Water electrolysis is a compelling method for the production of environmentally friendly hydrogen, minimizing carbon emissions. The electrolysis of water heavily relies on an effective and steady oxygen evolution reaction (OER) taking place at the anode. Herein, we introduce a highly promising catalyst for OER called CoSe2@NiFeOOH arrays, which are supported on nickel foam. This catalyst, referred to as CoSe2@NiFeOOH/NF, is fabricated through a two-step process involving the selenidation of a Co-based porous metal organic framework and subsequent electrochemical deposition on nickel foam. The CoSe2@NiFeOOH/NF catalyst demonstrates outstanding activity for the OER in an alkaline electrolyte. It exhibits a low overpotential (η) of 254 mV at 100 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 73 mV dec−1, and excellent high stability. The good performance of CoSe2@NiFeOOH/NF can be attributed to the combination of the high conductivity of the inner layer and the synergistic effect between CoSe2and NiFeOOH. This study offers an effective method for the fabrication of highly efficient catalysts for an OER.Keywords:oxygen evolution reaction;NiFeOOH;water electrolysis;selenidation;CoSe2

High entropy perovskite oxide (HEPO) has proved to be one of the most promising candidates in the exploration of non-precious oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts. Herein, we report a chemical bath deposition method for decorating NiFeOOH on lanthanide-based high entropy perovskite oxide (La-HEO) to form a rational core–shell heterostructure through direct atomic-scale contact to further enhance the OER activity of HEPO. Compared with La-HEO and NiFeOOH, the resulting La-HEO@NiFeOOH showed excellent OER performance, requiring an overpotential of 262 mV (10 mA cm −2 ) and a Tafel slope of 38 mV dec −1 , which owes much to the accelerated charge transfer and the optimized adsorption energy of reaction intermediates caused by synergistic effects. Meanwhile, the water splitting electrolyzer demanded a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at 1.574 V for La-HEO@NiFeOOH(1:3)||Pt/C, which is lower than that of La-HEO||Pt/C. This study illustrates the effectiveness of interface engineering to boost the OER performance of HEPO, and reveals the potential of La-HEO@NiFeOOH as a promising OER electrocatalyst.

The development of structural stable, high-performance, inexpensive electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is essential to alleviate the energy crisis. Herein, cactus-like CoNiSe 2 was synthesized on nickel foam and NiFeOOH was electrodeposited on surface of CoNiSe 2 to form a core-shell structural electrode. The obtained NiFeOOH/CoNiSe 2 /NF exhibited ultra-low overpotentials of 204 mV and 234 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , with a Tafel slope of 26.2 mV dec −1 in 1 M KOH alkaline solution. Furthermore, the current density only decreased by 5% after a 100 h durability test at 200 mA cm −2 , showing excellent robust stability. A two-electrode system with NiFeOOH/CoNiSe 2 /NF as anode and Ni/NiO@MoO 3-x /NF as cathode (NiFeOOH/CoNiSe 2 /NF||Ni/NiO@MoO 3-x /NF) showed a low voltage of 1.47/1.56 V to deliver 10/100 mA cm −2 . According to the experimental and density functional theory (DFT) results, the strong electronic interactions at the NiFeOOH/CoNiSe 2 /NF interface leads to an increase in the valence state of Fe and an optimisation of the adsorption free energy , which are favourable to reduce the energy consumption of the OER. This work obtained high performance OER electrocatalysts by engineering amorphous and crystalline heterointerfaces and structural design, which will provide some inspiration for similar work.

Developing cost-effective oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts for industrial current densities remains challenging, hindered by adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) scaling limitations and reconstruction instability. Here, we report a heterointerface-engineered Ni 3 S 2 /NiFeOOH catalyst formed via in-situ electrochemical reconstruction of Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH. Interfacial charge redistribution stabilizes high-valent Ni 3+ /Fe 3+ species and generates coordinatively unsaturated lattice oxygen sites, thereby activating the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM). Combined operando spectroscopy, pH-dependent kinetics, and isotope labeling confirm LOM dominance. Further theoretical analyses reveal that the heterointerface downshifts the metal d -band center and upshifts the O 2p -band center, optimized intermediate adsorption free energy. Benefiting from the compatible multi-mechanism, the reconstructed catalyst demonstrates outstanding OER performance, only requires overpotentials of 196/305 mV to drive current densities of 10/1000 mA cm −2 in alkaline media, with robust stability for over 500 h. This work clarifies how interfacial electronic modulation connects pre-catalyst reconstruction to LOM activation, providing a scalable design strategy for high-current-density OER electrocatalysts. Graphical Upon electrochemical activation, Ni 3 S 2 /NiFe-LDH catalysts undergo transformation to Ni 3 S 2 /NiFeOOH. This structural reconstruction not only exposes additional catalytic active sites but also activates lattice oxygen species, thereby triggering the lattice oxygen reaction pathway. By circumventing the thermodynamic constraints inherent to the adsorbate mechanism, the reconstructed catalyst achieves a reduced overpotential, ultimately enhancing its oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic performance.

Oxygen evolution reactions (OER) are often the decisive step in determining the water electrolysis rate. The first row of transition metals and their derivatives, represented by Ni and Fe, have attracted much attention due to their excellent OER performance. Here, we develop a one-step strategy for preparing oxygen-evolving electrodes, in which the NiFeOOH-modified NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheet is supported by nickel foam. At 100 mA·cm−2, the overpotential of NiFeOOH-NiFe-LDH was just 227 mV, and the duration times were over 200 h in 1 mol·L−1KOH. Furthermore, the co-existence of LDH and hydroxyl oxides helps the oxygen evolution reaction. These results suggest the potential for this synthesis strategy to provide a low-cost, highly active OER electrocatalyst for industrial water splitting.

NiFe(oxy)hydroxide (NiFeOOH) has been widely studied as a catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), but its activity is still not satisfactory. Although metal doping has been employed as a promising strategy for addressing this issue, the instability and leaching of the high-valence dopant metals remain considerable challenges. Herein, an array of Cr-doped NiFeOOH nanosheets was in situ synthesized on nickel foam via a one-step hydrothermal method. The doping of NiFeOOH with Cr was found to induce partial electron transfer from Ni and Fe to Cr atoms, thereby modulating the electronic structure of the catalyst and enhancing its intrinsic activity. Electrochemical and in situ Raman spectroscopy analyses showed that Fe active sites with lower charge density enhance the adsorption of *OH and reduce the formation energy barrier of the *OOH intermediate during OER, thereby accelerating the OER. Moreover, Fe was found to promote the transfer of additional electrons to Cr, leading to electron accumulation at Cr sites. This electron accumulation effectively prevents Cr from excessive oxidation and leaching under anode potentials, thereby maintaining the structural stability of the catalyst. The optimized Cr-doped NiFeOOH self-supported electrode exhibited a current density of 50 mA/cm 2 with an overpotential of only 239 mV and remained stable for 100 h at 600 mA/cm 2 in 1 mol/L KOH.

The cobalt−carbonate (CoCi)/NiFeOOH double-layer co-catalyst was prepared on bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ). Compared with the same type of electrode (Co−Pi/NiFeOOH/BiVO 4 and Co−Sil/NiFeOOH/BiVO 4 ), the photoelectrochemical (PEC) performance of the composite electrode presents the most excellent performance. The Co−Ci/NiFeOOH/BiVO 4 electrode prepared by photoelectric deposition (PED) achieves a photocurrent density of 4.1 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V vs RHE, and the applied bias photon-current efficiency (ABPE) is up to 0.95%. In addition, with the help of the equivalent circuit fitting in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), the charge transfer resistance ( R ct ) of Co−Ci/NiFeOOH/BiVO 4 is only 108.9 Ω, which is 16% that of BiVO 4 . The enhanced PEC performance of Co−Ci/NiFeOOH/BiVO 4 in the double-layer cocatalyst system is attributed to the outstanding advantages of Co−Ci cocatalyst in oxygen vacancy defects, superior to other cobalt-based catalysts in promoting charge transfer and improving the kinetics of water oxidation. This makes Co−Ci co-catalyst become one of the favorable competitors in the field of photoelectric catalysis.

Solar-driven photoelectrochemical hydrogen production is a promising way to achieve carbon neutrality, but severe charge recombination in photoanodes limits the conversion efficiency. Herein, the conjugated polycarbazole framework (CPF-TCB) as the hole transport layer and NiFeOOH as the oxygen evolution cocatalyst are combined to simultaneously enhance the efficiency of charge separation and surface catalytic kinetics in BiVO4 photoanodes. CPF-TCB provides an appropriate energy level for rapid hole extraction while suppressing recombination, whereas NiFeOOH markedly increases the density of intermediate surface states (i-SS) to accelerate the oxygen evolution reaction. Consequently, the constructed BiVO4/CPF-TCB/NiFeOOH photoanode achieves a photocurrent density of 4.25 mA cm–2 at 1.23 VRHE and exhibits photostability for 20 h. This work provides a paradigm for exploiting the synergistic effects of organic hole transport layers and oxygen evolution cocatalysts toward efficient and durable solar-driven hydrogen production.

Glucose electrocatalytic-conversion reaction (GCR) is a promising anode reaction to replace the slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER), thus promoting the development of hydrogen production by electrochemical water splitting. Herein, NiFe-based metal-organic framework (MOF) is used as a precursor to prepare W-doped nickel-iron phosphide (W-NiFeP) nanosheet arrays by ion exchange and phosphorylation, which exhibit a high electrocatalytic activity toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), featuring an overpotential of only −179 mV to achieve the current density of 100 mA cm −2 in alkaline media. Notably, electrochemical activation of W-NiFeP facilitates the in situ formation of phosphate groups producing W,P-NiFeOOH, which, in conjunction with the W co-doped amorphous layers, leads to a high electrocatalytic performance toward GCR, due to enhanced proton transfer and adsorption of reaction intermediates, as confirmed in experimental and theoretical studies. Thus, the two-electrode electrolyzer of the W-NiFeP/NF||W,P-NiFeOOH/NF for HER||GCR needs only a low cell voltage of 1.56 V to deliver 100 mA cm −2 at a remarkable hydrogen production efficiency of 1.86 mmol h −1 , with a high glucose conversion (98.0%) and formic acid yields (85.2%). Results from this work highlight the significance of the development of effective electrocatalysts for biomass electrocatalytic-conversion in the construction of high-efficiency electrolyzers for green hydrogen production.

The industrial application of NiFe-based electrocatalysts faces a critical challenge from Fe 3+ dissolution during alkaline water electrolysis. A breakthrough Fe/FeNi 3 @NiFeOOH heterostructure is reported that achieves remarkable industrial-grade performance, demonstrating both an ultralow overpotential (200 mV@100 mA cm −2 ) and unprecedented stability (>1800 h@70 °C, 1.7 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE). The exceptional stability stems from two synergistic effects: 1) a stepping interface electric field that stabilizes low-valence Fe species through electrostatic confinement, and 2) dynamic interfacial equilibrium maintained via uphill diffusion of trace Fe ions from electrolyte (ppm-level). This work provides a fundamental design strategy of highly stable electrocatalysts, paving the way for practical industrial-scale water electrolysis.
