The CO 2 methanation is an important process in coal-to-gas, power-to-gas and CO 2 removal for spacecraft. Recently, metal-organic framework (MOF) derivatives have been demonstrated as high-performance catalysts for CO 2 upgrading processes. However, due to the high costs and low stability of MOF derivatives, it still remains challenge for the development of alternative synthesis methods avoiding MOF precursors. In this work, we present the sol-gel method for loading Ni-MOF to silica support in two-steps. Upon modifying the procedure, a more simplified one-step sol-gel method has been developed. Furthermore, the obtained Ni/SiO 2 catalyst still exhibits great catalytic performance with a CO 2 conversion of 77.2% and considerable CH 4 selectivity of ~100% during a stability test for 52 h under a low temperature of 310 °C and high GHSV of 20,000 mL·g −1 ·h −1 . Therefore, this work provides a ground-breaking direct strategy for loading MOF derived catalysts, and might shed a light on the preparation of highly dispersed Ni/SiO 2 catalyst.

In this study, we prepared core-shell structured Ni@SiO2catalysts using chemical precipitation and modified Stöber methods. The obtained Ni@SiO2samples exhibited excellent catalysis performances, including high CO conversion of 99.0% and CH4yield of 89.8%. Moreover, Ni@SiO2exhibited excellent catalytic stability during a 100 h lifetime test, which was superior to that of the Ni/SiO2catalyst. The prepared samples were characterized using a series of techniques, and the results indicated that the catalytic performance for syngas methanation reaction of the Ni@SiO2sample was markedly improved owing to its nanoreactor structure. The strong interaction between the Ni core and the SiO2shell effectively restrained the growth of particles, and the deposition of C species. Keywords:syngas methanation;Ni@SiO2;anti-carbon deposition;catalytic stability

Controlling the oxygen-free product selectivity in catalytic hydrodeoxygenation is essential for producing high quality fuels from coal- and biomass-derived crude liquids. A series of boron-doped Ni/SiO 2 catalysts were prepared for the efficient hydrodeoxygenation of dibenzofuran as a model compound. Boron doping significantly promoted the transformation of 2-cyclohexylcyclohexanol, which was accumulated as the main oxygen-containing intermediate compound on the pristine Ni/SiO 2 catalyst, to the target products bicyclohexane and its isomer cyclopentylmethylcyclohexane. Characterization results show that boron doping increases Ni dispersion, modifies the electronic properties of Ni sites and in situ generates Brønsted acid sites by H 2 spillover to boron oxides. The reduced Ni particle size improves the rates of dibenzofuran hydrogenation and 2-cyclohexylcyclohexanol dehydration. Electron-deficient Ni and boron oxides as the Lewis acid sites enhance the adsorption of 2-cyclohexylcyclohexanol. Furthermore, the in situ generated Brønsted acid sites favor the dehydration of 2-cyclohexylcyclohexanol, which gives the Ni-5B/SiO 2 catalyst a better deoxygenation activity than the mechanical mixture of equal amounts of 5B/SiO 2 and Ni/SiO 2 , as well as the one with a smaller Ni particle size of 3.8 nm.

Climate warming caused by the yearly rise of CO 2 emissions has posed a great challenge to the survival and development of human beings. In this study, the active component Ni was combined with mesoporous silica (SiO 2 ) to construct a highly dispersed Ni composite silicon-based catalyst (Ni x /Si), which was introduced into the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) system for the conversion of CO 2 . The XRD and FTIR analyses confirmed that Ni was successfully introduced into the SiO 2 carrier and the SEM results showed that the Ni elements were uniformly distributed. BET and TGA results revealed large specific surface area, stable mesoporous structure, and high thermal stability of the prepared Nix/Si. Further investigation of DBD-coupled Ni x /Si performance for CO 2 conversion showed significant variations based on different Ni loadings, with optimal CO 2 conversion rate, CO yield, and energy efficiency achieved at 3% Ni loading, which increased by 121.8%, 101.5%, and 102.4% respectively compared to the SiO 2 support. During the process of reducing CO 2 , the combination of Ni x /Si and DBD exhibited synergistic effects, with Ni 0 playing a crucial role in the CO 2 reduction. The introduction of Ni x /Si enhances charge transfer in the discharge region, improves CO 2 adsorption, and reduces the dissociation energy of CO 2 bonds. The DBD-coupled Ni x /Si developed by this study offers several advantages including low energy consumption, simple operation, and high efficiency, making it a promising solution for CO 2 treatment.

Abstract Three typical methods, subsequent coating, co-impregnation and sequential impregnation, were employed to investigate the effect of introduction methodologies for CeO 2 -promoted Ni/SiO 2 catalysts. The CeO 2 @Ni/SiO 2 catalyst prepared with the subsequent coating method was found to exhibit the best initial activity and superior long-term stability in CO 2 reforming of methane. Comparative characterizations documented that small Ni size and intimate Ni–CeO 2 contact were generated on the CeO 2 @Ni/SiO 2 catalyst, leading to excellent reforming activity. In addition, pronounced redox property and strong surface basicity were created on the CeO 2 @Ni/SiO 2 catalyst, resulting in exceptional coke resistance and thus superior long-term stability. This work unravels the impact of various introduction methods on the catalyst structure, which would help design robust nanocomposite catalysts with outstanding catalytic performance. A series of Ni/SiO 2 –Al- x catalysts ( x is the initial mass ratio of SiO 2 to Al(NO 3 ) 3 ) with different aluminum contents was prepared by impregnation method using nickel nitrate as the Ni source. The prepared Ni/SiO 2 –Al- x catalysts were characterized by XRD, BET, TPR, TEM, XPS, NH 3 -TPD, and Py-FTIR methods. Taking m -cresol as a model compound, the effects of aluminum content and reaction conditions on the HDO performance were investigated. Results showed that addition of appropriate amount of aluminum can generate acid sites and improve the metal Ni dispersion by increasing the surface area of catalyst. Furthermore, the selectivity to deoxygenated methyl-cyclohexane product over aluminum modified Ni/SiO 2 –Al- x catalysts increased significantly as compared to that of Ni/SiO 2 , which confirmed the importance of aluminum addition on the dehydration of 3-methyl-cyclohexanol to methyl-cyclohexane. Among the prepared Ni/SiO 2 –Al- x catalysts, the Ni/SiO 2 –Al-5 catalyst exhibits the best HDO performance. A 100% m -cresol conversion with the selectivity to MCH of 100% was achieved under the conditions of T = 250°C, p = 2 MPa, t = 75 min with catalyst (mg)/ m -cresol solution = 2.

Nickel-based catalysts are widely used in hydrogenation of varied types of organics. However, the nickel catalyst, like Ni/SiO 2 , lacks selectivity for hydrogenation of C=C and C=O. This is undesirable in some scenarios, such as conversion of biomass-derived furfuryl alcohol (FA) to cyclopentanone (CPO), a fine chemical, in which the C=C in furan ring of FA needs to be retained. In this study, introduction of sulfur species to Ni/SiO 2 catalyst via loading NiSO 4 was adopted to inhibit hydrogenation of furan ring in FA, aiming to achieve conversion of FA to CPO via ring-opening route. The results indicated that NiSO 4 was reduced to Ni x S y , which further reacted with metallic Ni, forming Ni 3 S 2 species and introducing the acidic sites with high-strength. The co-existence of Ni x S y and metallic Ni species effectively hindered hydrogenation of furan ring in FA, reducing tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFA) yield from 97% over Ni/SiO 2 to 0 over the NiS x /SiO 2 catalysts and shifting the major product to CPO. Nonetheless, the enhanced acidic sites along with the introduction of NiSO 4 catalyzed polymerization of reaction intermediates, competing with the production of CPO. The acidic sites, however, facilitated hydrogenolysis of vanillyl alcohol to selectively produce (yield: 94.3%) in hydrogenation of vanillin. Characterization of hydrogenation of FA with in-situ Diffuse Reflectance Infrared Fourier Transform Spectroscopy (DRIFTS) technique suggested the oxygen-containing functionalities in FA, instead of furan ring, could strongly adsorb on the NiS 10 /SiO 2 catalyst, enhancing rearrangement reaction to form CPO while suppressing hydrogenation of the furan ring.

Supported Ni and Ir nanocatalysts have been used in CO2 dry reforming of methane (DRM); however, their fast deactivation limited further applications. In this research, we introduced NiO nanoparticles (NPs) on the SiO2 surface ahead of the addition of the Ir source for the bimetallic Ir–Ni/SiO2 catalyst. The homogeneous NiO NPs provide finite spaces to prohibit the agglomeration of Ir NPs under H2 reduction. The Ir–Ni/SiO2 catalyst was obtained with ultrasmall bimetallic NPs (1.4 nm) uniformly distributed on the SiO2 surface. Owing to the synergistic effects within the bimetal, the catalytic performance on the fabricated bimetallic catalyst into the DRM reaction is significantly enhanced, with 1.2 times higher than the sum of the Ir and Ni monometallic catalysts. Besides, the side reaction of the reverse water–gas shift reaction is effectively suppressed, and the stability is also improved. This facile strategy provides another approach to fabricate ultrasmall and homogeneous bimetallic catalysts for efficient storage and conversion of fossil fuels.

Core/shell/shell-structured Ni/SiO 2 /polyaniline hexagonal nanoflakes possessing in-plane [111] easy magnetization ( M ) and out-of-plane interfacial polarization ( P ) are synthesized by a three-step liquid chemical method , and their physicochemical properties and growth mechanism are investigated. Three characteristic types of paraffin-bonded ring-shaped nanoflake composites having random (R), vertical–horizontal (V–H), and horizontal–vertical (H–V) orientations of the orthogonal M and P to their two major surfaces are prepared by randomly, vertically, and horizontally aligning the nanoflakes in the paraffin matrix under a magnetic alignment and thermal curing process . The composites are evaluated experimentally and theoretically in the L–Ku (1–18 GHz) bands of microwaves in order to investigate the orientation effect of the orthogonal M and P on their microwave electromagnetic properties . The in-plane M in the H–V-oriented composite and the out-of-plane P in the V–H-oriented composite, which are parallel to the effective magnetic and electric field vectors of incident microwaves, result in a significant enhancement in permeability with multiple magnetic natural resonances and an obvious improvement in permittivity in comparison with other composites, respectively. The observations agree with the theoretical predictions based on the Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation and Bruggeman's effective medium theory for permeability and the Debye's polarization theory for permittivity. As a result, the H–V-oriented composite achieves the best microwave electromagnetic impedance matching and absorption with a broad absorbing bandwidth of 4 GHz, a wide thickness range of 7–10 mm, and a minimal reflection loss of −41.5 dB in the Ku (12–18 GHz) band.

Metal sintering and carbon deposition are acknowledged to be the foremost critical issues in the important energy storage process of high temperature Dry Reforming of Methane (DRM). For that process, so-called “core-shell catalysts” have exhibited outstanding catalytic performance. However, the intrinsic confined geometric space of the host core-shell structure not only inevitably limits the ability of the catalyst system to facilitate the critical rapid infusion and diffusion of reacting gases, but also enhances the accompanying conversion of carbon intermediates to inert, catalyst-deactivating carbonaceous deposits under high-space-velocity conditions. Herein, we present a study highlighting the importance of the inner cavity space, now of a quasi-zero-dimensional, tubular, yolk-shell structured Ni@SiO 2 nanocapsule catalyst, in the DRM process. The tubular yolk-shell structured Ni@SiO 2 nanocapsule catalysts having controlled inner cavities (5.0–13.0 nm × 5.0–50.0 nm dimensions) were synthesised via a water-in-oil micro-emulsion method by employing different aging times (i.e. 3 h, 6 h and 12 h). Compared with corresponding Ni@SiO 2 nanosphere catalysts, the tubular nanocapsule catalysts displayed both excellent catalyst activity, stability, and (metal) anti-sintering ability with, equally important, negligible carbon deposition during the operating DRM process under high space velocity conditions (60 L g −1 h −1 ), most relevant for application in real industrial processes.

This work proposes a facile route to fabricate Ni/SiO2 nanocomposite catalysts for dry reforming of methane, in which the hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate starts and then proceeds around the in situ-formed nickel hydroxide colloids that are stabilized by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide during precipitation using ammonium hydroxide. The average size of Ni nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in a macroporous silica matrix monotonically increases as the initial Ni2+ concentration increases from 0.05 to 0.2 M in the precipitation step, and it is around 6 nm when the latter is 0.2 M. At 750 °C and 1 atm, the reverse water gas shift reaction appears to be more important on small Ni particles than on large ones, and reforming stability over large particles (6 nm) is higher than that of small ones (4 and 4.9 nm). The reforming catalyst with the largest Ni NPs exhibits excellent stability at a weight hourly space velocity of 60 L gcat–1 h–1: methane conversion maintains at ∼88% and H2/CO molar ratio marginally fluctuates around 0.97 during the 100 h of continuous operation. After the stability test, the size of Ni NPs slightly increases but the pattern of spatial confinement remains intact. Moreover, the amount of catalytic coke in the spent catalyst is around 0.18 wt %. However, no carbonaceous materials are detected in the spent one by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Thus, the proposed method may be used to prepare other nickel-based catalysts for hydrocarbon catalytic transformations involving sintering and/or coking.

Superamphiphobic coatings have shown great potential in many fields such as with their anti-corrosion, high-temperature resistance, self-cleaning, and drag reduction properties. However, due to the poor stability of their coatings, it is difficult to apply them on a large scale. In this paper, two kinds of SiO2particles and nickel were co-deposited on the surface of steel to construct a micro/nano dual-scale structure by composite electrodeposition. The surface of the coating was then fluorinated with the low-surface-energy material 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane (AC-FAS) to prepare a Ni-SiO2superamphiphobic coating. The coating has a water contact angle of 159° and an oil contact angle of 151°. The effect of nanoparticle concentration on the wettability and surface morphology of the coating was systematically studied. Comparative experiments revealed that the optimal micro/nanoparticle concentrations were 8 g/L of 20 nm SiO2and 2 g/L of 1 μm SiO2. This preparation method greatly improves the corrosion resistance, wear resistance, chemical stability, and high-temperature resistance of the coating.
