This study synthesized a NiCo₂O₄–bacterial cellulose (BC)–reduced graphene oxide (GO) composite material suitable for flexible supercapacitors using a two-step hydrothermal method. The BC@GO framework consisted of two carbon-based materials: BC retained a 3D interconnected nanofiber network after carbonization, while GO provided a layered structure. This multi-scale porous structure enabled high specific capacitance, mechanical flexibility, and electrochemical stability in the composite. In a three-electrode system, the composite material exhibited a specific capacitance of 1386.4 F g −1 at a current density of 1 A g −1 , with a capacitance retention rate of 73.4 % from 1 to 10 A g −1 . Finally, this study fabricated a high-performance semi-solid flexible asymmetric supercapacitor (FASC) using NiCo₂O₄/BC@GO as the cathode, activated carbon (AC) as the anode, and polyacrylic acid gel as the electrolyte. The fabricated NiCo₂O₄/BC@GO//AC FASC achieved a high energy density of 29.6 Wh kg −1 (19.7 Wh m −2 ) at 7948 W kg −1 (53 kW m −2 ) and 54.8 Wh kg −1 (365 Wh m −2 ) at 836 W kg −1 (5.6 kW m −2 ), with a capacitance retention of 92.2 % after 10,000 cycles. Two fully charged FASCs devices connected in series simultaneously powered 18 LED lights for approximately 50 s. The FASC exhibited exceptional specific capacitance and cycling stability, surpassing other controls in flexible mechanical performance, indicating its potential for flexible semi-solid supercapacitor applications.

Triethylamine, a typical volatile marker gas produced during food spoilage, serves as a key indicator of food freshness. Therefore, real-time monitoring of its concentration is of great significance for evaluating food freshness. We synthesize the NiCo 2 O 4 /ZnO using hydrothermal method for triethylamine detection. To characterize the as-prepared samples, XRD, XPS, SEM, XPS, and EIS are used. Among the pure NiCo 2 O 4 , ZnO, and NiCo 2 O 4 /ZnO, the NiCo 2 O 4 /ZnO exhibits (50.2) toward 30 ppm triethylamine, which is around six times higher than that of pure NiCo 2 O 4 at 250 °C. Furthermore, the NiCo 2 O 4 /ZnO composite exhibits rapid response-recovery kinetics, excellent humidity stability, and a favorable selectivity toward triethylamine. The enhanced gas-sensing performance can be attributed to the increased specific surface area, the formation of p–n heterojunctions, and the synergistic interaction between NiCo 2 O 4 and ZnO. These results indicate that the integration of NiCo 2 O 4 with ZnO to create NiCo 2 O 4 /ZnO emerges as an effective approach to enhance the sensing performance of triethylamine.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical challenge in electrochemical water splitting, necessitating the development of efficient catalysts. In this study, a room-temperature gas–liquid diffusion strategy is presented to synthesize rare earth-doped NiCo₂O₄ nanosheets on carbon paper (RE-NiCo₂O₄/CP, RE = La, Ce, Pr, Gd) as alkaline OER electrocatalysts. Among them, Ce-NiCo₂O₄/CP demonstrates catalytic activity, requiring an overpotential of only 265 mV to achieve a current density of 20 mA cm⁻² in 1 M KOH, which is lower than that of undoped NiCo₂O₄/CP (348 mV). Comprehensive characterization reveals that RE doping modulates the electronic structure of NiCo₂O₄, increasing the Co 3+ /Co 2+ ratio and optimizing intermediate adsorption. Notably, Ce doping facilitates the formation of highly active Ni(Co)OOH species during OER, further enhancing catalytic performance. Combination experiments and in-situ analysis confirmed that the increase in activity was due to the incorporation of rare earths, which enhanced the charge transfer of reaction intermediates and promoted the formation of highly active phases. This work not only presents a synthesis method for high-performance OER catalysts, but also elucidates the electronic modulation effect into the role of rare-earth elements in tuning electrocatalytic properties.

NiCo₂O₄@ZnWO₄ core-shell nanowire heterostructure with enhanced interfacial synergy. • Ultrahigh sensitivity and robust mechanical durability for pressure sensing. • Versatile human motion and physiological signal monitoring. • Dual-mode sunlight intensity detection and acoustic signal recognition. • High-performance non-enzymatic glucose sensing and wireless sweat analysis. With the growing demand among people with diabetes for multidimensional health management, sensors with multimodal sensing capabilities have become a hot topic of research. Inspired by wheat ears found in nature, this study employed a two-step hydrothermal method to synthesise NiCo₂O₄@ZnWO₄ core-shell heterojunction nanocomposites with a biomimetic wheat-ear-like microstructure, which were then utilised in multifunctional sensors. Owing to the synergistic effects of the hierarchical structure and the core-shell heterojunction, the sensor exhibits high sensitivity (1.48 × 10 8 kPa −1 ) and rapid response and recovery times (66/67 ms) within a pressure range of 18–100 kPa. It remains stable even after 10,000 cycles, enabling the real-time capture of movement signals from diabetic patients. Meanwhile, the strong charge transfer effect and abundant active sites at the NiCo₂O₄@ZnWO₄ interface enable the sensor to demonstrate high sensitivity (55.72 mA mM −1 cm −2 ), a wide linear range (1–1200 μM), and a low detection limit (0.22 μM, S/N = 3) in sweat glucose detection. Furthermore, the incorporation of ZnWO₄ endows the device with excellent responsiveness to UV irradiance within the range of 20–100 mW cm −2 . By deeply integrating biomimetic structural design with multimodal sensing capabilities, this study provides an effective strategy for diabetes health management. Alkaline water electrolysis is recognized as an environmentally sustainable approach for generating high-energy-density clean hydrogen. However, its efficiency remains largely limited by the sluggish kinetics water dissociation in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the challenge of activating water molecules, and the excessive consumption of OH − and high adsorption energy barriers of oxygenated intermediates during the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this work, A nanoneedle-structured Ru-NiCo₂O₄-Se electrocatalyst was developed, demonstrating excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic performance for both HER and OER. Through a combination of experimental characterizations and theoretical simulations, it had been revealed that the sharp-tip nanoneedle morphology generates intense local electric fields. These fields facilitate the enrichment of K + ions at the cathode, optimized the interfacial water structure, and substantially lower the energy barrier required for water dissociation. At the anode, the tip effect facilitated OH − accumulation, enhanced reactant mass transport, and accelerated OER kinetics. Moreover, metal–support interactions (MSI) between Ru nanoclusters and the support effectively modulate the adsorption behavior of H* and oxygenated intermediates, further boosting catalytic performance. The catalyst achieves overpotentials as low as −48 mV for HER and + 231 mV for OER at a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 , and delivers a high overall water splitting current of 100 mA·cm −2 at a cell voltage of only 1.7 V, along with remarkable long-term durability over hundreds of hours. This study presents an innovative strategy based on interfacial microenvironment engineering and electronic structure modulation, paving a fresh pathway for the development of cost-effective, high-performance, and long-lasting bifunctional electrocatalysts tailored for clean energy conversion.
