Reducing the greenhouse gas CO2 in the atmosphere and converting it into high-value-added syngas is regarded as a competitive strategy in line with green and sustainable development. Herein, a series of M/TiO2 (M = Cu, Co, Ni) catalysts were developed for photothermal CO2 reduction with bioethanol, and the synergistic mechanism between photocatalysis and thermocatalysis was deeply investigated. Systematic characteristics and photothermal ethanol dry reforming (EDR) testing results revealed the relevancy between catalytic behavior and microstructure properties of TiO2-supported catalysts. Notably, the Ni/TiO2 catalyst displayed superior catalytic behavior than Cu/TiO2 and Co/TiO2 counterparts, which mainly attributed to their abundant oxygen vacancies and stronger Ni–TiO2 interaction. In addition, both the narrower band gap and higher light absorption ability directly promoted the Ni/TiO2 catalyst possessing outstanding ethanol conversion (94.5%) and controllable H2/CO ratio (0.65) at 450 °C. Furthermore, the relatively less activation energy also determined that the Ni/TiO2 sample possessed the fastest kinetic progression in the EDR process. Therefore, the Ni/TiO2 catalyst exhibited the better photothermal catalytic activity compared with other 2 samples. We anticipate that photothermal synergy would offer good technical guidance to promote the conversion and utilization of greenhouse gas CO2 under relatively low temperature environment.

Hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of microalgae Nannochloropsis (NAS) over various transition metal M/TiO 2 (M = Fe, Co, Ni, Mo, and Mn) was investigated. Ni/TiO 2 was the most effective catalyst to improve the yield and quality of biocrude and the liquefaction conversion. Ni/TiO 2 was characterized by XRD, XRF, and XPS. The research of Effect of reaction temperature on HTL of NAS over Ni/TiO 2 suggested that 300 °C led to a maximum biocrude yield of 48.23% and the highest liquefaction conversion of 89.28%. Adding Ni/TiO 2 catalyst reduced the viscosity and provided more light-fraction in biocrude while brought a slight increase in total acid number (TAN). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis demonstrated that adding Ni/TiO 2 considerably changed the composition of biocrude and the possible pathways were discussed. Reproduction test showed the Ni/TiO 2 has an excellent reproduction ability in HTL of NAS.

Catalytic reduction of CO 2 to high value-added chemicals such as methane is crucial in the development of renewable energy and waste disposal. Photo-thermal CO 2 methanation has been received great attention, because the synergistic effect of photo and thermal lead to efficient CO 2 reduction at low temperature. Herein, we reported the synthesis of Ni nanoparticles (NPs) supported on TiO 2 (Ni-TiO 2 ) derived from MIL-125 (Ti-MOFs) for photo-thermal CO 2 methanation. The nanoparticle sizes and electron densities of metallic Ni, defects and chemical properties, photo-thermal and photo-electric characteristics of the catalysts have been systematically characterized by XRD, TEM, CO 2 /H 2 -TPD, XPS, photoluminescence and photocurrent. For the Ni-TiO 2 , the conversion of CO 2 was 56 % under the full spectrum irradiation (1200 mW/cm 2 ) at 325 °C, which was about 1.8 times of that without light irradiation. The selectivity of methane nearly 99 % with a production rate was 95.7 mmol/(g cat ∙h), which was about 2.7 times of that without light irradiation. Meanwhile, the catalysts showed excellent stability without any activity decay during the four cycles testing (32 h). The main reasons for the high catalytic performance for photo-thermal CO 2 methanation were attributed to the uniform distribution of Ni NPs with synergistic effect of large specific surface area of TiO 2 with abundant moderate strength alkaline sites. In addition, good photo-thermal and photo-electric conversion ability make the catalysts possess more photo-generated charge carriers and reduce its recombination.

The dynamic relationship of TiO 2 crystal phase and strong metal-support interactions (SMSI) of Ni/TiO 2 catalyst was investigated to reveal the induction period of glycerol steam reforming. Comprehensive investigations confirmed that the SMSI between Ni 0 and anatase TiO 2 was formed by anatase TiO 2 encapsulated Ni 0 after H 2 reduction at 500 °C for the Ni/TiO 2 catalyst calcined at 500 °C (Ni/Ti-500R), which inhibited the contact of Ni 0 active sites with reactants and led to the low hydrogen yield in the initial stage of the reaction. Interestingly, the dynamic conversion of anatase to rutile during the GSR process at 600 °C caused the TiO 2 overlayers on the Ni 0 particles to gradually fade, exposing more Ni 0 sites, resulting in a gradual increase in hydrogen yield to 5.93 mol H2 /mol glycerol . In addition, Ni/Ti-500R with a dynamic SMSI inhibited Ni 0 particles sintering and encapsulated carbon deposition, resulting in relatively better stability (21 h) after induction period. In comparison, the designed Ni/TiO 2 catalyst calcined at 600 °C (Ni/Ti-600R) with rutile TiO 2 as the main component inhibited the formation of the classical SMSI, even after 600 °C H 2 reduction, and no excessive TiO 2 encapsulated Ni 0 particles were observed, so no obvious induction period occurred. This study provides new insights into the relationship of SMSI with crystal phases and the induction period in multiphase catalysis, also a new strategy for designing efficient catalysts.
