Noble-metal-free Ni3C as co-catalyst on LaNiO3 with enhanced photocatalytic activity

Han Zhang,Zhaoming Luo,Yalun Liu,Yuwen Jiang

In this study, Ni 3 C nanoparticles (NPs) were loaded on LaNiO 3 NPs as a co-catalyst during the photocatalytic H 2 evolution. The evolution rate of the LaNiO 3 -3 wt%Ni 3 C composite (4093.9 μmol g −1  h −1 ) is about 5 times and 2 times as that of pristine LaNiO 3 NPs (819.2 μmol g −1  h −1 ), and 1 wt% Pt loaded LaNiO 3 NPs (1927 μmol g −1  h −1 ). The effects of co-catalyze with Ni 3 C on light absorption, electron-hole spatial separation, and surface H 2 -evolution kinetics are investigated. Loading with Ni 3 C can enhance the spatial separation of electron-hole pairs, and improve the H 2 -evolution kinetics. Further investigation shows that surface decomposition of LaNiO 3 NPs can only be observed when the Ni 3 C content is over 3 wt%, caused by the reductive carbon source needed in the loading process. This work indicates that transition metal carbide can be a promising co-catalyst candidate for oxides in photocatalytic applications without concerning corrosion from the reductive carbonaceous precursors in the loading process.

Rationally designed CaTiO3/Mn0.5Cd0.5S/Ni3C S-scheme/Schottky integrated heterojunction for efficient photocatalytic H2 evolution

Hua Lv,Chayuan Zhou,Qinhui Shen,Yuanfang Kong,Baoliang Wan,Zhiyun Suo,Gongke Wang,Guangtao Wang,Yumin Liu

Developing effective photocatalysts to achieve stable and efficient solar-induced hydrogen production remains a significant challenge due to rapid photocarrier recombination and sluggish hydrogen evolution kinetics. Here, a multi-interfacial engineering strategy involving the decoration of metallic Ni 3 C onto CaTiO 3 /Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S was proposed to create an S-scheme/Schottky hybrid heterostructure with multiple carrier transport paths for effective photocatalytic H 2 production. Exploiting the synergy between S-scheme heterojunction and Schottky barrier, the engineered ternary CaTiO 3 /Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/Ni 3 C hybrid heterojunction exhibits outstanding photostability and significantly enhanced hydrogen evolution activity of 79.1 mmol g -1  h −1 , which was about 4.55, 3.22 and 2.59 times greater than Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S, Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S/Ni 3 C, and CaTiO 3 /Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S, respectively. By creating an S-scheme heterojunction between CaTiO 3 and Mn 0.5 Cd 0.5 S, accompanied by a robust internal electric field (IEF), spatial charge separation can be effectively accelerated while ensuring the simultaneous preservation of highly active electrons and holes. Meanwhile, Ni 3 C nanoparticles, acting as a Schottky-junction H 2 generation cocatalyst, can efficiently trap the photoinduced electrons to establish multiple charge transfer channels and supply ample active sites for photoreduction reaction, thereby further optimizing the hydrogen generation kinetics. The integration of a Schottky barrier and S-scheme heterojunction in this research is expected to offer new perspectives for designing other highly effective hybrid catalysts for solar-to-hydrogen fuel conversion.

Simple preparation of g-C3N4@Ni3C nanosheets and its application in supercapacitor electrode materials, hydrogengeneration via NaBH4 hydrolysis and reduction of p–nitrophenol

Minmin Liu,Baitong Niu,Hongxu Guo,Shaoming Ying,Zhangxu Chen

g-C 3 N 4 @Ni 3 C nano-sheets have been prepared by a simple pyrolysis under different temperature, and the as-prepared samples have been characterized by many means, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) and pore size distribution. The as-prepared g-C 3 N 4 @Ni 3 C nano-sheet has been proved to be a versatile functional material, that is the application in supercapacitor electrode materials, hydrogen generation via NaBH 4 hydrolysis and reduction of p– nitrophenol. This method offers a new strategy for preparation of environmental energy materials through simple raw materials.

Structural and Electronic Engineering of Co-doped Ni3C Nanoparticles Encapsulated in Ultrathin Carbon Layers for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Tianyu Zhang,Shensong Wang,Fengling Zhou,Sangaraju Shanmugam,Hasuck Kim,Xinyi Zhang

Graphical We report the synthesis of Co-doped Ni 3 C nanoparticles encapsulated in ultrathin carbon layers (CNCC) by in-situ thermal decomposition of organic-inorganic hybrid as high-performance HER electrocatalysts. With resurgent interest in green hydrogen as a key element in the transition to a renewable-energy economy, developing efficient, earth-abundant, and low-cost catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is becoming increasingly important but is still very challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of Co-doped Ni 3 C nanoparticles encapsulated in ultrathin carbon layers (CNCC) by in-situ thermal decomposition of organic-inorganic hybrid as high-performance HER electrocatalysts. Experimental and density functional theory studies evidence that the substantial high-index (113) surfaces in synergy with a few atomic carbon layers contribute significantly to the activity and stability, while the electronic structure of Ni 3 C is optimized through tuning the Co content to enhance the intrinsic kinetics for HER. The CNCC exhibits excellent HER activities with overpotentials at 10 mA cm −2 (η 10 ) of 102 and 69 mV and Tafel slopes of 74 and 43 mV dec −1 in respective neutral and alkaline media along with a superior stability without noticeable decay up to 100 h. More importantly, the CNCC outperforms the benchmark Pt/C catalyst under high current density (>38 mA cm −2 ) in an alkaline electrolyte, showing great potential for practical hydrogen production.

Boosting oxygen evolution reaction on Ni3C via electronic modulation by cerium doping

Huimin Jiang,Yanzhen Qiu,Zhe Feng,Kaiyu Liu,Sarah Alharthi,Mohammed A. Amin,Jianjian Lin

The development of transition metal carbides (TMCs) as non-precious electrocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen production is hindered by the challenge of precisely controlling their electronic and geometric structures. Herein, we develop a facile in situ self-polymerization and gas-phase deposition strategy to synthesize Ce-doped Ni 3 C (Ce-Ni 3 C), where Ce incorporation induces favorable electron redistribution and optimizes active-site accessibility. Remarkably, the one-week self-polymerized Ce-Ni 3 C -1 catalyst exhibits exceptional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance in alkaline media, achieving an ultralow overpotential of 210.9 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 39.4 mV dec −1 , and minimal charge-transfer resistance, indicative of rapid reaction kinetics. The catalyst demonstrates outstanding durability, maintaining stable activity over 1000 CV cycles with negligible current density decay during 100 h chronoamperometry. This work has opened new avenues for high-performance electrocatalyst design.

NiCx/Ni-foam discovered as a promising high-temperature WGSR catalyst

Shuang Xue,Tian Lan,Guofeng Zhao,Qiang Nie,Chao Meng,Xinyi Xu,Yong Lu

Water gas shift reaction (WGSR) is urgently calling for an alternative to the Fe-Cr catalyst. Ni-based catalysts are taken into consideration but remain challenging because of their high methanation activity. Here we report a highly active and selective NiC x /Ni-foam catalyst with clearly detectable Ni 3 C phase, facilely obtainable by endogenous growth of NiC 2 O 4 onto a Ni-foam and subsequent H 2 -reduction treatment. The preferred catalyst with high content of NiC x is capable of converting 63.6% or 94.3% CO at 350 °C or 400 °C with trace or < 0.8% CH 4 formation for a feed gas with H 2 O/CO/Ar molar ratio of 4/1/9, and is stable for at least 110 h. It is experimentally and theoretically unveiled that the Ni 3 C facilitates the dissociative activation of H 2 O and favors CO to form carboxylate species (favorable for CO 2 formation) rather than active Ni(CO) n intermediates for CH 4 formation thereby enabling the catalyst with high WGSR activity and selectivity.

Ni@Ni3C Nanochain-SWCNT Composite with Comparable Electrocatalysis of Benchmark Pt/C for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Yijun Liu,Suyu He,Fengping Zhan,Feng Gao,Wei Sun,Qingxiang Wang

Developing robust and low-cost electrocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through facile methods is of great significance to the energy and environment sustainability. Herein, a simple one-pot solvothermal method has been developed to synthesize a hybrid material of nickel@nickel carbide (Ni@Ni3C) nanochain embedded in a network of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The electrochemical experiments indicate that the composite of Ni@Ni3C-SWCNTs has the HER electrocatalytic performance comparable to that of Pt/C in an acidic medium (0.5 M H2SO4). The overpotential to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 is only −74 mV with a Tafel slope of 46.9 mV dec−1. Compared to Ni@Ni3C in the absence of SWCNTs, the enhanced HER performance of Ni@Ni3C-SWCNTs can be attributed to the increased intrinsic activity, improved electronic conductivity, and the electron coupling effect between Ni@Ni3C and SWCNTs. The Ni@Ni3C-SWCNTs composites also show high stability at the overpotential of −0.2 V for 24 h. This work provides guidance for the synthesis of high-performance non-precious metal electrocatalysts for HER.

Pitch-encapsulated Ni/Ni3C anchored on ammonia-activated carbon nanotubes for high-performance zinc-air batteries

Huimin Feng,Xinxin Pi,Yanhui Li,Yunkai Wang,Mengjin Wen,Chengrui Wang,Chunlei Zhang,Yan He

The improvement of rechargeable zinc-air batteries is still limited by the sluggish oxygen electrochemistry at the air cathode, where both the oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution processes need to be accelerated. In this work, a Ni/Ni 3 C composite was obtained by thermal treatment using ammonia-activated carbon nanotubes as the conductive backbone and coal tar pitch as a supplementary carbon precursor. Ni and Ni 3 C nanoparticles are anchored on the nanotube framework, and part of their surface is wrapped by graphitized carbon. Such a multiphase architecture builds efficient electron-transport channels, reinforces the coupling between the Ni-based species and the carbon matrix, and improves structural robustness under electrochemical conditions. The catalyst therefore shows strong bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity, giving a half-wave potential of 0.86 V for ORR and an overpotential of 250 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 for OER, together with satisfactory durability. When assembled as the air cathode of a rechargeable zinc-air battery, it affords an open-circuit voltage of about 1.42 V, a peak power density of 195 mW·cm −2 , and stable cycling for more than 200 h at 5 mA·cm −2 . DFT calculations indicate that nitrogen-containing interfacial sites reshape the local charge distribution and improve the adsorption and conversion of oxygen intermediates, which is favorable for both ORR and OER.

Boosting oxygen evolution reaction of hierarchical spongy NiFe-PBA/Ni3C(B) electrocatalyst: Interfacial engineering with matchable structure

Xiaojing Lin,Shoufu Cao,Hongyu Chen,Xiaodong Chen,Zhaojie Wang,Sainan Zhou,Hui Xu,Siyuan Liu,Shuxian Wei,Xiaoqing Lu

Rational interfacial structure with excellent charge transfer and exposure of numerous active sites plays vital roles in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, a hierarchical spongy electrocatalyst with active NiFe Prussian blue analogues and nickel carbides interface (NiFe-PBA/Ni 3 C(B)) is proposed and fabricated by a borate-assisted strategy. The unique structure and matchable interface benefit from the desorption of borate ligands in-situ during the pyrolysis and carbonization process. The optimal electrocatalyst composing of metal–organic framework (NiFe prussian blue analogues) in conjunction with a metallic transition carbide phase (nickel carbide) exhibits an ultra-low overpotential of only 196 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 30.1 mV dec -1 for OER in KOH. The robust water oxidation performance can be ascribed to the abundant adsorption sites and effective interfacial interaction. In addition, computational simulations further confirm that NiFe-PBA/Ni 3 C(B) is favorable for OER since the optimized electronic distribution and metal-3d orbitals interact around Fermi level at the interface. This research provides a new insight into rationally designing efficient electrocatalysts via morphology engineering and integrating different functional phase with complementary advantages for catalysis application.

Homogeneous dual-site P lattice doping in CdS quantum rods for visible-light photocatalytic water splitting

He Li,Hua An,Ben Chong,Guidong Yang,Lianzhou Wang

Dual-site lattice doping in semiconductor materials is highly promising for photocatalysis as it can tune the sub-band electronic structure and charge distribution of the photocatalyst. However, it is challenging to precisely regulate the band structure by dual-site doping using the same heteroatom. Herein, we report the homogeneous dual-site P lattice doping in CdS quantum rods, i.e. P is homogeneously doped into both substitutional site of S and interstitial site, leading to negative shift of valence and conduction bands with extraordinary visible-light excitation efficiency. The electrons generated in the newly designed photocatalyst have strong redox potential in reducing H + into H 2 in photocatalysis. By introducing nontrivial co-catalyst Ni 3 C quantum dots onto the surface of P-CdS quantum rods, the apparent quantum efficiency of the catalyst achieves 15.7% at 435 nm, which is 5 times higher than that of pristine CdS.
