Heterostructured Ni3N–NiMoN Nanowires as Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution and 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Oxidation

Junrong Zeng,Wenhao Chen,Gaowei Zhang,Liang Yu,Liubiao Zhong,Ya Liu,Sanfei Zhao,Yejun Qiu

Affected by the slow kinetic oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the cell voltage of water splitting is usually beyond 1.5 V, causing high energy consumption to produce hydrogen. Herein, heterostructural Ni3N–NiMoN nanowires supported on carbon cloth (Ni3N–NiMoN/CC) are successfully fabricated, and they can act as bifunctional electrocatalysts, exhibiting a low overpotential of 74 mV at 100 mA cm–2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and a low potential of 1.39 V at 50 mA cm–2 for 5-hydroxymethylfurfural oxidation reaction (HMFOR), respectively. The HMFOR//HER device constructed by Ni3N–NiMoN/CC achieves a very low cell voltage of ∼1.29 V at 10 mA cm–2, which is 0.32 V lower than that of the OER//HER device. Specially, a value-added product of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid is obtained. Additionally, density functional theory calculations are carried out. This work provides a promising strategy to further reduce the cell voltage to generate hydrogen by replacing OER with biomass oxidation.

Integration of heterointerface and porosity engineering to achieve efficient hydrogen evolution of 2D porous NiMoN nanobelts coupled with Ni particles

Zhihui Li,Aiping Wu,Ying Xie,Ying Gu,Haijing Yan,Dongxu Wang,Siyu Wang,Chengxu Jin,Lei Wang,Chungui Tian

The design of the electrocatalysts with the plentiful heterojuctional interface and large-accessible surface is desired to boost the HER performance, but it remains a challenge. Herein, we showed the design of 2D Ni/Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N porous heterojunction nanobelts as effective catalyst for the HER. The intimate combination of Ni and Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N can make the formation of the heterojuctional interface with plentiful active sites. The 2D porous structure can provide large accessible surface with less resistance for the transmission of the electrolytes, thus promoting the mass/charge transfer. The ratio of Ni and Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N can be easily tuned by regulating the precursor composition, which is important to give catalysts with optimized interface and suitable pores. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the interaction between Ni and Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N at the heterointerface can largely improve the intermediate H* adsorption kinetics (ΔG H*  = -0.07 eV). Due to the above advantages, the optimized catalysts exhibited excellent HER activity with a low overpotential of 48 mV in 1 M KOH at 10 mA cm −2 (without iR correction), which is superior to the most reported non-noble metal-based catalysts, and the long-term durability with no obvious degradation after continual operation of 48 h Notably, an electrolyzer assembled by the optimized Ni/Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N cathode with NiFe-LDH anode only requires a low operating voltage of 1.47 V to deliver 10 mA cm −2 in 1 M KOH, surpassing the corresponding Pt/NF||RuO 2 /NF electrolyzer (1.61 V) and most of reported electrolyzers.

Nitrogen doped carbon encapsulated hierarchical NiMoN as highly active and durable HER electrode for repeated ON/OFF water electrolysis

Rufei Zhang,Lidong Xu,Zhaohui Wu,Linan Wang,Jinpeng Zhang,Yang Tang,Likun Xu,Ao Xie,Yongmei Chen,Hailong Zhang,Pingyu Wan

Water electrolysis powered by tidal, wind and solar energies is an ideal green hydrogen production path. However, intermittent power supply and unpredictable power cut by renewable energy resources inevitably compel the electrode materials to suffer from the fluctuant working conditions or repeated start/stop operation, which always leads the deterioration of electrocatalyst. Herein, a novel hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrode with hierarchical NiMoN microrod arrays encapsulated by nitrogen doped ultra-thin carbon layer and in-situ grown on nickel foam (labelled NF) was reported. The prepared NiMoN@NC/NF electrode exhibits extremely low overpotentials less than 10 mV at 10 mA cm −2 for HER in both KOH and H 2 SO 4 electrolytes. Importantly, it exhibits not only high stability during the 100 h repeated ON/OFF test, but also high oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance in acid electrolyte. The water electrolysis cell, using 100 cm 2 NiMoN@NC/NF cathode and NiFe based anode, supplies a high current density of 100 mA cm −2 with a low cell voltage of 1.53 V at 88 °C. The appropriate nitrogen doping, carbon encapsulation, and the well-designed hierarchical structure of the NiMoN@NC/NF endow its optimized Gibbs free energy of H*, excellent activity and outstanding adaptability to harsh conditions, demonstrating its great prospect in the repeated ON/OFF electrolysis associated with changeful renewable electricity.

High-efficient electrocatalytic overall water splitting over vanadium doped hexagonal Ni0.2Mo0.8N

Peng Zhou,Xingshuai Lv,Danning Xing,Fahao Ma,Yuanyuan Liu,Zeyan Wang,Peng Wang,Zhaoke Zheng,Ying Dai,Baibiao Huang

Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N is regarded as an ideal water splitting electrode due to its high electronic conductivity, bimetallic characteristic and earth abundance property. However, it is very likely to further improve the electrochemical performance since the adsorption behavior of the Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N on catalytic intermediates has not reached a satisfactory level. Herein, we designed and developed a novel V doped hexagonal Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N electrode (denoted as V-Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N) which exhibits superior water splitting performances (39 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and 245 mV at 25 mA cm −2 for HER and OER respectively). Combined with the density function theory calculations, the improvement of the water splitting performance is attributed to the optimized water adsorption energy, water dissociation energy barrier, active hydrogen adsorption free energy , oxygen-containing intermediates adsorption free energies and increased electronic states density near the Fermi level. Finally, the assembled water splitting system exhibits low overpotential (1.52 V at 10 mA cm −2 ) and excellent durability.

Co2P-NiMoN/NF Heterostructure Nanorod Arrays as Efficient Bifunctional Electrocatalysts for Urea Electrolysis

Zixuan Zhang,Dongxing Tan,Jing Wang,Dan Zhang,Qingkun Kong,Weiqing Kong,Xianfang Yin,Yuan-Yuan Feng

Electrolysis of water represents an effective method for the generation of high-purity hydrogen. Nevertheless, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) exhibits slow kinetics, which leads to a high electrolytic potential and induces excessive energy consumption. In this work, nickel foam-supported 3D phosphide/bimetal nitride (Co2P-NiMoN/NF) nanorod array catalyst is prepared by calcination of NiMoO4, followed by phosphatization of Co(OH)2. The heterostructure catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity for cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER: η100 = 98 mV, η1000 = 297 mV) and anodic OER (η100 = 277 mV, η1000 = 382 mV) of water electrolysis in alkaline electrolyte, indicating its feasibility as a bifunctional catalyst for overall water splitting (OWS). Additionally, at a current density of 100 mA cm–2, the associated oxidation potential is decreased by roughly 160 mV when the anodic OER is replaced with the urea oxidation process (UOR), which has a far lower thermodynamic equilibrium potential. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the heterointerface between Co2P and NiMoN enriches the density of electronic states near the Fermi level, thereby enhancing electron transfer and promoting charge redistribution. This modulation precisely tunes the adsorption strengths of reactants during the reaction process, ultimately boosting the electrocatalytic performance. A current density of 100 mA cm–2 can be attained at a cell voltage of 1.51 V when Co2P-NiMoN/NF is used as the anode and cathode in the urea electrolysis cell. Notably, this cell potential is significantly lower compared to that of the water electrolysis cell (1.65 V), as well as the previously published values. The findings demonstrate that the Co2P-NiMoN/NF heterostructure can be used as a bifunctional catalyst for water and urea electrolysis and demonstrate an efficient strategy for the energy-efficient production of hydrogen through substituting UOR for OER at the anode of water electrolysis.

Carbon-coated W-doped NiMoN catalysts with enhanced antioxidant properties for robust water electrolysis under fluctuating electricity

Rufei Zhang,Hui Teng,Jinyuan Miao,Jianing Kang,Lili Zhou,Linting Cheng,Zhiqun Bai,Jianwen Zhang,Jia Liu,Yang Tang,Pingyu Wan

For renewable energy-driven water electrolysis, developing low cost, highly active and durable electrocatalysts is essential. Here, we prepared a W-doped NiMoN microcolumn coated with a nitrogen doped carbon layer (W-NiMoN@NC) as an excellent non-precious electrocatalyst. This material displays excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with low overpotentials of 13 and 67 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm−2, outperforming commercial Pt/C. DFT calculations show that W doping optimizes the water dissociation and H* adsorption processes, improving HER activity. Additionally, W doping coupled with an ultrathin NC coating enhances the intrinsic anti-oxidation ability of NiMoN. After 100 cycles of harsh fluctuating electrolysis, the incremental overpotential of W-NiMoN@NC is only 8 mV at 1000 mA cm−2, significantly less than that of undoped NiMoN@NC (56 mV). The excellent anti-oxidation ability of W-NiMoN@NC resulting from its high reserves of Ni0 was proved by XPS analysis after fluctuating electrolysis. This inside-out strategy endows W-NiMoN@NC with an exceptional feature of long-term durability under harsh fluctuating conditions and a promising potential for application in renewable energy-powered electrolysis.

Construction of Fe regulated NiMoN nanorods as an efficient electrocatalyst for overall water splitting and urea electrolysis

Longlong Liu,Lanli Chen,Huaming Zhang,Muhammad Humayun,Yuxiao Liu,Junhong Duan,Yanjun Fu,Mohamed Bououdina,Xinying Xue,Chundong Wang

Rational design of low-cost, highly-efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER) is critical to enable sustainable hydrogen production via water electrolysis. Herein, a novel nanorod arrays catalyst, Fe-NiMoN, has been rationally designed and directly grown on nickel foam (NF) via a facile hydrothermal method followed by a nitridation treatment. The novel 3D porous nanorod architecture is favorable for providing abundant active sites, accelerating mass diffusion/electron transfer, and facilitating gas release. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) simulations reveal that Fe doping shifts the d-band center of NiMoN away from the Fermi level compared to the undoped NiMoN, thereby reducing the hydrogen adsorption free energy (ΔGH*) toward 0, and which in turn enhances the HER activity. Consequently, the Fe-NiMoN catalyst delivers exceptional bifunctional electrocatalytic activity in alkaline media, requiring low overpotentials of 17 mV (HER) and 238 mV (OER) to achieve 10 mA cm–2. Notably, the Fe-NiMoN catalyst assembled into a two-electrode alkaline electrolyzer, requires only a voltage of 1.504 to achieve a current density value of 10 mA cm−2, with no performance declining after 100 h of steady operation. Moreover, for urea-assisted electrolysis, it can deliver 10 mA cm−2 at only 1.367 V. Overall, this work provides a strategy for synthesizing desirable electrocatalysts for green hydrogen production coupled with wastewater treatment.

Nitrogen doped carbon layer-encapsulated Ni and NiMoN nanoparticles on carbon black substrate for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Huai Su,Rufei Zhang,Weihao Sha,Mengbai Ma,Kai Yan,Jianing Kang,Qingwu Wang,Lili Zhou,Ao Xie,Zhiqun Bai,Yang Tang,Pingyu Wan

Highly efficient and low-cost catalysts for water electrolysis are crucial for the advancement of clean energy. In this study, an innovative hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst is synthesized, which consists of Ni and NiMoN nanoparticles coated by nitrogen-doped carbon layers and grown on a black pearl carbon substrate (denoted as NC@NiMoN NPs/BPC). The double carbon design-comprising a surface carbon coating layer and a bottom carbon substrate-modulates the electronic structure of NiMoN and facilitates the uniform dispersion of NiMoN NPs on BPC, endowing this hierarchical electrocatalyst with high activity and long durability. The electrochemical specific surface area of NC@NiMoN NPs/BPC is 42 times larger than that of NC@NiMoN without the BPC substrate. Moreover, this catalyst exhibits superior HER performance with low overpotentials of 11.3 and 74.6 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, outperforming the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Additionally, a typical alkaline water electrolyzer equipped with the NC@NiMoN NPs/BPC cathode shows negligible voltage decay after 250 h of continuous electrolysis, indicating excellent stability. This work provides not only an efficient hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst but also an innovative double-carbon strategy for the construction of efficient electrocatalysts for HER in water electrolysis.

Integrating the active OER and HER components as the heterostructures for the efficient overall water splitting

Aiping Wu,Ying Xie,Hui Ma,Chungui Tian,Ying Gu,Haijing Yan,Xiaomeng Zhang,Guoyu Yang,Honggang Fu

Developing the efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for overall water splitting is of the great importance for the production of H 2 . The popular bi-functional catalysts usually shown good activity for one half reaction at expense of the activity for another half-reaction, thus given a moderate performance for overall water splitting. In this paper, we have reported on integrating the active OER (Ni 3 N) and HER (NiMoN) components as Ni 3 N-NiMoN heterostructures for the effective overall water splitting. The heterostructures were constructed by the controllable nitridation of the Ni-Mo-O precursor anchored on carbon cloth (CC) under NH 3 atmosphere. The micro-structures of the catalyst could be tuned by regulating the surface properties of CC and the calcination temperature. Under optimized condition, the Ni 3 N-NiMoN catalysts exhibited good catalytic activity for both OER and HER in alkaline electrolyte . The catalysts can achieve a current density of 10   mA   cm −2 at an overpotential of 31   mV for HER, being close to Pt catalyst. Also, it only requiring an overpotential of 277   mV to reach current density of 10   mA   cm −2 for OER. Moreover, the cell assembled by the identical Ni 3 N-NiMoN as both the cathode and anode needs only a cell voltage of 1.54   V to achieve current density of 10   mA   cm −2 . The superior performance of Ni 3 N-NiMoN heterostructures can be ascribed to the following points: 1) the simultaneous presence of active OER and HER components and the promoted action each other in the heterostructures, and 2) the exposure of the abundant active sites in the sheet-like structure assembled by the nanoparticles .

Eco-friendly and large-scale fabrication of NiMoN/Ni(OH)2/NF as highly efficient and stable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction electrode

Mengyao Xue,Yuankang Bao,Xun Xu,Luliang Liao,Ping Li,Hao Zhang,Deliang Li,Binbin Wei,Shuwang Duo

Bimetallic nickel-molybdenum nitride (NiMoN) catalysts have attracted great attention due to their remarkable similarity to group VIII noble metals in terms of electronic structure, good electron conductivity, and durability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the existing approaches for fabricating NiMoN catalysts usually entail a series of multiple steps and hazardous ammoniated ingredient. As a result, these methods are difficult to be scaled up for large-area fabrication towards industrial water splitting. Herein, a hierarchical composite NiMoN@Ni(OH) 2 @NF composite electrode with a sheet morphology was synthesized based on a rational combination of seawater etching and magnetron sputtering. This method is easily scalable for producing large-area electrodes with minimal pollution. The incorporation of Ni(OH) 2 @NF nanoarray carriers enhances the exposure of additional active sites on the NiMoN layer, thereby augmenting the electrochemically active specific surface area of the electrode. The as-synthesized NiMoN@Ni(OH) 2 @NF electrode demonstrates excellent HER activity, with an overpotential of 57 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , and exhibits remarkable long-term catalytic stability for over 100 h at a current density of 100 mA cm −2 .This study presents an eco-friendly and straightforward method for preparing large-scale transition metal nitride catalysts with high catalytic activity.
