Highly Dispersed Ni–Fe Alloy Catalysts on MgAl2O4 Derived from Hydrotalcite for Direct Ethanol Synthesis from Syngas

Qiang Liu,Jiaming Wang,Kang An,Siran Zhang,Guilong Liu,Yuan Liu

In view of the dual active sites mechanism of direct ethanol synthesis and the excellent catalytic performance of bimetallic catalysts, a series of Ni–Fe alloy catalysts with different Ni/Fe molar ratios derived from layered double hydroxides (LDHs) precursors are synthesized. During the calcination and reduction process of LDHs precursors, the Ni–Fe alloy is obtained, and attributed to all the elements being evenly dispersed at the atomic level in the LDHs precursors; meanwhile, a strong interaction between Ni–Fe alloy and MgAl 2 O 4 support exists. As a result, Ni–Fe alloy nanoparticles are highly dispersed on the MgAl 2 O 4 surface. The high CO adsorption ability on the Ni–Fe alloy and synergism catalysis between Ni and Fe result in excellent catalytic activity and high selectivity to ethanol on the bimetallic Ni–Fe alloy. In addition, the strong antisintering ability and stable alloy structure bring about a good catalytic stability. This research proposes a new catalytic system for direct ethanol synthesis from syngas.

Enhanced Reliability of Ni-Fe Alloys Supported SOFCs with Ex-Situ Sintered La0.8Sr0.2MnO3−δ Coated Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3–δ Cathode

Kai Li,Yafeng Jin,Wenming Gao,Shoucai Xue,Ming Zhang

A critical issue for massive production of metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell is cathode processing due to the contradicting of the metal support and the cathode with regard to the sintering atmosphere. Herein, LSM-BSCF (La0.8Sr0.2MnO3-δ coated Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ) cathodes on Ni-Fe alloys supported SOFCs (NF-SOFCs) are fabricated by an ex situ sintering approach and electrochemical evaluation in humidified H2 fuel. The ex situ sintering of cathodes on NF-SOFCs are performed at 1050 °C in air with metal oxide support consisted of NiO and 10 at% Fe2O3, and then the oxide support is reduced in situ into Ni-Fe alloys during testing. Cross-section microstructure analysis shows clear evidence that each layer is well adhered to each other after reduction and the suitable microstructure of ex situ sintered cathode is observed after sintering at 1050 °C. In the single-cell test, a higher peak power density is achieved for NF-SOFC with ex situ sintered LSM-BSCF in comparison with in situ sintered cells, revealing a beneficial effect of ex situ sintered cathode on cell performance. The durability measurement and post-test analysis confirm the sufficient adherence and mechanical stability between ex situ sintered LSM-BSCF cathode and GDC (Ce0.9Gd0.1O1.95) electrolyte. The successful electrochemical characterizations of NF-SOFCs with ex situ sintered LSM-BSCF cathode confirm the applicability of the novel sintering procedure.

Preparation of Fine-Grained W-Ni-Fe Alloys by Using W Nanopowders

Li Zhi-Bo,He Kai,Zhang Guo-Hua,Chou Kuo-Chih

The present study utilized W nanopowders (prepared by a two-stage reduction process consisting of steps of carbothermic pre-reduction and hydrogen deep reduction) to produce fine-grained 90W-7Ni-3Fe and 93W-4.9Ni-2.1Fe alloys. The effects of sintering temperature [in a range of 1573 K to 1723 K (1300 °C to 1450 °C)] and time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of W-Ni-Fe alloys were studied in detail. The microstructures of the prepared alloys at 1573 K and 1673 K (1300 °C and 1400 °C) indicated that the grain sizes of W grains are < 5 μ m. However, the grain size dramatically increases to > 5 μ m after sintering for > 60 minutes at 1723 K (1450 °C). The observation shows the as-sintered alloys with different holding times exhibit different fracture modes. With increasing holding time, the hardness of two alloys first increases and then decreases at the same sintering temperature. It is also concluded that the bending strength of alloys increases with the increase of sintering temperature. The maximum hardness of 381 and 393.6 HV was obtained after sintering at 1573 K (1300 °C) for 60 minutes for 90W-7Ni-3Fe and 93W-4.9Ni-2.1Fe alloys, respectively, while the highest bending strength of 1381.4 and 1278.8 MPa could be achieved at 1673 K (1400 °C) for 120 minutes. The excellent mechanical properties of W-Ni-Fe alloys could be attributed to the grain refinement strengthening.

Depolymerization of lignin via a non-precious Ni–Fe alloy catalyst supported on activated carbon

Yongxiang Zhai,Chuang Li,Guangyue Xu,Yanfu Ma,Xiaohao Liu,Ying Zhang

Lignin primarily composed of methoxylated phenylpropanoid subunits is an abundant biomass that can be used to produce aromatics. Herein, a series of non-precious bimetallic Ni–Fe/AC catalysts were prepared for efficiently depolymerizing lignin. When organosolv birch lignin was used to determine the efficiency of the catalysts in methanol solvent, the Ni1–Fe1/AC (the ratio of Ni and Fe was 1 : 1) achieved the highest total yield of monomers (23.2 wt%, mainly propylguaiacol and propylsyringol) at 225 °C under 2 MPa H2 for 6 h. From GPC analysis, it is also proved that lignin was efficiently depolymerized. The Ni–Fe alloy structure was formed according to XRD, HRTEM, H2-TPR and XPS characterization. Based on the model compounds’ tests, the Ni1–Fe1/AC catalyst showed high efficiency in ether bond cleavage without hydrogenation of aromatic rings which could be attributed to the synergistic effect of Ni and Fe on the alloy structure. The total yield of monomers by using the Ni1–Fe1/AC catalyst reached 39.5 wt% (88% selectivity to PG and PS) when birch wood sawdust was used as the substrate.

Ping Li,Pu Yang,Fei Liu,Wanxiong Xiao,Fei Yan,Tian Gan,Kun Zhao,Dong Fu

Solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) is considered as a high energy-efficient CO 2 conversion method and a promising technology to achieve carbon neutralization. Thus, in this work, the reduced Co or Ni doped Pr 0.4 Sr 0.6 Fe 0.9 Mo 0.1 O 3 perovskite oxides are used as the cathode of SOEC. After reduction, Co-Fe alloy nanoparticles are in situ exsolved from Pr 0.4 Sr 0.6 Co 0.2 Fe 0.7 Mo 0.1 O 3 and Pr 0.4 Sr 0.6 Co 0.45 Fe 0.45 Mo 0.1 O 3 , and NiFe 10.8 alloy nanoparticles are attached on the Pr 0.4 Sr 0.6 Ni 0.2 Fe 0.7 Mo 0.1 O 3 matrix. The reduced Pr 0.4 Sr 0.6 Ni 0.2 Fe 0.7 Mo 0.1 O 3 exhibits the highest oxygen vacancy concentration and CO 2 adsorption ability, which further promote oxygen surface exchange and electrochemical surface exchange reaction. Besides, the reduced Pr 0.4 Sr 0.6 Ni 0.2 Fe 0.7 Mo 0.1 O 3 exhibits the highest surface reaction rate constant ( k chem ) of 3.54 × 10 -4  cm s -1 and highest oxygen chemical bulk diffusion coefficient ( D chem ) of 27.53 × 10 -5  cm 2  s -1 , suggesting that reduced Pr 0.4 Sr 0.6 Ni 0.2 Fe 0.7 Mo 0.1 O 3 shows the best catalytic activity for CO 2 reduction reaction. The symmetrical cell with reduced Pr 0.4 Sr 0.6 Ni 0.2 Fe 0.7 Mo 0.1 O 3 shows the lowest polarization resistance ( R p ) value, and at 800 °C, the electrolysis cell with reduced Pr 0.4 Sr 0.6 Ni 0.2 Fe 0.7 Mo 0.1 O 3 cathode also exhibits the best performance of 0.81 A cm -2 in 50%CO-50%CO 2 and 1.05 A cm -2 in pure CO 2 at 1.5 V, indicating that reduced Pr 0.4 Sr 0.6 Ni 0.2 Fe 0.7 Mo 0.1 O 3 is a promising cathode for CO 2 electrolysis.

High performance metal-supported solid oxide fuel cells with Ni–Fe alloy support

Bofang Zhou,Yiwei Chen,Wenqiang Tang,Xueyan Zhao,Haoliang Tao,Zhidong Chen,Chongxi Bao,Hongxia Zhang,Liangzhu Zhu

Replacing the ceramic support of a conventional solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with a metal support is an active research trend for improving the robustness of SOFC. We report metal-supported SOFC (M-SOFC) prepared based on Ni–Fe alloy supports with different Ni to Fe atomic ratios. The results show a Ni to Fe atomic ratio of 7:3 ratio has a more homogeneous and balanced microstructure and mechanical strength. Besides metal support selection, the type of cathode also plays a key role on improving the performance of a M-SOFC. In this study, we choose SSC and SDC as cathode materials and prepare composite cathodes containing different weight ratios of SSC to SDC, i.e., 3:7, 5:5, and 7:3 with a cathode sintering temperature of 950 and 1050 °C are compared as well. The combination of a Ni to Fe atomic ratio of 7:3, a SSC to SDC weight ratio of 5:5, and a cathode sintering temperature of 1050 °C yields the highest performance. The SSC-SDC55 cathode on symmetrical cell test shows a very low polarization resistance of 0.035 Ω cm 2 at 800 °C. A tested single-cell consisting layers of Ni–Fe|NiO-YSZ|YSZ|GDC|SSC- SDC achieved a maximum power density of 1.4 W cm −2 at 800 °C, reaching one of the highest performances for Ni–Fe supported M-SOFC, proving the advantages of using Ni–Fe alloy as support for M-SOFC. The stability of our Ni–Fe alloy supported M-SOFC still needs improvement.

The synergistic effect between Ni sites and Ni-Fe alloy sites on hydrodeoxygenation of lignin-derived phenols

Qiao Han,Mooeez Ur Rehman,Junhu Wang,Alexandre Rykov,Oliver Y. Gutiérrez,Yujun Zhao,Shengping Wang,Xinbin Ma,Johannes A. Lercher

The catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of lignin-derived phenolic compounds is a critical step in the upgrading of bio-oil. Here, bimetallic Ni-Fe nanoparticles supported on mesoporous carbon spheres (MCSs) were fabricated and applied in HDO of phenol. In comparison with monometallic Ni and Fe catalysts, the bimetallic Ni-Fe catalyst exhibited better performance for phenol HDO due to the formation of Ni-Fe alloy phase identified by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Mössbauer spectroscopy techniques. Among several explored ratios, the catalysts with Ni/Fe ratio of 3/1 presented the highest cyclohexane yield. The reaction occurred in two consecutive steps: the hydrogenation of phenol to cyclohexanol and the further hydrogenolysis of cyclohexanol to cyclohexane. Kinetic studies showed that the hydrogenolysis of cyclohexanol controlled the overall reaction rate of phenol HDO due to the lower reaction rate of this step. Indeed, the turnover frequency (TOF) values of cyclohexanol normalized by surface metallic Ni sites exhibited a linear correlation with Ni-Fe alloy sites. The alloying of iron in the bimetallic Ni-Fe catalysts significantly enhanced the adsorption strength of cyclohexanol, which is the reason of the high activity of the Ni-Fe alloy particles. Thus, Fe-containing sites adsorb the hydroxyl species while Ni sites perform the H 2 activation, their synergistic effect plays a key role in phenol HDO process.

An in-situ alloyed Ni-Fe Co-reaction electrode for high-stability and high-rate Na-metal halide batteries

Xingpeng Gao,Yingying Hu,Wenping Zha,Yanpei Li,Jingyi Wang,Hongjian Lai,Xiangwei Wu,Jianhua Yang,Chunhua Chen,Zhaoyin Wen

Na-metal halide batteries are regarded as one of the most promising candidates for large-scale energy storage systems owing to their high energy density and high safety. However, the problems of low kinetics and poor stability caused by the low-conductive chlorides have restricted the development of Na-metal halide batteries. Here, we design a facile approach that combines electrospinning and electrodeposition to prepare electrodes with a nanostructured composite containing carbon nanofibers and Ni-Fe alloy (CNF@Ni-Fe alloy). It is confirmed that the Ni-Fe alloy can stably be oxidized and reformed when discharges from 2.36 V to 2.32 V. Benefiting from the unique nanoscale arrangement of Ni-Fe, the heterogeneous distribution of FeCl 2 and NiCl 2 effectively overcomes the block of low-conductive chlorides. Furthermore, the coreaction of Ni 2+ and Fe 2+ directly decreases the polarization potential, resulting in the improvement of reaction kinetics. Notably, batteries with the CNF@Ni-Fe alloy display a high specific capacity of 199.7 mAh g −1 and a capacity retention rate of 99% after 50 cycles at 0.6 C. The CNF@Ni-Fe alloy cathodes also deliver long-term stability with 104.5 mAh g −1 capacity retention after 600 cycles at 2 C and a good rate capability of 5 C.

A strategy for optimizing microstructure to simultaneously improve the strength and plasticity of W-Ni-Fe alloy

Wu Chongji,Yang Lu,Qian Zhu,Yan Zupeng,Sun Xia,Hu Weiqiang,Ma Zongqing

The conventional sintered W-Ni-Fe alloy encounters challenges in achieving both high strength and plasticity simultaneously, primarily due to its inadequate organizational compatibility. To address this issue, we developed a novel approach combining in situ freeze-drying and straightforward liquid-phase sintering techniques to effectively control the microstructure of 93W-4.9Ni-2.1Fe alloys. The corresponding W-Ni-Fe alloy in this work simultaneously takes into account ultrafine W grains (28.3 µm), low W-W connectivity (CW-W = 0.31), and suitable γ phase volume fraction (20.2%), which is currently difficult for traditional W-Ni-Fe alloys to achieve. The minute dimensions of nanopowder play a crucial role in inhibiting Ostwald ripening and facilitating W grain refinement. Additionally, the extensive surface area of nanopowder enhances capillary penetration, leading to effective homogenization of high γ phase volume. As a result, the freeze-dried W-Ni-Fe alloy simultaneously achieves high strength (1010 MPa) and high plasticity (31%), which provides a new insight for the further development of W-Ni-Fe alloy industries.

Dual Active Sites of Ni and FeNi3 Constructed from Layered Double Hydroxides for One-Pot Hydrogenation of Furfural to Tetrahydrofurfuryl Alcohol

Rongrong Li,Wenqi Liu,Huibin Liu,Hongyu Niu,Quan Zhou,Changhai Liang,Xiao Chen

One-pot hydrogenation of biomass-derived furfural with multiple reduction sites requires suitable metal sites to achieve a high value-added chemical in high yield. In this work, nonprecious Ni–Fe bimetallic catalysts with high efficiency derived from FexNiy/MgAl-LDH hydrotalcite precursors are prepared for one-pot sequential hydrogenation of furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol at mild conditions. Through fine adjustment of metallic Fe/Ni molar ratios in hydrotalcite precursors, bimetallic FexNiy/MgAlO catalysts can be constructed. The topological transformation of hydrotalcite precursors provides a mesoporous structure for bimetallic supported catalysts. Due to the formation of the Ni–Fe alloy, there is an electron transfer from Fe to Ni in the catalyst due to the higher electronegativity of Ni than that of Fe, which greatly influences the adsorption of furfural on the surface of catalysts. Comparing the structures and catalytic performances of monometallic Ni/MgAlO and Fe/MgAlO catalysts, the Ni-rich Fe1Ni4/MgAlO catalyst with the dual active sites of metallic Ni and FeNi3 alloy presents high efficiency in sequential hydrogenation of the C═O bonds and C═C bonds of furfural to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol with the yield of 90.3% under 3 MPa H2 and 80 °C for 3 h, which can be an alternative for noble metal catalysts. Additionally, the Ni-rich Fe1Ni4/MgAlO catalyst presents excellent cycling stability. This design strategy for nonprecious NiFe bimetallic catalysts not only provide promising candidates for effective utilization of biobased furfural but also extend the application of bimetallic catalysts derived from hydrotalcite precursors for one-pot hydrogenation reactions.

Comparative study on phenol and naphthalene steam reforming over Ni-Fe alloy catalysts supported on olivine synthesized by different methods

Junguang Meng,Zengli Zhao,Xiaobo Wang,Anqing Zheng,Dongyan Zhang,Zhen Huang,Kun Zhao,Guoqiang Wei,Haibin Li

Ni/Fe bimetallic catalysts were synthesized on an olivine support using the wetness impregnation (WI) and thermal fusion (TF) methods, and catalytic cracking and steam reforming on different tar model compounds (phenol and naphthalene) were investigated in a fixed bed reactor. The effects of the reaction temperature and space-time on the catalytic cracking activity of phenol and naphthalene were tested, and the influences of steam on the carbon molar ratio (S/C) and different synthesized methods on the steam reforming of phenol and naphthalene were also studied. In addition, the carbon deposited on the catalyst was analysed using temperature program oxidation (TPO), Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) methods. The elemental composition of the catalyst was analysed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and the physiochemical properties of the catalysts were characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), the BET surface area, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), TEM, Raman spectroscopy, temperature program reduction (TPR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results showed that the structure of TF-Ni/Fe/olivine changed considerably compared with that of calcined olivine (mainly the Mg 2 SiO 4 phase) and that a portion of Fe was fused into the olivine structure and reorganized into a new (Mg, Fe) Fe 2 O 4 phase. After reduction, the Ni-Fe alloy was detected on both catalysts, and the particle size of the Ni-Fe alloy on TF-Ni/Fe/olivine was smaller than that of WI-Ni/Fe/olivine. The TF-Ni/Fe/olivine cracked phenol into small-molecule gas (CO and H 2 ) and a small quantity of olefin. By contrast, phenol was polymerized to naphthalene in the absence of a catalyst. The phenol and naphthalene steam reforming conversion on WI-Ni/Fe/olivine were both higher than that of TF-Ni/Fe/olivine. A 100-h stability test of phenol steam reforming on TF-Ni/Fe/olivine and WI-Ni/Fe/olivine was conducted, and TF-Ni/Fe/olivine showed higher stability in the early stages of the experiment due to stronger interactions between the active sites and olivine support. The deposited carbon from naphthalene steam reforming was more difficult to eliminate because it contained more C β and C γ , which had higher degrees of graphitization.
