ZnIn2S4 supported carbon dots/Ni3P hybrid for efficient photothermal catalytic hydrogen production from water

Juan Jia,Xiaomin Guo,Ying Tang,Wenjing Zeng,Hui Zeng,Zebao Rui

Construction of efficient and economically controllable catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen production to relieve environmental and energy pressures remains an ongoing challenge. Herein, indium zinc sulfide supported carbon dots (CDs) and Ni 3 P hybrid (CDs/Ni 3 P/ZnIn 2 S 4 ) is designed as a robust catalyst for photothermal catalytic hydrogen production by water splitting. The co-introduction of CDs/Ni 3 P on ZnIn 2 S 4 as electron acceptors effectively enhances the photon harvest capacity and separation efficiency of photogenerated charges, and ultimately leads to excellent photothermal catalytic hydrogen production performance. The average hydrogen production rate of CDs/Ni 3 P/ZnIn 2 S 4 reaches 1880.78 μmol g −1  h −1 under 50 °C and full spectrum irradiation of 200 mW cm −2 , which is ∼8.8 times higher than the pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 and ranges among those over noble metal catalysts. Such a work provides a reliable route for the design of non-precious photothermal catalysts for photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Synergistic Coupling of Hierarchical Heterostructured Ni3P/Ni/VN Microflower Electrocatalyst for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Changle Fu,Liangliang Feng,Hongyan Yin,Yuhang Li,Guodong Li,Yongqiang Feng,Liyun Cao,Jianfeng Huang,Yipu Liu

Graphical Hierarchized Microflowers for Hydrogen Evoluation Reaction : A novel tactic of synergetic electronic coupling is successfully developed for rationally engineering hierarchical heterostructured electrocatalyst towards hydrogen evolution reaction. The exploration of economical and highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is paramount for the development of sustainable hydrogen economy. Herein, a novel three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical microflower electrocatalyst comprised of N-doped carbon-armored Ni 3 P/Ni/VN heterogeneous nanoparticles (Ni 3 P/Ni/VN@NC) is developed by combining a hydrothermal method with in-situ carbonization-phosphating strategy. The unique robust hierarchical structure derived from 3D NiV layered double hydroxide (NiV-LDH) skeleton as precursor provides multidimensional mass and charge transport channels as well as numerous active sites for HER, leading to the improved HER activity. More importantly, the possible electron transfer route of Ni 3 P→Ni→VN is demonstrated due to the charge pumping capability of VN during interfacial electron intercoupling among the tri-component, which endows Ni 3 P/Ni/VN with the favorable absorption of hydrogen-intermediates and thus upgraded HER kinetics over such heterostructure. The resulting Ni 3 P/Ni/VN@NC catalyst exhibits extremely low overpotentials of 81 mV and 134 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 without iR -compensation in alkaline and acidic media, respectively, and maintains continuous operation for over 90 h. This work enlightens the rational design of hierarchical multi-component heterostructured catalysts for efficient hydrogen production.

Preparation of defect-rich Ni3P-NiB-FeB heterostructure as efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst for overall water splitting

Longqian Wang,Pan Wang,Shuangqing Li,Huishan Shang,Dan Wang,Yafei Zhao,Bing Zhang

Designing transition metal-based heterointerfaces and creating defects are identified as prospective strategies for substituting the expensive noble metal-based catalysts for realizing efficient water electrocatalysis to alleviate the energy and environmental crisis. Herein, pleated sheet-like NiP 3 -NiB-FeB heterostructure nanoarrays with three-phase heterojunctions and luxuriant defects were developed and grown in-situ on carbon cloth as effective self-supported bifunctional electrocatalysts for water-splitting by a facile one-step solution titration method. As expected, the Ni 3 P-NiB-FeB reveals remarkable electrocatalytic performance, requiring only 134 mV and 275 mV overpotentials to achieve the current density of 10 mA cm −2 for HER and 100 mA cm −2 for OER, respectively, whose performance exceeds most transition metal-based catalysts in previous reports. More encouragingly, the electrolyzer with Ni 3 P-NiB-FeB as a working electrode can attain a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at a low voltage of 1.63 V accompanied by a long cycle stability of at least 36 h. The large specific surface area, abundant heterogeneous phase interfaces, and rich defective sites jointly contribute to the exposure of more active sites, regulation of the regional electron density, and promotion of the electrical conductivity, while the introduction of electronegativity P and electron-deficient B also impart Ni 3 P-NiB-FeB with strong electronic interactions and fast charge transfer, thus endowing Ni 3 P-NiB-FeB with excellent catalytic activity. This work opens up new opportunities in multi-phase heterointerfaces and defects engineering of transition metal-based borides and phosphides as efficient multifunctional electrocatalysts for practical water splitting.

Highly selective hydrogenative ring-rearrangement of furfural to cyclopentanone over a bifunctional Ni3P/γ-Al2O3 catalyst

Zhiquan Yu,Yan Li,Yunlong Yao,Yao Wang,Ying-Ya Liu,Zhichao Sun,Chuan Shi,Wei Wang,Anjie Wang

A bifunctional Ni 3 P/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst with both metal site and Lewis acid site was prepared by an electroless plating method, and applied in hydrogenative ring-rearrangement of furfural to cyclopentanone. The obtained catalyst was characterized by XRD, XPS, XAS, N 2 adsorption-desorption, ICP, TEM, CO chemisorption, NH 3 -TPD and Py-FTIR. The ultrafine Ni 3 P nanoparticles (∼3.8 nm) were highly dispersed in the catalyst. The exclusive Lewis acidity of Ni 3 P/γ-Al 2 O 3 was beneficial for the aqueous-phase hydrogenative ring-rearrangement. The effects of DP time, reaction parameters (temperature, H 2 pressure, solvent composition, and reaction time) on the catalytic performance were investigated. The yield of cyclopentanone was 74.6% at furfural conversion of 99.9% at 180 °C in 1 h over Ni 3 P/γ-Al 2 O 3 catalyst using pure water as the solvent. Moreover, the kinetics of hydrogenative ring-rearrangement of furfural catalyzed by Ni 3 P/γ-Al 2 O 3 was investigated.

High-Performance Ni3P Catalyst for C═O Hydrogenation of Ethyl Levulinate: Niδ+ as Outstanding Adsorption Sites

Yafei Li,Boyang Liu,Yu Wang,Shiqing Wang,Xiaocheng Lan,Tiefeng Wang

It is important but challenging to develop non-noble metal catalysts with high activity and selectivity for biomass conversion. The activation of C═O bond is a crucial step in biomass upgradation. Herein, a series of Ni-xP/Al2O3 catalysts with different P/Ni molar ratios were prepared for the conversion of ethyl levulinate to γ-valerolactone. The developed Ni-0.38P/Al2O3 catalyst was 5.4 times more active than conventional Ni/Al2O3 based on turnover frequency and significantly outperformed the state-of-the-art non-noble metal catalysts. The unique catalytic performance was ascribed to the formation of Ni3P phase, which was identified by several characterizations. The results of DFT calculation and characterization by XPS and CO-FTIR revealed that electron was transferred from Ni to P with the formation of Niδ+ sites. In situ FTIR for the surface reaction indicated that Niδ+ acted as a new active site to activate the C═O bond, which rendered the high intrinsic activity of Ni3P for the C═O hydrogenation of EL.

Hongjing Wang,Wenjie Zhan,Hongjie Yu,Shaojian Jiang,Beibei Wang,Kai Deng,Ziqiang Wang,You Xu,Liang Wang

The global plastic pollution problem has seriously affected the survival of natural and human organisms. Electrochemical polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic reforming powered by renewable electricity, is expected to provide an environmentally friendly, convenient, and efficient way to recycle plastics. Herein, we synthesized a heterostructure array catalyst of nitrogen-doped Ni 3 P–NiMoO 4 on nickel foam (N–Ni 3 P–NiMoO 4 /NF) for coupling PET waste plastic electro-recycling and hydrogen production . Due to the rich catalytic active sites provided by the heterogeneous interface structure , N–Ni 3 P–NiMoO 4 /NF can achieve a low hydrogen evolution overpotential of 142 mV with a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . The PET hydrolysate-containing electrolyte had a potential of 194 mV lower than that of conventional water splitting at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 and catalyze the conversion of PET hydrolysate to formate efficiently with a maximum Faraday efficiency of 92.2%. This work provides a new strategy and approach for upcycling resource utilization and energy-saving hydrogen production of PET waste plastic.

Heterogeneous Ni3P/Ni nanoparticles with optimized Ni active sites anchored in N-doped mesoporous nanofibers for boosting pH-universal hydrogen evolution

Changle Fu,Liangliang Feng,Hongyan Yin,Yuhang Li,Yajie Xie,Yongqiang Feng,Yajuan Zhao,Liyun Cao,Jianfeng Huang,Yipu Liu

Developing low-cost, environmentally friendly and efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts as alternatives to noble metals for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly essential for the sustainable advancement of green hydrogen energy. Herein, a novel heterostructured Ni3P/Ni nanoparticle anchored in nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon nanofibers (Ni3P/Ni@N-CNFs) is prepared by a facile solid-phase calcination protocol. The results demonstrated that benefiting from the intensive electronic coupling effect at the interface of the Ni3P/Ni heterostructure, the electron configuration of the Ni active site is optimized and thus the favorable HER activity. Furthermore, the N-doped carbon nanofiber scaffold with an extensive mesoporous structure endows Ni3P/Ni@N-CNFs with abundant electrochemically active sites together with excellent conductivity and stability, contributing to fast electron/mass transport. As expected, the resultant Ni3P/Ni@N-CNF electrocatalyst exhibited exceptional HER catalytic properties under universal pH conditions, driving a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at pretty low overpotentials of 121 mV, 145 mV and 187 mV in acidic, basic and neutral solutions, respectively, and retaining the catalytic stability for over 60 h. This intriguing work represents a fresh perspective for designing and exploiting highly advanced phosphide electrocatalysts for green hydrogen fuel production.

Synergistic effects of Ni-Ni3P and Lewis-Brønsted acid for enhanced hydrodeoxygenation of phenolic compounds over Ni-Ni3P/ZrP

Riyang Shu,Yu Chen,Yuankai Lin,Yongyuan Deng,Yan Liu,Kaixin Li,Tao Yin,Zhongqing Ma,Jinxing Long

Catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is an efficient and promising approach to upgrade lignin-derived phenolic compounds for the production of high-quality liquid fuels. In this work, a readily obtained Ni-Ni 3 P/ZrP catalyst featuring synergistic catalytic sites of Ni-Ni 3 P and Lewis-Brønsted acid was provided for promoting the HDO performance of lignin-derived phenolic compounds. By regulating the ratio of Zr to P (Zr/P), the catalytic activity of Ni/ZrP was significantly modified. With the optimized catalyst of Ni-Ni 3 P/ZrP-0.75, guaiacol is completely converted into cyclohexane at a low temperature of 240 °C. Further investigation shows that the synergistic effect of Ni and Ni 3 P, deriving from that Ni acts as metal site to activate hydrogen and Ni 3 P serves as Lewis acid site to adsorb guaiacol substrate, promotes the hydrogenation procedure significantly. Moreover, ZrP support as Lewis acid also demonstrates a synergistic interaction with Brønsted acid site that derives from the P-OH group. The coordination of Lewis-Brønsted acid site significantly improves the deoxygenation procedure. The strong interaction between Ni species and ZrP support accelerates the sequential occurrence of hydrogenation and deoxygenation procedures, thus improving the HDO efficiency. The Ni-Ni 3 P/ZrP-0.75 can be reused at least six runs without significant activity loss. Moreover, this Ni-Ni 3 P/ZrP-0.75 is efficient on the upgrading of realistic lignin-oil, with the hydrocarbon content increase from 13.4 % to 93.8 %. Therefore, this work provides a valuable reference for the rational design of bifunctional catalysts in the HDO reactions.

Ni3P featuring electron-rich Niδ+ for aqueous-phase hydrogenation of maleic acid

Zhengyu Zhao,Hongmei Bai,Hongwei Zhang,Qunhong Liu,Hui Guo,Xinru Wu,Kewen Zhang,Di Yang,Qingchen Wu,Cejun Hu,Xiaojun Bao,Pei Yuan

The aqueous-phase hydrogenation of maleic acid (MAc) represents a sustainable approach to succinic acid (SAc) production, yet its efficiency and stability are hampered by the isomerization of MAc to fumaric acid (FAc) and metal leaching under acidic conditions. Herein, we present a nickel phosphide (Ni 3 P) catalyst for the efficient aqueous hydrogenation of MAc. XPS and XAFS analyses reveal the electronic state of the active Ni δ+ species in Ni 3 P is modulated by the annealing temperature. Coupled with adsorption thermodynamics and in situ DRIFTS studies, we demonstrate that a higher density of active sites, an increased surface Ni/P ratio, and electron-enriched Ni δ+ species collectively enhance the adsorption–desorption kinetics of reactants. As a result, the optimized Ni 3 P-400 catalyst achieves complete conversion to SAc with 100% yield and retains full activity over 15 consecutive cycles. These findings underscore the ability of Ni 3 P to tailor the electronic environment of Ni sites, providing a strategy for the design of acid-resistant and high-performance hydrogenation catalysts.

Multiphase phosphide cocatalyst for boosting efficient photocatalytic H2 production and enhancing the stability

Song Liu,Jinxing Huang,Haiwei Su,Guogang Tang,Qinqin Liu,Jingfang Sun,Jing Xu

Constructing appropriate cocatalysts to modify semiconductors is significant for improving photocatalytic H 2 production and stability. Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) with low-cost and high efficiency have been considered as one of the most promising non-noble-metal cocatalysts. Herein, a novel multiphase phosphide nanosheet , Fe 2 P/Ni 3 P cocatalyst, was target designed and in-situ incorporated with Cu 2 O nanocubes via a phosphorization method for photocatalytic H2 evolution under visible light irradiation. The optimal Cu 2 O/Fe 2 P/Ni 3 P sample provided 10-folds higher photocatalytic activity of H2 evolution rate (108.68 μmol g−1 h−1) than that of single Cu 2 O (18.6 μmol g −1  h −1 ), which could be ascribed to fast charge transfer from the Cu 2 O to multiphase phosphide Fe 2 P/Ni 3 P cocatalyst and efficient separation of the light-induced charge carriers. Moreover, the Fe 2 P/Ni 3 P cocatalyst also improved the photo-corrosion of Cu 2 O caused by the disproportionation reaction, leading the Cu 2 O/Fe 2 P/Ni 3 P hybrid possessed robust stability. Additionally, this work guarantees useful insights in employing novel TMPs-based cocatalysts to construct visible-light-responsive photocatalysts , which manifests promising applications in the dwindling supply of energy.

Tuning Morphologies of Metal–Organic Framework-Derived Ni3P/Ni Carbon Nanocomposites for Water Oxidation

Yanqiong Shen,Shaojie Xu,Huijie Ni,Qipeng Li,Jinjie Qian

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) frequently acts as a kinetic bottleneck in various energy storage and conversion systems. Effective electrocatalysts for the OER play a crucial role in reducing the reaction barrier and expediting the reaction. Multicomponent transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have garnered an extensive amount of attention as a result of their exceptional performance in the OER. Here, we present a direct method for preparing two intrinsic morphologies of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), barrel-like BMM-10 and pancake-like BMM-10(Ac), achieved by establishing a protonation/deprotonation equilibrium with varying NO3–/Ac– ratios. The BMM-10(Ac)-C catalyst was synthesized via heat treatment of the BMM-10(Ac) precursor, exhibiting superior OER performance. It realized an overpotential of 286 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2, with a Tafel slope of 111.17 mV decade–1 and a current retention of 98.03%. This improvement arises from the synergistic interaction between Ni3P/Ni nanoparticles and the partially graphitic carbon layer, augmenting the exposure of active sites. Furthermore, alterations in the morphological features of MOF-derived Ni3P/Ni carbon nanocomposites adjusted the active electrochemical surface area, thereby modulating the overall OER performance of the corresponding TMP carbon nanocomposites. This methodology can be extended to control the morphology of other MOFs and their derivatives, providing innovative avenues for the design and synthesis of new MOF-based TMP nanomaterials.
