-BTC-400 catalyst. The result indicated that Ni@C-BTC-400 catalyst performed good universality, and could transform oil raw materials with different fatty acid carbon chain structure to desired alkanes. Furthermore, the optimal Ni@C-BTC-400 catalyst could be carried out in next two consecutive recycling runs and could also be regenerated by H 2 for the following experiments.

High-performance depolymerization of lignin by bimetallic Cu-Ni@C catalysts prepared with MOF as a carrier under mild conditions

Wenqi Zou,Heyu Li,Minghua Liu,Yuancai Lv

In this study, Cu was loaded on the surface of Ni-MOF by impregnation, and significantly improved the catalytic activity on lignin and its derivatives. The characterization showed that the non-noble bimetallic catalyst owned good dispersion, rich acid sites and stable structure was successfully synthesized. The introduced Cu reduced the reduction temperature of Ni, increased the acidity of the catalyst, and thus improved the catalytic performance and product selectivity of the catalyst. Under the mild conditions (120 °C), the conversion percentage of BPE was as high as 89.6 % using isopropyl alcohol as the hydrogen source. When the reaction temperature was 260 °C, the depolymerization percentage of corn cob lignin was 81.12 %, and the yield of phenol monomer could reach 11.46 wt. %. This work may provide an effective strategy for the preparation of efficient bimetallic catalysts for lignin hydrogenolysis .

Effects of alkaline additives on the formation of lactic acid in sorbitol hydrogenolysis over Ni/C catalyst

Junjie Zhang,Fang Lu,Weiqiang Yu,Rui Lu,Jie Xu

Lactic acid is produced as a major byproduct during sorbitol hydrogenolysis under alkaline conditions. We investigated the effects of two different alkaline additives, Ca(OH) 2 and La(OH) 3 , on lactic acid formation during sorbitol hydrogenolysis over Ni/C catalyst. In the case of Ca(OH) 2 , the selectivity of lactic acid was 8.9%. In contrast, the inclusion of La(OH) 3 resulted in a sorbitol conversion of 99% with only trace quantities of lactic acid being detected. In addition, the total selectivity towards the C2 and C4 products increased from 20.0% to 24.5% going from Ca(OH) 2 to La(OH) 3 . These results therefore indicated that La(OH) 3 could be used as an efficient alkaline additive to enhance the conversion of sorbitol. Pyruvic aldehyde, which is formed as an intermediate during sorbitol hydrogenolysis, can be converted to both 1,2-propylene glycol and lactic acid by hydrogenation and rearrangement reactions, respectively. Notably, these two reactions are competitive. When Ca(OH) 2 was used as an additive for sorbitol hydrogenolysis, both the hydrogenation and rearrangement reactions occurred. In contrast, the use of La(OH) 3 favored the hydrogenation reaction, with only trace quantities of lactic acid being formed.

Ni@C catalyzed hydrogenation of acetophenone to phenylethanol under industrial mild conditions in a flow reactor

Shanshan Lin,Jianguo Liu,Longlong Ma

The catalytic hydrogenation of organic substrates containing plenty of unsaturated functional groups is an important step in the industrial preparation of fine chemicals and has always been a hot spot in basic catalysis research. For example, phenylethanol obtained by the preferential hydrogenation of the CO group of acetophenone is a valuable intermediate for the production of spices, flavors, and medicines. Furthermore, as the demand for 1-phenylethanol (PhE) continues to increase, the catalytic hydrogenation of acetophenone (AP) is becoming more and more important. At present, relatively few catalytic systems are used in this reaction as the hydrogenation of acetophenone is a complex multi-step reaction. Enantioselective hydrogenation on heterogeneous catalysts is remarkable due to its inherent operational and economic advantages, such as atom economy. It is one of the most ideal methods as the catalyst is easily separated and recycled. However, the traditional synthesis way in batch reactors usually takes a long time with unsatisfactory conversion which is not conducive to industrialization. Heterogeneous non-precious metal catalysts are advantageous for their implementation in flow reactor systems for industrial applications due to their ease of separation, low cost, and environmental friendliness. Herein, we report the first use of non-noble metal Ni-supported graphene-based catalysts for hydrogenation of acetophenone to phenylethanol with high efficiency in a flow reactor made of 316L stainless steel with a length of 200 mm and an inner diameter of 6 mm which can significantly improve mass and heat transfer. The conversion rate under the optimized reaction conditions can reach 99.14% with a satisfactory selectivity of 97.77% (the conversion and selectivity are in mol%). The magnetic catalyst has a compact structure, and the Ni particles coated with carbon on the surface are uniformly distributed. After 48 hours of uninterrupted continuous experiments, the conversion rate of acetophenone still reached 88.44%. The catalyst has good cyclability, and the Ni-based catalyst after the cycle still maintains high catalytic activity without obvious deactivation, and the catalyst structure remains intact and stable.

Biomass-derived carbon-supported Ni catalyst: an effective heterogeneous non-noble metal catalyst for the hydrogenation of nitro compounds

Qingjie Tang,Ziliang Yuan,Shiwei Jin,Kaiyue Yao,Hanmin Yang,Quan Chi,Bing Liu

There has been a great deal of attention to the development of heterogeneous non-noble metal catalysts for the selective and mild hydrogenation of nitro compounds into primary amines. Herein, a biomass-derived carbon material supported Ni catalyst (Ni/C) was facilely prepared by a one-pot pyrolysis process, and the as-prepared Ni/C catalyst demonstrated a high catalytic activity for the hydrogenation of nitro compounds into primary amines at room temperature. The Ni/C catalyst not only demonstrated a high catalytic activity but also showed a good tolerance to other functional groups. Structurally diverse primary amines were achieved in yields from 92% to 99% within a few hours at room temperature under 5 bar H2. Furthermore, the Ni/C catalyst showed good reusability without the loss of its activity.

In situ synthesis of biomass-derived Ni/C catalyst by self-reduction for the hydrogenation of levulinic acid to γ-valerolactone

Shuqi Fang,Zhibing Cui,Yuting Zhu,Chenguang Wang,Jing Bai,Xinghua Zhang,Ying Xu,Qiying Liu,Lungang Chen,Qi Zhang,Longlong Ma

Herein, we reported in situ synthesis of biomass-derived Ni/C catalyst by self-reduction with pomelo peel. Compared with the conventional method, which includes carbonization , activation, impregnation and reduction, the entire preparation process was simplified to two steps, which was more straightforward. This synthesis method was green as Ni/C can be prepared without any additional chemical and the self-reduction process was realized in N 2 , which can avoid using H 2 thus averting some problems such as storage, transportation and safety of H 2 . Meanwhile, the size and dispersion of Ni particles can be controlled by changing carbonization temperature. The synthesis mechanism of Ni/C catalyst with self-reduction was investigated, which was mainly attributed to the carbon and reducing gas produced during the carbonization process. For the catalytic performance of GVL synthesis, a high yield (94.5%) can be obtained and it exhibited good stability up to 5 cycles without obvious loss of catalytic activity .

Transforming biomass tar into a highly active Ni-based carbon-supported catalyst for selective hydrogenation-transalkylation of guaiacol

Tong Li,Hao Li,Guoming Huang,Xinhui Shen,Siqi Wang,Chunli Li

The development of a carbon-based catalyst for selective transformation of renewable lignin to value-added chemicals is a fascinating chemical upgrade route. In this study, the highly efficient Ni/C catalysts derived from waste biomass tar was fabricated for selective hydrogenation-transalkylation (HTTA) of guaiacol to 1-methyl-1,2-cyclohexanediol. Carbonization temperatures and activators can be used to regulate the contents of oxygen-containing functional groups on carbon surface, which further affect the catalytic performance. Results showed that the Ni/C-K-800 catalyst with KOH as activator and 800 ℃ as carbonization temperature exhibited the excellent catalytic performance (about 100 % conversion) for the guaiacol transformation at 220 ℃, 2 MPa H 2 for 2 h, and the final product could be stably controlled at 1-methyl-1,2-cyclohexanediol. Main reaction pathway of guaiacol over Ni/C catalyst was proposed: 1) conversion of guaiacol to 1-methyl-1,2-cyclohexanediol through transalkylation and hydrogenation of benzene ring; 2) transform of 1-methyl-1,2-cyclohexanediol to cyclohexanol through direct hydrogenolysis. Furthermore, biomass tar-derived carbon support has good resistance towards carbon accumulation on Ni metals. These findings can provide a basis for designing green and efficient catalyst derived from biomass tar for biomass upgrading.

Boosting middle hydroxyl adsorption on lignin-derived carbon loaded MnO–Ni for glycerol conversion to dihydroxyacetone

Haichao Zhou,Jianglin Liu,Dalang Chen,Yanlin Qin,Tiejun Wang,Xueqing Qiu,Xuliang Lin

The electrochemical conversion of glycerol into dihydroxyacetone (DHA) under mild conditions efficiently addresses glycerol surplus, enhancing its economic value. However, DHA production efficiency remains constrained by steric hindrance from secondary hydroxyl groups and sluggish glycerol electro-oxidation reaction (GOR) kinetics in weakly alkaline conditions. Herein, lignin-derived carbon-supported MnO–Ni heterojunction catalyst (MnO–Ni/C) is synthesized via self-assembly precipitation and in situ pyrolysis. The optimized MnO–Ni/C catalyst requires a low potential of 1.58 V to achieve 10 mA cm −2 , 270 mV lower than the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). It attains a 53.37% DHA selectivity with a high production rate of 864.75 mmol m −2 h −1 at 1.8 V. MnO–Ni/C heterostructures modulate the local electronic structure of Ni sites, optimizing glycerol adsorption configuration and enhancing selective adsorption of secondary hydroxyl groups and oxygen active species near the electrode surface. These synergistic effects significantly improve GOR kinetics and DHA production efficiency.

Graphene-like wrapped Ni@C catalyst with magnetic recyclability for selective hydrogenation of nitro-aromatics

Jin Tan,Ling Lan,Yan-ni Wu,Song-bai Qiu

The graphene-like wrapped Ni@C catalysts were facilely synthesized by a modified sol–gel method. Nickel nitrate and citric acid (CA) were adopted as the raw materials to form sol–gel mixture. Under the circumstances, the additive CA were employed not only as a complexing agent but also as a carbon source. It is found that the calcination temperature and the mole ratios between Ni and CA are the key factors affecting the physical property and the catalytic performance of catalysts in the conversion of nitroarenes into corresponding anilines. The results show that the Ni@C-500(1:1) catalyst exhibited the best performance in the hydrogenation of o-chloronitrobenzenes (o-CNB) to o-chloroanilines (o-CAN). The yield of o-CAN was achieved at 100% when o-CNB was completely converted at 40.0 °C under 2.0 MPa H2 for 2.0 h. Furthermore, the Ni@C-500(1:1) catalyst could be separated and recovered easily after reaction by an external magnetic field. The investigated results indicate that the Ni@C-500(1:1) catalyst remained higher activity after using twelve times. More importantly, this kind of catalyst is also active for the selective hydrogenation of other nitroarenes into the corresponding anilines. This new synthetic method may pave a way for producing low-cost Ni@C catalysts on a large scale, which is attractive for industrial anilines applications.
