Effect of Lewis and Brønsted acidity in Ni/ZSM-5 on catalytic reductive etherification of furfural and alcohols

Mengxue Song,Chonghao Qiu,Pengfei Ma,Jiawei Zhong,Zhuohan Zhang,Weiping Fang,Wenjing Song,Jianqiang Fan,Weikun Lai

Reductive etherification is an attractive and practical strategy to convert bio-platform compounds into valuable chemicals. In directed synthesis of furfuryl ethers, reductive etherification of bioderived furfurals is still challenging due to the complexity of catalytic reaction . Herein, reductive etherification of furfural with alcohol was investigated over Ni/ZSM-5 catalyst, which found that Si/Al ratios in ZSM-5 played an important role on the catalytic performance. For Ni/ZSM-5 with Si/Al ratio of 50, 80.9% yield of furfuryl ether at 90.8% conversion of furfural was achieved under the condition of 2 MPa H 2 and 180 °C for 3 h in isopropanol. The catalyst exhibited superior stability and recyclability during the consecutive cycle run. Catalysts characterization demonstrated that both acidic properties and furfural adsorption were influenced by the Si/Al ratios in Ni/ZSM-5, which correlated to the reaction route and catalytic performance. Lewis acid sites enhanced furfural hydrogenation into furfuryl alcohol, while Brønsted acid sites on ZSM-5 effectively catalyzed sequential etherification of furfuryl alcohol to furfuryl ether. Under optimization conditions, various furfuryl ethers could be obtained with yields above 80% over Ni/ZSM-5 catalyst in different primary alcohols, demonstrating the general versatility of the approach. Our findings offered opportunities to develop an efficient furfuryl ethers synthesis method .

Catalytic pyrolysis of biomass to aromatics over bifunctional Ni/ZSM-5 catalysts assembled on rice husk-derived silica platform

Bin Chen,Shui Yang,Longmei Shang,Yiling Wu,Youting Wang,Jian Tian,Jiale Huang,Xiaodong Zhang,Qingbiao Li,Guowu Zhan

Biomass resources can be converted to biochemicals via the catalytic pyrolysis process, but conventional catalysts often suffer from severe deactivation due to coke formation. Here, a ternary Ni/bio-Z5 catalyst was constructed by integrating ZSM-5 and Ni components on a porous bio-SiO2 platform derived from rice husk. The Ni/bio-Z5 achieved 76% aromatic selectivity for the catalytic pyrolysis of soybean oil, corresponding to a space-time yield as high as 154.8 garom · h−1 · gcata−1. It is confirmed that the bio-SiO2 platform shortened the surface diffusion path of aromatics by co-diffusion, which then inhibited coke formation and significantly improved the catalyst stability. Moreover, the atomically dispersed Ni on ZSM-5 effectively promotes the aromatization of C2=-C6= by enhancing adsorption and acting as an oligomerization center for isoalkyl carbenium ions. The coupling of deoxygenation and aromatization reactions promotes the enhancement of aromatic selectivity through the formation of methyl-substituted cyclopentenone that can be readily converted to aromatics.

Catalytic co-pyrolysis of cabbage waste and plastics with Ni/ZSM-5 catalysis to produce aromatic-rich oil

Yingna Li,Muhammad Sajjad Ahmad,Mudassir Hussain Tahir,Maryam Bashir,Arif Muhammad Khan,Rana Muhammad Irfan,Imran Riaz Malik,Boxiong Shen

This study investigates the selective production of aromatics through the co-pyrolysis of cabbage waste and plastics followed by catalytic reforming with Ni-modified ZSM-5. Co-pyrolysis significantly improves the inflection point (a parameter for determining thermal stability) to 251.3 °C from 232.7 °C. This process also enhances the relative yield of olefins and phenols , which are precursors for aromatic production to 25.46 and 17.23 respectively, up from 13.87 to 12.05. Furthermore, catalytic pyrolysis elevates the relative yield of aromatics to 53.4, as confirmed by Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Thermogravimetric-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) analyses. GC-MS confirms the enhanced formation of valuable chemical precursors via co-pyrolysis such as phenols and olefines to 18.67 % and 22.13 % leading to a 63.81 % selective yield of aromatics in the final oil with 10Ni/ZSM-5. Ni modification of ZSM-5 is influential in decreasing PAH formation (7.26 % from 20.37 %), indicating that this two-step process is an effective method for transforming waste into high-quality bio-oil with enriched aromatic content.

Effect of calcium addition in plasma catalysis for toluene removal by Ni/ZSM-5 : Acidity/basicity, catalytic activity and reaction mechanism

Weicheng Xu,Bingxu Chen,Xueding Jiang,Feng Xu,Xin Chen,Limin Chen,Junliang Wu,Mingli Fu,Daiqi Ye

The effect of Ca modification on the Ni/ZSM-5 catalyst for efficient toluene oxidation was studied in a plasma-catalytic system. The Ni/ZSM-5 and Ca-Ni/ZSM-5 catalysts were prepared by a wet impregnation method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Pyridine-FTIR spectroscopy and temperature programmed desorption of ammonia (NH 3 -TPD). Among the catalysts tested, the Ca-Ni/ZSM-5 sample showed the best potential for toluene conversion (90.2%) and CO 2 selectivity (70.7%). Pyridine-FTIR spectra and NH 3 -TPD results proved that the introduction of Ca and Ni onto ZSM-5 caused a decrease in the strong and weak acidic sites. In addition, gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC-MS) result showed that the Ca-Ni/ZSM-5 catalyst reduced the production of undesirable byproducts (such as p-nitrotoluene and methyl benzoate). Calcium in the Ni/ZSM-5 system influenced the acidity and other surface characteristic of the catalyst, as well as directly impacting the reactive plasma species and the intermediates. Finally, possible reaction mechanisms in the plasma catalysis of toluene were also proposed.
