Realizing efficient electrocatalysts is a stepping stone toward achieving high-performance alkaline water/seawater electrolysis, but remains a crucial challenge. Herein, heterogeneous Mo 2 N/Ni 3 Mo 3 N electrocatalysts on nickel foam (denoted MN-NMN/NF) that is stable and active for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both alkaline water/seawater are demonstrated. The optimized MN-NMN09/NF achieves an ultralow HER overpotential of 11 mV@10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 m KOH electrolyte, which is not only superior to the benchmark Pt/C catalysts but also the best reported ever among NiMo-based electrocatalysts in an alkaline environment. Successively, the optimized MN-NMN09/NF electrocatalyst can drive HER current densities of 10 and 500 mA cm −2 using low overpotentials of 9.37 and 123 mV in 1.0 m KOH seawater electrolyte, which remains durable after 120 h long-term electrolysis at a constant current density of 500 mA cm −2 . In situ Raman analysis reveals that the enhanced performance is attributed to the accelerated H 2 O adsorption and OH dissociation processes on the MN-NMN surfaces. Theoretical analysis further confirms that rapid H 2 O adsorption-dissociation kinetics and H adsorption-conversion kinetics on the Ni 3 Mo 3 N/NiOOH and Ni 3 Mo 3 N/MoO x surfaces result in boosted HER capability. This work depicts a significant potential for designing stable and efficient hydrogen production electrocatalysts for both alkaline water and seawater electrolysis.

The development of efficient nonprecious metal catalysts for the alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) catalyst in alkaline anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) is of great significance. Nickel-based catalysts are considered to be promising HOR catalysts. Here, we report the interfacial engineering of reduced graphene oxide-supported Ni and Ni–Mo bimetallic nitrides (Ni–Ni3Mo3N/rGO), which exhibit excellent catalytic activity of alkaline HOR. The electron transfer from Ni to Ni3Mo3N has been regulated to tune the electronic structure. Due to the interface effect between Ni and Ni3Mo3N, Ni–Ni3Mo3N/rGO exhibits enhanced HOR activity, with a high current density of 2.65 mA cm–2 at an overpotential of 50 mV. Additionally, it demonstrates higher exchange current density (j0, 3.21 mA cm–2) and kinetic current density (jk, 10.35 mA cm–2), indicating fast kinetics and high intrinsic activity of Ni–Ni3Mo3N/rGO. Furthermore, detailed characterization results illustrate that due to the rational adsorption of hydrogen and hydroxyl groups by Ni–Ni3Mo3N/rGO, it possesses significant activity and durability. These research findings are of great importance for the development of more efficient alkaline HOR catalysts to promote the application of alkaline AEMFCs.

Developing efficient non-precious metal-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are essential for large-scale hydrogen production . In this work, a highly efficient and durable electrode, comprising nitrogen-doped carbon-coated nickel molybdenum nitride porous microrod array supported by nickel foam (Ni 3 Mo 3 N-NC/NF), was prepared through a simple hydrothermal reaction and high-temperature calcination . The Ni 3 Mo 3 N-NC/NF catalyst exhibited outstanding HER catalytic activity by achieving the current density of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 at the low overpotentials of 39 and 149 mV, with a Tafel plot of 71 mV dec −1 , surpassing most of the reported transition metal nitride catalysts. The excellent electrocatalytic performance could be ascribed to the high intrinsic activity and the metallic conductive nature of Ni 3 Mo 3 N, the anti-oxidation ability of the nitrogen-doped carbon layer , and the large surface area provided by porous microrod array. Hence, this work shed light on the enormous potential of transition metal nitrides as an advanced class of electrocatalysts for efficient HER.

The importance of efficient and stable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts for hydrogen production in alkaline conditions to energy crisis resolution and environmental pollution is immense. In general, the quantity of catalytic sites in the electrocatalyst limits the current density of HER. In response to such problems, the bimetallic effect of non-noble bimetallic nitrides has been shown to regulate the corresponding catalytic sites. Here, a microrod-like non-noble bimetallic nitride catalyst with Ni3Mo3N microrods uniformly modified on nickel foam was synthesized by hydrothermal and nitriding processes. The catalyst showed high catalytic activity for HER in 1 M KOH solution. The overpotential was only 28 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm−2, demonstrating exceptional electrochemical performance. Furthermore, it exhibited remarkable long-term stability under the same current density. This work will open up a low-cost and simple way for the synthesis of bimetallic nitrides as functional electrode materials for HER and electrochemical detection.
