Transition metal sulfides exhibit a high theoretical specific capacity and have great potential to be used as a negative electrode material for lithium-ion batteries, but they are prone to produce volume expansion during the cycle process, which leads to the disintegration of the electrode material structure and affects the battery performance. This paper reports the synthesis of high-performance electrode materials, Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 /WSCC, a composite of Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 nanocages, and wheat straw cellulose carbon (WSCC) by a simple hydrothermal method. This composite structure has the following advantages: (1) two metal sulfides, Ni 3 S 2 and Co 9 S 8 , are introduced simultaneously through the synthesis of nanocages, which can increase the defects and active sites at the interface. At the same time, the nanocage structure helps to buffer the volume change during ion insertion and detachment and promote ion diffusion. (2) The biomass carbon material as a substrate not only plays a supporting role, but also reduces the agglomeration of nanocages, making them have better dispersion. Using it as a lithium-ion battery anode, it has a specific capacity of 535.8 mAh g −1 after 300 cycles at 1 C.

Improving the Pt atoms utilization efficiency on self-supported electrodes is crucial for industrial seawater hydrogen production , but effective strategies are still lacking. Herein, we reported a novel strategy to anchor highly surface-exposed Pt single atoms on Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 with abundant S vacancies (Pt–Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 –Sv) as a self-supported electrode. Physical characterizations and theoretical calculations confirm that the strong Pt–S electron bridges with the coordinating role of surface S vacancies triggers the d -orbital electron rearrangements and regulates the local electron structures between the Co/Ni and Pt sites. Notably, the Pt–Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 –Sv electrode displays an ultralow overpotential of 18 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline seawater . More importantly, our Pt–Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 –Sv electrode assembled into an alkaline electrolysis cell can work continuously for 50 h under alkaline seawater @ 60 °C. This work provides a promising strategy for designing highly surface-exposed single-atomic catalyst for large-scale hydrogen evolution through seawater electrolysis.

Metal sulfides are regarded as promising candidates for electrocatalytic applications owing to their highly conductive metal sulfide frameworks serving as the core and high-valence metal active layers functioning as the shell during the electrooxidation process. However, the catalytic ability of a single metal sulfide still needs to be optimized. Herein, a straightforward hydrothermal sulfidation approach was employed to fabricate a uniquely structured electrode composed of Ni3S2–Co9S8 heterojunction embedded in interconnected cobalt layered double hydroxide nanosheets grown on nickel foam (NF) (Ni3S2–Co9S8/Co LDH/NF). The Ni3S2–Co9S8/Co LDH/NF electrode demonstrated a low overpotential (240 mV at 10 mA cm–2) and a small Tafel slope (35.1 mV/dec) in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Furthermore, it exhibited a small Tafel slope (15.5 mV/dec) in the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) oxidation reaction, achieving nearly 100% conversion of HMF and an approximately 86% yield of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). The synthesis of Co LDH nanostructure on nickel foam facilitated the dispersion of the Ni3S2–Co9S8 heterojunction, thereby exposing more active sites and enhancing the mass transfer. Additionally, experimental results revealed that the electronic interactions at interfaces enabled precise adjustment of the electronic structure while promoting the formation of high-valence nickel species. Electrochemical measurements verified that the multiphase composite structure fabricated by interface engineering effectively reduced the interfacial impedances and charge transfer resistances, which in turn improved electrocatalytic performances for the OER and HMF oxidation reaction. This research provides a method for constructing a structure-optimized metal sulfide-based electrocatalyst, which can efficiently drive both the OER and oxidative HMF valorization.

Herein, we fabricate N-doped porous Ni3S2–Co9S8/carbon aerogels (Ni3S2–Co9S8/NCAs) using carrageenan/NiCo-metal–organic framework (MOF) hydrogels as the precursor via the high-temperature carbonization route with excellent electrocatalytic properties for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The electrochemical measurements indicate that the Ni3S2–Co9S8/NCA as a quintessential electrocatalyst exhibits excellent OER performance, which has outperformed most transition metal sulfide (TMS) catalysts in alkaline environments, as attested with a lower overpotential of 337 mV at 10 mA cm–2 and a smaller Tafel slope of 77 mV dec–1. Meanwhile, a Zn–air battery based on Ni3S2–Co9S8/NCA + Pt/C achieves a large power density of up to 256 mW cm–2 (and 193 mW cm–2), small charge/discharge voltage gap, and good cycling stability, notably better than the conventional RuO2 + Pt/C-based Zn–air batteries. These excellent electrocatalytic properties are mainly attributed to the distinct hierarchical porous structure and interfacial synergy between the Ni3S2 and Co9S8 nanoparticle structure with rich defects, facilitating the mass transport and high graphitization degree beneficial for electron mobility. It is envisioned that the research provides a novel approach for the exploration of marine biomass as an electrocatalyst.

Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 composite is synthesized with nanosheet-wrapped irregular structures. • CV activation process and mechanism of the composite is disclosed in KOH solution. • CV activation induces the formation of well-defined hierarchical spherical structure. • The activated product presents a maximum capacitance of 4.30 F cm −2 at 1 A g −1 . A free-standing Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 composite with nanosheet-wrapped irregular structures is fabricated on nickel foam (NF) framework. Compared with pristine Ni 3 S 2 , the specific capacitance of Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 increases to 2.62 F cm −2 from 1.99 F cm −2 , confirming a superior electrochemical activity of the composite. To further enhance the electrochemical performance and reveal the electrochemical activation behavior of the Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 composite, cyclic voltammetry (CV) activation strategy is employed by inducing the reconstruction of electrode materials in KOH solution. The CV activation triggers the dissolution of sulfur species and the formation of amorphous Ni/Co (oxy)hydroxides. The activated product achieves its maximum areal capacitance of 4.30 F cm −2 at 1 A g −1 after 200 cycles, resulting in a well-defined spherical structure consisted of interconnected ultrathin nanosheets. The capacitance enhancement can be ascribed to hierarchical spherical structure and the optimized composition, which provide abundant active sites and facilitate ion diffusion and charge transfer. When configured as an asymmetric supercapacitor, the device comprising the Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 composite and activated carbon exhibits a specific capacitance of 175.6 F g −1 , and the highest energy density reaches 62.44 Wh kg −1 . The Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 composite shows significant potential as a high-performance electrode material for advanced supercapacitor applications. A Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 composite with a nanosheet-wrapped irregular morphology is grown on Ni foam. CV activation dissolves sulfur species and forms amorphous Ni/Co (oxy)hydroxides with a hierarchical spherical structure, achieving a maximum areal capacitance of 4.30 F cm −2 at 1 A g −1 . Transition metal sulfides (TMSs) hold immense promise for high-performance supercapacitors due to their rich redox chemistry and exceptional theoretical capacitance. However, their practical realization is severely hampered by intrinsically poor electronic conductivity and detrimental volumetric changes during cycling, which compromise rate performance and long-term stability. Herein, we rationally design and fabricate Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 heterostructures intimately anchored on conductive carbon nanofibers (CNFs). This unique architecture creates abundant heterointerfaces that induce synergistic charge redistribution, generating a robust built-in electric field. This field critically accelerates redox reaction kinetics and interfacial charge transfer, while the integrated CNF network ensures efficient electron pathways and buffers pulverization, thus maintaining structural integrity. Consequently, the optimized Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 @CNFs electrode delivers a specific capacitance of 1679F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 . Moreover, an assembled Ni 3 S 2 /Co 9 S 8 @CNFs//AC asymmetric supercapacitor achieves a energy density of 67.7 W kg −1 at power density of 750 W kg −1 , coupled with excellent cycling stability (96.2 % capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles). This work not only demonstrates a potent strategy for fabricating advanced TMS-based electrodes but also provides fundamental insights into heterointerface engineering for superior electrochemical energy storage, paving the way for next-generation high-energy–density devices.

The design of advanced supercapacitors requires electrode materials that combine high surface area with a developed hierarchical porous structure to facilitate ion transport and electrolyte permeability. Herein, we report a cross-linking and in situ sulfuration strategy for synthesizing nickel sulfide (Ni3S2) nanocrystal-attached cobalt sulfide (Co9S8) encapsulated on three-dimensional (3D) N-doped hierarchical porous carbon (Ni3S2@Co9S8/N-HPC). The Ni3S2@Co9S8/N-HPC composite was extensively studied using different characterization technologies. The results revealed that the obtained material integrated the advantages of a developed N-doped carbon framework (fast ion transport and excellent electrical conductivity) and transition metal sulfide species (high theoretical specific capacitance). Benefiting from the synergistic effect of a strawberry-like Ni3S2@Co9S8 structure and 3D interconnected hierarchical porous carbon, the resulting Ni3S2@Co9S8/N-HPC composite exhibited an ultrahigh attractive specific capacitance of 1970.5 F g−1 at a current density of 0.5 A g−1 and excellent cycling stability with a capacitance retention of 89.5% after 5000 cycles at 10 A g−1. In addition, an asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC) of Ni3S2@Co9S8/N-HPC//HPC was assembled in a 6 M KOH electrolyte. It delivered an energy density of 77.1 W h kg−1 at a power density of 263.3 W kg−1, and it remained as high as 36.1 W h kg−1 even at 25.9 kW kg−1. It is believed that the presented work opens up a new strategy to fabricate high-performance supercapacitor electrodes.
