Iron-incorporated Ni4Mo Hierarchical Nanorod Arrays for Promoted Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Lina Hu,Xinyu Sun,Ying Wang,Yang Liu,Shiqing Zhang,Fang Liu,Ying Li,Yanming Xue,Jun Zhang,Chengchun Tang

Graphical We report the synthesis of iron (Fe)-doped Ni 4 Mo intermetallic compound with hierarchical nanorod assemblies on nickel foam, which significantly improve the catalytic performance for OER. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation shows that the addition of Fe can significantly reduce the adsorption energy of the intermediate, thus facilitating the OER activity. It is great significance to explore rich and efficient transition metal-based electrocatalysts for the electrolysis of water. Nickel-molybdenum (Ni−Mo) alloy is considering as one of the most promising electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) in alkaline electrolyte, but its catalytic performance for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is still unsatisfactory. Heteroatom doping by interfering with the electronic structure of the catalysts has been considered to be an effective method to enhance electrocatalytic activities. Herein, we report the synthesis of iron (Fe)-doped Ni 4 Mo intermetallic compound with hierarchical nanorod assemblies on nickel foam by hydrothermal and hydrogen-induced methods, which significantly improve the catalytic performance for OER. The as-prepared Fe−Ni 4 Mo/NF shows remarkable activity for alkaline oxygen evolution reaction, requiring only a low overpotential of 271 mV to achieve a current density of 100 mA cm −2 . Such performance is significantly better than that of pristine Ni 4 Mo/NF with overpotential of 400 mV. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation shows that the addition of Fe can significantly reduce the adsorption energy of the intermediate on the catalyst surface, thus facilitating the OER activity. Moreover, an alkaline electrolyzer composed of Fe−Ni 4 Mo/NF as cathode and anode can provide 10 mA cm −2 current density with only 1.48 V extremely low voltage, and shows excellent long-term durability of 24 h. These results highlight a heteroatom incorporation engineering strategy into metallic alloys for electrochemical applications.

Strong electronic metal-support interaction of Ni4Mo/N-SrMoO4 promotes alkaline hydrogen electrocatalysis

Lulu Li,Fenyang Tian,Fengyu Wu,Longyu Qiu,Shuo Geng,Menggang Li,Zhaoyu Chen,Weiwei Yang,Yequn Liu,Yongsheng Yu

Ni 4 Mo electrocatalyst stands out as the promising candidate for hydrogen evolution/oxidation reaction (HER/HOR), yet the intensive hydrogen adsorption leads to sluggish kinetics, decreasing hydrogen catalysis efficiency. Herein, the structure of Ni 4 Mo nanoparticles anchored on wafer-biscuit-like N-SrMoO 4 nanorods (Ni 4 Mo/N-SrMoO 4 ) is developed to accelerate reaction kinetics by modulating electronic structure. The designed N-SrMoO 4 support enables strong electronic metal-support interaction with Ni 4 Mo, resulting in a downward shift of d -band center and achieving thermally neutral hydrogen adsorption. Ni 4 Mo/N-SrMoO 4 exhibits HER performance with an ultralow overpotential of 15 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , superior to Pt/C ( η 10 =18 mV). The outstanding exchange current density of 10.2 mA cm −2 for HOR is three times higher than that of Pt/C (3.5 mA cm −2 ). Ni 4 Mo/N-SrMoO 4 is further assembled in anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer (AEMWE), resulting in a current density of 100 mA cm −2 at voltage of 1.71 V and the excellent stability of 300 hours. Theoretical calculations and in-situ spectroscopy indicate that the introduction of Sr in N-SrMoO 4 effectively enhances electronic metal-support interaction, facilitates the enrichment of adsorbed hydroxyl (OH ads ) on active sites and weakens hydrogen adsorption on Ni 4 Mo, thereby accelerating reaction kinetics of hydrogen electrocatalysis.

Interstitial boron-doped Ni4Mo nanoarray catalyst boosts stable hydrogen evolution reaction

Pengfei Liu,Yue Shi,Xin Zhang,Jiao Yin,Dan Zhang,Tiantian Wang,Jiawei Fei,Tianrong Zhan,Guangjiu Li,Jianping Lai,Lei Wang

Designing a strategy to make the intrinsic activity of NiMo-based catalysts while being able to achieve long-term stable hydrogen production at ampere-level current densities is important for their development in AEM electrolyzers. Herein, interstitial boron atom-doped Ni 4 Mo is designed to obtain the catalyst with excellent alkaline HER properties. B 4.7 -Ni 4 Mo/NF exhibits a small overpotential of 135.2 mV at 1000 mA cm −2 and a high turnover frequency (TOF) value of 6.14 s −1 at 100 mV in alkaline HER, which very close to that of Pt/C (6.86 s −1 ). The catalyst requires only 1.73 V to achieve a current density of 1.0 A cm −2 in AEM electrolyzer at 60 °C and is stable for 800 h. Experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that interstitial boron doping not only optimizes the electronic structure to optimize H* adsorption and promote the water dissociation but also inhibits the dissolution of Mo by forming boron-metal bond.

The Degradation Mechanism of Nonprecious Ni4Mo-MoO2 Cathode during Intermittent Alkaline Water Electrolysis

Linting Cheng,Xinmiao Wang,Tingting Li,Weihao Sha,Shiqiang Wang,MengBai Ma,Tianrun Yuan,Yongmei Chen,Pingyu Wan,Yang Tang

Developing efficient and durable nonprecious cathodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for industrial alkaline water electrolysis (AWE). NiMo-based materials are among the highly active nonprecious HER electrocatalysts at present and are expected to replace noble-metal catalysts. However, their practical application is hindered by the performance degradation under the industrial operating conditions, especially fluctuating conditions imposed by an intermittent renewable power supply. This study systematically carried out a series of experiments and elucidated the degradation mechanisms of the NiMo-based cathode (Ni4Mo-MoO2) during intermittent AWE. First, the dissolved oxygen that inevitably diffuses from the anode to the cathode chemically corrodes the NiMo catalyst in concentrated alkaline electrolyte at high temperature, thus reducing active sites and leaching critical components, notably Mo. Simultaneously, the reverse current generated during start–stop operations induces anodic polarization of the NiMo cathode, accelerating its degradation through electrochemical oxidation. Moreover, driven by external gas–liquid flow scouring and internal stress from redox-induced phase transformation, the catalyst layer separates from the substrate, leading to serious mechanical detachment. These factors collectively cause severe degradation in the activity of the NiMo cathode. This work provides important guidelines for developing next-generation nonprecious metal cathodes with lasting stability.

Efficient Self-Powered Overall Water Splitting by Ni4Mo/MoO2 Heterogeneous Nanorods Trifunctional Electrocatalysts

Ran Xiao,Fenfen Wang,Li Luo,Xincheng Yao,Yongchao Huang,Zhongmin Wang,M.-Sadeeq Balogun

The exploration of cost-effective multifunctional electrodes with high activity toward energy storage and conversion systems, such as self-powered alkaline water electrolysis, is very meaningful, although studies remain quite limited. Herein, a heterogeneous nickel-molybdenum (NiMo)-based electrode is fabricated for the first time as a trifunctional electrode for asymmetric supercapacitor (ASC), hydrogen evolution reaction, and oxygen evolution reaction. The trifunctional electrode consists of Ni 4 Mo and MoO 2 (denoted Ni 4 Mo/MoO 2 ) with hierarchical nanorod heterostructure and abundant heterogeneous nanointerfaces creating sufficient active sites and efficient charge transfer for achieving high performance self-power electrochemical devices. The ASC consists of the as-prepared Ni 4 Mo/MoO 2 positive electrode, showing a broad potential window of 1.6 V, and a maximum energy density of 115.6 Wh kg −1 , while the alkaline overall water splitting (OWS) assembled using the as-prepared Ni 4 Mo/MoO 2 as bifunctional catalysts only requires a low cell voltage of 1.48 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in aqueous alkaline electrolyte. Finally, by integrating the Ni 4 Mo/MoO 2 -based ASC and OWS devices, an aqueous self-powered OWS is assembled, which self-power the OWS to generate hydrogen gas and oxygen gas, verifying great potential of the as-prepared Ni 4 Mo/MoO 2 for sustainable and renewable energy storage and conversion system.

Design of Ni/Ni4Mo Heterointerface for Highly Enhanced Glycerol-Assisted Hydrogen Production at Large Current Density

Zhize Yu,Tingting Tang,Yutao Cao,Shuo Cui,Min Li,Ying Wu,Wenhui Fang,Zengxi Li,Hong Zhao

Incorporating catalytic metals with alloy can significantly facilitate electrocatalysis of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through a synergistic effect. However, constructing an effective metal-alloy heterointerface remains a challenge. In this study, we synthesize a Ni/Ni4Mo catalyst on Ni foam (NF) through a straightforward two-step electrodeposition process. Initially, Ni4Mo is obtained using a constant potential deposition method. Then the incorporation of Ni leads to the formation of Ni/Ni4Mo heterointerface, increasing interfacial activity and exposing more active sites, thereby enhancing the electrocatalytic performance. The Ni/Ni4Mo@NF catalyst exhibits outstanding HER performance with low overpotentials of only 148 mV at 500 mA cm−2 and 24 mV at 100 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH. Furthermore, in a combined glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) and HER system, the Ni/Ni4Mo@NF||Ni/Ni4Mo@NF requires only 1.41 V to achieve a current density of 50 mA cm−2, a 260 mV reduction compared to conventional overall-water splitting. The Ni/Ni4Mo catalyst also demonstrates good long-term stability. This work provides key insights into designing high-performance metal-alloy heterointerface catalysts for energy-efficient hydrogen production.

Electrocatalytic upcycling of polyethylene terephthalate plastic to co-generated hydrogen and formate via a bifunctional Ni4Mo/Fe3O4 heterointerface

Lingmiao Fang,Huamei Tong,Mengyue Qi,Cheng Ye,Zhanpeng Fu,Yingxue Cui,Jianjun Zhu,Di Li,Deli Jiang

The introduction of a dual-reaction coupling mechanism that simultaneously integrates ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on two electrodes to selectively produce the target product is of great importance. By precisely controlling the composition and electronic structure of the catalyst, this study produced catalytic materials with specific morphologies, achieving long-term stability; furthermore, by integrating a water electrolysis strategy, the research simultaneously achieved low energy consumption and high Faradaic efficiency. The Ni 4 Mo/Fe 3 O 4 catalyst achieves outstanding EGOR activity with a current density of 50 mA cm −2 at 1.42 V vs . RHE and a Faraday efficiency of 97% for formate production. For HER, it exhibits a low overpotential of 60 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 67.46 mV dec −1 , surpassing most non-precious metal catalysts. Drawing on theoretical calculations, it is the electron coupling at the heterointerface and synergistic interactions between Ni and Mo sites that optimize the reaction pathway and lower the reaction energy barrier, thereby explaining the superior performance of Ni 4 Mo/Fe 3 O 4 . The work establishes interfacial engineering as a viable strategy for developing advanced bifunctional electrocatalysts, thereby addressing PET waste management and clean energy production sustainably.

Built-in Electric Field Enables Relay Catalysis in Ni4Mo/MoO2 Mott-Schottky Heterojunction for Selective Methanol-to-Formate Electrooxidation

Shuai He,Man Zhao,Ze Wang,Shili Fang,Yuhong Chang,Junming Zhang,Li Zhang,Haishun Wu,He Xiao,JianFeng Jia

Comprehensive Summary The selective electrooxidation of methanol to formate is a kinetically complex process involving multiple intermediates ( e.g ., *CH 3 O, *CHO, *OH), whose adsorption energies are difficult to regulate simultaneously. Here, we report a conceptually new electric-field-directed relay catalysis strategy based on a Ni 4 Mo/MoO 2 Mott-Schottky heterojunction. Using a combination of UPS, XPS, and XAFS, we demonstrate that the built-in electric field (BIEF) drives directional electron transfer from metallic Ni 4 Mo to semiconducting MoO 2 , creating spatially separated electron-deficient Ni sites and electron-rich MoO 2 interfaces. Operando FTIR and Raman spectroscopy directly visualize the dynamic evolution of intermediates, revealing a relay mechanism: Ni sites promote *CH 3 O adsorption and C–H/O–H bond cleavage, while MoO 2 enhances *OH supply to accelerate *CHO oxidation. DFT calculations confirm that this BIEF-mediated spatial decoupling lowers the energy barrier of the potential-determining step (*CHO → *HCOOH) from 1.96 eV (Ni 4 Mo) to only 0.76 eV. Consequently, the obtained catalyst achieves a peak current density of 345.2 mA·cm –2 with >97% Faradaic efficiency for formate. This work establishes a new paradigm for designing heterojunction electrocatalysts that leverage interfacial electric fields to orchestrate multi-step reaction pathways with high selectivity.

Effective modulating of the Mo dissolution and polymerization in Ni4Mo/NiMoO4 heterostructure via metal-metal oxide-support interaction for boosting H2 production

Yuhao Chen,Kaihang Yue,Jia-Wei Zhao,Zhengyang Cai,Xianying Wang,Ya Yan

Constructing low-cost, high-active and robust heterogeneous hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts with strong metal–metal oxide-support interaction (SMMOSI) is still an urgent challenge for the development of anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE), especially under high current density (e.g., 1 A cm −2 ). Herein, a hierarchical composite of heterogenous Ni 4 Mo/NiMoO 4 (NiMoO x ) nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on a mesoporous carbon CMK-3 (NiMoO x @CMK-3) is designed as a superior electrocatalyst for HER. Significantly, the strong interaction between heterogeneous NiMoO x NPs and CMK-3 supporting matrix effectively stabilize the catalytic active Ni 4 Mo/NiMoO 4 heterostructure by altering the local geometric and electronic structures, leading to maximumly exposure of active sites and promoted electron transfer ability. The optimized electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding HER activity with an extremely low overpotential and Tafel slope of 7 mV@10 mA cm −2 and 27.7 mV dec -1 , respectively, and can steadily operate at 100 mA cm −2 for 800 h. More significantly, owing to these HER merits, the AEMWE configuration with NiMoO x @CMK-3 (−) is also designed, resulting in low cell voltage of 1.965 V@1 A cm −2 and negligible degradation over 400 h@1 A cm −2 . Further ex/in-situ electrochemical spectra evidence that both the partial combined MoO 4 2- from NiMoO 4 and the newly formed MoO 4 2- originating from dissolved Mo in NiMoO x @CMK-3 could boost the fast generation of polymerized Mo 2 O 7 2- that could effectively accelerate the HER process in alkaline conditions by facilitating the formation of active Mo-H* intermediates. Moreover, theoretical calculation results demonstrate the upshifting of d-band center of Mo toward Fermi level for the heterogeneous NiMoO x and the strong charge distribution between the heterointerface could optimize adsorption free energies of H* (ΔG H* ) on the surface of Mo atoms.

Transition Metal/Metal Oxide Interface (Ni–Mo–O/Ni4Mo) Stabilized on N-Doped Carbon Paper for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Conditions

Zeqi Jin,Lan Wang,Tao Chen,Junmei Liang,Qicheng Zhang,Wenchao Peng,Yang Li,Fengbao Zhang,Xiaobin Fan

Designing hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts with high performance in alkaline conditions is important for reducing energy consumption during water electrolysis. This study reports an electrodeposition–calcination–electrodeposition strategy to construct the Ni–Mo–O/Ni4Mo nanointerface on an N-doped carbon support derived from polyaniline on carbon fiber paper. The N-doped carbon support not only stabilizes the metal/metal oxide nanointerface but also generates more active intrinsic sites and electrical conductivity via the metal–N interaction. The obtained Ni–Mo–O/Ni4Mo@NC displays a low overpotential of only 61 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 for alkaline HER in 1 M KOH.
