Nanoarchitectonics of La-Doped Ni3S2/MoS2 Hetetostructural Electrocatalysts for Water Electrolysis

Wenxian Li,Zulin Sun,Riyue Ge,Jiancheng Li,Yiran Li,Julie M. Cairney,Rongkun Zheng,Ying Li,Sean Li,Qian Li,Bin Liu

MoS 2 with 2D structure shows efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance because undercoordinated Mo–S edges have ideal hydrogen adsorption free energy. MoS 2 usually does not satisfy the bifunctional catalysts because of the poor intrinsic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity. Herein, it is proposed to construct heterostructure with OER active components to induce efficient bifunctional catalytic activity along with heteroatom doping to modify the electronic structure to optimize the adsorption and desorption capabilities of reaction intermediates. La-doped Ni 3 S 2 /MoS 2 grown on nickel foam (La-NMS@NF) is synthesized as bifunctional catalyst taking advantage of the excellent OER performance of Ni 3 S 2 . La-NMS@NF evolves into nanoflower-like structures with the addition of La dopant, which provides abundant pore channels to facilitate mass transfer and exposure of active sites. Density functional calculations reveal that the La-doped Ni 3 S 2 /MoS 2 heterointerface can optimize the water adsorption and H * adsorption/desorption, improving the HER performance. The La-NMS@NF exhibits an overpotential of 154 and 300 mV for HER and OER at 100 mA cm −2 in 1.0 m KOH. Herein, a heteroatom-driven heterostructure activation strategy for electron rearrangement and structural evolution in electrocatalysts to decrease energy consumption in overall water splitting is demonstrated.

Boosting Reaction Kinetics through the Construction of Ni3S2–MoS2 Semicoherent Interfaces for Enhanced Electrochemical Overall Water Splitting

Jingjing Zhu,Yuying Feng,Jia hui Jiang,Tingting Huang,Juan Xiao,Qihao Wu,Guancheng Xu,Li Zhang

In recent years, the technology of electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production has garnered significant interest. Nonetheless, the kinetics associated with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are comparatively sluggish, thereby constraining the enhancement of water decomposition efficiency to a certain degree. In this paper, the Ni3S2-MoS2/ NF semicoherent heterostructure interface electrocatalyst with multistage nanosheet was synthesized by the hydrothermal method. At the material level, the structure adeptly incorporates a semicoherent interface with a multilayer nanosheet configuration. This design not only preserves the nanosheet morphology of the precursor but also facilitates the formation of folded nanoflowers, thereby increasing the active surface area and promoting the rapid transfer of electrons. Furthermore, it optimizes the electronic environment of the electrode through interface charge redistribution, thereby diminishing the adsorption of H by the strong S–H bonds and accelerating the reaction kinetics. Additionally, the structure achieves optimal lattice matching, which enhances ion diffusion and reduces the associated diffusion barrier. In a 1.0 M KOH solution, the catalyst showed excellent performance in both the OER and HER. In situ Raman spectroscopy demonstrated that Ni–OOH serves as the true active site for the OER. This study provides a new idea for the precise design of bifunctional HER and OER electrocatalysts.

Co-Construction of Sulfur Vacancies and Heterogeneous Interface into Ni3S2/MoS2 Catalysts to Achieve Highly Efficient Overall Water Splitting

Zhaoyang An,Hui Xue,Jing Sun,Niankun Guo,Tianshan Song,Jiawen Sun,Yi-Ru Hao,Qin Wang

Integrating the advantages of anion vacancies and heterostructures into the catalytic materials may increase the binding affinities to intermediates, provide more active sites, and significantly promote the activity of overall water splitting. However, the successful assembly of anion vacancies and heterostructures for high-efficiency water splitting performance is still challenging. In this work, we ingeniously present the co-construction of sulfur vacancies and heterogeneous interface into Ni 3 S 2 /MoS 2 catalysts on nickel foam (NF). The introduction of sulfur vacancies and Ni 3 S 2 /MoS 2 heterostructures can significantly improve electron and ion transport, effectively improve structural stability, and enhance overall water splitting activity. The obtained V S -Ni 3 S 2 /MoS 2 catalysts (V S stands for sulfur vacancies) exhibit superior OER and HER activities, and the overpotentials for OER and HER are 180 and 71 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 , respectively. Furthermore, a low water splitting voltage of 1.46 V is required at 10 mA·cm −2 for the V S -Ni 3 S 2 /MoS 2 catalysts, which is considerably lower than most that of water splitting electrocatalysts currently reported. This work offers an effective mean for the preparation of catalysts with both anion vacancies and heterostructures for achieving high-performance alkaline overall water splitting.

An efficient hydrogen evolution catalyst constructed using Pt-modified Ni3S2/MoS2 with optimized kinetics across the full pH range

Maoyuan Li,Zhongrui Yu,Zulin Sun,Yuchen Liu,Simiao Sha,Jiancheng Li,Riyue Ge,Liming Dai,Bin Liu,Qingqiao Fu,Wenxian Li

Electrocatalyst materials play a crucial role in determining the efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), directly influencing the overall effectiveness of energy conversion technologies. Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructures hold substantial promise as bifunctional catalysts, owing to their synergistic electronic characteristics and plentiful active sites. However, their catalytic efficacy is impeded by the relatively elevated chemisorption energy of hydrogen-containing intermediates, which constrains their functionality in different pH environments. In order to mitigate this limitation, trace amounts of Pt are introduced into the heterostructure, intending to enhance electronic transport and refining chemisorption energies, thereby facilitating significant enhancements in both HER and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities over a wide pH range. It is revealed that the Pt-modified catalyst achieves exceptional HER performance, requiring merely 64 mV and 83 mV overpotentials to attain a current density of 100 mA cm−2 in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. Furthermore, theoretical simulations corroborate that Pt modification optimizes local electronic configurations and augments electronic transfer, contributing to its superior catalytic performance. This investigation underscores the pivotal role of Pt modification in propelling the practical application of Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructures as highly efficient and pH-universal bifunctional catalysts.

Amino-Tethered Ni3S2/MoS2 Heterojunction for Coupling Electrochemical 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Oxidation with 4-Nitrophenol Hydrogenation

Tao Chen,Yulong Li,Fangpei Ma,Mingdong Sun,Ping Fu,Xiaoling Liu,Yu Zhou,Jun Wang

Paired electrocatalytic systems have emerged as a promising approach for the synthesis of high-value-added fine chemicals from renewable resources like biomass, however, a high-performing bifunctional catalyst is urgent to reduce the overall cell voltage and enhance the current efficiency. Herein, amino-tethered Ni3S2/MoS2 heterojunction (NiMoSx-NH2) was constructed as the bifunctional catalyst simultaneously for the anodic 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation into furan dicarboxylic acid and cathodic 4-nitrophenol hydrogenation into P-aminophenol, providing the high conversion/yield/Faradic efficiency above 98% on both electrodes. Amino-tethered Ni3S2/MoS2 heterojunction, on the one hand, accelerated the electron transfer, and on the other hand, promoted the catalysts’ proton-coupled electron transfer process to generate NiIII-O(OH)ad at the anode and H* desorption at the cathode. A highly efficient paired electrolyzer with NiMoSx-NH2 as a bifunctional catalyst was assembled, showing an extremely low cell voltage of 0.89 V at 10 mA cm-2 and ~200% current efficiency at 1.75 V for the overall reaction.

Self-supported Ni3S2@MoS2 core/shell nanorod arrays via decoration with CoS as a highly active and efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution reactions

Wenqing Lu,Ye Song,Meiling Dou,Jing Ji,Feng Wang

A hierarchically porous MoS 2 on Ni 3 S 2 nanorod array on Ni foam (MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NF) was firstly fabricated through a simple microwave-assisted hydrothermal method , and then followed by electrochemical deposition approach in which MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /Ni foam is decorated with CoS (CoS MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NF). In contrast to conventional hydrothermal approach, microwave irradiation accelerates the synthesis of MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /Ni foam from time of >20 h–2 h. The characterization of CoS MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NF by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) indicate that a whole scale of 1D the Ni 3 S 2 nanorods were hierarchically integrated with MoS 2 and CoS nanosheets . The as-synthesized CoS MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NF hybrid not only endows the ease transport of electrons along Ni 3 S 2 nanorods to Ni foam, but also accommodates maximal exposure of active edge sites to the reactants through hierarchically porous CoS doped MoS 2 nanosheets , accomplishing the promoted kinetics and activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). By electrochemical measurements such as linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscope (EIS), we find that the CoS MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NF hybrid shows markedly enhanced electrochemical performance for both HER and OER. Specifically, the optimal CoS MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NF 8C possesses the low overpotentials (η 10 ) of 85 and 225 mV at current density (|j|) of 10 mA cm −2 in 1.0 M KOH and the small 62.3 and 46.1 mV dec −1 Tafel slope for HER and OER, respectively, outperforming those of most of the current noble metal-free electrocatalysts . These results highlight the fact that CoS MoS 2 /Ni 3 S 2 /NF is a high-performance, noble-metal-free electro-catalyst, and provide a potential avenue toward achieving an enhanced electrocatalytic activity towards both in HER and OER. Yet the duration of the as prepared catalyst in OER still need to be improved.

Highly efficient hydrogen evolution of Ni3S2-MoS2@CoMoO4/NF from in situ reaction of metal-organic framework in alkaline media

Yong Liu,Yekai Zhang,Mengbi Zhang,Hong Zhong,Zhanfang Cao,Liqing Li

Background Hydrogen energy, as the most promising renewable resource in the future, is severely limited in its development due to electrocatalysts, so the preparation of highly efficient and low-cost non-precious-metal catalysts is crucial for large-scale hydrogen production via electrolysis of water. Methods Herein, Ni 3 S 2− MoS 2 @CoMoO 4 /NF was successfully synthesized for the first time by in situ ion-exchange reaction and sulfidation reaction using Co-MOF/NF as a template. Significant Findings The electrochemical tests revealed that the overpotential was only 62.4 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , which was similar to that of the noble metal Pt sheet electrode, the long-term durability of the catalysts was more than 24 h at a constant potential, which demonstrated that the catalysts possessed excellent HER performance in alkaline media. In addition, XPS, SEM, XRD, and Raman characterization also demonstrated the successful growth and loading of Ni 3 S 2 , MoS 2 , and CoMoO 4 . In this study, transition metal sulfides and transition metal sulfide complexes with good electrochemical properties were prepared using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors, providing a new idea for the preparation of HER catalysts with high activity in alkaline media.

Tuning morphology and interfacial bonding environment of three-phase Ni3S2/MoS2/Co2P heterojunction for urea-assisted energy-saving hydrogen production at ampere-level current density

Lei Wang,Jiao Yu,Wen Sun,Lida Wang,Zhengqing Yang,Guichang Liu

A major significance persists in the construction of cost-effective electrocatalysts possessing both outstanding activity and robust durability for water and urea electrolysis, which is essential for realizing energy-saving hydrogen evolution. However, it is still challenging to explore bifunctional electrocatalysts under ampere-level current density. Herein, we report the construction of a three-phase heterojunction electrocatalyst with bifunctional activity toward both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR), achieved through the deliberate tuning of morphological features and electronic configurations. Through local bonding environment engineering at the heterointerface, the unique heterostructure effectively accelerates electron transfer and interfacial interactions, leading to significantly improved reaction kinetics and intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the multi-heterostructure promotes electron migration and interfacial coupling via the concerted regulation of the electronic configuration, d-band center position, and density of states (DOS). These modifications collectively lower the chemisorption free energies of reaction intermediates, thereby accelerating the dissociation of both water and urea molecules. As a result, the heterojunction electrocatalyst exhibits ultralow potentials of −0.198 and 1.41 V to reach 1000 mA cm −2 for HER and UOR, respectively. Notably, when employed as a urea-assisted electrolyzer, the system achieves a cell voltage of 1.58 V at 500 mA cm −2 , which is 200 mV less than that required for conventional water electrolysis. Furthermore, the UOR-HER electrolyzer exhibits robust operational stability, sustaining 500 mA cm −2 for 100 h without significant degradation. Collectively, this study establishes a novel and practically viable route toward low-energy-consumption hydrogen production. Fazal Badshah,Faiz mahmood,Dong-Yan Lu,Muhammad Afzaal,Muhammad Imran,Sabirov Sardor,Ruziyev Islambay Samandarovich

The cyclic life, rate performance, specific energy, and electrochemical sensing of electrode materials can be enhanced by tuning their nanostructures and compositions. Herein, the chemical vapor deposition technique was used to make direct deposition of MoS 2 nanosheets and Ni 3 S 2 /MoS 2 nanospheres on hierarchical nickel foam.
