Tailoring the interactions of heterostructured Ni4N/Ni3ZnC0.7 for efficient CO2 electroreduction

Junjie Wang,Zhao Li,Zhaozhao Zhu,Jinxia Jiang,Yulan Li,Jinju Chen,Xiaobin Niu,Jun Song Chen,Rui Wu

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction into CO has been regarded as one of the most promising strategies for sustainable carbon cycles at ambient conditions, but still faces challenges to achieve both high product selectivity and large current density. Here, we report a Ni 4 N/Ni 3 ZnC 0.7 heterostructured electrocatalyst embedded in accordion-like N-doped carbon through a simple molten salt annealing strategy. The optimal Ni 4 N/Ni 3 ZnC 0.7 electrocatalyst achieves a high CO Faraday efficiency of 92.3% and a large total current density of −15.8 mA cm −2 at −0.8 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, together with a long-term stability about 30 h. Density functional theory results reveal that the energy barrier for *COOH intermediate formation largely decreased on Ni 4 N/Ni 3 ZnC 0.7 heterostructure compared with Ni 4 N and Ni 3 ZnC 0.7 , thus giving rise to enhanced activity and selectivity. A rechargeable Zn-CO 2 battery is further assembled with Ni 4 N/Ni 3 ZnC 0.7 catalyst as the cathode, which shows a maximum power density of 0.85 mW cm −2 and excellent stability.

Recycling spent ternary cathodes into multi-heterogeneous Ni4N/Co5.47N/MnO composite catalysts enable efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Hongfei Jiang,Ruirui Wang,Hanhua Liu,Qianqian Liu,Miao Cheng,Wujun Ma,Jing Hu,Tao Wei,Zeda Meng,Bo Liu,Muzi Chen,Wanfei Li

Fabricating efficient electrocatalysts for water splitting through recycling ternary (LiNi 1-x-y Mn x Co y O 2 ) cathodes of spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is promising and sustainable, however, the relative reasonable phase composition and microstructure still need be explored. Herein, a composite material composed of multi-heterogeneous Ni 4 N/Co 5.47 N/MnO nanoparticles coupled with porous carbon fibers was fabricated through a direct carbothermal reduction process of waste LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.2 Co 0.3 O 2 (NCM523) cathodes material dispersed into nitrogenous spinning precursor. Interestingly, this optimized material obtained at 800 °C (NCM523@CF-800) possesses abundant Ni 4 N/Co 5.47 N/MnO multi-heterostructure, endowing it with multifaceted advantages as electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Specifically, the unique structural features of multi-heterostructure promote the transfer of electrons/charges on the interface, and highly enhance the reaction kinetics. Additionally, during OER process, because of the protection of carbon matrix, Ni 4 N/Co 5.47 N/MnO has the mere surface reconstruction and forms the real active oxygen-containing species especial NiOOH. And the maintained core of Ni 4 N/Co 5.47 N/MnO provides high conductivity for the formed active oxygen-containing species. As a result, the optimized NCM523@CF-800 employed as OER electrocatalyst in water electrolysis only require 271 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH. Meanwhile, an excellent stability of 140 h can be achieved under high current density of about 160 mA cm −2 . This work may pave the way for the rapid and efficient recycling and utilization of spent battery electrode materials.

Trace rare earth modulated tetranickel nitride embedded in mesoporous carbon as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

Fangfei Lv,Yiming Yan,Zhongcai Ma,Yibing Guo,Wei Wu,Suwen Li,Lili Huo

The sluggish kinetics of anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has been the restricted factor for large-scale hydrogen production from water electrolysis. Exploring highly efficient OER electrocatalysts is essential to varied renewable energy storage and conversion devices. In this work, we designed and fabricated subminiature tetranickel nitride (Ni 4 N) nanocrystallines modulated by trace amounts of rare earth (RE) encapsulated in ultrathin mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon shells (RE-Ni 4 N@mesoNC) derived from ultrathin layered hydroxide nanosheets as highly active and stable electrocatalysts for the OER in water spilling. In view of the advantages of excellent electrical conductivity, adjustable surface electronic structure and a high density of utilizable active sites, the as-synthesized RE-Ni 4 N@mesoNC electrodes exhibit more superior performance than RE-free Ni 4 N@mesoNC and commercial IrO 2 . The optimal La–Ni 4 N@mesoNC achieved a lower overpotential of 330 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a smaller Tafel slope of 66 mV·dec −1 . And the La–Ni 4 N@mesoNC electrode also exhibit the excellent stability of continuous 72 h i-t tests and the overlapped polarization curve before and after 3000 consecutive CV cycles.

Cation Exchange in Colloidal Transition Metal Nitride Nanocrystals

Lei Yang,Liping Zhang,Ye Li,Byoung-Hoon Lee,Jiheon Kim,Hyeon Seok Lee,Jinsol Bok,Yanbo Ma,Wansheng Zhou,Du Yuan,An-Liang Wang,Megalamane S. Bootharaju,Hemin Zhang,Taeghwan Hyeon,Junze Chen

Transition metal nitride (TMN)-based nanostructures have emerged as promising materials for diverse applications in electronics, photonics, energy storage, and catalysis due to their highly desirable physicochemical properties. However, synthesizing TMN-based nanostructures with designed compositions and morphologies poses challenges, especially in the solution phase. The cation exchange reaction (CER) stands out as a versatile postsynthetic strategy for preparing nanostructures that are otherwise inaccessible through direct synthesis. Nevertheless, exploration of the CER in TMNs lags behind that in metal chalcogenides and metal phosphides. Here, we demonstrate cation exchange in colloidal metal nitride nanocrystals, employing Cu3N nanocrystals as starting materials to synthesize Ni4N and CoN nanocrystals. By controlling the reaction conditions, Cu3N@Ni4N and Cu3N@CoN core@shell heterostructures with tunable compositions can also be obtained. The Ni4N and CoN nanocrystals are evaluated as catalysts for the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Remarkably, CoN nanocrystals demonstrate superior OER performance with a low overpotential of 286 mV at 10 mA·cm–2, a small Tafel slope of 89 mV·dec–1, and long-term stability. Our CER approach in colloidal TMNs offers a new strategy for preparing other metal nitride nanocrystals and their heterostructures, paving the way for prospective applications.

High electron transfer efficiency accordion-shaped HNiZn heterostructure nanozyme for low-temperature photo-catalytic enhanced therapy of bacterial infection wounds

Hanjie Wang,Xinqi Guo,Ying Tan,Junxu Yang,Yuting Ye,Miao Mo,Yanling Liang,Guanhua Li,Zhangrui Huang,Li Zheng,Xiaofei Ding,Jingping Zhong,Jinmin Zhao

Bacterial and drug-resistant bacterial infections pose significant challenges to the treatment of skin wounds. Among various non-antibiotic strategies, nanozymes which mimic the activities of natural bioenzymes and possess broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, hold promise for antibacterial therapy in infected wounds. However, the catalytic activity and biosafety of most current nanozymes remain insufficient to meet clinical requirements. Herein, we innovatively synthesized novel heterostructured nanozymes (HNiZn) comprising Ni 4 N/Ni 3 ZnC 0.7 embedded in accordion-shaped nitrogen-doped carbon using a simple molten-salt pyrolysis method. Combined with injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) as a carrier, these nanozymes facilitate low-temperature (43.5°C) photocatalytic and photothermal therapy for bacterially infected wounds. Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the Ni 4 N/Ni 3 ZnC heterostructured nanozymes exhibit richer electron cloud distribution, stronger interactions between heterogeneous atoms, lower electron escape work function, stronger adsorption energy for free radicals, and electron transfer efficiency than individual Ni 4 N or Ni 3 ZnC phases, resulting in efficient peroxidase (POD)-like and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)-like activities. Additionally, HNiZn exhibits a high photothermal conversion efficiency (51.01%) under near infrared (NIR) irradiation. Through combined photocatalytic and photothermal effects, it effectively kills Escherichia coli ( E. coli ), clinically isolated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and their biofilms. Mechanistic studies using metabolomics analysis revealed that HNiZn induces bacterial apoptosis by disrupting bacterial biosynthesis and metabolism, affecting the cell cycle, and perturbing redox balance. In vivo experiments further confirmed the favorable biosafety and antibacterial efficacy of HNiZn, which promoted skin wound healing. This study provides a novel strategy for constructing effective nanozymes and treating bacterial infections.
