Microstructure and hydrogen storage properties of porous Ni@Mg

Y.J. Chai,Z.Y. Liu,H.N. Gao,Z.Y. Zhao,N. Wang,D.L. Hou

A nanoporous Ni layer on the surface of Mg was prepared utilizing the reduction reaction of Ni 2+ by Mg in NiCl 2 .12H 2 O solution. XRD result showed that the product was composed of cubic Ni, hexagonal Mg and little Mg(OH) 2 . SEM and TEM results suggested that a nanoporous Ni layer microencapsulated Mg and formed Ni@Mg. The specific surface area of Ni@Mg formed in this reaction was 65.3 m 2 /g. Hydrogen uptake increased as the temperature increased. Moreover, Ni@Mg showed a reversible hydriding-dehydriding process without formation of the stable hydrides, which indicated that the nanoporous Ni layer on the surface of Mg showed an obvious physisorption characteristics rather than hydrogen storage behavior of Mg.

Fe–Ni Layered Double Hydroxide Arrays with Homogeneous Heterostructure as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Overall Water Splitting

Kuangfu Huang,Ruohao Dong,Chao Wang,Wen Li,Hongxia Sun,Baoyou Geng

Design and synthesis of highly efficient, stable, and low-cost catalysts have a crucial role in the study of electrolytic water. In this work, a novel Fe–Ni layered double hydroxide (LDH) material with homogeneous heterostructures is successfully synthesized by a two-step hydrothermal method. Compared with the ordinary Fe–Ni LDH arrays prepared by one step, this structure has a rougher surface, so it has a more extensive active area, thus providing more active sites. Due to the synergistic effect of different elements and more exposure of active sites, the catalytic effect of this material for water splitting is outstanding. The post-optimized FeNi@FeNi electrode exhibits extraordinary OER (oxygen evolution reaction) and HER (hydrogen evolution reaction) performance with OER overpotentials of 193, 231, and 306 mV and HER overpotentials of 127, 173, and 253 mV when the current density is 10, 20, and 50 mA·cm–2, respectively. The improved electrolytic water performance reveals that the design of homogeneous heterostructures is maybe an alternative route to exploit high-efficiency catalysts and promote the application of nonprecious metal catalytic materials.

Core-shell heterostructured Ni(OH)2@activation Zn-Co-Ni layered double hydroxides electrode for flexible all-solid-state coaxial fiber-shaped asymmetric supercapacitors

Xiaoshuang Zhou,Bing Chen,Wei Wang,Liang Liu,Xiankai Li,Long Chen,Yanhui Li,Yanzhi Xia,Lijie Ci

The increasing requirements for wearable and portable electronics are driving the interests of high performance fiber supercapacitor. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) is broadly used in electrode materials, owing to the adjustability of components and the unique lamellar structure. However, limited active sites and poor electrical conductivity hinder its applications. Herein, the core–shell heterostructured Ni(OH) 2 @activation Zn-Co-Ni layered double hydroxides (Ni(OH) 2 @A-ZnCoNi-LDH) electrode was fabricated by loading pseudocapacitance material on the A-ZnCoNi-LDH to improve the electrochemical performance. Significantly, benefits from the synergistic effect of the multi-metal ions and the core–shell heterostructure, the electrodes demonstrated a capacitance of 2405 mF·cm −2 at 1 mA·cm −2 . Furthermore, Ni(OH) 2 @A-ZnCoNi-LDH was used as the core electrode and carbon nanotube (CNT) film coated with Fe 2 O 3 @reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was wrapped around the core electrode to assemble coaxial fiber asymmetric supercapacitor, which illustrated an ultrahigh energy density of 177.7 µWh·cm −2 at 0.75 mW·cm −2 . In particular, after consecutive charging and discharging 7000 cycles, the capacitance retention of the device was 95 %, indicating the excellent cycling stability. Furthermore, the device with high flexibility can be woven into textiles in different shapes. The fabricated device has an excellent development prospect as an energy source in wearable electronic devices.

Enhanced Degradation of Reactive Brilliant Blue KN-R via Peroxymonosulfate Activation Facilitated by Mn-Ni-layered Double Hydroxides

Liu Jingliang,An Fengxia,Zheng Di,Li Chao,Sun Jingya

In this study, Mn-Ni-layered double hydroxides (Mn-Ni-LDHs) were synthesized and utilized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for degrading reactive brilliant blue KN-R (KN-R) in aqueous solutions. The characterization results demonstrate that the catalysts synthesized are layered structures, and the surface area is 169.3 m 2 /g. The Mn-Ni-LDHs exhibited significant efficiency effective for the degradation of KN-R via activating PMS, achieving 96.5% degradation of KN-R within 90 min under optimal conditions (0.20 g/L catalyst, 10 mM PMS, pH=10.0 and 25°C). The reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.0351 min -1 , and the apparent activation energy was calculated to be 11.94 kJ/mol. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and free radical scavenging experiments identified ·O 2 − and 1 O 2 as the primary reactive species involved in the reaction for KN-R degradation. The proposed catalytic mechanism suggests that redox cycling between Mn 4+ /Mn 3+ and Ni 3+ /Ni 2+ within Mn-Ni-LDHs plays a critical role in enhancing PMS activation, thereby promoting the continuous generation of active oxygen species.

Site-specific metal-support interaction to switch the activity of Ir single atoms for oxygen evolution reaction

Wei Jie,Tang Hua,Sheng Li,Wang Ruyang,Fan Minghui,Wan Jiale,Wu Yuheng,Zhang Zhirong,Zhou Shiming,Zeng Jie

The metal-support interactions (MSI) could greatly determine the electronic properties of single-atom catalysts, thus affecting the catalytic performance. However, the typical approach to regulating MSI usually suffers from interference of the variation of supports or sacrificing the stability of catalysts. Here, we effectively regulate the site-specific MSI of Ir single atoms anchored on Ni layered double hydroxide through an electrochemical deposition strategy. Cathodic deposition drives Ir atoms to locate at three-fold facial center cubic hollow sites with strong MSI, while anodic deposition drives Ir atoms to deposit onto oxygen vacancy sites with weak MSI. The mass activity and intrinsic activity of Ir single-atom catalysts with strong MSI towards oxygen evolution reaction are 19.5 and 5.2 times that with weak MSI, respectively. Mechanism study reveals that the strong MSI between Ir atoms and the support stimulates the activity of Ir sites by inducing the switch of active sites from Ni sites to Ir sites and optimizes the adsorption strength of intermediates, thereby enhancing the activity.
