Exploiting magnesium-based hydrogen storage materials faces great challenges due to their inherent thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics. However, this issue can be mitigated by employing a catalyst doping modification strategy. In this work, a composite of titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene)-supported nickel fluoride (NiF 2 ) nanoparticles, known as NiF 2 @Ti 3 C 2 , was fabricated via the hydrothermal approach and utilized to reinforce the hydrogen storage performance of magnesium (Mg). It was shown that NiF 2 @Ti 3 C 2 composites have exceptional catalytic properties for Mg hydrogen storage. The Mg–NiF 2 @Ti 3 C 2 composite, containing 5 wt% of NiF 2 @Ti 3 C 2 , released 3.46 wt% of hydrogen at 300 °C, while pure Mg produced essentially little hydrogen in identical conditions. Additionally, there was a decrease in the activation energy of hydrogen desorption from 135.4 to 77.65 kJ mol −1 . Moreover, the composite offered excellent stability and reversible performance, achieving 95.8% capacity retention after 10 consecutive testing cycles. During the hydrogen uptake and release process, the NiF 2 @Ti 3 C 2 composite interacted with Mg/MgH 2 to produce the metals Ti 0 , MgF 2 , and Mg 2 Ni/Mg 2 NiH 4 , which acted as active species to boost the hydrogen storage performance of Mg.

Aluminum powder is widely used as a high-energy fuel in the domain of energetic materials, while the oxidation kinetics of Al is limited by the oxide shell on the particle surface which acts as a reaction barrier. Recently, transition metal fluorides have emerged as an intriguing type of fluorine-containing oxidizers which can improve reactivity of Al through interfacial fluorination. However, most previous research focused on micron-sized fluorides, while the reactivity of nanosized fluoride in energetic composite was rarely studied. In this work, nanosized NiF 2 (∼100 nm) was synthesized through a facile and safe approach, and it was coupled with nanosized and micron-sized Al powders to form energetic composites. Regardless of dimension of Al, Al/NiF 2 composite exhibited higher specific heat release, higher reaction efficiency, and lower reaction temperature than that of corresponding Al/NiO composite. Post-characterizations suggested that elemental Ni and AlF 3 were produced from the reaction of Al/NiF 2 composite at 710 °C, and AlF 3 was found to evaporate over 900 − 1050 °C. The long-term stability of energetic composites was evaluated through a real-time aging test for 12 months, and only slight energy degradation (<7.5 %) was founded in Al/NiF 2 composite. Concerning combustion behavior, Al/NiF 2 composite showed relatively low flame brightness but a comparable pressure generation compared to Al/NiO composite, which is presumably attributed by the endothermic evaporation of AlF 3 . A notable finding is that hybrid Al/NiF 2 /NiO composite exhibits superior pressure output, and this composite is rather explosive even for small charge amount, which shows the potential as a novel primary explosive.

Herein, NiF 2 artificial interface was proposed for the first time to enhance the electrochemical performances of LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 (NCM523) under 4.5 V. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images verify NiF 2 layer is successfully constructed on the surface of NCM523. The 1.0 wt% NiF 2 -modified NCM523 delivers a much higher capacity retention (86.9%) than pristine sample (69.0%) after 100 cycles under 4.5 V at 30 °C, even exceeding pristine NCM523 under 4.2 V (82.2%). Beyond that, the cycling stability of NCM523 under 4.5 V at 55 °C is also visibly improved due to the NiF 2 protective layer. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analyses confirm that NiF 2 suppresses the increase of interface resistance and therefore makes for the interface kinetics behaviors during cycling. In addition, the measurements of SEM, TEM and XPS support that the inhibition of the SEI (solid electrolyte interphase) growth can be attributed to the restrained side reactions between electrolyte and NCM523 by NiF 2 artificial layer at 4.5 V.

Alkaline water electrolysis is a low-cost method for large-scale and sustainable hydrogen production. However, slow kinetics of water dissociation in alkaline electrolyte limits the long-term stability and high-activity of the catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, non-noble metal based HER catalyst NiF3-NiF2/HNF (hydrophilic nickel foam), synthesized by electrodeposition and fluorination on nickel foam (NF), shows an excellent control over both the factors. The catalyst exhibits the 3D porous structure, in which super-hydrophilicity caused by HNF and local charge redistribution by the interaction between NiF2 and NiF3, makes the catalyst to present relatively a good performance for HER. An overpotential of only 50 mV and 177 mV is required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively. Under chronoamperometric test, current density of 10 mA cm−2 remains constant for 48 h, revealing the long-term stability of catalyst. Overall, this work gives a new paradigm in the design of high-performance non-noble metal based catalyst for HER in alkaline electrolyte.

NiF 2 /C composites were prepared through high energy mechanical milling, and the cyclic performance was characterized by discharge-charge measurements. Electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) for NiF 2 /C electrode were obtained at different potentials during initial discharge-charge cycle. The results revealed the typical EIS characteristics appeared with three semicircles in the Nyquist diagram at 1.6 V. An equivalent circuit was proposed to simulate the experimental EIS data, and it was found that the high frequency semicircle (HFS) is mainly caused by lithium-ion through the SEI film on the electrode surface, the middle frequency semicircle (MFS) should be related to the Schottky contact between NiF 2 and conductive agents, which may be the important feature of such composites materials with big band gap, Besides the low frequency arc (LFA) was observed as the charge transfer step. Consequently a modified model was proposed to explain the impedance response of NiF 2 /C electrode for lithium ion batteries.

It is of technological significance to construct efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen production. Here, a novel composite based on NiF2microspheres in situ grown on nickel foam (NiF2/NF) has been synthesized by a facile solvothermal procedure. Benefiting from the synergistic contribution of NiF2microspheres and NF substrate, the derived NiF2/NF composite demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in both acidic and alkaline media. Specifically, it can deliver current densities of 10, 100, and 300 mA cm−2at low overpotentials of only 40, 134, and 195 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4and 69, 132, and 175 mV in 1.0 M KOH. Furthermore, an alkaline electrolyzer assembled with NiF2/NF as both the cathode and anode only required a low cell voltage of 1.57 V to drive the current density of 10 mA cm−2for overall water splitting. This work proposed a new way for developing wide-pH HER electrocatalysts with high performance.

The dense oxide layer on the surface of aluminum (Al) particles is recognized as a major limitation to their combustion efficiency in solid propellants. Metal fluorides have emerged as promising combustion modifiers capable of enhancing Al reactivity through a catalytic-activation synergy. However, the systematic influence of NiF 2 content on this process remains poorly understood. In this work, the effect of NiF 2 content on the combustion performance of Al/AP composite fuels and hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB)-based propellants was systematically investigated. A series of composites and propellants with varying NiF 2 loadings were prepared and evaluated using an oxygen bomb calorimeter, thermal analysis, high-speed photography, and product characterization. The optimal NiF 2 content was determined to be 6 wt%, at which the composite fuel achieved a maximum reaction heat of 9357.62 J/g, corresponding to a 12.3% increase relative to the unmodified sample. Thermal analysis revealed that an appropriate amount of NiF 2 leads to the merging of the low- and high-temperature decomposition peaks of AP and the concentration of the exothermic event, indicative of a synergistic catalytic effect; excessive addition, in contrast, was found to suppress heat release. In propellant combustion, the SP-2 sample containing 2 wt% NiF 2 exhibited the most pronounced pressure-dependent burning-rate increase, with a maximum increase of 26.9% over the pressure range of 1.5–2.5 MPa. Product analysis further demonstrated that the condensed combustion products (CCPs) of SP-2 contain a higher proportion of Al 2 O 3 , exhibit a significantly reduced and multimodal particle size distribution with abundant submicron particles, and feature detectable AlN, confirming that NiF 2 effectively inhibits molten Al agglomeration and promotes combustion completeness. Therefore, the optimal working window of NiF 2 in the Al/AP system is identified, and its synergistic oxide-layer erosion and catalytic decomposition mechanism is elucidated, providing a key basis for the development of high-performance Al-based propellants.
