Depolymerization of lignin into cycloalkanes over a hydrotalcite-derived NiFe alloy catalyst

Hairui Jiao,Yushuai Sang,Hong Chen,Yongdan Li

Herein, an Ni9Fe1/NiAlOz catalyst is reported to be an efficient catalyst for conversion of enzymatic hydrolysis lignin (EHL) and 2-phenethyl phenyl ether (PPE), a lignin dimer model compound. Interspecies electron transfer within the alloy phase enhances the intrinsic hydrogenation activity of Ni, while Fe doping generates abundant interfacial oxygen vacancies (OVs). The combination of H* from high-intensity hydrogen spillover and abundant OVs promotes the depolymerization of EHL into cycloalkanes. Because of this combination, Ni9Fe1/NiAlOz achieves 99.4% of PPE conversion under mild reaction conditions (100 °C, 0.8 MPa H2, and 3 h) and achieves the yield of cycloalkanes (169.5 mg per g EHL at 300 °C) from EHL that exceeds the theoretical yield. The catalyst is also stable for 6 runs without much deactivation. This strategy provides new insights into the rational design of an efficient and stable transition metal catalyst using a simple preparation method for the valorization of EHL.

Improved Hydrodeoxygenation of Phenol to Cyclohexane on NiFe Alloy Catalysts Derived from Phyllosilicates

Qiao Han,Hui Wang,Mooeez Ur Rehman,Xin Shang,Haijun Chen,Na Ji,Xinli Tong,Hui Shi,Yujun Zhao

Graphical A phyllosilicate-derived NiFe/SiO 2 catalyst with both metallic Ni and NiFe alloy active sites prepared by ammonia-evaporation method shows excellent intrinsic activity in the hydrodeoxygenation of phenol to cyclohexane. A phyllosilicate-derived NiFe/SiO 2 catalyst (NiFe/SiO 2 −AE) was successfully prepared by the ammonia evaporation method and applied in the hydrodeoxygenation of phenol to cyclohexane. Another two catalysts were also prepared for a comparison by impregnation (NiFe/SiO 2 −IM) and deposition-precipitation (NiFe/SiO 2 −DP) methods, respectively. It was found that Ni−Fe alloy, the active sites for the hydrogenolysis of C−O bond, can be obtained by the reduction of NiFe 2 O 4 (IM) or phyllosilicate (DP and AE) by H 2 . The AE strategy can generate more phyllosilicate structure, which improves the dispersion of both Ni−Fe alloy and metallic Ni sites and allows the formation of more interface between these two kinds of sites as well. Therefore, the NiFe/SiO 2 −AE exhibits a significantly high catalytic performance in the HDO of phenol to cyclohexane. Moreover, the turnover frequency of Ni−Fe alloy sites over NiFe/SiO 2 −AE catalysts is much higher than those of other two catalysts. It is suggested that the enhanced synergy between the two kinds of active sites in the adsorption of C−O groups and hydrogen molecules ensures the superior intrinsic activity in HDO process.

Highly anti-corrosive NiFe LDHs–NiFe alloy hybrid enables long-term stable alkaline seawater electrolysis

Li Jia-Hong,Chen Hao,You Si-Hang,Yang Gan-Xin,Liu Peng,Gao Meng-Qi,Chen Shu-Guang,Zhang Fei-Fei

Owing to the significant potential of alkaline seawater electrolysis for converting surplus power into eco-friendly hydrogen fuel, we developed bifunctional electrodes that integrate low-crystalline NiFe LDHs and amorphous NiFe alloy on a Ni foam (NF) substrate to enhance this process. Driven by the battery-like characteristics of NiFe LDHs, an anti-corrosive and active outer layer of NiFe vac OOH continuously forms over time in the hybrid on the anode for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), effectively mitigating powder shedding caused by corrosion induced by multiple anions in seawater. Meanwhile, the strong bond between the hybrid and the NF substrate maintains intact hybrid coatings to ensure a relatively high overall conductivity of the electrodes, significantly reducing the negative effects of structural degradation during the OER and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), as well as the accumulation of contaminants on the electrode surfaces. In long-term tests, these bifunctional hybrid electrodes maintained stable performance, even at a high current density of 500 mA·cm −2 . The cell voltage increased by only 88 mV over 1000 h to 1.970 V during saline electrolysis and by 103 mV over 500 h to 2.062 V during seawater electrolysis. Hence, this study provides valuable insights into efficient and stable seawater electrolysis using NiFe LDHs–NiFe alloy hybrids. Graphical abstract

Boosting selectivity in glucose hydrogenation to sorbitol by optimizing Fe distribution in alloys and supports

Yixin Luo,Jingnan Yang,Fu Li,Xiaomei Zhou,Tongyan Yu,Qingxin Guan,Mo Qiu,Wei Li

The hydrogenation of glucose to sorbitol using Raney-Ni is a well-established process in industry, but it faces challenges such as high mannitol content, nickel leaching, and catalyst pyrophoricity. Here, Ni 6 Fe 1 /Al 2 O 3 nanoflower with high sorbitol selectivity and stability was synthesized from Ni x Fe y /Al-LDH precursors, where the distribution of iron in the alloy phase and support can be well-regulated. XANES and FT-EXAFS spectra verified the presence of Fe in the catalyst as NiFe alloy and FeO x . Multiple evidences unveiled that the NiFe alloy phase significantly improving the yield of sorbitol and the iron oxide species can regulate the acidity of the support, thus effectively reducing the byproduct mannitol. Delightfully, the optimal Ni 6 Fe 1 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst achieved a sorbitol yield of 99% and a mannitol yield of 0.45%, showing a significant advantage over Ni/Al 2 O 3 (77% and 1.3%) and Raney-Ni (57% and 1.3%) catalysts. Theoretical calculations indicate that the NiFe alloy surface is more conducive to glucose adsorption and sorbitol desorption, and the intrinsic high activity of NiFe alloy phase is due to the downshift of d-band center, which facilitates H* dissociation from the anti-bonding orbital. This study provides significant insights for designing catalysts with high activity and selectivity in converting lignocellulosic biomass.

Enhanced-electrocatalytic activity of Ni1−xFex alloy supported on polyethyleneimine functionalized MoS2 nanosheets for hydrazine oxidation

Jing Li,Weijie Tang,Haidong Yang,Zhengping Dong,Jingwei Huang,Shuwen Li,Jia Wang,Jun Jin,Jiantai Ma

A high-performance Ni1−xFex on polyethyleneimine (PEI)-functionalized molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) electrocatalyst has been synthesized by an electroplating in situ growth approach. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirm the successful functionalization of MoS2 with PEI. The empty orbitals of Ni2+ and Fe2+ (Ni and Fe precursors) coordinated with the donated lone pairs of nitrogen atoms in PEI-mediated MoS2 and then the Ni2+ and Fe2+ were in situ reduced at a negative potential. Transmission electron microscope images and X-ray diffraction reveal that Ni85Fe15 nanoparticles with an average size of 2.25 nm are uniformly dispersed on the PEI–MoS2 sheets. The Ni1−xFex/PEI–MoS2 catalyst exhibits unexpectedly high activity towards the hydrazine oxidation reaction, which can be attributed to highly homogeneous dispersed Ni1−xFex alloy. It also shows enhanced electrochemical stability due to the structural integrity of PEI–MoS2. Finally, the Ni85Fe15/PEI–MoS2 catalyst is proved to be very valuable for applications in hydrazine fuel cells, as compared with Ni90Fe10/PANi–MoS2 and Ni85Fe15/MoS2 catalysts.

Fabrication of a NiFe Alloy Oxide Catalyst via Surface Reconstruction for Selective Hydrodeoxygenation of Fatty Acid to Fatty Alcohol

Depeng Han,Wang Yin,Shengping Wang,Shuqian Xia

Traditional NiFe alloy catalyst (NiFe AC) possesses low alcohol selectivity for the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of fatty acid due to its excessive deoxygenation into alkane. Herein, we innovatively provide the NiFe alloy oxide catalyst (NiFe AOC) to suppress the adsorption of aldehyde, which is the crucial intermediate of objective product alcohol converting into a side product, via the steric hindrance of lattice oxygen to inhibit the further conversion of alcohol. NiFe AOC reaches 100% conversion of lauric acid with 90% selectivity to lauryl alcohol. Kinetic analysis indicated that the apparent activation energy of side reaction increases by 71.1 kJ/mol for NiFe AOC relative to NiFe AC, evidencing the inhibition for the conversion of objective product alcohol into alkane for NiFe AOC. Furthermore, DFT calculation also suggests that the activation energy of the side reaction increases by 0.33 eV on NiFe AOC compared to NiFe AC. In addition, used NiFe AOC can be totally regenerated via surface reconstruction during the reduction–reoxidation treatment. However, overoxidation inducing NiFe surface phase separation weakened the synergistic interaction of Ni–Fe bimetallic sites and further decreased the catalytic activity.

Reduced graphene oxide supported nitrogen-doped porous carbon-coated NiFe alloy composite with excellent electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction

Xiaoyang Yue,Chunsen Song,Zhenyu Yan,Xiaoping Shen,Wentao Ke,Zhenyuan Ji,Guoxing Zhu,Aihua Yuan,Jun Zhu,Baolong Li

Designing of cost-effective electrocatalysts for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is highly desired for the practical production of clean hydrogen energy. Herein, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) supported N-doped porous carbon-coated NiFe alloy composite (NiFe@NC/RGO) was synthesized via a facile pyrolysis route. The introduction of RGO effectively protects the active NiFe component from agglomeration and largely promotes charge transfer. Meanwhile, the formation of porous N-doped carbon shell provides sufficient contact between active species and electrolyte, thus exposing plenty of accessible active sites. Specifically, the optimized NiFe@NC/RGO composite shows superior electrocatalytic performance, delivering an overpotential as low as 223 mV at current density of 10 mA cm − 2 , and a small Tafel slope of 48.7 mV dec − 1 in 1 M KOH solution, which outperforms commercial precious metal oxide catalysts such as RuO 2 and a vast majority of electrocatalysts reported so far. Long-term cycling test demonstrates that the overpotential at current density of 10 mA cm − 2 has almost no change after 1000 cycles at a scan rate of 50 mV s − 1 , indicating its quite good stability. The low-cost and high-performance electrocatalyst developed in this work shows great potential for practical hydrogen production from electrolysis of water.

Partially oxidized NiFe alloy: An effective promoter to enhance Pd electrocatalytic performance for ethylene glycol oxidation

Yan Yang,Wei Wang,Fengxia Wang,Yanqin Liu,Dan Chai,Ziqiang Lei

In this study, a novel Pd-(NiFe) x -(NiFeO) y /C catalyst is fabricated by supporting Pd on partially oxidized nickel–iron alloy. Because of the promotion effect between nickel–iron alloy and nickel–iron oxide towards Pd, the catalyst exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for ethylene glycol oxidation . Specifically, it has much larger electrochemically active surface area, better electrocatalytic activity and durability compared to Pd/C counterpart. After all, this strategy is well suited to synthesize other metal alloys and oxides synergistically promoting Pd electrocatalysts for direct ethylene glycol fuel cells.

Three-dimensional self-supporting catalyst with NiFe alloy/oxyhydroxide supported on high-surface cobalt hydroxide nanosheet array for overall water splitting

Chen Cheng,Fengyu Liu,Dazhong Zhong,Genyan Hao,Guang Liu,Jinping Li,Qiang Zhao

The development of available dual-function electrocatalysts is of great significance to the effective storage of excess electricity. Here, we obtained a three-dimensional Co(OH) 2 nanosheet with high surface area on nickel foam (Co(OH) 2 /NF) via conventional hydrothermal. NiFe-coated Co(OH) 2 nanosheet array (NiFe@Co(OH) 2 NSAs/NF) was further constructed by electrodeposition for water splitting. By optimizing and regulating the deposition time, NiFe@Co(OH) 2 NSAs/NF with a deposition time of 500 s (NiFe-500@Co(OH) 2 NSAs/NF) only needs 98 mV of overpotential and can be stabilized for 100 h for hydrogen evolution at 10 mA cm −2 due to the rich density active components for NiFe alloy/oxyhydroxide layer and interaction with Co(OH) 2 nanosheets. Thanks to the excellent 3D nanosheet array structure and the close integration between Co(OH) 2 and the upper layer NiFe, NiFe@Co(OH) 2 NSAs/NF with a deposition time of 200 s (NiFe-200@Co(OH) 2 NSAs/NF) can provide 10 mA cm −2 with only 204 mV and maintain constant catalysis within 100 h. Therefore, the constructed NiFe@Co(OH) 2 NSAs/NF (500||200) double-electrode cell for water splitting requires only 1.58 V drive potential and can maintain 24 h durability at 10 mA cm −2 . The design of the catalyst opens up new ideas for the large-scale application of transition metals in water splitting.

Enhancing alkaline water oxidation with NiFe alloy-encapsulated nitrogen-doped vertical graphene array

Nan Jue,Ye Beirong,He Xun,Li Chen,Zhang Wanli,Liu Qian,Li Luming,Chu Wei,Sun Xuping,Zhang Yongqi

Advancing efficient and affordable electrocatalysts to boost the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is pivotal for sustainable green hydrogen production. Herein, we propose the fabrication of nickel-iron alloy nanoparticles-encapsulated on N-doped vertically aligned graphene array on carbon cloth (NiFe@NVG/CC) as a highly active three-dimensional (3D) catalyst electrode for OER. In 1 M KOH, such NiFe@NVG/CC demonstrates outstanding catalytic performance, necessitating merely overpotential of 245 mV for achieving a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 , a remarkably low Tafel slope of 36.2 mV·dec −1 . Furthermore, density functional theory calculations validate that the incorporate of N species into graphene can reinforce the electrocatalytic activity though reducing the reaction energy barrier during the conversion of ⋆ O to ⋆ OOH intermediates. The outstanding performance and structural benefits of NiFe@NVG/CC offer valuable insights for the development of innovative and efficient electrocatalysts for water oxidation.

P-NiFe2O4/N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes/NiFe Multi-Phase Heterojunctions for Overall Water Splitting and Urea Electrolysis

Lina Jia,Gaohui Du,Di Han,Yunting Wang,Youqing Wang,Huayu Li,Wenqi Zhao,Shixian Chen,Miao Zhang,Qingmei Su,Bingshe Xu

Graphical P-doped NiFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles/N-doped carbon nanotubes are prepared via a hydrothermal method followed by phosphorization. The CNTs greatly enhance the electron transfer rate and the P-doping effectively modulates the charge distribution around Ni and Fe atoms, optimizes the energy barriers of adsorption of intermediates, urea and water dissociation, thereby accelerating the kinetics of water splitting and urea electrolysis. The design and construction of highly efficient electrocatalysts for overall water splitting and urea electrolysis are significantly important for promoting energy conversion and realizing green hydrogen production. In this work, we constructed a multi-phase heterojunction through a simple hydrothermal and phosphorization process. The P-doped NiFe 2 O 4 (P-NiFe 2 O 4 ) nanoparticles were uniformly anchored on the bamboo-like N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) grown via a NiFe-alloy autocatalysis. The electronic structure and coordination environment of active species were optimized by the synergistic action of P doping, well-dispersed ultrafine NiFe 2 O 4 , and NCNTs matrix with good conductivity, enhancing their quantity and activity for electrocatalysis. Consequently, the P-NiFe 2 O 4 /NCNTs/NiFe exhibits excellent HER and OER activities with an overpotential of 111 and 266 mV at 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, respectively. The symmetrical overall water-splitting cell using P-NiFe 2 O 4 /NCNTs/NiFe as both anode and cathode delivers 10 mA cm −2 at a voltage of 1.604 V in 1 M KOH. Notably, the two-electrode cell requires a low voltage of 1.467 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm − 2 in 1 M KOH solution with 0.6 M urea. This designed catalysts display outstanding reaction kinetics and catalytic stability. This work provides useful guidance for applying transition metal-based catalysts for hydrogen production.

Interstitial atom-doped NiFe alloy as pre-catalysts boost direct seawater oxygen evolution

Lumin Song,Dan Zhang,Hongfu Miao,Yue Shi,Mengna Wang,Liang Zhao,Tianrong Zhan,Jianping Lai,Lei Wang

NiFe-based materials are excellent OER electrocatalysts. However, it is difficult to stabilize anions and cations during reconstruction, which also leads to the problem of high valence metals at low levels and poor stability in direct seawater. Herein, we propose the strategy of using interstitial P atom-doped NiFe alloys (P 4.8 -NiFe ANs-400) as pre-catalysts to stabilize anions and cations, thereby promoting the formation of abundant high-valent metal species and excellent activity and stability in direct seawater. The reconstructed P 4.8 -NiFe ANs-400 catalyst generates a large amount of high-valence transition metal Ni 4+ , which contributed to its low overpotential (214 mV) and long-term stability (100 h) in a seawater electrolyte at 100 mA cm −2 . Experiments and theoretical calculations show that the interstitially doped P atoms share the charge around the Fe and the active Ni sites, optimizing the free energy of the OER intermediate and making the chlorine evolution reaction (CER) difficult to proceed.
